I was a nail artist for 27 years. Artist, not tech. I invested soooo much in supplies and time and even owned a salon. Big mistake. it was almost impossible to find 'artists' to fill the booths, lots of techs who were doing nails till something else came along. too many clients that did not understand they couldn't get five hours worth of work in thirty minutes and less than 20 dollars. BUT..... when you find committed clients who share your passion and respect your talent there is nothing more satisfying in the world.

Ramona, agree, it is extremely hard to find good dedicated nail techs to work in the salon now

Nailcou I work myself in a lovely and confortable home studio as a pedicurist in Switzerland since 2 years and with a diplom.Hier is sooo dificult to earn enough money to live with such work.Because the swiss mentality .At the summer not so much people like to wear open shoes to show their feets.They prefer the closed one because they think there are not enough warm to take open shoes.At the winter it is worst because they think if they use closed shoes (as sommer) they don't need to take care to theirs feets.As long as they don' t need to show them in public , it doens't matter how they are looking. And i find so stupid when some clients tell me such things.
@nailtechtaylor3015
@nailtechtaylor3015 7 лет назад
Ana Maria Oliveira Give your clients incentive to book regular appointments during the winter. Offer spa pedicures with a spa-like environment, so that it is more about the massage and relaxation, not so much about the nails and skin.

Nail Tech Taylor That's a good idea.And before Christmas is a good time and hier it is coold enough.So that the people like to taked care and feel good .With my paraffin bath as example too.I used to put some spa music with a relaxing ambient with some good smelling candles.So that people like to feel care and as a new born😇 or a jewel💎.I think i have to make some flyers and lovely und convinced written with this special spa treatment.Thank you very much and Greetings.

One thing for me: you don’t need an e file!! Idk why I kept holding out on doing nails because I thought I needed an expensive e file... when you are taught to apply product neatly and correctly, filing will be easy. Wish I could’ve told my past self this early on😂😂

TallCool 1 I agree with you about some people keep their secrets and don’t want to share their learning experiences. I’m the kind of person who want to help people in general not just nails. I have no animosity, jealousy or envy if someone is better than me. I’m taking some part time courses and have encountered that. That’s ok we sow what we reap, I believe in that and my late dad and mom stood by that. ❤️

The advice I'd give to someone starting is work for a company that's established and offers continuing education. Don't do booth rental if you don't have the clients and practice your craft. Also, manage your time you don't need to be in the salon 12hrs. waiting on clients or trying to get clients. If you don't feel like your learning anything in school take classes, you won't get hours but you'll be a better tech and have a leg up when done with training

I don't use drill bit's for shaping nails after application. I always try to do my best to sculpt them so they will need just a little filing with a file. But if you like to use e-file the same shape will do good - "corn" shape bit or rounded cylinder

Another tip: Be patient building your clientele . I’m 16 and currently getting my hours to become a certified nail tech . It’s kind of hard for me to find clientele but finding them doesn’t come easy. So I did what you said , stopped over spending on nail products that I won’t really need . I’ll just stick with the basics for now . This was a very informative video . Thanks !! ❤️

I'm not a nail tech but after watching others on RU-vid I'd say attend any conferences /conventions, (esp if held near where you live to keep costs lower or combine into a vacation), you can to keep ahead of latest trends.. I've heard allot of them hold demonstrations of their new products and even give some out! That way you learn the newest things clients will be seeing soon and wanting.. so you can learn before clients even see it. I so want to go to one..but I'm not trained and woukd look silly.. I'm at the level where I did my first set of Gel on myself.. and was good enough to post on on Twitter! Not perfect but better than I expected just watching all these brilliant people on you tube.. my acrylic (years before you tube) was an utter failure, but I may try again soon just want to perfect my gel first. Thanks for video.. now I can better appreciate what new techs go through! !

Thank you for that information Anastasia, I am glad I saw these tips. I can admit that I was really poor at promoting myself, this was because of not just been new to business 1 year in but then after completing my L3 NSI course and also coming 2nd in a Matchfit Skills Yorkshire & Humber college competition I was thirsty for more, but what was I felt dragging me down wasn't what I had learnt, but I wasn't confident because my timing sucked!!! And it still does, but off ill at the moment so I've probably lost the few clients I had. I don't know what I am doing wrong, I know I start panicking when it gets to a two hour mark and I'm only half way through application. But I must say the clients I did have all were never straight forward lovely nails, nail bitters, fingers that were not straight so the natural nail was never straight. I've used tips, silk and fibre glass and the NSI silver forms. But I still can't get my timing right! Luckily with three of the home courses I am doing at present come with all the equipment which helps and stops me buying more ;-) and one other homes course I can use my products for now at least.

I really like your videos! I'm also a beginner. At this moment doing only at home to friends, thinking of going to rent a place. But i'm so afraid that nobody will go to me, that i still don't know lots of things... i'm very scare to invest lots of many. But also every day i watch or read something ant know more, this is encouraging me... Thank you, for your videos. I learn from them more than in workshops, they are so poor at my country and very expensive...

My tips: Some people don't tip based on their cultures. Some can dislike you for no reason, and even if you do an amazing job that won't make their attitude budge. Ask clients to voice any concerns or discomfort they may feel.

I'm so new, just starting working on a nail shop on weekends only. I am all by myself there,no one to give me idea or show me, I am working on my own in the dark. in this case, I don't know what my clients think of me, I am so scared I will fail.....

Maya, do you already have clients? Do they come back for another appointments? Don't think about this way, just try to do your best every time and they will come back if they will like it. If you will feel not confident they can easily feel it too. Good luck! You will succeed

Sarah, I think we have the same here - beauty institutes are usually focused on theory and giving certificates, not much on practice. If they class was just few days then you definitely need to look for more classes with more practice. Good luck!
