Massive thank you to everyone for checking out the video. I went back and forward on making it - whether it was "too negative" or not - but VERY reassuring to know it's not just me noticing these things, and wanting to talk about them. Cheers! - Scott

never have doubts Scott, pretty much the entire gaming community is lamenting the lack of inspiration, remakes after remakes. Glitch and bug ridden games upon release. Franchises that are turning stale. Potentially good games ruined by microtransactions fuelled by a younger generation or by a couple dozen of "whales" that bring more revenue than 1000s of gamers would ever bring..

I agree with the majority of what you say all I can disagree with is I had a day 1 xbox one until recently and the load times drive me insane. I only have a little te to play. When 15 to 20% is loading then I am better of just watching tv or a movie or whatever. I was playing warframe with a friend and he had an issue with his Xbox one and had to reset it then reload the game. It almost took him 5 minutes to get back into my party and game. The SSD is incredible. That alone is worth the money for a new console

This is why gate keeping is a good thing. Too many casual normies starting to get into gaming and are a very loud bunch. Companies are starting to pander to people who spend more time being offended by games then actually playing them, these losers are ruining it for everyone. But money talks so eventually these companies will realise the stupidity of their decisions.

But it's a rare case any more. I played Halo Infiinite on Game Pass, refuse to buy it, barely played the poor multiplayer. I wish developers would realize that forced DRM and Internet connectivity for games is a step backward. Look at the debacles GT7 and SimCity have endured; what's the point of paying a full $70 for the game if there is no guarantee you can play it at your leisure, especially if this ridiculous requirement is in place for SINGLE-PLAYER modes? In my opinion, at that point, you can't help but wonder if spending time with the game is either fun or just another full time job. This is not why people play games.
@residentevilclone

I buy physical games and regularly don’t play them for a while. Having just moved to a place where I don’t have internet yet, I now understand how frustrating these restrictions are. I can install a game but can’t play it because it requires a patch, or even the second half of the game needing to download because it isn’t even on the fucking disc. I have an entire library of games and movies on my hard drives that I don’t have access to because the console can’t verify the digital licenses. Absolute garbage.

100% agree. What really grinds my gears is having to sign up to some service when you want to play a single player game. I don't want a Bethesda/EA/UbiSoft/Blizzard/2k/etc. account, I just want to play my game that I purchased with my own hard earned cash. Why do I have to sign up for these accounts when I play single player games? EA is one of the worst offenders of this practice, where with some games you can't even get past the start screen until you agree to sign up for an EA account, or they hold certain content hostage and only allow access to it once you sign up for an account. This is bloody ridiculous!

@@cobalt-snake6125 Exactly this. And the fact you have to agree to an absurd EULA just to play the damn game as well. Gone are the days of simply popping in the disc / cartridge and hitting start. However, I've found a work-around that has worked for some games that "require" an account: Go to settings and turn off the internet. It should then take you straight to the start screen without registering.

Good video. These are the kinds of topics and discussions the gaming industry needs to need to be having now. Publishers, developers, the media, and gamers themselves. Have to throw one in though. For every game with a yearly release, I also have to point out games with decade or more release cycle. How long between GTA 5 and 6? Fallout 4 and 5? Skyrim and Elder Scrolls 6?
@john-doemcalias4759
@john-doemcalias4759 2 года назад
They take that long only because expectations are high. Those IP are the cashcows of their respective developers. If a bad TES or Fallout game dropped then so would Bethesdas credibility along with their investors bottom lines. Have to keep in mind that this is a business and unfortunately most of the money men dont game at all or even understand the industry. They just get an investor document and make arbitrary decisions based entirely on maximizing returns.

