My favorite one is in Nier: Automata where you eat a fish which is completely incompatible with your android systems and you just die. Or where you remove your OS. That game has a lot of these, actually.

What comes to my mind, is the first Tomb Raider. In TR1 you can jump into King Midas Hand, which turns everything it touches into gold. Well curiosity killed the Croft... poor Lara.

When you go to space in Super Paper Mario, you can refuse to put on your space helmet multiple times. Meanwhile, your partner Tippi gets increasingly frustrated with you for being an idiot.

Two HUGE contenders for “most easily avoidable deaths”! 1. Disco Elysium: you play a detective who, during an interrogation, borrows your partner’s gun despite his reservations. Against his constant urging, every step you take brings you closer and closer to putting the gun in your mouth and blowing your own brains out, resulting in a “game over” newspaper headline about a mad detective who killed himself during an interrogation 2. Outer worlds: if you play a low intelligence run, you can fly your ship containing specimens needed to perserve the human race straight onto the sun - with you too on that ship - while the NPC’s plead with you to reconsider before you take your final heroic journey. Please include those in a commenter recommended video!

The thousand-year door entry reminded me of a similar segment in the sequel, Super Paper Mario where, after getting teleported into the ever-expansive vacuum of space, you're asked if you want a helmet. If you say no each time the game insists you put it on, you suffocate and the game calls you stupid.

Elder Scrolls 3, Morrowind. You find a man who falls from the sky, dying on impact. He has some Scrolls of Icarian Flight on him that boost your Acrobatics to an absurd degree. They can be used. If you say you never used them just to see what happens, I call you a liar.

The Ghost Trick moment, done by many people as more of a desperation move than “you know this is gonna hurt” moment, is one of my funniest moments ever in gaming. Extreme Brownie Points for finding a way to reference it Andy!!!

The "T" ending in Nier: Automata is irresistible. Did I know what removing my own OS chip would do? I suspected. Did I do it anyway? Of course I did. 2-for-1 special: the "K" ending is equally predictable, and equally has to be done. That mackerel had to be eaten.

Imagine spending billions of credits to resurrect Shepard, only to be informed that he died cus he couldn't resist sticking it in crazy. Poor TIM. 😂

In “The Neverhood” you play as a literal clay figure. Nothing can harm you, wether it’s tnt or loss of head. You can, however, fall off the planet when you drain a lake and jump down the drain. There’s even signs telling you that you will die.

One of my favorites of this type is Cyan's Obduction, where the entire game you're warned about something called a Mofang Device and told not to approach it under any circumstances. Near the end of the game, you finally come across one. Taking the idiot bait and approaching it causes it to detonate violently, ruining everything and netting you an achievement for poor listening skills.

Super Paper Mario: "will you save the universe?" -Nah "oh that's too bad" *the bad guy wins. Game over*

Here's a few more: *Midas' Hand in Tomb Raider 1* In Tomb Raider 1's Palace Midas level, you find a destroyed statue of King Midas in the back of a small garden. Climbing onto the statue's hand does what you wouldn't be expecting in a game whose traps are either sci fi or grounded in reality like Tomb Raider (unless you assume the hand uses nanites) and kills you with the king's golden touch curse; you turn to gold within 10 seconds before falling over. *Firing the eclipse cannon yourself in System Shock* In system shock 1, SHODAN is planning at the start to fire a tachyon laser at earth to glass major cities before infecting the survivors with a mutagen virus. You're supposed to take a roundabout route to power up the space colony's shields then fire the cannon into the shield to destroy it. However, you can very much fire the cannon too early (such as just pushing buttons willy nilly) which results in you glassing half the planet yourself. SHODAN is legitimately happy with you for doing this and tells you just before cutting to the main menu to wait a minute so a boss cyborg can collect you for the celebration, sounding very much like GLaDOS's party escort line in Portal. *Accidentally crushing yourself in Mother 3* In Mother 3, there's a part where Duster needs to break through some floors in Osohe Castle by ramming a statue so the heavy metal ball on it falls off. However if you ram it on the wrong side, the ball falls on top of you, crushing you to death. *Screwing over your friends for infinite wealth in Rayman 2* In Rayman 2, you need to get a potion to cure one of your buddies' sickness from the Cave of Bad Dreams in the marsh. After navigating pits of rotting corpses & thorny vines then getting chased by and battling Mike from Monsters Inc crossed with a cacodemon, you get the choice of the potion or all the gold you could ever want and need. Take the latter choice and Rayman decides not to save the world but instead chill out atop a hill of gold doubloons on a paradise island. Thankfully it resets to the choice so you aren't forced to start over. *Crashing a flying carpet in Prince of Persia 2* In the notoriously hard Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow & The Flame for DOS, Macintosh & Xbox Classic, you have to open a grate in the ceiling above the Skull Caves' treasure room, then sit on a magic carpet to be taken to the lost soul from Doom infested Ruined City. However, crouching on the carpet is what triggers the flying animation, even when you crouch involuntarily after landing from a jump so if you accidentally do so before opening the trapdoor grille, the prince flies straight into it and becomes a red smear on the ceiling with a cartoonish *splat!* In the same game, you can also kill yourself by dancing: you need to mash left/right alternately to turn into the dark prince from the first game, which is required for the final boss. However, you need maximum total health from life extending potions or it won't work, and using the dark prince command takes your health away. *Attacking the Empress in A Hat in Time* In the Nyakuza Metro DLC of the best Mario game ever made, Hat Girl gets conscripted by a sphynx cat anthropomorph who is the local yakuza kumiko called the Empress, to bring her the time pieces you've been collecting so she can either sell them from her jewellery store or use them to barter shadier stuff in an upcoming deal. Throughout the game, you're used to allied or otherwise invincible NPCs making a squeeze toy sound when you hit them. Try this to the Empress in her shop in the metro and she fights back, killing you in 1 hit no matter how far or quickly you try to run away. Not even the time slow hat saves you. *Killing Captain Keyes in Halo 1* Back on Classic Xbox, once you met Captain Keyes on the pillar of Autumn in Halo 1, you'd need to leave the bridge so as to equip the pistol he gives you. It's entirely possible to head back once you have it drawn and cap the captain or any other bridge crew with his own gun, and why wouldn't you after the escort mission later? Doing so causes Cortana to lock the doors and send invincible marines to come and kill you, warning them you've gone rampant. (A holdover from when Halo was Marathon 4 in a scrapped alpha story) You can hide down a nearby ladder, but you must at least reload eventually.

