I've been part of the RED community, using their ecosystem, for a long time. I think this is the most concise, no BS, just what you need to know, video I have ever seen for end to end work flow with RED. I'll integrate some of your tips into my workflow. It's always encouraging to learn a thing or two from a new RED user. Great work! Also, you are a talented DP. The example footage in this video is gorgeous!
Agreed also. SO glad I stumbled onto his videos! Someone does needs to do a real series about accurate color correction vs. color grading - someone who's been around since before the time when people started using still cameras to make movies, so that it's someone who actually understands RYB gains, why they are what they are, and how to actually calibrate color to an accurate, measurable representation prior to "grading." :) I'm not sure any accurate tutorials exist on the subject. Kind of like timecode - no one outside older filmmakers and tv studio engineers really understands it anymore well enough to explain it, much less teach how to use it. In fact, most don't even believe it's valuable. People spend $300 apiece on little devices to feed timecode into cameras without ever understanding what to do with it later, and even post in production companies producing shows for network tv just ignore the embedded tc and use plural eyes, smh.
Thanks man! Agreed on colour grading/correction. I may collaborate with a pro to talk about it at some point here cause I am just doing what feels right and is not scientifically accurate. And ha TC, yeah something I also just started using with the Komodo but such a big fan!
@@Joey_Helms I started do that on my social media channels a while back. I would see footage and wonder what lens and aperture was being used. I hope those types of detail sharing becomes more mainstream.
Great stuff, keep it up! Also, I just wanted to point out that with the Komodo you don't need to worry about black shading again after changing exposure. On DSMC2 cameras you would have to do this if you didn't black shade for all the exposure range. But on the Komodo, when you black shade it takes into account all the different exposures for that sensor temp. You'll notice this when the changing exposures the E may go yellow, then switch back to green. And as you mentioned the T/E (T=Temp and E=Exposure), watch these because if the T is green that means the temp changes haven't been significant enough to need a new black shade. Also, that blob you saw almost looks like you had some light leak when you black shaded. Most lens caps aren't dark enough to do a trustworthy black shade. I would recommend the body cap over a lens cap in most situations. And then even trying to cover it up with something else dark if outside on a sunny day. Finally, this is super important, black shade after your camera has warmed up (can speed this up by letting it record for several minutes). Hope this helps!
I need to make a correction to one thing. If you do make a significant enough change to exposure (+-1/2 sec) you will see the E go yellow, indicating a new calibration is suggested. But that is a pretty significant change as I've only seen the E go yellow when really cranking the shutter speed. Which ideally you don't want to do anyways to keep a natural motion blur.
@@CineGraphStudios No, this is not a beta issue, this is just how the camera works. It’s really not as big of an issue as you think. But it is something to consider. This isn’t a point and shoot system.
@@WeAreMapuche I'm coming from an Eva1, so not worried about having a run and gun system. Just looking for my foot in the door with a Red, but wondering if I should save for an alternative Red.
Have had my Komodo for 4 months now. One of the best if not THE best camera investments I've ever made. Your videos have been insanely helpful in this experience and process.
@@BrandonTalbot but the image quality is better than 6k pro??? and when you colourgranding is better tahn 6k pro??now i just want tp upgrade my production to hightend quality...so i consider to buy bmpcc 6kpro or red 6 k komodo , I shoot movie, commercial and music videos
Yep. The Komodo seems like it will make lots of people happy. And I started to watch your footage and realized all the shots are from Chicago. You did it justice. Unfortunately, in a few weeks it will start to feel like winter.....
Ha, thanks so much. It's a great and very different camera from the R5. Feel free to use the affiliate link in the description if you are going to buy the Komodo :)
This is an amazing video as a new Komodo user. Just subscribed and saved into my favorite videos. Many thanks for such an amazing feed Joey! Cheers from Atlanta, GA
This was excellent, man. Thank you so much for all the info!!! I'm planning to rent a RED Komodo, so I need to know the basics and this video has a perfect timing. Happy to be part of your gang!
THIS IS VIDEO WAS ALL I NEEDED, I can not wait for the official release! Unfortunately I live in Brazil, the Komodo will get a lot of taxes, maybe I will just rent or something like that, gosh how I hate my country. But over all, amazing video, cleared my doubts and made me think (in my opinion, of course) this was the best camera announcement in 2020, sorry Sony, sorry Canon, RED nail it!
Hey I would like to see a video on how you choose cinema lenses and generally a guide for beginner to pro in buying a cine lens. I would like to see different brands, kits , the best lenses used by pros and much affordable ones or at least an alternative to that.also why should you use a cinema lenses? Do they produce better quality videos than the normal photography lenses like sigma 18 to 35 which you used in one of your videos? Can you explain it from a beginner point of view regarding cinema lenses.
Men, i like your channel, youtube is my school and i watch a lot of videos and tutorials. But you stand out and do it really nice. Nice how you explain everything. I am looking to buy a komodo so this helps. Thanks for your content.
Much appreciate this kind of video! I’ve worked with DSMC2 but it has been maybe 5 years since. Now- with a Komodo on preorder I’m thankful to get a great refresh. Subscribed- keep it up.
Can you make a video showing how you edit your RU-vid videos? I'm loving the way you animate the screen recordings and the little visible pixels. Very cool!