@BrokenNoah
@BrokenNoah 2 года назад
@@fgc_roofer_07 No, I get what you are saying, however, the 90s and even most of 00s aren't without faults either. I lived through all of that and while some industry problems are new to this generation, there is always the scummy part. Unoriginality is always there in the industry as it always had a "me too" (I don't mean in the current context) problem. Trend-chasing instead of trend-making. When fighting games was the hottest thing, a lot of the devs and publishers tried half-hearted, shoddy attempts. When MMOs were getting beigger, everyone saw dollar signs and a lot of those projects crashed and burned at the gate. When FPS and open world games became trendy, everyone made their attempt at gray and brown shooters. MOBAs had that short window of this as well. Don't even get me started at all the one-year developed movie or TV show tie-in games that plagued the mid/late 90s to the end of 00s that ends up in the bargain bin as fast as they were released. As far as unfinished games back then, Lands of Lore 3 was a technical mess, even Fallout 2 had it's fair share of game-ending bugs like NPCs not getting out of your way, blocking an exit or an entrance so you better be save-scumming. Things like that just as an example. You can get stuck in a wall in Chrono Trigger if I'm remembering correctly as well. If anything this generation, or even the last few, did get right is making patching games way easier as internet has become ubiquitous. Of course it's a double-edged sword as it has also became a crutch as we are seeing now with day-1 patches and the way some devs and publisher kinda settled into the mindset that they can fix their game later. I guess my point is, corporations aren't your friend today nor were they back then. It's just that the money involved right now and mainstream coverage is a lot greater that a lot of the shady things they are doing now are more apparent (and some like Blizzard's Diablo Immortal or Ubisoft trying to chase the NFT money have dropped any pretenses what they truly are)

The problem is that these days publishers demand games to come out within a few years when in reality a GOOD game takes time and careful planning. Too many games these days are realised as half of a game then updated over time and then given a list of DLCs to make the game more enjoyable and in many cases, more playable. CyberPunk 2077 was in development for a long time but CD Projeckt Red made too many promises and didn't even pay attention to previous generations. The game also was eventually put on a deadline which made them completely ignore all the problems the game had. And once again it was realised as barely a game and then updated over time. What needs to happen is for developers and publishers to be more patient and take more time to further develop, test, and polish their games. And don't give me that "But fans will be demanding the game sooner" crap. Because they don't REALLY have to answer to the fans. Especially when the game the developed properly and had more time to do so on released and it's a true game worth its price tag.

Money is the problem here, mostly. Big companies don't care about quality, just money. I'm so pissed that many of them (EA mostly) have bought out smaller companies just to shut them down. Without those smaller companies that actually care about the player, I don't think the game industry will get better. AAA developers are too stuck up in their old money grabbing ways to change their behavior.

Here's a thing Metroid Dread did so well that other games should learn from. I click the icon... and it's title screen immediately and you can just play. No minutes of splash screens and cutscenes. Just like the days of old where you put the game in and when you hit power it just played. Go back to that experience. I didn't know how much I missed it until Metroid Dread reminded me.

Presentation is huge. Metroid Dread actually has great a great presentation and it definitely did have cutscenes when I started playing the demo. There is nothing wrong with cutscenes when done well and are engaging instead of wasting time. A good splash screen can make you hyped for a game like in Dragon's Dogma or Deus Ex Human Revolution. There have been numerous games that put you right into the gameplay. If all you are doing is playing the most mainstream AAA annual titles, I can see how this would feel new. Even similar games like Ori do the same as Metroid in it puts you right into the game. If you like Metroid Dread and haven't played either Ori, you are in for a treat.

I really thought that Metroid Dread was a great example of how to modernize an old school genre with all the new tech and design advancements invented over the years. The controls were the most refined of any Metroid game to date and it was joy to just move around the world. I really like how they integrated the cutscenes into the game. Just enough exposition to get the point across and you were back to playing.

Scott's articles are always on point, while I may not agree on all of his takes on some games, his critiques of the industry as a whole are always a must-watch. The last entry was the most important IMO, the consumerist culture and cycles of Preorder-Buy-Buy DLC-Buy remaster are getting tiresome and basically just capitalize on the "Fear of missing out". Sadly, money talks and we need to show gaming companies that we want a change.