The Neverhood: There’s only one place you can die, and it’s clearly signposted. Everyone jumps in the hole at least once though.

In the old Sierra game "Torin's Passage" in the final encounter with the Sorceress you're sneaking around and balanced on a ledge over "lava" and only have two items: A magic spell book that swaps the places of you and the other person and A bagpipe. If you try the bagpipe the narrator actually comments on what a bad choice that was

Love the old Sierra adventure games. They were so ridiculously unfair and my child brain could never work out what to do, but they were amazing and I feel such a pang of nostalgia every time I see them.

In Hitman 2 there's a challenge for using the killswitch on the Constant. Which is made even worse, because after you've killed both the Washingtons you can't save anymore apparently.

In the original version of Space Quest, pressing the wrong button would actually take you to the castle in King's Quest, not Nottingham Castle.

In The Neverhood, the only way to die is to walk into a hole. There are signs that say "Danger!", "Don't jump in the drain!", and "You will die!". If you still walk forward, Klaymen falls off the planet, and you get the only "The End" screen.

The Outer Worlds had a literal stupid game over. When you’re on the Hope you can choose to fly the ship yourself which ends with you flying it into the sun.

My stupidest game over was listening to GlaDOS in Portal 2. Even got an achievement out of it as a permanent reminder.

There's an interesting game over from Corpse Party where you need to read notes from a dead victim, if you find and read all the notes your character will get possessed and game over. It's really hard to resist the temptations of wanting to know what happened next to the victim.

Not really a game over, but during the Isle of Sgail level in Hitman you can fail by detonating the Constant's killswitch, and they clearly knew we wouldn't be able to resist because it's one of the challenges for the level. NieR Automata has plenty of ways to get stupid game overs. For example, eating a sardine. Or, the best one, unplugging your OS chip despite the games warnings

Found one of these recently in Knights Of The Old Republic. Part of the main quest on Manaan has you being arrested and charging with disrupting the peace, punishable by death. Of course your arbiter tries to defend you, but you can interrupt him and just blurt out that you're guilty, even telling them it was a lot of fun, after which you are quickly executed. Truly taking the mission to save the galaxy seriously.

Fallout New Vegas Dead Money gave a bulk discount on these: reading Sinclair's personal journals in the vault despite (potentially) seeing multiple direct warnings on what will happen OR telling Elijah you refuse to work "for" him despite the bomb collar around your throat OR siding with Elijah at the very end after he makes his goals...fairly clear.

There was a Monkey Island game with a great Game Over screen. The game warns you about a cliff you could fall off of, and if you walk up to it you indeed fall off. Then the Restart Restore Quit box comes up that Sierra Games used at the time. Of course, you end up bouncing back up because you landed on a rubber tree, and it jokes about how you'd be dead if it was a different game.

You know how in Spider-Man PS4 and Miles Morales : Spider-Man there's trains ? And you know that in real life, walking in front of a moving train kills you ? But what if you, a super hero, tried to hop on the moving train ? Well, it kills you too. A shocker, I know

I always found the alternate Game Over in the first Golden Sun to be pretty dumb but hilarious too. You are asked by the Wise One if you want to take on the journey, If you say no the game ends but its funny to me what that means cuz Issac's party is literally always just behind the bad guys every time. The Mercury Lighthouse is lit before you get to the top, the Venus Lighthouse is lit after an intrusive battle with Issac and his team, and you as Felix see to the Jupiter Lighthouse's lighting but each lighthouse must be lit with a Elemental Star and Issac holds the Mars Star which means the game(and thus the world) literally ends cuz 2 young boys said"Nuhhuhhh" to a grand adventure and literally just bogard the Mars Star the whole time and no one thought to return and grab the dang thing :P
