Good. Paradox needs some competition to prevent them from releasing DLC platforms.

that's funny because this already has a massive DLC - a whole part of the game, the battles are where Field of glory II is more or less a DLC for this game. To me its a massive drawback that you have to own another game just to make a feature of a game more fleshed out.

Looking forward to trying this one. FoG:E's main cutting edge, over games like Imperator: Rome for example, is the ability to play battles on a detailed tactical level, albeit using a separate game. For any self-respecting grognard this is huge. That said, I:R is making up lost ground. With the combined 'Pompey' and 'Cicero' updates the game is rapidly approaching the position of being a solid V1.0 release - the release we were expecting in the first place. I:R will never have tactical battles, that's just not what PDS do, but it does (now) have a more nuanced empire management approach to that of FoG:E. I still reckon there's room for both games in my play schedule but I have a sneaky feeling that I:R will become the proverbial come-back kid, not the least reason being that PDS support their games with continual updates whereas AGEod have something of a reputation for-- well, not doing that. Maybe FoG:E heralds a change in that policy - I certainly hope it does.

@@Snarfindorf As far as I know it's developed by two seperate teams so maybe it wasn't easily doable? Not sure. If it were up to me, I'd probably have it just be one game, and increase the price, but provide a discount for people who own FOG2 already. OR just bundle them as a discounted package on steam. FOG2 is 50% off on the steam sale so I hope people who get Empires grabbed the battle game on sale.

Josh Scanes I’d say CK2 was their last respectable game. Eu4 is borderline unplayable without 5-6+DLCs so the complexity in that is hidden behind a paywall. Yes CK2 hides some flavor behind pay but it receives a lot of free updates and mods can make up the balance.

Slitherine is probably a Indy developer which is why the game somewhat looks basic. Paradox on the other hand, while considered an Indy developer, are one of the major ones. They’re a corporation with hundreds of staff.
@rudolphaust8295
@rudolphaust8295 5 лет назад
GsG were super niche until Eu4 with its streamlined design established a new segment of the market. The vast majority of GsG games look at act a lot like this, if anything this is deeper and higher quality than most of them. It’s not as beginner friendly as paradox or CA schlock but for a GsG it’s above the usual standard.
@blueknight1706
@blueknight1706 5 лет назад
Rudolph Aust that’s exactly the problem it’s too basic looking, games have developed and yes people still enjoy spread sheets sims and pixel games, but to be a competitor in the mainstream market they have to make a decent looking and more fleshed out game, IMO they should’ve either spent more time polishing the game, or (because spending a lot of time on a game can eat away your money) make other games before getting into the GsG market
@rudolphaust8295
@rudolphaust8295 5 лет назад
blueknight1706 but they’re not after the mainstream market. An indie company developed an indie game for the market they’ve been servicing for about five years now. When every game tries to serve the same market they make the same types of games. This one atleast has innovative mechanics and concepts and appeals to the portion of the market that’s been neglected of novelty for going on 4 years now. Just because visually it’s not impressive doesn’t mean it hasn’t included some evolved mechanics to fit with the times. That mechanical depth and polish are just less obvious to people who only enjoy the bigger titles. They’re not just getting into GsG games they’ve established their presence and are continuing to service their niche with a title that appears to be capable of outperforming their actual competition.

if they changed two things I would buy it: 1. the fact that you have to own another game to fletch out a feature of the game, the battles is a massive drawback. That's a DLC policy that more insane of that of Paradox. 2. the fact that your building choices are random. That's total BS that you have to play a lottery on what buildings you want to build. Make the battles for Field of glory II, a main feature of Field of Glory Empires, and have the option to disable the random nature of the build order and I would buy this instantly.
@KrolPotato
@KrolPotato 5 лет назад
Okay. Slitherine made some design decisions that may not appeal to some people but, on the other hand, they were not making either "Total War:Rome" or "Rome:Imperator" clone with the old and tired mechanics. This game follows the FOG2 and, apparently, players of FOG2 asked for the ability to play "Empires" battles in the FOG2 and the developers said, "Sure, no problem". It is a very nice feature that no other similar title has but it is not a requirement for anyone to buy FOG2 in order to play "Empires". And building choices is not random but, as someone already mentioned above, contextual. Again, it's a different and fresh mechanic from the same old yaaaawn Paradox and Creative Assembly titles.
@rudolphaust8295