Bro, you rock man! I've been waiting for some info and you delivered! And like always with such good content! I'm eagerly waiting for the final production model so I can get one! Thanks a ton!
@@Joey_Helms As someone considering the Komodo, this is the only video that gives me a proper understanding of what I'll be purchasing. Thank you for taking the time to make this video, appreciate you man. Have a great new year. A
This is quality stuff, Josh! Thinking about a RED (also here in Chicago) and it's fun to see your intro to everything using footage from around the city. Thanks!
Excellent video. The only thing I would've liked to see more of is how to expose low light scenes. I've been having trouble with that when the light isn't controllable. Again, amazing work.
Thanks a lot! :) Well low light just give the sensor as much light as possible... Fast lens wide open, 180 degree shutter angle and then in post define the acceptable level of ISO (nothing you need to worry about during the shoot). If there are streetlights, some clipping of the lightsources should be fine. This is at least how I handle it.
@@Joey_Helms Thanks for the reply Joey! I appreciate it. I was a bit confused due to the "Low light capture" video on RED's channel -- they reference having your ISO set to a lower value while increasing the exposure of the scene via light, but to my understanding ISO doesn't affect the exposure of the raw data, so why would they speak about lowering the ISO to decrease your noise floor? I was thinking it didn't matter either, like you said. Confusing stuff. With that said, I will use your method! What do you feel is the upper level of ISO you can shoot at (or adjust to in post, rather) before it starts to become unusable?
How I interpret it is that they are assuming that you can introduce more light in your scene and basically say don't crank up your ISO and then built your light and exposure out but work off a lower ISO. But hey, I am no expert. For me, w/o noise reduction in post, I think 1600 is the limit depending on how dynamic the scene is. Just my $0.02. everyone has different opinions on whats acceptable ;)
@@Joey_Helms I think you're right, and I think my interpretation was just getting jumbled up in my head and not making sense. Appreciate the help! Subbed!
Hands down... This is the most complete real-world review I've ever experienced. I'm a beginner to cinematography, and considering this Red camera for a while now. Glad I found you... Alreay subscribed and liked and also pressed the dislike 2 times... Good lord... This is awesome brother!
@@Joey_Helms Do you love your Komodo and enjoy using it , this factor is more important to me than features. also do you think this camera is overkill for hobbies / travel. thanks in advance
Really awesome content mate. I've been following the videos as well as testing the footage you so kindly provided. It's been really great. Please do keep it up for other grear as well!
@@Joey_Helms what is your opinion on the Komodo as an upgrade? I want to stay in the under $8k range for camera and accessories and use existing canon glass that I own. Would be for indie films.
Debating between trying to get my hands on a pre-order or just waiting and getting the final release version. Either way I'm very excited for this camera!
@@jdwhite1 I ordered from B&H over two weeks ago. RED sent an unknown number (probably a few hundred) to some of their "premiere" dealers, and B&H was one of them. I think I've heard that most people are expecting to get their Komodo around October 15th. Honestly man, your best bet is to try to join the "Red Komodo Users" group on Facebook, and look to see if anyone is selling theirs. Times have been tough for a lot of people, so some people have had to resort to selling their ST Komodo.
F*, this thing has quality, I was thinking to buy a7III, but...Komodo, I still can't believe this quality. This guy on the bike is just the essence of good grading and deep blacks combined with softness. Can you actually give me one raw shot I want to try it? Greetings from Chicago , neighbor
I dont think the ISO effects exposure at all. Its more like a lut. It changes the histogram but the actual footage is shot at the same exposure. Much different than say a dslr which changes the sensors sensitivity to light. You can see this if you move iso it dosent change the traffic lights even a little bit.
Thanks a lot for this great info. Im currently still on canon 80d but have been ready to purchase a black magic pocket 6k for months, but I am very much indecisive. My friend/mentor highly recomended me to get this camera instead, but I am a little hesitant because RED scare me a little. I have barely worked a little with 4k clips and always had a monitor and "run and gun" setup. the Black Magic 6k pocket is 2399 dollars in my country, the RED (with grips, cards, cables and no batteries/monitor) komodo is 9000 dollars. I feel like I need the stepping stone of learning the black magic first, but my friend tries to convince me I will get over the fear and "new" workflow fast, and it will pay off way more. Sorry long comment. As I said - I can be very indecisive :D
@@Joey_Helms I’m shooting professionally (or really semi professional atm), but I’m trying to get bigger and more gigs. Currently I’ve only filmed some weddings, music videos for small artists, concerts ect mostly with my 80D and sometimes renting black magic Pocket 4k. I feel like I atleast need an upgrade from canon 80D. This is 100% for sure - but I am not certain if a red komodo is the way for me right now (but my friend/mentor highly encouraged me to look into Komodo instead of BMP 6k
Really informative video! Great work. One thing I am noticing and I'm not sure if anyone else has commented, but there are glitches in your export of this video. Specifically at 3:24, 12:09. I've also noticed it on some others of your videos, as well as another channel's Komodo review. Is this a problem with the Komodo? Seems pretty glaring, but odd that I haven't seen anyone else notice.
Zcam and komodo is more towards short film and shoots where you have more time to set up whereas c70 is more of a swiss army knife for gun and gun, events and quick workflow. You have to decide which category is more important to you.
