As a 15 year old girl I really want to become a dental hygienist . I over think about everything and this is going to help me in the future thank you !
This was very helpful, I am 33 and have been slowly taking steps to leave my job after 13 years. I took a weekend dental assistant course a few years ago, but never accepted any job offers. I originally wanted to go for Hygiene and even enrolled in a community college. But again, never continued with it due to personal reasons. The universe is working in mysterious ways, I see an open opportunity to be able to take these steps again and now that I have the support I am getting excited to start my journey. Of course I am scared of failing my classes, I feel I am pretty smart but anatomy is frightening. I watch a lot of RU-vid videos to help motivate me, this one was the most helpful in terms of an action plan. Thank you ☺️
Glad I could help. Don’t consider failing before trying! It is in our failure where we learn & find the courage to keep trying! You never know what you’re capable of until you do it. 💘💘
Dawn you are speaking to me, my situation is very similar to yours! I understand this was last year but oh my I'm encouraged by this. Can you give an update on how you're doing now? Hopefully you get this!
Hey Dawn! How’s it going? I’m 31 and very similar story. I took a DA course when I was 24; never pursued opportunities. I’m actually currently in a professional certification now for Human Resource Management via eCornell. But honestly I’m tired of Corporate America. It’s really exhausting. I’m considering Denistry again, but I truly am nervous. I can’t afford to waste time or money.
I love this video very straight forward! Every dental hygiene school is completely different with the admissions process. Some require one thing another school can require something completely different even down to the interview process. We had to write an essay one of the dental hygiene program. They only look at your test scores in your prerequisites. Everything is different, so you really just have to research every school individually because everything is different. No dental hygiene school is the same.
Just do dentist since your young . I’m 27 a dental assistant and I ask my dentist is it too late to go to school to become dentist and he told me it’s a lot of money every year for school he told me I was better off being a dentist when I graduated high school . So just become a dentist and get it over with you make way more money than a assistant or a hygienist. One more year and I’ll start hygienist school since I love the dental field but since your young just knock out becoming a dentist . Good luck 💕
@@pepsidiboss It doesn't matter what his opinion is!! Only what God said, it is never too late to become a dentist! Follow your dreams!! He just want you to continue to work for him and do stuff on the lower-end, please don't do it to yourself.
This video was very helpful! I’ve always wanted to become a hygienist, I’ve been a DA for 5 years. I was always worried about how I was going to pay my bills while being in school. Did you work while being in the program?
As an upcoming senior in highschool what steps should I take during my senior year to prepare for college and to be sure that dental hygiene is what I would like to pursue.
I’m currently 17 and have 1 more year till I graduate highschool but I do dual enrollment and will have all of my pre recs done when I graduate as well as have 20 hours of shadowing a dental office. The program I’m applying to only takes 15 people a year and I’m so worried I won’t make it just off my age.
Woah! Congrats to you! This is super cool that you’ve started at such a young age! Sending you positive vibes that you will be able to get in a program 😊 💫
@@jackyv6974 lottery based system? As in, you and other applicants are chosen randomly wether you can get in or not, pretty much a lottery system lol..
You said that there are usually 1-2 years of prerequisites to take before the actual dental hygiene program, how does that work? Like will that cost extra money in addition to the tuition for the degree? Will I be taking those prerequisites at the college that is offering the program?
That will depend. Hygiene programs usually have limited seats, so they only accept a certain amount of students (it's very competitive in most states). Most programs have a bunch of pre-reqs, some don't. For example, NYU only requires a BIO and MATH class before applying which you can take anywhere, but it's an expensive private university. Community colleges near me require a lot of courses so it would take anywhere from 1 to 2 years depending if you've taken some before and if you enroll full or part time. Some schools prefer if you do the pre-reqs in their school because 1. they only accept students from their own school, or 2. they take into consideration length of time you've been a student in their school. The last part means: someone that took pre-reqs somewhere else might get accepted into the program, but only if there are no other options. I hope that makes sense. You should definitely check with the school you wish to attend. You have to pay for all classes you take although some community colleges could be free depending on income. Many 2-year colleges in NYS offer full rides through grants/scholarships if it is your first college degree. Overall, community colleges are the most affordable option.
