The luxury of having two beads to work against, we used to do huge factory walls, and throw up level pads (render)every derby length, level them of and throw the mud on, scrape off to the pads, a good fibre handbrush and bucket of water will drench the wall better and faster than that piddly garden sprayer, if you get standing water, the brush will take the top off fast so you can get on. There are so many different methods used and mixes for rendering, I used to think I knew them all until you watch someone else with another come along, and now the poly renders are in and sooooo easy to use, nice job

Good tips mate, number 1 rule for us is to tape up and cover everything with plastic windows, doors etc, spending 5 minutes doing that before you start rendering saves alot of time cleaning at the end and is alot neater and more professional.

Hi pal, thanks for sharing your skills, appreciate it. I’m serious now about tackling the front of our house next spring which is a 4 bed detached (currently with mock Tudor wood half way up and brick below). I intend to remove the old render and wood and apply new render. I can understand most of the techniques but I’m wondering if I require a movement bead anywhere? my wall is broken up by two windows ; wall is around 6 metres wide at its widest but half of the width is only around 600 mm high ( with dorma bedroom roof above) so I don’t feel as though one would be required, or would you recommend playing it safe? Also, if I do require one will it be visible or can it be painted or skimmed over? thanks again Brian

I worked in Germany and used machines to put the plaster on the wall. We should use them here, it is much faster and saves the donkey work. As for wetting down the scratch coat, I wouldn't bother myself. I know this much, some people will try to spread render and after around half a dozen tries the hawk and trowel will be thrown away and a beer will be required. Remember when you first tried, come on, you took a while to get the hang of it. Good job mate!

I have had a few quotes and some have said it’s fine to go over the paint, one said he would use an angle grinder to cross cross into the bricks! And another recommended covering the house in a metal mesh first which will cost a fair bit. Multiple quotes, multiple different opinions. Blaine, Great work as always. I would like to add a couple of comments for total beginners. The first is always to work upwards as shown, as working downwards can cause problems with the render not sticking properly, The second is to ensure that you do not leave the trowel flat and pull the render off when you pull the trowel away. If you do encounter any problems with the render not sticking this could be because the render is too dry, the mix shown in the video is good, Do not panic if the render seems to come away when you first start, re apply the render where it has pulled away. It is a job that does require a little practice with application and getting the coat thickness right but you will get it if you follow the video. You may need to add a bit of water to the render as you go along but not too much, try and keep the consistency as shown. Blaine you can add any comments to this that you feel it may help or if I am not being too clear. By the way Blaine you are looking very serious, you are starting to join us old 'uns Ha Ha. Could you use a wood glue water solutions on the wall to slow down the suction of the wall??
@PlasteringForBeginners

I’ve never tried it but I wouldn’t want to risk it to be honest mate.

If you use a waterproofing additive in the first coat it will kill the suction dead, was common practice, seems maybe not anymore.

@@billbo7630 so what is yr opinion when you are in a very hot climates when you put the PVA glue solution on the wall ??
@billbo7630
@billbo7630 2 года назад
@@kojomensah7474 I personally have used a pva solution to bind porous surfaces outside and never had a problem, however I have heard it said it's not recommended outside . If you are going to try it I would soak the wall first then spray on a 3 to 1 solution on a workable erea try and get the render on whilst it's still tacky and keep moving along . If you add waterproofing as mentioned, your next coat will much easier, but if you are in a hot climate still spray it down with water.

Love your work Blaine, but please educate us the great unwashed with hot lime techniques. Check out Nigel Copsey and his tutorials, lime is the time honoured future. Cement is crap.
