This video is a bit different - I've gone off script, as a result the video is a bit longer, but it was much quicker to make. Please give me some feedback on this format, as it's unusual for my channel, but in order to grow I feel I need to speed up production! Also, Imperator ROME is now 75% off on cdkeys, if you feel you're gonna end up getting the game at some point, you pretty much cannot get it cheaper anywhere else -> www.cdkeys.com/pc/games/imperator-rome-steam-pc?mw_aref=REPUBLIC

Hey Republic, I like this format and didn't notice any drop in quality. It's still very noticeable that you knew what topics you wanted to cover, which puts you miles away from other youtubers who just keep jabbering for 10 minutes without actually saying anything. It works for me... may depend on the context of the video some, in ones like this though where you’re just doing an informal overview (as opposed to an official review of a game), and listing your thoughts, it works well. I’ve never been one to mind if these sort of videos sound a little organic. I have noticed you haven’t seemed to be making much lately.

@@samsonstone764 All Paradox games start either as shitshows or lacking and Paradox gradually adds to them, this is actually a smart move because they can rake in more money through DLC's and the polished under-developed game makes it easier to smooth out the edges, I remember that in HOI4 and Stellaris, it's just how Paradox works, and I approve of their strategy
@apossiblyhereticalalphaleg3595

Interesting changes. How your spouse can help you out this way is far too modern though. I would have coupled it with adviser stats, even if the spouse is one of the advisers it seems ok to me. The other thing which is by far the most important to me is replay-ability. You only glanced over it from an art perspective. I don't think many people are hyped over art, apart from giving some immersion. The main issue is if it makes any sense to play again after one run. Are there any differences in ideas, strategy, religion and tech influencing the way the tag behaves in a major way. If not I don't even wanna try the game again. Even if they introduce some significant flavor per tag and I still cant change the religion or culture of my tag (switching) I again (sadly) will not try the game again. Let us see how this pans out 😎

Maybe I missed it, but I dont understand how you can make money when importing a commercial trade ? Like if i bring wood or iron, my economy is actually increasing just because i have trade. this doesnt make sense, since i import things, i should spend money, not make any. in the aftermatch yes, how you use that trade to make money is important, but in my gameplay i just do whatever trade just because it brings me money. it kinda make no sense and have this boring feeling for trade
@RepublicOfPlay
@RepublicOfPlay 5 лет назад
I agree trade is boring in this game - I think the idea is that a trade good makes money because it increases commerce. The amount you make from trade is based on how many citizens you have in the province. This would suggest the idea is that citizens are buying/selling and you're making money that way.

I’ve always thought Paradox should look to the Civilization series for inspiration on making streamlined and attractive interfaces as well as adding flavor through presentation.
@R3GARnator
@R3GARnator 5 лет назад
Stainless Steel mod for Medieval II Total War had absolutely gorgeous interface decorations themed on each faction.
@briancline7349
@briancline7349 5 лет назад
R3GARnator the decoration of the UI is an important aspect of what I mentioned, but there is more to it than just that. One key example is diplomacy in the Civ games, going all the way back to the original Civilization... in a great idea to add immersion, instead of having diplomacy consist of a dry list of countries and possible proposals for each, you actually click to initiate a diplomatic session with another nation, and the game shifts to a screen showing a rendered version of that civilization’s leader and advisors, with conversation options containing the diplomatic proposals and actions. The modern versions of Civ have the distinct 3D rendered cartoon like version of the various leaders. They also kept this from becoming cumbersome, with although it consists of a separate screen the options are clearly available and you don’t have to sit through unnecessary fluff. Other things I was thinking of include showing an image of each city on the map based on the size of the city, it’s nationality/culture group, and perhaps key buildings constructed. Graphically depicting different military units is also key for adding to immersion and making the game feel less like a spreadsheet... Paradox could have the main different units have a 3D model, and similar to Civ 6 have each army consist of four different models... in the case of Imperator the composition could be based on the proportion of troops in each army; if you have an army made of 75% infantry and 25% cavalry, show three models of the infantry unit and one of the cavalry. Equal parts infantry, artillery, cavalry, and archers? Show one model of each. Different animations for different tactics would also be nice. These are just many possible ways Paradox could add a ton of flavor and immersion to their games to make them feel less sterile and board game like. The mechanics of the game would not need to change to incorporate these changes either... ever since playing EU4 I’ve thought things like this could go a long way into making Paradox games feel and appear more mainstream and less niche.

