Great metronome exercise 👌

Très bien Denis. Swinging with Django is one song where Django just takes off like a rocket when he comes back in on rhythm. ❤

Good session, thank you. Yes, different rhythm textures for different songs and different lead players -- those are important details.

At 30:00 thats really important to keep the bouncieness of the rhythm going, a lot of people do to many accents/interruptions and in my opinion it really detracts from the music.

What is your opinion on practising this style of rhythm guitar with the metronome on 2 & 4? Especially for beginners. Some folks down here think this is the way to do practice, but I believe it leads to them playing overly heavy on two and four and drags like a drop bear in heat! 🐨 I suggested that beginners play on all beats, gradually developing a slight accent on 2 & 4. The second task I tell them is to set the metronome to beat one to develop consistency and learn to adjust as you suggested. I want to advise them to use the 2&4 metronome setting for lead practice; I would love your thoughts. PS Thank you for mentioning that rhythm guitarists need to be in the service of the music. When I back people up, I'm fully concentrating on what's happening and ensuring I'm sitting where I need to be. This is despite being accused of the contrary at times😂 It's all relative to your experience and how well you know the soloist to determine what they want from you. This is why I like rehearsing and jamming while most soloists don't. I get why soloists want to “keep it fresh” by going in cold, but something must be said about “breaking in” a new or unfamiliar rhythm section, especially on those important gigs. It's more for the rhythm section’s benefit rather than the soloist. It gives them half a chance of serving the music to their full capacity.

Drop bears aside, I really like the exercise I showed in this video. If the purpose of using a metronome is to detect one is slowing down or speeding up, the fewer beats there are the better imo. However, if you’re gonna put more beats in, I personally think it could be good to record on a DAW, so people can then visually check their rhythmic tendencies. I think a lot of people have trouble hearing whether they’re speeding up or slowing down until it’s too late. Adding the visual component can help a lot.

@25:22 Blasphemy!!! Repent!!! I sometimes practice to a metronome in 4/4 and I set the volume a bit softer than my guitar. If I can’t hear it I know I’m good, but when I start to hear it I know I’ve either sped up or slowed down. Now I have a better drill, thanks Denis!

Very good Maybe foot tap on 2&4 beat Also slot of screeching chord change noise since listening is the topic Please don’t get mad at my listener comment Thanks Use of my foot is something I’v started Using for myself with the metronome
@cameronjonesmusic
@cameronjonesmusic 4 месяца назад
Instead of tapping your foot. Try feeling the pulse in your body. I don't know about anyone else but I find audible foot-tapping a loud distraction and more often than not it's not in time! That's just my experience over the last 20 years or so 😂. I've had band leaders bark at musicians for loud foot-tapping, and it's a great relief when they stop the tapping, I can tell you!

Great stuff! Can you talk about arranging?
@DenisChangMusic

I don’t really consider myself any kind of expert on arranging lol but I do have a few little ideas here and there.

@@DenisChangMusic I guess I’m just curious because the norm is just play out a tune, but I notice some people play little arrangements, obviously taking inspiration from some traditional jazz tunes or whatnot. Also, the silent communication between jazz musicians… in the beginning of this video, the bassist dropped out and the lead signaled them to come in again. What are the norms? How do you tell people to do a tag, or for certain people to drop out, or to play a unified rhythm together, or?
@DenisChangMusic
@DenisChangMusic 4 месяца назад
@@OnreleTehMusicPlayer oooo in that case, yes there are certain things… that’s a good topic, i ‘d have to think about it a little bit but you are right that there are certain things in all styles of music that people just instinctively know. I ‘ll have to make a list of songs

@@DenisChangMusic please do! As a classical musician coming into jazz, this part of the jazz world is a bit mystifying and I would like to hear how others decode it.
