Agree with my picks for board game shelf mainstays? Which games are never leaving your collection and why? Let me know!
@edmundschubert4963

I find this kind of video more valuable than Top 10 lists. They both have their place, but “Never Leaving My Collection” carries for me more weight as an assessment.
@AllYouCanBoard

It's definitely a different criteria too. Some of these aren't my favourite games but there are good reasons for them not to leave regardless.

I always love hearing your reasons for things, whether it be the Get From Game A to Game B videos, the collection roasts, or these videos. I was happy to see The Crew MDS and Stellar on here. I just recently picked them up so now I’m even more excited to get them to the table! 😁 And you might have tipped me over the edge to snag Wingspan… That was a great explanation. 💯🔥

Totally agree with Patchwork. Simple, quick, fun game that is all about the tile laying mechanic and doesn’t have other jumbled mechanics like other games.

The days of not having a version of Patchwork in my collection are drawing to an end. A couple of games that have permaspots in my collection are Too Many Bones and Kanban EV. Both represent a level of quality in both design and component quality that equate to "an experience" whenever they hit the table! 🤙✌️

I'm glad Patchwork came out with different editions! I always wanted to play, but I hated the original artwork enough that it was a deal breaker for me. The first time I saw the Americana edition at the store I snatched it up, and it's been a household favorite ever since. I don't think I'll ever consider getting rid of that one.

Thanks for going through Pictures!! I honestly struggle to find a language-independent “party-esque” game to play with my family members, since they don’t speak English fluently and a lot of party games are word-based.

Great video, love the content. If these games are here to stay in your collection then how do you get rid of the games that don’t make the cut? I am curious to know what avenues you use to sell, trade or give away. I haven’t seen many videos like that and maybe it’s time for someone to make an informational video on where to go for second hand games. Thank you and take care.

Wingspan, Patchwork, and Castles of Burgundy definitely make my list too. I like Stellar but need to play it more to find out if it's earning a permanent spot on the shelf. I adore Quest for El Dorado, but my husband doesn't, so there's a chance it could leave our collection someday. 7 other games I'd include are Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, Concordia, Mystic Vale, Quacks of Quedlinberg, Roam, and Seikatsu.

Interesting opinion on the crew. I am holding on to both as I think the original game is easier to teach to trick-taking novices but I would always play deep sea with experienced card players.
@AllYouCanBoard

Totally fair. I don't think I'll have much added difficulty introducing Mission Deep Sea to people over the original, but it definitely does add some complexity so that's a completely valid reason to keep both!

Great list! Can't disagree with your reasons for any. Best I can say is that I'm considering if Isle of Cats Explore and Draw is perhaps a better spot to Patchwork. Yah, it doesn't have that tension of 2 player competive picks - but on the flip side it gives a much wider set of player counts. Another alternative may be Rolling Realms for similar reasons. Alex with BGC had said he had gotten the BGG Geekup tile bag for the Crew to use with Deep Sea so he could have both in the same box. I loved the idea and recently played it. I like having the more basic tiles available to teach and even used them in a hybrid mode with the Deep Sea cards which was fun. We've gotten a lot of favorite games lately that make it tough to narrow down what if not want to ever get rid of. Castles of Burgundy is one (except to upgrade). Marvel Champions I feel has an evergreen spot now. Anachrony is a recent favorite I expect won't leave. Too Many Bones and Spirit Island. Crokinole.
@AllYouCanBoard
@AllYouCanBoard 2 года назад
Ooo I'm intrigued to try Isle of Cats Explore and Draw and see what I think of it!
@DumahAtreides
@DumahAtreides 2 года назад
@@AllYouCanBoard At first I thought the family variant of normal Isle of Cats was enough. The difference that got me to choose Explore as the better intro was size and player count. It's a very small box making it that easy to bring out game on various tables without being intimidating to new gamers. Because it plays the same length with no downtime no matter the player count makes it work to showcase how roll and writes can do five or six player games in a way few others can. Cartographers does have that bit of interaction this doesn't, but I like the polyomino puzzle more in Isle of Cats - but that's absolutely something where your mileage will vary.
@jrobinson5053
@jrobinson5053 2 года назад
Great list. I agree with everything but Wingspan. Lonely game. To me it represents the most popular decline in player interaction, like players playing basketball against each other on separate courts. Also, it has too many cards that open it up too much for good strategy. COB is lonely too though. The Crew is a great example of why friends play games together. Highly interactive. Would never get rid of it. Really want to play Pictures.
@AllYouCanBoard
@AllYouCanBoard 2 года назад
I would definitely agree that Wingspan isn't a perfect game by any means and isn't for everyone. But it's definitely one that gets to the table more than I expect because of people being interested in it or already having played it previously and enjoying it.