@@briancline7349 30 years in any PDX game (except HoI4) is always so alt-history, all the faces will be randomly generated by then, meaning personalities and such will also have to be randomly generated and this makes something as comprehensive as Civ game portraits realistically impossible. Now that said, even Stellaris proves that that doesn't mean you can't have any flavour. In Stellaris, in your diplomatic actions you always see a representative of the other species and there are little dynamically created dialogue quips, based on their ethics, government type and species-archetype ("my slimesack is vibrating from laughter when just thinking of the puny Hrashk'aaz military power"). The other PDX games are rather falling short in those regards, and messages have the exact same pre-canned static phrases, no matter who is saying them to whom. Having more dynamically generated responses and personalities and some back-and-forth messaging would go a long way. In CK2 or Imperator, you could derive a character's personality based their top 2 stats (resulting in basically 16 personalities, definitely in the realm of possibilities), with some traits (lunacy, zealous, erudite etc.) overwriting that; basically the same way Stellaris does it with their ethics and some civics (fanatical purifiers etc.). And I fully agree with the visual army composition. The biggest missed opportunity for that is HoI4. There are actually a lot of different army models in HoI4, but you wouldn't realise that in game, because 80% off all units use the basic infantry model, and the other 20% are tanks; however there are super specific ones like anti-tank guns or rocket artillery (and an upcoming cosmetic DLC will add even more specialised ones like tank destroyers), but you never ever see those models, because there are no "anti-tank-gun" divisions, they're always attached to infantry. Now, if an army would be represented by 6 little dudes, having 4 models be infantry, 1 AT-guns and 1 rocket arty, that rocket arty and AT-gun model would actually see some use.
@apossiblyhereticalalphaleg3595
@@araxiel2051 For CK2 and Imperator, two games who have been trying to sell themselves on the fact they have characters (with CK2 succeeding), it would be very important to implement the diplomacy system you suggested, principally to CK2, where the game revolves around the characters

I disagree with calling Political Influence a mana resource. For me, what determines if a resource is mana or not is how logical the generation is and how much sense it makes for that generated resource to be spent on whatver it is spent on. With mana, your rulers innate abilities contributing to a pool of points that are then stored over generations and can be spent on things from technology to making your troops go faster, or from bribery to fabricating claims made very little sense. There was no sense in those things being tied together. Now, political influence is generated by how loyal your governors are, and all of the ways you can spend this influence is inherantly political in nature. This precludes political influence from being "mana", again just imo. Mana is not very well defined so different people will have their own interpretations... but that's mine at least.
@RepublicOfPlay
@RepublicOfPlay 5 лет назад
It is mana though, it's an abstraction of a resource. Nobody spends political influence in real life, that makes it mana. Not saying it's bad, just saying that's what it is - Influence and Unity in Stellaris are Mana, but Alloys, Minerals, Energy, Food are not for example. People could make the case that Oratory power, was the same as Political Influence, but just from one character. I don't think saying what you spend the resource on makes it mana or not. I think the concept of the resource is what does.

@0MVR_0
@0MVR_0 5 лет назад
Gold is indeed a material representation of economic capability. Just as the ability to wield power at others' expense is a physical manifestation of political influence. When a ruler was able to chastise and embarrass his most powerful governor without fear of repercussion the social dynamics behind relations was in play. He may not be handing someone coins but an exchange is certainly being made. The definition of mana should not be whether the concept had historical use but how far removed from the mutual interplay of 'using' them is. If Stellaris said you gained minerals by the talent of your single 'industry leader' that too would be mana despite the practical tokenism of the resource.

Its amazing but I really wish you had explained the pop influence now in the new update, because atm you want a bunch of freemen if you want manpower or a ton of citizen if you want money, also do slaves promote alone or stay slaves forever? How pops promote really has a huge implication if the old mechanics are still present. I usually send slaves around to provinces that have a chance of making extra goods, glad thats possible, but I also match that with the pops in that province, some are bursting with freemen while some are bursting with citizens, really curious how that goes. I don't mind (much) about the migration, seems like a natural fantastic system, afterall citizens/freemen are...well.. free and seems well balanced to not overpopulate an area with the attraction thing, however it is critical to know how manpower will work with the military buildings modifiers, cuze if I spam an area with military then all freemen go away, then it makes me less inclined to make any buildings at all, plus is enforces the player to expand and chug pops as much as possible to get the most manpower. Basically would love to know what each pop type does in the new update and how their actions are balanced with the uncontrolled migration system. (while at it, how does colonizing work then?)
@danuk500
@danuk500 5 лет назад
Yeah kind of worried about the self promoting too. If my slaves start auto promoting then how can I make cities dedicated to generating resource surpluses? They really ought to include a feature to off-set auto promotions if they do include it.
@aonirsplayground6224
@aonirsplayground6224 5 лет назад
@@danuk500 In the video i think he mentions slaves are the only ones that dont promote nor move with migration, so that would be safe, but if the rest of the pops move freely, then you can't really specialize a region at all, unless you specialize the whole province, but then again, if with time freemen promote to citizen what becomes of manpower? Thats the key we need explaining really, is each pop doing the same old thing or are they influencing something else, or is manpower working differently.