I am thinking about becoming an dental hygienist, but my issues is i work a full time job 5am -2pm five days a week , I have been searching for evening classes but no luck ( by the way am from Florida), do you have any idea why they don’t offer evening classes?
22 years old, just came home from the military in November 2021 I’m thinking of becoming a Dental Hygienist but I’m worried about the test before entering the school 🤦🏾♂️
Can you complete prerequisites your prerequisites online? I’m currently working and feel that will be the best route to keep working until I can’t anymore.
I'm a tad bit confused, oops. So after high-school I did attend college for 1 year. But now it's been like 3-4 years since I've been back. If I don't have all the pre-reqs required will I not be accepted?
I believe if you did the pre-reqs they should still be good (my school wants them to be done within 5 years of applying to the program). If you didn’t do some the prereqs you’ll have to go back and finish them. I had to repeat a class because it had been 6 years since I’d taken it.
This was extremely helpful! I’m 17 and I had no idea where to even start and what information is correct (there is so much out there) so thank you for this because google is overwhelming lol
Thanks for the video! I am on prereqs right now, and I don't know if do I need to do something to prove that I'd done shadowing a dental hygienist or not. It is because my counselor said I just need to say to the supervisor dental hygiene program that I'd done shadowing, no need evidence such as paperwork or something. This does not make sense to me. Can you share your experience with shadowing or any recommendation? Thank you.
Shadowing was a requirement of the actual application to apply to my program. It was a strict guideline to follow. I could only get so many hours at one office vs another. There were forms created my the program that the hygienist I shadowed had to sign afterwards as proof. Check your school’s application policy on shadowing..
I’m 36 and did a career change and went to a dental assistant program and im thinking about going into dental hygiene or nursing. Im not sure but I do know I want to be in healthcare. I hear getting into dental hygiene program is competitive . What makes it competitive ? Is there a way I can take a prerequisite course to see if I’ll like it or handle the courses?
i have a question . i’ll be a senior in a few months and i’m about to apply for colleges in september - december. should i apply to a community college that has a dental hygiene program or should i apply to a community college, get my associates and then transfer to another school that has a dental hygiene program ?
I am a sophomore at a university already however my school don't offer dental. Is it too late for me to try to search up dental school and still manage to graduate in 4 years?
Hi i have been thinking about going into dental hygiene and I just graduated highschool and am going to a 4 year university and my major is public health and I was wondering if i did the pre requisites could i then just go to a dental hygiene program after graduating from my college and just transferring the prerequisites
This gave me so much hope. I’m currently an rda and I want to go back to school but didn’t even know where to start. This was very very helpful. Thank you ❤
Hi, i’m going into my senior year of hs and i want to go a university . I was wondering if i can go to any university and major in biology or dental assisting, then go to dental hygiene school during/after college because there aren’t many schools that have a major for dental hygiene itself.
Very informative vid really enjoyed watching! You mentioned going to community college or a university. I was thinking to try a technical school is that just as good? If anyone else knows feel free to lmk please😊
The teas test is stressing me out!! I can’t give up; I have came far. I really need some help, I’m so close to the required score. Can you tell me anything in regard to the teas exam?
Hey! I believe you may have mentioned it in your video, but I was wondering if you recommend a certain book for studying for the TEAS test? Thank you for posting these videos, especially this one, it really helps!
Hey, I see that your shirt says Mississippi Delta and I was wondering did you attend MDCC? I am a full time student there and I will be applying for the DH program soon. If so, how was the program? Was it hard to get in ?
Yes, I went to MDCC (best decision ever btw)! The program was tough but really fun, and because they accept such a small class compared to other programs, it can be more competitive. Go for it anyway! What’s for you is for you!
