RE: Loud Pipes Saves Lives. I have pretty loud pipes on my two Harleys. I like the sound and the rumble. However, I have never been under the false illusion that the decibels of my pipes will make me more noticeable by cage motorists, when it matters to be noticed. As a past Safety Officer of my HOG Chapter, I repeatedly preached that lights are MUCH more important than loud pipes. Even more important than pipes or lights is being constantly aware of EVERYTHING going on around you. And to NEVER stay in someone's blind spot for more than a few seconds. In someone's blind spot, neither lights nor pipes will really matter. And I agree wholeheartedly about practicing low-speed skills. At least once a month, when I go to my local dealership, I'll go out back to the riding course parking lot and spend an hour or so, just running the skills exercises, especially the figure-8 inside the box and u-turns from a stop. Anybody can ride fast (due to the gyroscopic effect and momentum of the bike at speed). Slow-speed maneuvering is where the skill is at and is probably the biggest factor in keeping you from dropping the bike (especially big, heavy touring bikes). Good episode!!!

@velikijoxotnik
@velikijoxotnik Месяц назад
@FrankDank-ik7ic , we live in a society where everyone seems to want to be offended by something. My pipes sound nice (to me, at least), but they aren't obnoxiously loud. When riding through my neighborhood, I'm actually quite considerate and keep my bike in as high a gear and as low rpm as I can, to keep the rumble down. On the street, though, I let the pipes rumble. Grown-up cagers may scowl at the sound of my pipes, but their children love them and often signal for me to rev the engine, when idelling at a traffic light.

Defiantly agree with just about all of these. The loud pipes one get a lot of argument. There could for sure be instances where loud pipes have saved lives. I think the point is pipe volume is low on the list of things that’s going to save you. If you’re relying on that as opposed to training and staying out of blind spots and general common sense, that’s where the big lie comes in.

wife and I were riding to Yellowstone, and we had left Idaho Falls early in the morning. I got a truck drivers attention, let him know I was tucked in behind him since it was so early. At about noontime, running about 60mph into a long sweeping corner, on the other end, here's this mule deer standing in my lane. my first thought, go around its front. it. kinda danced slightly, I thought, take the back. I leaned hard right just squeeze past its hind end, stood the bike bike up here is another mule deer direct on front of us. I leaned hard left and just scooted around its front. I never touched a brake, never slowed down. This all happened in milliseconds it was all reactions. I attribute my years of riding and my 30 years of truck driving. I've been riding motorcycles for most of my life. I started when I was just 9 years old jumping on friends bikes and not just small ones. I got my first one of my own at 11 years old and I'm 70 now. I watch for, listen for and pay attention to motorcycles. I was driving south on 405 out of Bellevue Washington in my KIA Sportage, traffic was heavy, I was in the middle of three lanes. I looked in my sideview mirror engaged my left turn signal and looked over my left shoulder to move into the left lane as this lane was moving better and there was no one beside me. As I started moving over a middle aged man on a BMW hit his horn and moved up where I could see him beside me. This bike was in my blind spot and I've noticed thru the years of owning this car there IS a large blind spot to my left rear and also to my right and left front caused by the large side mirrors and the roof posts. I was startled and felt really guilty for not seeing him but was this entirely my fault. No. He was riding in a bad place and obviously if there was room for me to move over there was room for him to move up where I could see him. Say what you will but had he been on a Harley with louder pipes I'm sure I would have known he was beside me. I don't drive with my radio on, I like the quiet.

If say for me in California lane splitting they will almost always hear me before they see me because I’m not doing 100 mph faster then they are. When you are close to someone they will hear you before they stop looking at their phones. And no they don’t need to be loud enough for deaf people to hear grow up. I really don't get comments like this. It's tough to make a video that is 'perfect' for every viewer. If it's long, then viewers comment that it's too long (like you did). If it just hits some bullet points, then the comments will be that there is no substance to the video. The really nice thing about videos is that it's REALLY easy to skip forward. I did that some in this video. If a topic seemed to run on a bit too long or I felt that I already knew what was going to be said, I skipped forward a bit. Does that mean that the video was entirely too long? Hell no. Different topics will appeal more to different people. I liked the video and thought that he was on point with the topics.

@@gtb5216 it's not just the decibel of the siren but the pitch as well. That's why it's illegal for non emergency personnel to have them in most states. I would suggest that loud pipes do get attention. And can save lives. My two experiences were: I watched a deer coming across a field toward the road and it heard my pipes and turned away from the road. The second was the opposite. A driver froze and freaked at the sound and stopped his car in the intersection we were going thru, which I didn't expect, and it put me in the hospital. So a positive but also a negative outcome.

