i really am amazed at how well they put together this presentation, even if you don't know anything about engineering the music and animation of all of this really walks you through the fear and worry that the team had when they where experiencing this themselves, this really was a fantastic presentation. this inspires me to strive for better animations when i work.

Just incredible. Not just the fact that we had the technology and will to engineer, plan and execute this mission ... but the fact that it WORKED! If any one link in the chain broke the mission would have failed .... and we're talking about a really, really long chain here. Confidence is what I'm left with. Confidence that if we can do this, and things like this, we can accomplish all of the things we imagine in Science Fiction movies today.

German Rakitjanski That's actually quite easy. You can change the latitude of your landing site by adjusting your inclination (remember that inclination changess are most efficient when made 90 degrees from your destination) then fire retrograde until you start falling towards the planetoid. If you're falling towards a body with an atmosphere this next part may require some trial and error, but depending on your angle of attack, you will fall either in front or behind your goal depending on how much the atmosphere slows you down. Otherwise you can just wait until you're over the desired spot, kill your horizontal velocity as you pass over, and then gently apply vertical thrust until you touch down. Eve's atmosphere is quite thick, so you may be able to kill your horizontal velocity from orbit, making the descent rather straightforward, but don't hold me to that.
@Altan0x
@Altan0x 8 лет назад
***** Thank you for your comment, well taking atmosphere into account is the hardest part for me, its just i want to land near border of bioms, but tiny miscalculation on EDL lands you...well not where i wanted it to land =)

You could have left out the "zero margin for error" and opted instead for zero hyperbole. Of course there is margin for error. The planet's atmosphere is a massive chaotic system. There are always tolerances for dealing with unpredictable, chaotic systems. Of COURSE there was margin for error. Perhaps a very narrow envelope for successful entry, descent, and landing, but certainly some margin for error. And the video would have been every bit as cool and impressive without that irritating little piece of hyperbole. You are not the History Channel. Leave that garbage to them.

I totally agree, I was just trying to help understanding by mimicking the other person's style. I realize that it is in fact thanks to the people who decided they to wanted reach something and were not discouraged by others who said "it's impossible". Without such people, we would be still sitting on a tree. We also need the more sedate people, though, at least the thinking ones, who can provide a reality check from time to time.