The top bars circle buttons should be collapsible like how to access tabs in EU4 you click your country's shield. As for the cities/provinces again EU4 has a bottom left screen with information on it. Building details or institution spread are behind collapsible windows that can be closed and opened based on what you need and want to take up room on the screen. Best thing Paradox could do is to add collapsible windows for tabs so that everything looks much cleaner

One of the biggest problems with the game design that I hope is soon rectified is the extremely long time taken for armies to march from A to B. Inb4 people criticize ancient infrastructure, according to Arrian, Alexander (who died before the start of the game) marched from Chaeonia to Thebes in roughly 14 days, a distance of nearly 500km, or 35km/day. When I played this game as Macedon, moving from tile to tile took an army on average 8 days (in any case much longer than it should), and this was insufficiently remedied by forced-marching the army. This is so inaccurate that it is alone enough to kill the mood of the game. Also, not a big fan of the shattering feature where armies are allowed free passage/invulnerability back to their capital after defeat at the cost of some mana. I know this is a PI feature from many of their games, but it's largely inaccurate and prevents the possibility of all out debacles that historically did occur. The ability to destroy a fleeing army was mostly dependent on the availability of good, swift cavalry. My impression is that if your cavalry can defeat the enemy's rearguard cavalry, the player should be able to wipe out or significantly reduce the remaining enemy army.

Same here I mean I’m not mad or anything, but I just was like yeah let’s give it time it will develop. However I had a friend share his Steam library with me so I got to make a good playthrough and it is a solid base, playthrough was fun but a bit of time into my second one and it whittles down a bit. I make sure to get the base game on sale and wait out 2-3 dlcs, game will be superb then.

Dyslexia is so common among youtubers, it's interesting, makes me wonder how it contributed to names and languages changing over time.

I don't have Dyslexia, I just don't care about ancient pronunciations because there's nowhere to draw the line.

Switching letters is a clear case of dyslexia and has nothing to do with pronunciation, but I did not mean to rag on you I was just stating an observation I have made that has sparked my interest, in particular how this "disability" correlates to that which drives a person to become a public figure or how it correlates to such a person becoming popular.

During the segment on population growth halfway in the video you repeatedly named the city of Ornoi "Oroni" even as you read it from different sources of different size and font, maybe you were tired or whatever, did'nt mean to make a big deal out of it. It's just a thing I noticed and thought I'd mention to see if it got any response.

they basically turned different mana's into a single mana currency now. you still need it for important things. ck2, hoi4, vic2 etc. are so much better at this, even eu4 that has a monarch point system. we'll see in 6 months how well imperator does, but it might be... that it remains a bad game design, except for the minority of hard pdx fans, of course
@Pseudoluky
@Pseudoluky 5 лет назад
Its a little different than just that. The aim is probably the same as the influence in Stellaris. In that game you can affect how much you gain or not gain but not by that much. Is not like in EU4 where having a leader be a 222 or a 666 is worlds apart. the idea is probably too make the influence more or less constant with more impact-full choice for where to spend it. If you use it to claim land then you cant change laws etc..

I have lost interest in Imperator completely. The game is a lost cause. It'll never be great.

Loosing interest would mean to stop watching videos about it and commenting on it. We are often attached without realising it.

They actually removed the mana! XD I wasn't expecting that. I thought they will just throw the game in a trash bin since it's so unpopular. But then they still didn't removed it completely.. Kinda a half assed job. Why won't they just remove it completely it's a very STUPID concept to be honest. It's like when an adult(player base) is telling a kid(Pdx) that that doesn't work like that but the kid is just so stubborn that the kid still won't listen..... so stupid really.

This definitely seems like a big step in the right direction. A lot of the new systems remind me of HOI4 (which is my favorite of their grand strat games, so I'm not gonna complain). The two things I'd like to see are definitely UI improvements, like you mentioned (it's so, so bad) and ideally, a bit more structure to what you could do next, like focuses in HOI4. I know that's probably not that common a thing to want, but I really like the gentle guidance of picking focuses, and would love to see it implemented in I:R

It's pretty easy for them to fix it after they stripped it down to bare bones to sell it back as DLC bit by bit, after throwing us a bone or two like they are acting in good faith...

wish this game had somekind of manual battle or cinematic view at the least i just dont care much for games where all you see his a world map the entire game ,like hoi4 etc... i may try this regardless when this patch comes out none the less if they added somekind of tweeks to battle this game would be a gem thats for sure
@RepublicOfPlay

Start off with something like Stellaris - after a while of playing a game with deep systems, you don't really miss the battles. It would of course be nice to see though.

Well then Paradox games are not going to be for you, they're about the bigger picture of running a nation. If they spent a lot of time (which is money) on adding ground battles it would detract from the rest of game development.

@RepublicOfPlay
@RepublicOfPlay 5 лет назад
It's not slower... I don't think so anyway - you could do it with policies before gradually and that was usually fine. Now you can do it with policies and buildings combined. The assimilation/conversion speed should be pretty fast (relatively speaking) when you build up. I mean it is slower than doing it with mana of course.