Wingspan vs Everdell - i have to say people who I’ve introduced these 2 games lean towards Wingspan. I teach my niece all the time new games and she preferred Wingspan over Everdell. I think the hardest thing with Everdell is really knowing your cards and what cards combo together which i find it’s harder to grasps for newer players to introduce these games. But I believe once you’ve played these two a lot longer you would enjoy Everdell a little more in terms of having built a big engine end game and being able to do more things than Wingspan when you have lesser turns towards the end. Having said that, they will not leave my collection 😀 I like them both.
@AllYouCanBoard
@AllYouCanBoard 2 года назад
Great insights, I'm inclined to agree. I think over time, Everdell edges out Wingspan for me. But the approachability of Wingspan and the amount of requests I get to play it, just gave it the slight edge in this theoretical case.
@boardthenplay8878
@boardthenplay8878 2 года назад
@@AllYouCanBoard I agree. Wingspan does have that ease of approachability and that’s what edges out between the two.

Spoilers below! . . . . THE CREW: I wish I could understand the hype with this game. Everyone heralds it as a revolution in gaming or something, and I think it’s just fine. Ah well, glad it makes people happy! STELLAR: Haven’t played it, but I have its sister game SUBASTRAL. I’m big fan of Riddle and Pinchback: it’s amazing how they can make such a simple game so thinky and unique. The only person in my game group who agrees with me is someone who doesn’t come by often, so I don’t get to play their games often. PATCHWORK: I’m not generally a polyomino fan, but one is better than most. I agree that it always seems to be enjoyable for new gamers. THE CASTLES OF BURGUNDY: I just played this for the first time this year (never played a Stefan Feld game before it, then played this and Notre Dame in two weeks!). Sorry to say that I think it’s a pretty ugly game, but I do really like it! I want to play it more. PICTURES: I’ve seen this in stores but never played it! I’ll have to give it a try! THE QUEST FOR EL DORADO: This one goes up and down for me. I agree that it’s approachable and interesting for most everyone. Selfishly, though, I don’t often feel like playing it. When I go through the gameplay, it’s often not as exciting as other options. I do like it, though. WINGSPAN: An excellent game! This is the opposite of the last pick: I love it, my friends don’t. I agree that it’s not an easy game but the theme is approachable and it does show non-gamers what games can be! I don’t like EVERDELL … the asymmetry of it gave me an extremely bad experience on my second play (I and my friend ended so we left the game shop to get burgers for 20 minutes, and when we came back, the other players were still min-maxing and comboing long after the two of us cared anymore.) I’ll try to give it another chance some day! As for me, I try to keep my collection small, because before the pandemic I moved a lot. But here goes: DOMINION: A no-brainer for me, as it was the game that hooked me into gaming. I kept Dominion even in times of my life when my friends didn’t like it. It would cost so much to replace, anyway, the expansions I have, and I love my custom storage solution. STICK ‘EM: Generally I don’t like trick-taking games and I don’t like vicious games, so I have no idea why I like this game. Maybe it’s because it’s more of a puzzle than most trick-taking games to me. Anyway, it’s a small-box game that’s always been a hit. WINGSPAN: All the things. 😉 COLORETTO: I’m only saying this because I seem to keep holding onto it! It doesn’t come out often, but maybe it should. Another small-box card game, but this was the first game I ever bought back in 2010. The box is held together with clear tape (rather well, if I do say so myself)! I don’t like the 2-player variant of the game, but for 3-5 players the game is a great, easy-to-understand filler! And for a while I was top 200 in the world on BGA (not anymore, clearly!). WILD SPACE: This one is on the list because it’s hard to find. It’s the purest engine builder I’ve ever played, and the anthropomorphic animal aliens are a nice thematic touch, but really it’s the addictive action combos that make the game so exciting! GANZ SCHÖN CLEVER: Such a small box for such combo joy! My most played game of the last three years! YOKOHAMA: Anyone who knows me knows how much I adore this game, and with TMG’s bankruptcy throwing the publishing rights up in the air, I’ll hold onto it, thank you!

Still can't play CoB because of how ugly it is. Want to learn using BGA to at least try it out. The player count range is also a problem for my group which is usually 5 or 6. Wingspan is dead because my wife first played at 5 players with 3 other experienced players, so I have been banned from buying it at any point.
