Both right don't worry, even Gen Minelaials know, but we still like revisiting ourselfs. I still to this days think 80s 😅 dragon ball was like whoa 😅 😂 LOL XD 😆 🤣
Real shit about ChiChi. That was always the joke since ChiChi was introduced was that she was hyperemotional and jumped to conclusions, having said that…the first time she let Goku and Gohan leave the house and go see his friends Goku is murdered and Gohan is kidnapped by the guy that just tried to murder her husband for a year and left to fend for himself out in the wilderness. When Goku returns to life Gohan is nearly killed, Goku is nearly killed and immediately and then they’re just like bye Mom were going to space OH SHIT THE PLANET IS BLOWING UP…and Goku is probably dead again. Chi Chi is honestly low key the most relatable person in the show.
Chi Chi is like Skyler in Breaking Bad. People hate her because she's always raining on the protagonist's parade and trying to stop him from doing his thing but from an objective standpoint she...kinda makes valid points.
And when she found out Goku was alive, he comes back to a heart virus and then has to fight cell, then dies for 7 years, then her son nearly dies, her other son nearly dies, Goku nearly dies AGAIN, a few years later a god arrives about to destroy the planet and Goku nearly dies.
"Chi Chi is honestly low key the most relatable person in the show." You did NOT just say that after the rest of your comment... How can you relate to being a mother of a child who gets kidnapped, kidnapped again, gets beaten up, goes to space, almost gets killed again, etc? I don't think, or I HOPE you're not living in extreme fear or anxiety for your own child.
Honestly, if I got my neck snapped by an 8ft, 350 lbs grown alien man on a foreign planet at the age of like 4 or 5, I'd retire to study bugs also. This is why Gohan is still my favorite character. As a child, he was kinda forced to grow up and become a warrior to protect his loved ones and the innocent, getting beaten and bloodied by people way above his age and weight class from elite soldiers to weaponized killing machines. Then, there was a point where Gohan was the strongest and took on the responsibility of guarding the planet, but he chose to do it his own way by becoming the Great Saiyaman so he can study as himself in piece. Finally, we come to Super, where Gohan is living his best life with his family. He's able to live the life he wants to live comfortably and without fear that he and his family are in danger because he can rely on and trust his dad to be there for him, but he also isn't afraid to step up and fight when he's needed. This is why I never understood the whole "He fell off" topic. Gohan didn't fall off, he grew up, he went to school cause he wanted to go to school. He's studying bugs because he wants to study bugs, and he stopped fighting because he never liked fighting to begin with. Hell, no one realized that Gohan needed glasses until after he graduated high school. Gohan will remain my favorite character because he forged his own path and chose what he wanted to be. Chichi pushed him and helped him towards his goals, Goku understood and supported his dreams, and Piccolo is a really cool uncle. Gohan never fell off. He soared above expectations.Sorry for the rant.
@@Majin_Koolaid I must be watching a different SUPER because he didn’t cower in fear when frieza came back He was completely outclassed by frieza at that point and was literally tortured before his father saved him
To add to the Chi-Chi point, I believe it really helps her character when you understand that she's the equivalent to a country bumpkin. She wants this idealized image for her family that, for the comedy in the series, she hardly ever gets. She wants her son to be a rich scholar and her husband to be a hard working man because that's what she thinks families are *supposed* to do. Anything out of that mold upsets her greatly, like her son and husband dying their hair yellow like delinquents typically did in Japan. And it's nice to see her eventually chill out after accepting that her family just ain't normal.
Ngl idk if that even works. I mean she was living in a castle till she was a teenager. But when you look at what Gohan was going through and at the context of being a parent, Chi Chi's behavior was more than warranted. When you look at the difference between the settings around Gohan's childhood vs Goten's, it makes sense why she mellowed out some (certainly not because hes the 2nd son or whatever)
@@thelightspeeddash6329 Her behavior is definitely warranted, no disagreement there. I just find her to be a comedic stereotype of the country bumpkin trope because of her lack of formal education, grand visions for her children and farming lifestyle. Her living in a castle doesn't make her exempt from the trope. It's a common idea that people who grew up in the countryside want their children to be successful by the ideas of "the big city." Instead of asking what Gohan wants, she pushes that idea into him because that's what she thinks is best for the family. Why does she think that way? Because she could believe that that's what big happy families are supposed to be like. I just think Toriyama took that idea and made her a gag that works in both comedy and realism since it makes sense that a mother would hate all the violence around her son, but that's just the name of the show so it's unavoidable.
