After almost a decade of being a digital nomad having worked in 15 different countries while rarely spending more than a few months in one location during that time period. It’s safe to say I know what works well and what doesn’t. And if I could start this journey again, here are 3 work life balance rules I would break and what I would do differently. 1. Working Monday-Friday When you’re often changing environments and time zones, your energy levels will fluctuate hugely and sometimes the weekends can be the best time to settle down and get bang out some great work. 2. Working a set amount of hours a day In many countries access to a productive environment and conductive work space isn’t always a given. It can be much more enjoyable to work in chunks based off of your plans throughout the week vs on an arbitrary time scale. 3. Prioritising your work over happiness. I hear so many digital nomads talking about discipline and sustaining a stable income so you can be a full time digital nomads and then so many of them end up burning out. Why? Because travelling requires an immense amount of energy and it’s not a sustainable way to live if you have a demanding full time job. You’re always going to have to compromise on something. Life is too short to waste it. It’s so important to ask yourself whether what you are doing aligns with what your heart really wants. And if it doesn’t. Change it no matter how hard that might be. My goal for the next 12 months is to work as little as possible and allow more space for spontaneity which is the polar opposite of how I’ve existed for the last 28 years. Does this mean I’m not going to work hard. Absolutely not. I give everything to my clients and the projects I am a part of but I also treasure my free time.