I think that their biggest issue is that they're worried about all the wrong things and that's because they're trying to appease shareholders instead of consumers. Yeah, shareholders love hearing about all of these features, how big the map is, how good the graphics are, the frames per second, blah, blah, blah. What does the average consumer care about? I'm not talking about the hardcore gamers that are investing 30+ hours a week on "Elden Ring". I'm talking about people like myself, a mid 30's guy playing "It Takes Two" with a daughter or "Little Nightmares". Well, what do the average consumers care about? Is it fun? Can I play couch co-op or competitive? If not, is it interesting for others to watch (like "Little Nightmares")? If the answers to those questions are "No" or "What do you mean by 'fun'?" We are out. Edit: Hell, that's why Nintendo has lasted while other companies have come and gone. Their games may not have the most features, best graphics, etc but they are fun and amusing. Take WWE2K22 and Red Dead Redemption for example. Yeah, WWE has got MyRise, a career mode, MyGM, MyFaction, blah, blah, blah. All of that is mostly ignored so my family and I can smack each other's wrestlers with steel chairs and kendo sticks (or as my older daughter calls them "light sabers"). "Red Dead Redemption"? Yeah, I finished the story but I bought it because my wife was interested in it after seeing the trailer. She didn't care about anything else in it but riding horses around and taking care of them (I'd go to the bathroom and come back to find that my horse had been cleaned, well fed, and had gotten plenty of pats).

Damn dude. I walked in expecting just another list but this was more like a thesis and REALLY well written. I'm entirely blown away. . That said.. everything you listed in 100% ON POINT. One thing that is also at play (possibly to a shrinking degree) is the fact DRM is out the window for most publishers and we can see games hit the storefronts in the state ypu cited only to be shut down 6 months or a year later, completely wiping any purchses in game or pre order goodies from you wallet. THAT risk is discouraging. Add to this the fact games are not really "yours" upon purchase with big publisahers disenchanting long time older gamers and it cuts into sales overall. . There's a reason I 'Watch' new games but 'Play' my back catalogue more these days.
@morgantaylor84
@morgantaylor84 2 года назад
Add to this the fact games are not really yours BS the gaming media is trying to convince the world of to have the benefits of both goods and services products without the responsibilities of either, aka "games as a service" or as I like to call it FRAUD, there's literally no reason to buy new AAA games ever as the gaming industry will decide when you are done with that game not you. A product is either a good or a service, not both. A good is sold one time and is then the property of the purchaser. A service is something that has a monthly subscription fee attached to it that the consumer pays for access. Failure to pay means they can legally cut off the service. In NO WAY can they sell you a good (full blown purchase of the game itself at 60 bucks or your regional equivalent) and then say, at any time down the line, "Yeah, that good you purchased from us was never yours and you can't use it now because we decided you can't." That's like selling someone a bicycle and then two years down the line coming to their house and removing the gears system that makes a bicycle work and telling them "Yeah you never owned it despite paying full price for it." Now this is not to say that games you only can access from services like XBOX Game Pass cannot cut out your access. They can, if you stop paying for the service they're on and that's the ONLY way you have access to the game. But again, that's also assuming that the game will keep functioning during the entire life of it's presence on or as a part of the service. Mark my words, the next step is killing these games years down the line.
@evilkinggumby
@evilkinggumby 2 года назад
@@morgantaylor84 The longer people subscribe to game pass (or similar) and build up a library through it the more invested they are in staying with said platform and continuing to pay for the service... I was thinking about something. And keep in mind I'm speaking in PlayStation for generations, because that's the system I've always worked with... Do you realize, that GTA has not put out a game for the PS4 generation. GTA III, vice City, and San Andreas we're all released on the PlayStation 2. Grand theft Auto four and five were both designed for PlayStation 3... And yes they did make a ridiculous amount of money for all of us that upgraded... But everybody who played the game, expected vice City to come out before PlayStation 5. This is the first time we have not had a single player outing from GTA introduced exclusively for a generation. Considering that GTA is rockstar's flagship series, and that quite frankly the PlayStation 4 is more powerful than anyone gives it credit for, this could have been something that could have completely turned around the whole trilogy release. I have the trilogy, I play the trilogy on PS4 and I really don't have a problem with it, especially since they've been updating it. I mention all that basically just to say this. GTA 6 has got to be a home run, and with the news coming from leakers and Rockstar itself... I am not too hopeful. Essentially, what they've been messing up on, is bad... The trilogy, rdr2 online, but third time pays for all. If 6 underperforms, has a lackluster single player, and online doesn't pull its weight... I believe that the fan base will leave. And I don't want them to do that, I want Rockstar games to justify my 20-year obsession with them. I seriously hope they can.

