I remember fondly in 1963 - 4 in South Africa. My friends dad was a race enthusiast and took us to Kyalami several times. I remember Bobby Oltoff had a Galaxi 500 and raced against Ford Lotus Cortinas, Alfas, Datsuns and various other 4 cylinder cars. On the straights that big V8 would run away from all of them, only to be caught during braking and cornering. You could always hear it coming, that V8 sound is what brought me to America 41 years ago.

I know. I bet this was what it was like racing Nascar in the 60s. I think the cars were pretty much production chassis until 68 then they started using purpose built race cars. Race car drivers back then had to be skilled and tough to survive.

I love those big Galaxies! My dad had a 63 XL500 convertible when I was a youngster. Pretty sure it had a 390 in it. Talk about 'man handling' the steering wheel of that beast! This guy was stomping on the gas pedal when most of us would have been frantically trying to brake..... a beautiful piece of driving!

The mighty Galaxy. In Australia, (I know what I'm talking about at home) they were never unbeatable, but they were the car to beat for quite a while. The major competition came from a semi-factory effort that ran Mustangs, (Team Moffet) and at Bathurst, which has one mid length straight and two long ones, they also had trouble with the Holden Monaros that had 350 Chevs in them. But the Galaxy was an odd car. It's big fish, but it drives like a somewhat smaller one. You could never say it was agile or handled well, but it was a whole lot better than the size and shape would suggest, and it sure had some engine. All the things it raced against, had their own problems. The biggest issue with the Galaxy, was getting the damn thing stopped, but that wasn't a problem unique to that car, or even the big heavy cars - everything had that problem. Today, you can buy brakes that work. Even standard brakes can be fitted with real hard high temp pads, and they'll mostly work. That wasn't the case in the mid '60s. Everything was good for about two or three laps, and then the brakes would go away. Then it became a game for the driver to figure out how to slow the thing down. People would go down a gear at the absolute upper rev limit, and start throwing the car side to side, to scrub off speed... and naturally, that wasn't real good for rear tyre life... Interestingly, for all you Brits, the car to beat before the Galaxy arrived, was the old round Jaguar. They weren't all that fast in a straight line, but they were fast enough, they handled well, and they had really good brakes.

That’s some Americana for you. That’s barely even a full sized car too. The goal of these old cars was to be comfortable and roomy and they definitely did that. They weren’t big cars just because. They were amongst the more luxurious and lavish cars back then. It’s like a Cadillac goin through there. I think that’s what people don’t understand about American cars. They ran smooth down the highway and you had room to stretch your legs out on that road trip across the country. British luxury cars are large too so I don’t see the argument of big American cars being a bad thing their roominess and smoothness of driving is their strong suit.

When I was a kid my older brother Geoff had a 62 Ford Galaxie with the 406 Tri-power as his street car :) He and his wife later bought a 18 foot Hallett flat bottom drag boat that had a Holman n Moody race prepped 427 with two 800 cfm Holly carbs. We would twist it to 7100 prm when demolishing any boat that wanted to race us at "Inboard alley" Parker Dam area of Colorado River in the late 60's early 70's :) That boat was a blast! and turned in a 107 mph quarter mile run at the Long Beach 1/4 mile boat drags running pump gas :)

Back in the day. They would race these big heavy American cars with no brakes to speak of against the original mini.