I have pretty loud pipes on my two Harleys (Road Glide and Heritage). I like the rumble and the decibels. I don't consider the loudness of the pipes to really matter to other motorists though. For example, when everyone is moving, sound travels forward very slowly. The driver in front of you, or likely even beside you, probably won't hear the pipes until you've passed them and they're now behind the pipes. I find it fascinating that these dear collisions that I have seen have happened during the daylight hours between 10 and 3 o'clock. these other collisions will be when in the house or on the porch.And we can hear the bike coming down the road And then you don't hear a bike, then you go out to see . I use to burn down these roads running eighty minimum , fyi running with low beam will help you alot. the deer are blinded . The headlight brightness of motorcycles are far by far more intensive than lights 40 years a go . There is not any evidence that suggests loud pipes actually reduce crashes because cars heard the motorcycle. Could it help, maybe. Obviously at very low speeds and at intersections. But as higher speeds any vehicle can, including motorcycles can outride the sound. Like police/ambulance can outdrive the impact of the sirens. The exhaust is to the rear, we move forward, sound is not pushing forward at speed. I’m a former traffic crash investigator with law enforcement. Unless I forgot something, a motorcycle reconstruction crash does not list loud pipes as a proximate cause. ( nor second or tertiary) Meaning if a motorcycle had quiet pipes that contributed to a crash.

@@Bill0167 "we don't measure it so it doesn't matter or have an impact" is all I read. You're arguing a negative correlation, of course you'd have no evidence. If quiet pipes make motorcycling more dangerous, Honda Goldwing riders would be dying like flies, but they’re not. Also take into account they spend far more hours in the saddle than sport bike riders. Have been to many European cities and they have a lot more motorcycles than we do relative to population. Never once did I hear a loud bike or car and they have a lower crash rate. In North America, we have a juvenile obsession with noise.

Loud pipes: while driving, I was abused by three bikers with loud pipes when I stopped before an intersection to give way to an ambulance. I could hear the ambulance, but could not see it because of buildings near the intersection. The bike went through, nearly causing an accident.

Laying down your bike is for racing The more contact you have with the ground the more friction you have to slow you down. In the small space of a race track, it's always better then hitting a barrier in the air at full speed! You will never go anywhere near those speed unless you're an idiot! So, Laying down your bike intentialy is probably the silliest thing I ever heard 😅 Never lay your bike down, you will lose control. It's not worth it

I know of one instance when a loud pipe saved a life. I was doing evening Uber a couple of months ago. Radio was down for the passenger preference. I kept hearing a bike, but neither me nor my passenger could see it. The bike popped up beside me at a red light. The idiot had a kill switch on his lights (including brakes). If I hadn't heard him, I would have lane changed on top of him.

I've had two accidents. The first was my fault. I was young, riding stupid, and had alcohol in my system. Fast forward over twenty years. The last accident I had was because my front brakes locked up. No clue why, but I went down. Walked away fine, but the bike was screwballed. I've replayed everything in my mind trying to figure out if there was any way I could've stayed upright, but there's nothing I can think of. I tore down the calipers, thoroughly cleaned them, flushed, brake fluid, etc. Still no clue why it happened. Thankfully no one was hurt, including myself, and no damage to anyone else's vehicles. Just my ego and my baby.

Bullshit on the loud pipes. Many times I’ve heard a bike before I saw it. That’s like saying more lights on your rear end don’t make you more visible. Second, full face helmets DO restrict your vision. I don’t care what the DOT rules say. I wear a half helmet most of the time. I have a full face that I wear when it’s raining or too cold. When looking back over the shoulder to change lanes, I absolutely see less with a full face versus a half. That’s a fact.
@819amaar
@819amaar 2 месяца назад
Fully agree 💯 - I absolutely see less with a full face. I can’t see my gauge without moving my head down, not an issue with a halfsie. Also when changing lanes, turning my head etc. I def see less on the sides (not to mention the wind blowing my head around a lot more with the full face). Regarding pipes I can’t count the times I have heard a bike before I saw it, and as a result tried to find the bike and give it some more space. Loud pipes def add visibility just like extra lights. This whole vid is a very strange take…

Riding a motorcycle is inherently dangerous not matter what you wear or what kind of bike you ride. Bottom line is you will NEVER see a professional racer out on the track WITHOUT a helmet or other protective gear. That 'it'll never happen to me' attitude just shows low I.Q. I've ridden well over 250,000 miles on my bikes, was a club road captain for 15 years, have been in 38 of the 50 states plus Canada and have been involved in accidents with brain-dead cage drivers several times. But NEVER have I 'laid it down' to avoid an incident. Giving up any control at all doesn't seem like a good solution to anything you might encounter on the road. Saying you have a friend that had a good outcome after doing this means your friend just got lucky. Every accident is an unknown quantity until everything comes to a stop and it mostly comes down to dumb luck. Also, I wear a helmet even in states I don't have to. Head injuries are very serious and I for one don't want one. Yes, life is better without a helmet but it's so much better without a brain injury. I also wear ear plugs INSIDE my helmet and still hear everything that goes on. Just not as loud! That being said, motorcyclists are one of the most civic minded demographics on the planet. Our Club participated in so many charity events over the years and donated monies to so many causes I can't keep count. One of the few things on the planet that most people can agree on for the most part is motorcycle brotherhood.