Triple A companies are so greedy that I'd rather throw my money on indie game devs. Indie games are innovative, supportive of their games, and creative. They will release a game that is complete (maybe a few collision bug, not that big), won't charge you $50 for a bad game, and will personally interact with their community.
@Drstrange3000

For every indie game that innovates, there are hundreds that copy and fail. I don't understand why people think all AAA games are the same and indies can do no wrong. The indies that do well are usually closer to AA level (Sifu, Journey, Stray, It Takes Two, Kena, Ori, Hades, Divinity Original Sin 2, etc.). What we usually get are really janky copycats and games with very poor mechanics and poor production values. We have gotten some creative AAA titles. I am currently playing Death Stranding on GamePass and it is definitely different from most AAA games. Nintendo games are very indie-like in nature. We had games like Dreams, The Last Guardian, Returnal, Half Life Alyx, etc. Most of PlayStation and Nintendo first party exclusives lack excessive bugs and are usually very complete upon release. What would you say about the recent Xenoblade Chronicles 3? Do you even play single player games to be making these kinds of claims?

Some of my biggest pet peeves are console executives on all sides and the attempt to get rid of physical games/dlc and switch to digital. I want to be able to have the game as long as the disc lasts and not have to worry about getting on my system and having the game I bought be removed from the digital store for a variety of reasons. I also don’t like the crap Sony’s trying to pull with the ps5 and trying to move on from the ps4 so quickly There’s still potential with it and not everyone can afford a new console.

It's bad enough when Netflix & the like don't work due to internet issues, I can't imagine the stress of wanting to play a game but being blocked by internet issues. I'm mad about the raised price of the PS5, but considering my backlog of PS4 games & the unlikeliness I will ever get my hands on PS5 any time soon, whatever I guess I get it much later down the line but it'll suck if any game I look forward to is a PS5 exclusive.

Gaming right now feels like it exists in a state of duality: the facade largely represented by the points brought up in this video and then the side usually not in the limelight. The major AAA releases all seem mired by one controversy or another but there's such a wealth of options that you could go the next decade without playing a single Call of Duty, Elder Scrolls, Assassin's Creed, et. al. and still accumulate a backlog big enough to take years to tackle. As someone who grew up playing NES/SNES titles the indie scene as a whole is something I never could have fathomed, but even the AA titles from publishers like S-E and Sega breathe so much life into what has since become a long stagnant industry. Whether another "crash" is on the horizon remains to be seen but I think even if it happens it won't be as devastating as the 1983 one simply because many avenues exist not just for content but distribution.

And a month ago I was watching Civvie 11's review of Singularity, and Mike Gummelt had left a comment about his experience working on the game. I replied and we shared a couple comments back and forth, and he told me that about half of the old guard is still at Raven. So if they are freed, we can probably expect some good things.

I love to play video games when i have free time, when i'm bored. Modern AAA games are hit or miss. Some are hit like Red Dead Redemption 2, God of War 4, Spider-Man PS4 and Resident Evil 2 Remake. But unfortunately, most are miss like Fallout 76, Battlefield 2042, Marvel's Avengers, Anthem and Metal Gear Survive. I think the best way to play good modern games is to look for Indie Games. Or replay the old games from past generations. Hopefully the video game industry will get better in the future.

