We have feral chickens roaming our property, and they decimated our black eye pea crop. They stripped the peas open while they were still on the plant and ate every pea they could find. They also dug up an ate the potatoes that were growing close to the surface of the garden bed and ate the avocado pears straight off the tree. Rather than dying, they have increased their numbers and I quake in fear to see what will happen this year.
I think you meant to say that tomato leaves/plants are not good for hens, BUT ripe tomatoes are perfectly fine - actually they are great! I have been feeding my hens excess ripe tomatoes for a decade - they go absolutely nuts for them 😊
LOVE the mildly chaotic vibe of this video 😂 This is all so good to know, thank you for the info! Let me know if you'd like a little Gucci illustration to honor her 🤍
I raise chickens for more than a year and i observe them. They are pretty smart in my observations. They actually know what to eat and what not. All in your list, my chickens avoid. We dont give them enough credit
@@chrisz.9974 Agree. They take a little bite of something they are not instintly know. They are definitely drawn to red and ripen fruit for sure. They totally avoid avocado pit, onion and garlic and raw root veggie.
This little family of ours are sending you much many hugs and support Kevin. When our daughter 'Larkin' was watching this with me she started to cry. She said (she is 10) 'I wish I could give my Uncle Kevin a big hug and tell him it's is ok to feel sad and miss Gucci'. Then she & I started to cry. We will be honoring Gucci in our 'Blessings' tonight and please know our hearts are with you at this very sad time. RIP Sweet Gucci. OX
I feed my hens raw garlic and make garlic water for them all the time and they are totally fine. Garlic is a natural dewormer and helps their poop to not stink. 👍🏼
I think the bigger issue with the garlic is it changes the egg flavour. But if you lime garlicky eggs then why not? (Might not taste great in cookies tho lol)
@@klashmar13 I've been giving 7-10 fresh, raw, minced garlic cloves to 7 hens each month for several days in a row for over 3 years and I have never tasted a hint of garlic in their eggs. 🤷♀️
@@dawnybaby5200 Oh interesting. Every once in a while fresh garlic or onions would get thrown to our chickens and you could taste it! It probably totally just depends on the flock.
Ive never heard about legumes being harmful! Good to know. That does make me curious because I swear a lot of chicken feed mixes and recipes include dried peas and lentils? I wonder if specific varieties of legumes are okay?
@@Hannah.-_-. thank you, I figured as much because I do see some dried legumes used in feed. But Kevin said you don’t want to give them “any sort of dried legumes” so I was curious if they have more specific information about it.
Kevin thanks so much for this information, I just didn’t know what not to feed! What happened to Gucci? She was so much pleasure to watch. On another topic which of your channels has the interview with with the farmer of the future. His farm is delightful in the hills and valleys. That video is very good! Thanks!
Your chickens are so polite for the grubby's... mine are like crackheads needing a fix for them, seriously they tackle me every morning for them, I had to up my subscription bucket to once a month 🤣
Oh no now I’m worried, I’ve been feeding my chickens tomatoes from my garden, they absolutely LOVE them. I could’ve sworn they were safe especially since my grandma always fed it to her chickens 😢
If its not broke don't fix it Alot of times people say something is bad just because the read it online without any actual testing for example I know many people that feed their chickens cannabis and it's very healthy especially if it's seeded it's very high in protein and nutrients I think the rash he's talking about if from pesticide not cannabis but Alot of people won't even admit they sprayed their plant because people won't want to buy it
@@Caelamon at the end of the segment he literally says "why feed your chickens [potatoes, tomatoes, or eggplants] just compost them". Hence my worry, I have the captions on, I KNOW what he says. It's not my lack of understanding thank you
Thanks for sharing!! I keep learning more and more about my girls from watching you all talk about the girls - thank you so much for the information!!!
One thing I’ve observed in my own chickens is they seem to ignore things that aren’t great for them. I get onions that have gone a little south from a cafeteria at my college and the chickens never touch them. Same with orange peels. Not interested at all. I also free range my flock in the backyard, so it could be due in part to such liberal access to other food sources. If there’s nothing else for them to eat, maybe they’d try? I don’t know. Always better safe than sorry but I don’t sweat tossing orange peels in the chicken composting system.
My chicken yard is filled with wild onions and silver leaf nightshade. I pull them up but there's just no way to get ahead of them. I hate to resort to herbicide. I think two of my chickens poisoned themselves on the nightshade.
Siri always popping off when she's least wanted! 😂 I don't have chickens (it's a dream to have them one day), but I watch all your chicken content as I love how chaos they are when you bring out the snacks. RIP Gucci!!
I toss a lot of my garden scraps in my chicken run for the girls to browse-in the past that has probably included drying/withering pea plants and old bean plants (though I try to harvest any old pods.) should I avoid letting them have the plants as well, or just the beans?
Yeah our chooks love chocolate cake more than life itself and don't mind digging into avocado. They have been eating raw tomatoes for years and love em! You're dreaming man
There are a few companies that sell scratching feed that has split lentles in. And they always link to it being okay because of a study about boiler chickens. I have a huge bag of the stuff so not sure what to do with it
in my inexperienced opinion i would say if you have been feeding it to your chickens already and have not had any issues then keep doing it in moderation and keep an eye on the chickens for any health changes
I agree with most of this, but you should include some ways that some of these things are actually beneficial to chickens. Things like a tea made from garlic and a spray bottle filled with a combination of lemon juice and water. If you're unaware of what these things do, do your research. Another thing you can add to this video is anything dried, like rice and grits. Not because they're poisonous, but because they will absorb water after they've been ingested.
Yes they can! They don't have capsaicin taste receptors, so they cannot feel the heat (or pain) of chillies. They are really good for them too. I feed all my 'too hot' peppers to my chickens :)
I gave mine gochugaru (Korean chili flakes) that was a month from expiration. Their egg yolks turned a beautiful red-orange. That’s my new egg selling trick, greens and peppers.
I hope people aren’t feeding chickens bud haha but the leaves are very nutritious and edible for humans and dogs, can’t say for chickens though. My dog likes to take a bite out of fresh leaves and I’ve tried them a few times. I hope people are just giving there chickens the leaves they prune as it’s often done to avoid powdery mildew.
Can't say that I've ever known a chicken to eat anything that harms them. Whether they can taste it or genetic memory I haven't a clue? Just as I've seen many times over when young birds meet my beehives for the first time they instantly turn away. Any type of bee or wasp actually. Being the insectivores they are that has to be bred into them. I imagine much of what they eat is the same.
So sad to hear about Gucci. May she Rest In Peace. Do chickens cross over the rainbow bridge or do they have a different method of getting into heaven? The golden coop? hmmm....
So when you say cannabis has a broad spectrum cuz there's multiple parts of the plant as with most plants. More than likely people that give cannabis to their chickens, they're giving the fan leaves, and more than likely they're giving them the family use when the plant is in the veg stage, so no trichomes are developed, tricomes are the sticky residue glands on the buds of the cannabis, the trichomes are like the cannabinoid factory and storage part of the plant then which it's combusted , So when you feel the effects of it. Even if you had fully matured cannabis flowers or buds, if you were to eat them, you're not going to get stoned, You're going to probably just have a stomach ache. The combustion is what causes the chemical change to allow the enhancement of the effect of the cannabis once smoked otherwise it's unaffective.
