Perhaps the most festive of stories in the Sherlock Holmes canon. There are turkeys and geese if memory serves and of course a fabulous gem. Whatever happened to our coveting of fabulous gems: it's all bitcoin nowadays. Anyway, sit back, pour yourself a sneaky glass of Manns Brown, and enjoy this Yuletide tale of fowl goings-on.

Geese don't have crops and they digest and pass their food in 2 hours. So it's not very plausible but ACD didn't know those fun facts about geese. (I have lots of geese.)

Loved it! I'm surprised that The blue carbuncle wasn't on Doyle's favorites list, it is an enjoyable and clever story. "Watson, you can see everything. You fail, however, to reason from what you see. You are too timid in drawing your inferences." Honestly, Who wouldn't be hesitant to tell his inferences to Sherlock Holmes? Despite what he said, Dr. Watson wasn't stupid he was, after all, a medical doctor and he was often able to follow Holmes's reasoning.

Just saw the Jeremy Brett version of this on TV and I was a little disappointed that he kept the carbuncle! So I decided to listen to the original, here, only to find that the only mention Holmes makes is that it stays in his "Museum" and that, unlike Brett's Holmes, he doesn't even get up and free the accused! Would the readers, back in the day, be rightly expected to assume that he would do the right thing; return the jewel in some way to make it appear was never stolen in the first place and we're just not sophisticated enough in this day&age to make those connections?

Good evening everyone, some months ago, I wrote a comment asking help to find a story, I got some answers but no one can identify it, so I decided to listen to all the stories in order to find it. Here I am, 6 months later and I did not find it!!! I am truly starting to think that I dream this and it doesnt actually exist!!! It starts describing a very cold and foggy day, sherlock its at the basement making a lot of noise and watson is reading something, then at dinner sherlock tells watson something about a very important experiment (something about bullets being fired, i think) and tells him that if he wants to know about this he must promise to stay at home and not talk to anyone, watson accepts this and sherlock goes back to the basement; then in the middle of the nigth a friend of watson arrives at the house and ask him to receive him. Thats the part where I always felt asleep. If anyone can help me with this I will be forever grateful!!! I am sure that im not creative enough to dream the story by myself but I listened to all the stories here, even the pastiches and I CAN NOT FOUND IT, maybe I dont remember correctly or I dont know... help please!!

I know the story you are thinking of. But it's not an ACD story. It's one of many written about Holmes and Watson by other authors. It's here on RU-vid, or at least was until recently. Try listening to ones read by Benedict Cumberbatch, I think it's read by him. Hope this helps.

I don't know if these are in order but you would think the Watson would have been able to deduce that the hat was of good quality. After all they were as familiar with hats as we are with sunglasses or something similar. A modern person can usually tell a quality pair of glasses over cheap ones especially if one wore them every day. The mistake Holmes makes is to assume a large head signifies a large brain and that a large brain signifies high intelligence. Einstein had a smaller than average brain.