The theory I've adopted that matches most of the complaints is "the casual player reigns supreme". Todd and everyone in this chatroom are all hardcore gamers who love video games either as art, sport etc. Ever since mobile gaming has proven that you can make hundreds of millions of dollars with little to no effort, gaming companies have shifted over to them. That is how Diablo: Immortal can have a 1star rating but have made millions of dollars. The hardcore gamer is now a 'niche' market and we are not considered the dominant money maker. It makes sense from a business perspective; why would a company spend five years and tens of millions of dollars trying to make a AAA game that could potentially fail when you can release a free to play game that costs nothing to make but will rake in millions. When you start looking at the gaming industry this way and start understanding that as a hardcore gaming you are the minority, the decisions of the gaming industry start making sense.

Being a seasoned gamer, there just isn't anything to excite me anymore. Everything is just a clone of everything else. I still remember the impact that Half Life 2 had at E3, we need another innovation like that...something to raise eyebrows. I have gotten every PS console up through PS4, but the lack of availability and now the fact that they increased the price means that I will not be buying that iteration of the system. I used to be motivated to upgrade my PC because of that "next cool game that I will need a graphics update for", but I can't name one title that would even make me care to do that. As it is, I am basically using Gamepass to play games and save a ton of money. I already have a huge backlog of steam, humble bundle, free games from the Epic gamestore, etc...to play. Not like i'm starving for games. Also, there are just so many things to choose from now, which you would think would be a good thing, but deciding what to play out of all of the things available is in of itself a huge mess that is just a natural progression. Honestly, when we started calling games by genre's (Metroidvania, Souls-like, Rogue-like, bullethell, etc) that kind of killed innovation because developers are just setting out to make games in those fashions. How can you innovate through that?

Everybody rips on Sony for not getting on the "game pass" bandwagon soon enough (even though they did [long before Microsoft], just very poorly executed) but, as an owner of both Sony's and Microsoft's systems, I can say that Sony have always had better deals on their storefront. In Australia, Sony is the new Steam. Sony has a sale every month and many of the most recent and/or most popular games are on sale very often, sometimes up to 70% off. Even with having Game Pass Ultimate, the discounts available on the Microsoft storefront have been minimal in quality, quantity and consistency. From what I have heard from friends of mine that have a Switch, Nintendo are also a bit slim on the discount front. P.S. Steam don't do epic sales like they used to in Australia also.

The problem with gaming is three fold. 1. Too much "future monetization" including DLC (that's sometimes on disc from launch), loot boxes, "micro" transactions and requiring paying for online multiplayer. 2. Companies releasing broken games and making gamers their unpaid beta testers. But the biggest problem with this is... 3. Idiot consumers supporting both of the above things. Stop buying broken crap and allowing yourself to be nickel and dimed and those practices will change.
@iconiastar6192
@iconiastar6192 2 года назад
I totally agree with you. Especially point 2. When I was a child, if a game company launched an incomplete or buggy game people wouldn't buy from that company in the future because they couldn't be trusted. Now, that's what the majority of games are. I tend to wait a few months or years and I know that I'm going to get all of the content at least (I just got 5 games on PS+ all from 2011-2013.) But gamers nowadays are kind of silly. They'll regularly just pay the full price for half a game then pay the full price again in a few weeks for the "DLC" which should have been part of the original release. Look at the Arkham series or Spiderman. Both ended up with DLC that cost more than the original games and they were only a few extra missions. Another thing to add though. The developers don't care what players want or think. They just see the money rolling in from their overhyped titles and forget that a real person paid for it. It's no longer about creating good, original content. It's a race to see who can make the most money by building on an already successful title. Like Assassin's Creed which is currently on it's 13th game in the series. 13 games and most are practically identical in terms of gameplay with a couple branching out into pirates and ignoring the assassin side of the story. I used to pre-order games that I expected would be worth playing. Now I just wait until the bug fixes are released or the DLC comes with the full game.