Mr Satan has a power level of 265, survived being back handed by Perfect Cell, being punched by Majin Buu, and being punched by Trunks. Mr Satan would be able to solo to the entire original Dragon Ball series up to before Goku drunk the Sacred Divine Water, with absolutely no ki training.
To add to the Chichi and Gohan points: Gohan's first encounter with violence was as a toddler, getting kidnapped, trying to save your dad while still not understanding what's going on, and next thing you know, your dad is dead and you're off to live and grow up with a man you'd never met before this traumatic event. It's incredible Gohan could even fight at all. And then imagine all this happens to your first born son at such a young age!? AND THEN THE NEXT TIME YOU SEE HIM AFTER A YEAR, YOU FIND HIM UNCONSCIOUS, BEAT UP AND NAKED?? Dawg, someone would have to pay lmfao That said, it's totally understandable why Gohan and Chichi aren't huge on Gohan fighting. It was never really something Gohan was able to enjoy, more like preparation for traumatic events. Also, one of my favorite details about Vegeta's sacrifice in the Buu arc is him doing this full well that he's going hell and there's no wishing him back. He accepts that he can't be redeemed and decides to make that decision for the people he loves anyway.
Dragon Ball's plot is great actually. I used to be one of the people who thought "Dragon Ball is bad 'cause, you know, is only about fights and the story is so basic". But when you think about it seriously, it's so hard to give so much emotions and create so much iconic moments with a story being that simple. Toriyama really was a genius
I feel what you're saying but by definition that's not what a great "plot" is . That's great character and world building. Those things aren't mutually inclusive to a plot
@@randokku yes, but what he described in his comment are not "plot". Having Emotional and iconic moments aren't a plot, The sequence in which you plan and present those moments is.
One thing I realized is Gohan is an anomaly. He's first of his kind, a hybrid, but he had all the pure Saiyan qualities as well as hybrid. Born with a tail and went oozaru From what I remember, he's the only Saiyan that have dramatically high rage boost. Doesn't have to train as hard to reach higher heights. And personally I think "beast" is a hybrid Saiyan form.
Yeah, that's the one aspect people don't take into consideration too much. It's always "Is it good or bad?" But never "is a show entertaining?" I enjoy Dragonball, Dragonball Z, and yes Dragonball Super, and even Heroes, regardless of if it's good or bad, because Dragonball is always entertaining. Also, there's plenty of good shows that aren't entertaining, where I feel like people watch them get that nugget of understanding of the show. It feels more like fanciful research than entertainment.
I would go further than that, Dragonball has a good plot. While the details can be what gets things muddled, there is a distinct narrative through-line in each of the arcs and Toriyama managed to utilize thematic/idealized characterization (making a character a representation of the themes or ideology) seldom breaking a character's established traits and personality. Goku alone has been the representative of many themes through the entire original run, and I don't think anyone would ever say Goku stopped being in-character. That is a skill that even some of the greatest writers in history could never accomplish. You typically only see a writer do this with either a single completed work or a completed works that are only published after all works are completed, Toriyama did this in a fast-paced environment (manga), for many years, in an incomplete work (meaning it was ongoing), and did it for 519 chapters. I would say Toriyama's flaws are nothing compared to his actual writing prowess.
the one about gohan annoyed me the most because after the cell sage it made gohan look like he was gonna be the main protag and they just bring goku back... so it ruined it
He would have been a great protagonist to. He’s way more interesting than goku lol in my mind gohan always was the protag because he always plays a huge role in each arc.

Bulma's an unreliable narrator for Future Trunks. Yamcha was always shown to be faithful. Bulma was the one who was always sweet on other guys. Yamcha's the goat for handling the breakup with grace though. The JP VAs were actually shocked and upset when they were told about the breakup. They thought it was out of character. Toriyama just needed to add Trunks 😭
Yeah I think that is true as well cause Yamcha only stared hanging out with other female partners after having an falling out with bulma during his early days of his Titans league baseball career during the saiyan saga and post into the later arcs so for the most part Yamcha was pretty faithful overall, which is kinda crazy cause Yamcha was there for her when she wanted too find a boyfriend back in their teen days but when Yamcha just wanted bulma too come see one of his baseball games she ultimately didn’t ended up deciding to go which is kinda ehh and plus when those groupies would come around him when he would originally get fame as an handsome martial artist from the budokai tenkaichi events he would always been shown and stated too avoid them while being in a active relationship with bulma at the capsule corp. headquarters residence so future bulma was just overreacting by calling Yamcha a playing the field type of guy because of their argument situations where it looked like Yamcha was being unfaithful to her when in reality he wasn’t in fact this trope played out a lot in O.G. Dragon Ball and has so in many other romantic drama mangaka/anime series alike.
