In today’s book review and summary we take a closer look at Ernest Beckers classic The Denial of Death. This is a psychology book that will blow your mind. I hope you enjoy some of the key lessons and takeaways that I share The Denial of Death in this short book review.
In The Denial of Death, Ernest Becker talks about the vital lie. This is the lie that we tell ourselves in order to cope with the terrible fact that we are just worms in the dirt-mortal and insignificant.
The Denial of Death also touches on the paradoxical nature of human beings. One the one hand we are all so limited and animal-like, yet our minds are limitless and godlike it the way it can conjure up the most fantastic ideas with our imagination.
Are we gods with anuses?!

I've read this book over a dozen time in the past 8 years, and have learned something new each time. Becker's books; the Birth and Death of Meaning, and Escape from Evil, are also extremely insightful.

just finished reading this book and i must say it left me with this gnawing need to really examine my life and the foundations of my current character but i don't think i've yet built up the courage to fully engage myself in this exercise cos i might not like the outcome

Your comment reminds me of an Instagram post I did about this book back in the day where I started the caption with: “Disclaimer: This book might trigger an existential crisis.” . It seems like there was more truth to that statement than I first imagined. 😬

The Denial of Death is an amazing existencial phenomenological book that takes the premises of heroism and death and all the corolaries of the heroic to show perfectly how the divine paradox ties us to an anxiety that's always pushing us towards the good desire and what's almost "fated" that we should meet and not turn our back on. I love this book beyond measure.

The last 2 paragraphs of chapter 3 were so enlightening to me. For so long I've struggled to become "socialized", especially post-pandemic and I think I finally get it. If someone told me before I read this book that I needed to stop trying to control my sex in order to relieve it of its determinism and to sublimate my body-sexual Oedipal character, I would be totally lost. But thanks to Becker's concise interpretation of psychoanalysis, I think I can understand myself a little better in this absurd world.

THanks Bjorn. "Denial of Death" is one of my favorite books (if you can call such a gloomy subject "favorite").What a wonderful channel! So many books, so little time-- especially when you're a septuagenarian. I can't read every book I want to, so I appreciate being directed to ones I'd appreciate most.

@@welcometoyourdeath481 If you're expecting clear-cut answer to things, then you are not set in a world-view to actually live out your beingness. No book gives clear-cut answers, However, this book speaks of the depth of existencial life and if you can have the courage to define your own individuality, you will find many answers.

I would say yes and no. I’ve heard many people talking about this book as very complex. I don’t think that should stop you, but it’s good to know. It’s not an easy read, but it’s not impenetrable. If you list some topics in psychology that you are interested in, then I can probably point you to some books that are great for beginners 😀

@@BookLabBjorn you think it's emotional childhood neglect that keeps us stuck in arrested development that's why we materialists. Because mater means mother in Latin
@transcendingthedyad5663

We are self-loathing because we have anuses and because the paradox brings about anxiety, rejection of the ego. Becoming responsible for what we are is a good solution to coping with the paradox. In the awareness of the self, we have separated ourselves from animals, and in doing so, while remaining animals, we dispise that which we see from afar.