born in '89 here... another factor is that we got to read and maybe see some pictures about an upcoming game in magazines you had to buy. the actual gameplay was a complete mystery unless the magazine had some demo's or maybe a trailer on a CD. nowadays you could have watched 80% of the epic moments of a game online. -"ohw nice, this was from trailer number 38" Games are less of a surprise when they finally come out. Not saying games where better back than, maybe they where, maybe not... but it felt more like you where playing what the devs wanted you to play, some games are a form of art. Now it feels like you're playing what the executives want you to buy and keep spending money on. Also, developers seem to be less and less free to build what they want in the current political enviroment, and are pretty much bullied into political correct game design. I remember E3 was something to look out for because the magazines would show all the games presented there giving me something to read and to look out for. This year E3 took gaming as an excuse to provide us with a shitload of political correctness bullshit, without any really exciting games presented to us at all. This guy was the largest douche I’ve ever seen, opening packs of players and spending over 1k on them. It’s a part of the madden community/sport community I’ve never been interested in and just the 2 mins of that guy’s video made me nearly rip my tv off the wall and toss it in the trash. Just the most, annoyingly vapid content I’ve ever seen. Jesus.

Great vid, points are spot on, only 4 or 5 years ago, feels like I bought every major release at midnight, and after Cyberpunk, Fallout, No Mans Sky, I’m never buying a day one game again. My gaming and spending habits have completely changed. The gaming biz can’t devolve and expect players to keep up the old pace.

Amen, to that. I will never play day 1. To many bugs, the servers lag because so many people log on at the same exact time. Even if I was given the game for free, I would not play in the first 2 weeks. You MUST wait for the first bug patch and for the new smell to wear off before you can truly play a new game. I am super stoked for Diablo 4. Going to wait until they patch and also see how loot boxes bonuses work. Diablo Immortal is super pay to win.

I havent bought a game on release for the past 6 years now. The gaming industry has changed for a while now, and its only getting worse. I buy 3~4 games per year at most and usually heavily discounted. Quality multiplayer games are a rarity nowadays, CoD and Battlefield lost their way. Quality single player games are still a thing but are often filled with bugs on release so i wait it out and buy GoTY editions usually and often second hand (gotta love disc edition systems). I refuse to fuel bad descions made by money hungry devs or publishers.

As an Xbox owner, this rings true but hollow. The amount of games that miss Xbox for physical releases is frustrating. I get jazzed up over Cherobylite getting a next gen version disc, only to find it's PS5 ONLY? Why did I buy this Series X again?

I wait an average of 3 months for new games. I bought Elden Ring near launch only because I had a ton of Microsoft points and it cost me about 20 dollars, but I stopped buying day one years ago. the people who buy day one are guinea pigs to help the developers know what to fix in the first few patches lol

You´re forgetting an important point. IF you could play "the perfect game" , would you buy the next one after it? No. Because you already have the perfect one. Easy enough, yes? I always asked myself when I was 16-20 years old, why nearly each game besides some excepts for its generation misses characters or specific content? The answer is clear: It´s intended! If the industry developes perfect games with EVERYTHING you want, you wouldn´t buy their next products, so they have to find concepts to keep you interested, but also grow your desire for more and better products. And this is what they actually do. And they MUST do it, because they need money ALL the time.

All the points are spot on. It's really sad actually. This era is the height of gaming and yet it's the worst generation to date. As we can see from long time gamers prefering to stick with older titles. new games are expensive, the game is broken, aggresive microtransactions, everything is open world with nothing to do, and if they're open world games, mostly they're bloated with a bunch of nonsense amount of collectibles to hit that "100 hour" mark. With all the advancement in gaming technology, their quality somehow became worse. A lot of developers seems to lost their passion for video games and just pumping out games for the sake of sales