The games are made by different developers so it’s an extra bit that doesn’t need to be there. Without it the battles are just reminiscent of paradox games. At least there’s deeper alternative than the standard system

I find Paradox DLC to be far crazier than this. A Paradox DLC can add one big or a couple small new mechanics plus some flavour. For this they charge upwards of 20€. In this case those 20€ buy you an entire game which doubles as an expansion for this. But obviously it can be argued at great length what is a fair price. So many factors and perspectives to take into account.

It's pretty clear that you can play tactical battles without owning FOG2, it's just that the tactical battles in FOGE aren't as detailed yet play faster than they do in FOG2. I own FOG2 and I'll probably play a lot of battles just using FOGE's system to save time, and then with battles where one side has overwhelming force, I'll probably just auto-resolve.

I've been a beta volunteer for Empires since Dec. The in-game battles are not simple RNG auto-rolls. Terrain, leadership, supply, force composition and experience all play a role in determining victory. Ignore those and you're a breakfast entree. They added the FoG 2 system as a favor to those that own it, but you don't need it to play this game. I don't own it. Paradox gave you another serving of the same old thing. This is new. None of the factions are slaves to history. Rome isn't the one you know, it's the unique Rome you build yourself. Or you can win the game starting as Rhodes or the Picts. Yes the buildings are randomly available. However, you have several choices of buildings, so one choice is probably going to be a building you were going to construct anyway. I never had a problem forming a strong economy or great arsenal of empire. Everything works, if you let it. IMHO, this game is really awesome.

They won't be.Slitherine is the publisher,but the Field of Glory : Empires (the one being reviewed) and Field of Glory 2 are made by different devs so the the engines,code and all that stuff are quite different.Nevertheless don't think too much of the export,it's actually less time than most loading screens in TW games and you 'll only probably export the important ones,leaving small skirmishes to the built-in "auto-resolve". Honestly I think they did it because they are referring to a niche audience and most of them own Field of Glory 2 (the one with the battles,obviously) so they'd ask for it anyway down the line.

Let's see: you load up main menu in empires, then load a saved game. When 2 armies engaging you quit, load another game main menu, load battle, play, quit. Reload empires main menu, load saved game and you have to this every single battle if you want to play it...yeah, interesting. @Gibius1 Any game mechanic that's RNG is not a good choice if it can be represented through hard mechanics instead. Making buildings random is just bullshit of the highest calibre. Like random EU4 events. Nothing strategic about random buildings, since you can't actually PLAN for them.
@devoncop
@devoncop 5 лет назад
@@lite4998 The building choices are contextual and NOT random. There are over 400 different buildings in game. It means that campaigns have great replayability and it is not just a case of working out formulae for optimum order of buildings like in Civ or EU 4
@lite4998
@lite4998 5 лет назад
@Gibius1 The problem is that there will still be an optimal strat, but occasionally the game might just not give you the option of taking it. That won't be an issue though if the 'optimal strat' also depends on the choices made by other nations, so it'll constantly be in flux. Hence it doesn't need a randomness factor. Chess technically has an optimal strat for every turn you take, but there are just so many variations depending on your opponent's move. Something like that is ideal really. But apparently I was wrong when I called it random anyway. So how exactly is the player able to influence the building options if that's the case and it's not random?