The view angle is based on looking straight ahead. When I turn my eyes, the helmet is in my field of view. I must turn my head even more to better check my blind spot. By doing so, I have less peripheral vision on the road in front of me. Don’t get me wrong, I always wear my helmet - I just think the argument is valid.

For me, it seems like loud pipes may prevent being rear-ended. Drivers definitely follow further behind when I'm on my bike than when I'm in my car. I would chalk it up to them being cautious while following a motorcycle, but my pickup is louder than my bike, and people follow even farther back when I'm driving it. Pretty sure they just don't like the growl right in their face.

Older full face helmets often had not only a narrower view but they had a deeper bucket that for some people caused the helmet to ride up onto their shoulders when they turned their heads to the side. In fact the helmet would often stop turning and your head would turn into the helmet. I had a Bell helmet in the 70s like that and a Nolan helmet like that in the late 80s. The new full helmets are much better designed with wider shells, actual ventilation, and far more padding. The view is a lot better too.

I have a full face helmet for at least twenty years now and can't see any part of the helmet in my peripheral vision. Same as I could see without the helmet. So much for restricting the vision... or maybe I need to get my eyes checked. BTW, in the vicinity of a million miles riding on all sorts of bikes over 55 years, put over 100k miles on various bikes including sport bikes, Gold Wings, and Harleys. Using my mirrors, lane placement, aware of my surroundings, no tailgating, don't screw around where there are things you can hit that don't move, rider skills development, and other unspoken habits of defensive driving have served me quite well over the decades without emitting absurd amounts of noise. Also found little use for a horn, same reason. Where a horn might have helped other than expressing your frustration it's probably too late to change the immediate problem. Just some musings on the topics. Enjoy!

Lane positioning and formal training save more lives than loud pipes. I've ridden in a group when someone else had loud pipes and I couldn't even hear or feel my own bike. So, how loud do pipes need to be before they are obnoxious? Also, read the operators manual. It's against the law to modify the exhaust.

There has only been one time “I had to lay her down” and it was a very specific circumstance, it was on a downhill gravel road that had a cable across the road to close it, it blended in with the background, by the time I seen it, I tried braking to a stop, realizing that I wasn’t going to be able to stop before hitting the cable I locked the rear brake to slide the bike under and stopped on the other side of said cable, that’s been the one and only time that was the best option to not get injured

I always wear a helmet, whether it is a half, modular, or full face. I have NO problem with vision issues. I have not had to lay a bike down, but I have had to turn 90° in less than 3 feet (instead of t-boning a Cherokee that pulled out right in front of me). I high sided and got thrown, but did not hit the Jeep straight on, saving my life. Drivers pay more attention to loud music than loud pipes. I had a stage 3 Screaming Eagle Sportster (1992) with straight pipes, and let me.tell you, it was LOUD. People still came into my lane, and I was still hit on it. I got my Street Glide Special, and since, I have cars telling me to turn my music down, meaning they are annoyed by it, but it has their attention.

These are all faulty arguments because for any given event a particular course of action may have a better outcome than another, however we don’t know in the moment and since we can’t see other outcomes we will never know. Laying a bike down may travel farther than a bike at threshold braking and or a swerve. The lower speed of braking and evasive maneuvers may reduce injury over laying ‘er down. Laying ‘er down may create the angle and barrier that is less injury than impacting and ejection. It is only by the Grace of God go I. We can only do what we think is best for the moment and see what happens. We will never know if it was the best possible outcome or the worst.

