I used to scoop low mids excessively and also boost way too much top end. I ended up with mixes where you could hear everything very clearly but it all sounded thin and harsh. As I've advanced, my mixes are getting warmer and darker. It's a balance, however. Now I sometimes find that I've gone too far in the opposite direction.

@@OlympusOdysseus basically, when u turn down the volume of ur interface, and listen to what the compression is doing when adjusting the attack and release times, it is SO easy to hear what the fuck is going on...

This is more a tip for producers/electronic music artists (but could be very handy in the mix as well), and tieing perfectly into what you say about using de-essing on vocal or other harmonic exciters. When using aggressive distortion/saturation on bass or synth lines, you can also use a de-esser on these to tame the harsh area of the added distortion/saturation just in the same way you would use it for vocal saturation, and it works REALLY well, giving super buttery smooth top end, on an otherwise gnarly distorted synth/bass, without loosing any of that low-mid or low end crunchy growl. You will probably have to tune the de-esser a bit differently than for vocals, so it helps if you use a de-esser where you can change the band at which it is applying de-essing (harshness is often around 7k for distorted synths, but not always).

So you said your (ALL) regions are gain staged to -6db as the channel strip responds well to that signal level, should i assume you then trim to taste? (my thought process behind this is that trims are output and in most cases are independent of the input. So when you trim the signal it would still retain any color or mojo gained from the input stage) I've never really thought of it like that with channel strips but i do it with tape emulations linking the record level and the playback level then trimming to taste. I'm gunna try this today.

That tip about hitting the SSL channel strip with the right amount of Peak level is Golden! I wish I known that when I was starting out 🥲 I watched a Tom Lord Alge tutorial and I think he said the same for his SSL G Console. It seems that -6 is the sweet spot for SSL style plugins especially for drums. As for me, I use Acustica stuff so I have to go lower at -12 peak level.

Nr. 2, 3 and 7 is so important. You hear fake YT producer/mixers say you always have to remove all the low end on everything to give room for the bass. No, that's not how great records sounds like. They sounds full in the low mid, there's where the energy is. Same with the drums, they should have impact, they should sound solid. You get that from the low frequencies. I hate that harsh vocal saturation everyone started to use after Drake. It sounds so harsh. I get it if you have a dense beat and you need those upper frequencies to make the vocal pop, but I'll hear it on lots of beats where there's lots of space for the vocal. You never hear it on older records though

I like to cut mid lows on a lot of instruments cause many do sound muddy there. But then i will have lofi instruments that have focus in the low mid range and they fill up the space perfectly for a full and powerful mix

From my limited experience, it's definitely situational. Sometimes, I will cut what is necessary there, and then if I find the entire song is lacking the low mids, then I'll boost it in the master. Take that with a grain of salt though, as I'm still learning. If anyone has objections to that, please speak up because I'd like to learn where I can improve, in the groove, dude. Salud!

@@nacnudselrahc420 The issue ur running into, when adding those frequencies on the master, is that ur adding them to every instrument. Which will cause resonances and many other issues . The best way is to make sure that only the right instruments where cut down there. It’s great to boost things on the master - just to see what the mix is lacking, then going into the mix and fix it. @@nacnudselrahc420 What V8 said, plus: Try not to make too many timbre/eq decisions in solo. Often times those tones that sound horrible in solo are what give something its niche in the mix.

Hi my audio interface records at 48Khz but i have only 44.1khz intrumentals, should i record my vocals at 44.1khz too? Or should i upsample the instrumentals to 48khz? And if i upsampled them it would change the sound and make it faster or something?

Yes, record at 44.1 khz the vocals and then just ginish everything at 44.1khz

For tip 5, are you saying that you will process your individual channel a certain way, and then you'll make any changes a client asks for on a parallel track?

No I will process from the get go on an individual track (More for heavy based processing / fx)

Why do you hit your analog emulations at -6? 0vu equals -18 not -6 so why don't you hit them at 0vu? If I hit my analog chain at -6 they would distort, so how did you come to this conclusion?

Plugin-doctor and set-up my SSL channel strips in there and figured at the HOTTEST when a signal peaks at -6dBFS it's introducing as much harmonics and sharing the dynamics as far as I'd like it to!

@@panorama_mastering ok makes sense. I use Console 1 so you can just turn up the drive until it saturates a certain way. Would the THD knob on the bx SSL4000E do the same thing?

Instead of using aggressive deessing to balance out the saturation on vocals, just manually deess for a much better result.