Hi, I’m from Mississippi too ( Central/ Madison). Did you get into the program? I went to ole miss for pre requisite courses (for nursing but I’m sure many will cross over to DH), and I’m scared of the difficulty level. Maybe I should do dental assisting first? Thanks.
Hey. It was a wonderful video. I just wanted to ask you about working while doing those degrees. Is it possible to work full time as a dental assistant while doing associates and bachelors?
Classes/clinic are usually from 8am-4pm daily sooo I’m not really sure if you can work full time as an assistant while in school. The hours will conflict!
@@KaleshaMonet hey thank you for your reply. I’m currently in high school and wanna go towards this direction, I suck at maths though. And I’m not a huge fan of science. I mean, I can do basic maths and that’s it. Will maths and science be crucial and will it matter if I’m not good at those subs in high school?
@@Aditya.adhikariii From what I see, you will have to do very well in the prerequisites. Which are science type classes. But lack of talent can always be overcome with effort, atleast in this case haha
Thank you very much for the video.♥️I found answers to almost all the questions I was looking for. I have only one question. I have been in America for 8 months. I am a Greencard holder. The education I received in my country is a completely different field. To study in the field of dental hygiene, do I have to go to a dental hygiene school first or can I start with an associate degree? That is, they will require me to study dental hygiene first in order to apply for the associate degree? Can I start dental hygiene classes from scratch with Associate ? Thanks in advance
@@KaleshaMonet But what can someone who has no dental hygiene education start to study in this field? Because I have no dental education even not any healthy education and I want to start from scratch.😞Will any dental hygiene school accept me? Thank you very much for your reply
@@afandinabat250hey! I’m in the same field as you- degree from another country and new American resident You’ll research the school/s you’re looking to get into and sign up at a community college (saves $$$) and take those courses Main Prereqs are A&P1 and 2, Gen Chem, Organic Chem, Microb Non Science Prereqs: Communication, Public Speaking, College Algebra, Statistics etc. (From my own research to my aim schools) I’m not Kalesha but I hope this helps!
I’m from alabama but on the border line of Georgia. I plan to attend in Georgia but i’m also scared because in Hygiene school you have to find patients. Will it be difficult finding patients going to a school that’s an hour or two away?
At the program I attended, it was up to me to find patients but the also had recall patients that attended every 3, 4, and 6 months that would be assigned to students. I recommend to spread the word wherever you go in GA. For instance, on my college campus, I’d meet with the teachers and coaches to ask that they make it a requirement that their students and athletes come see me at the clinic.
I am sorry to hear that but I know you’re killing it. I do not know enough about your situation to really suggest anything other than what you’ve possibly thought of. I hope you can one day rely on family support to go after the career you deserve to have for you and your child. God bless! 💕💕
it kind of sucks when the prerequisites you've completed for one dental hygiene program are not applicable or the same for another program. It also gets kind of confusing, on what prerequisites you should take...
This is my dilemma now. Going back and forth with anxiety and regrets. But, I think you should still go for it! The time is going to pass regardless if you attempt or not and we are still young !
Our clinic had recall patients established but I also had to find my own. I’d ask family, friends, family of friends, friends of family, and people on campus to be my patients. Honestly, I’d ask anybody
I’m tired of warehouse jobs OH my lord 😭 also I’m choosing to do labored job as a petite 4’8 sized girl (the PAY) I’m getting paid more than a retail/fast food manager is BUT it’s tiring and my body just can NOT so I’m deciding to become a DH 🩵
What if I just graduated high school and went straight to college + majored in dental hygiene for 4 years? Could that work? Or is the associates required?
I am currently doing health promotion as my major and I want to become a dental hygienist but my university doesn’t offer the course! What would you recommend doing?
I believe there are some specific science classes needed in addition to your general studies to transition into dental hygiene! Check the pre-requisite requirements at the school you’re looking into!
should i become a dental hygienist cuz i wanted to become an RDH since ninth grade yet i did job shadow a dental hygienist fo a careers class and i got a C+ is C+ a bad grade ?