Been on the street 50 years this year. I have good peripheral vision and grateful for it. I think a lot of people have it hung in there mind that all full and modular helmets are like the old Bell full face helmet I call the Bender helmet. They were awful. I remember dad bringing me one home in like 1968. I never rode with it and dad took it back. I stayed with a 3/4 helmet for another 20 years. And I did have to lay a bike down years ago in SoCal. I wasn't speeding and when that battleship sized 1978 Caprice pulled out from a blind wall. No place to go,, period! I was going to hit that car. Head on traffic, trees to the right. No way this was going to end well. I stomped on the rear brake and went down to the ground. As the bike hit the car and then bounced off it and went into head on traffic. I slid up under the rear of the car looking at the gas tank. Tore my helmet, jacket and jeans up with a bit of rash on my ass,,, but walked away. It was the once in a lifetime miracle. Loud pipes do save life. And they do sound good. I have a Goldwing and people are always trying to lane change into me on that bike because it is so quiet. I never get lane changed into on the smaller less lit up and louder MT-09. The Akra exhaust gets their attention quick. As far as growing out of a bike. I take it as more of a need for change. And it's shocking how many riders can't get on a bike regardless of size, style, years in the saddle that cant do full lock U-turns or ride curbs like a balance beam. Everytime I buy a new bike at a dealership I always do full lock turns, figure 8's, ride curbs and sometime parking stops like a balance beam, up on the pegs. Some hard quick stops at slow speed, creep around on it and such in there parking lot before I pull out on the new bike and go my way. I might even make a suspension adjustment before I leave the dealer. I also believe beginner's need beginner bikes to learn on. Learning to ride is a very complex task and it takes awhile to get all the tools in the box. No such thing as saving money riding a motorcycle. Esp. in the USA. Those days started ending in the late 70's and early 80's. Motorcycles are money pits like boats now days. And the last nail was driven into that coffin when yuppies started paying full price for way over priced POS Harleys. Then all the other companys saw just how stupid many were and the prices across the board started skyrocketing for bikes, gear and accessories. Stupid people buy on payment aren't smart enough to figure out how bad they are ripping themselves off. There has never been a motorcycle made worth MSRP. I've only finance one bike in my life to full term of the loan. And have never paid MSRP muchless market adjustment BS or any of the other stupid crap dealers now come up with. I've been a partner in a couple of dealerships between 1995 and 2010. We always discounted bikes, gear, parts and accessories. Insurance has went through the roof. And if you don't do your own maint. and service your pissing money away and getting substandard if not at times dangerous service. It's not good now days. Always keep rain gear on the bagger/touring bikes. Never use a tinted face shield, always clear with a built in tint inner visor and my glasses are alway auto tint. I don't like a tank bag at all on my bikes. I do use a tail bag and try to keep a light rain jacket in it. I also keep my riding jeans and firehose fabric pants treated with 3M water repellent spray. I'm a 63 year old grey beard and the women still want a ride. Young, old, pretty and ugly. They like the Goldwing and the little evil looking MT-09. Have to tell them no. The wife owns the rear seat on the Wing and there are no passenger pegs on the Yamahammer. Just keep the bike lit up and on your game when it comes to dear and critters. The Goldwing has a pair of Clearwater Erica's on it that turn night to day. And by and large only ride the MT-09 at night in the town I live in.

“Had to layer down” I down shifted quickly because a Subaru dead stopped without warning. Dropped 2 gears with minimal pressure on the rear brake the back tire locked down, it was then sliding and I wasn’t going to get it stopped without hitting the back of the car and risking bending the forks on my new bike. Literally had it under an hour. It was going to be worse had I not locked the front brake and slammed the bike. Didn’t get my leg out the way I meant to but that slowed me enough for the Subaru to manage getting the hell out of my way. But that was with nowhere to go no time to stop. Lost a back tire had a blow out riding on wires like an idiot, I was going 70 in a curve and was able to hold it and get it stopped thought everything I was doing through. 2009 in a curve car was across double yellows dodged front tire found the shoulder (grass) so I knew it wasn’t salvageable and wasn’t going with the bike down the mountain and I chose to jump off and let her go on down the mountain all by its lonesome. Each situation I saw what was happening and made the best of the bad decisions with the least amount of risk to my body and my life. That bike is replaceable. Do not kill yourself attempting to save it know when to bail period. There isn’t always a way through a bad situation. Take your least bad option

I have the LS2 Advant X Carbon modular and I have no field view issues: The LS2 Advant X modular helmet is DOT certified. It meets or exceeds the DOT FMVSS 218 standard, which is the U.S. Department of Transportation's federal safety standard for motorcycle helmets. This certification ensures that the helmet has passed rigorous testing for impact protection and other safety criteria. In addition to being DOT certified, the LS2 Advant X also meets the ECE 22.06 standard, which is the European safety standard for motorcycle helmets. This dual certification demonstrates that the helmet meets high safety standards both in the United States and Europe. I also have Shoei RF-SR and I would say the field of vision is, if anything, larger in the LS2.

I started riding (on the street) in 92/93. Have only been in two collisions, neither were my fault. I have never "had to lay her down". I do think there might be a meaning we are missing tho - In the event you are heading i to an obstacle and, in order to swerve around it, you HAVE TO push your lean angle further than your bike is capable of. You lean over so far (to change the path of an imminent impact) that you drug metal parts and low sided. THAT would be "i had to lay it down". If your choices are strike something OR swerve so hard you low side, push it til ya "lay it down".
