Here's 7 reasons to consider attending kayak events. I hope these are helpful for those that are thinking about it but haven't yet. And maybe for paddlers that have only attended events nearby, maybe this will help in seeking out adventures a bit further away.
List of reasons:
- Broad group of instructors, giving us the opportunity to learn from many different people
- On longer events, the opportunity to work on skills from day to day
- Often get the chance to paddle and visit a new place
- Usually events are open to new paddlers and will have suitable classes / outings
- Events are a great way to test out new equipment, find used and new equipment
- Make new paddling friends, and possibly make plans for future events and trips
- Take away homework and skills to work on later on

I find sea kayak symposiums really useful, not only for updating skills but also finding like minded people to have independent adventures with. It's the Anglesey Symposium next week - should be great - always an excellent international event.

Very good video, nice job done! A lot of information and beautiful, funny and interesting images too! Here in South of Brazil I organize a "friends who are paddlers" meeting since 2011 called "Remada de Inverno" (Winter Paddling) because at that time I was the only person at water paddling in winter conditions. It can be cold, it can be windy, it can be rainy and sometimes - with bad luck - all together, but on this particular event weekend, everyone goes out on the water to meet up and have fun. We always camp in a beatiful spot and everyone brings all what we need - camping equipment, food, water, wine... - after all, we are in ocean kayaks with complete autonomy! Here in Brazil, a super big huge country with so many different landscapes and options (rivers, lakes and 8.000 km of atlantic coast) surprisingly we don't have meetings like that you talk about... so, if I need to choose only one word to comment, I would say: "enjoy"!!!

I remember sitting in a swimming pool and figuring out the hand role with a white water kayak. Confidence inspiring. How is the '84 Westy doing for you?

My problem is living in central US (Missouri) we don’t seem to have events close by with opportunities to advance skills. Maybe it’s because we are so far from big water, except a few reservoirs like Lake of the Ozarks or big rivers like the Missouri or Mississippi. Everything here is either races, or events where everybody tries to break records for number of paddlers in the water at one time (example is the annual Floatzilla on the Miss. R. In quad cities). I don’t mind traveling a ways but events here just not the same as you describe, wish they were.

My problem is I find out about events I want to go to 3 days before they take place! Is there a good place online that lists paddling specific events?