Rome was run like a giant Mafia. If you wanted to build something, you needed to pay off the right politicians and guilds. The pop system reminds of Stellaris and I like it though constantly moving around popa manually seems tedious. The battles r ok. Didn't like the turn based battles so not gonna get that other game. I’ll give this game props compared to Paradox with at least having some sort of more interesting way of depicting battles that shows the different impact different unit compositions can have (if you chose to use a high ratio of archers for example you get to see that on the battlefield and watch the impact your choice has as the enemy gets hit with large amounts of arrows but at the same time seeing your infantry potentially being outnumbered). The battle system looks like it could allow for some degree of pre battle strategy or tactic that could be chosen before the battle starts but since the game actually puts the units on a battlefield and shows them fight it out your tactics could vary based on the enemy’s formations and numbers (ie. they have low amounts of infantry but lots of archers, while you have lots of cavalry? Chose a flanking focused tactic that has your frontline just try to hold and fight defensively or something while your cavalry waits for the infantry to engage and be occupied before circling around to the flanks on each side and attacking the archers back there before charging the enemy infantry in the rear). I couldn’t tell if the game has anything like this or not but it’s system seems like it would allow a much better tactics system than Imperator’s bland modifiers.

Random fun fact: the (I think PR manager of) Slitherine has announced than if the game sells 250k copies they'll release a full Latin version,as they have released a version of the game trailer in Latin.

Hope they have it in their roadmap to just have FoG battle system in the game. Knowing that battle system exists just makes me want that, but I am not going through the process of closing-opening two separate titles...

It does it automatically for you as I showed - the only difference is instead of one loading screen, there's two where you have to click a button in beteween. but I understand.

The game is good and all but I think building slots and cap for pops kinda makes the game unfriendly for playing super tall, eh? Can we increase building slots and pop cap with using game mechanics? Better, can we remove building slots and pop capacity entirely via modding? I'm aware they put those limitations to balance the game and without those limitations, game would become unbearable to many people but it's also wrong to limit some players who wants to create an ancient megacity state :D Also this game needs India. Add China too and it's GOTY for me. DLC(which doesn't suck) when? Lastly, there should be a research and technology mechanic which gives bonuses to units, generals, trade, pop growth etc.

Changing the number of buildings allowed per population: 1 mn modding. There is no population cap, it is a rumor.

Philippe Malacher Uhh not to be rude but I couldn't understand what you said. It's okay, english is not my native language either. Are you saying 1 population = 1 building slot? Also what is "1 mn modding"?

I've been following the game,intensively, for the past month and while you're right that it doesn't do much in way giving individual nations unique mechanics,it'd would have to pick and choose.At the start of the game Rome is irrelevant compared to the giants the Diadochi are and they don't get any more attention than a few extra modifiers and events.Given how small the publisher and developer are,for me at least,they're worth a free pass on that one.Besides it could be argued that implementing a more in-depth government for tribals would serve half the playable nations but I think less than half will want to play a tribe than one of the famous greek,indo-greek or italic countries.Knowing them,they are in touch with the wants of the community and so long as it serves the gameplay, they'll add features.

The Plebian and Patrician Parties are two of the ruling administrations that as Republican Rome you can find yourself run by. Both have very different bonuses and maladies to Rome depending on which faction is dominating.
@devoncop
@devoncop 5 лет назад
@@RemusKingOfRome All major factions and significan factions have unique rules applying to their particular countries. For example Ptolemaic Egypt gains extra Legacy points (think Victory Points) each turn its total naval power exceeds that of its total army power to reflect the importance of maritime strength to Egypt. The Judeans have a huge number of unique events, rules and decisions based on their faith based nation and their capital is incredibly difficult to siege out due to the historically accurate network of underground tunnels that existed beneath it allowing the storage of vast quantities of supplies. In addition unique troops exist for most nations as well as provincial units only being available in particular areas of the map (so no superior Cretan archers popping up in Germany !) These are just a couple of examples but the difference in play styles between nations is one of the games's defining features alongside the decadence mechanic.