Remember in that filler episode where Bulma got jealous at Yamcha bc he had a bunch of girls following him arround even tho he doesn't even talks to them at all? Yeah, that relationship was never meant to work lol
@user-oy1ji4mx3e Because we never seen him interact with girls before Meanwhile we've seen Bulma flirt onscreen and in the manga with other men constantly

Hello from Japan. Hope things are great and like the content. I grew up with Dragon Ball, the original. I watched DBZ in daycare when other kids were watching barney. My original memory of DBZ waz Piccolo getting his arm blowen off and the teachers saying that we probably shouldn't be showing this as I was saying that I love this. I honestly have to thank the Dragon Ball series as it's part of the reason why I chose to permanentally live in Japan within the next 4 years.
1:55 If I recall, Goku only intentionally involved Gohan once, against Cell. Every other time, Goku was either dead, incapacitated, or MIA, wherein Gohan was forced into it, and moved into battle himself out of a sense of justice, respectively. Goku even sent Gohan away a few times, when the situation got crazy enough.
Nah Goku was willing to have Gohan fight the Androids as well. Its why he trained with him for three years and even went with them where the androids were supposed to arrive. But the rest of your points I agree with
He wasn't wiiling to have Gohan fight the android, he was training him so he would not be killed like everyone in Trunk's future. During the whole android arc Gohan stayed on the side line and did not fight.
@@dessnikoss So he brought him to the fight and just expected Gohan to stand around doing nothing while everyone risked their lives to fight? That doesn't sound like Goku and he knows thats not gonna happen better than anyone

One of the Broly theories that I’ve heard is that Broly is basically jealous. Both Goku and Broly are based on Sun Wukong from Journey to the West, Goku inheriting Wukong’s positive traits, his peaceful nature from the end of the story, and items, the power pole and the flying nimbus, while Broly inherited Wukong’s negative traits, Wukong’s rage, and items, the control headband. Also, while Goku, a weak, low class Saiyan received a peaceful life on earth, Broly, the strongest Saiyan(at that time) lived a life of pure suffering. And to top it all off Kakarot, that low class warrior with the insolence to cry over his circumstances, is now the only one who can rival Broly, and Broly can’t stand it.
Nah, that's just overexplaining my man Makes way more sense for Goku just to be a trigger for Broly's trauma, on top of his power driving him mad. Personally I don't think it needs to be any deeper than that
The only thing I disagree with is Yamcha. Bulma was often very jealous of Yamcha and called it cheating even when Yamcha could just help a girl or stand next to her, while Bulma actively tried to cheat on Yamcha many times, and it wasn't once, twice or three times. I remember three times where she actually wanted to sleep with another man and one time where she wanted a man only because of his name, until she saw his appearance. Yamcha was never shown as cheating or looking at another. Despite the fact that Bulma lied many times about Yamcha's cheating and actively tried to cheat on him herself.
@@gespenst1329 I understand why this happened, it's just in Bulma's nature to lie. She's just that kind of character and she's exaggerated and embellished things more than once. I'd even say it's cool that she's so imperfect.
Bulma can lie but Yamcha is so akward with women that I can't see him saying no when they approach him and show superfan level interest in him. Hell golddiggers would even pretend his awkwardness is cute
Piccolo MADE Gohan fight the saiyans and he wanted to go wish back his friends on Namek while Goku was out of commission. He felt responsible since he's also a warrior. Also Goku was 100% telling Gohan to go home and study, he and Krillin decided to come back and help him fight Vegeta. Any amount of training is just Gohan wanting to bond with his dad.
Gohan is a child so Goku as a father is still allowing him to go to the battles. Gohan should’ve never been allowed to go to Namek. Chi chi was against it. Goku didn’t stop it and then the cell thing.
@@GiveMeAReason2 Goku was dead and Gohan was kidnapped by Piccolo and forced to fight as a 4-5 year old. WHen they went to Namek they didn't know Frieza or Vegeta was going to be on Namek. In cell's case No one other than Gohan could beat Cell.
Doesn’t matter if they knew or not Goku should’ve never allowed Gohan to go to Namek if the first place 💀 he also had Gotenks and Gohan fighting buu which ended up being a mistake as well
I actually stopped watching dragon ball for almost 20 years, then rewatched it after my second child was born. This show hits so different after you become a parent.
Great video. Been watching DBZ since the 90's. My original opinion was Future Trunks was awesome. Now as I've gotten older. I can confirm that he was indeed awesome!
I completely agree at first I wasn't a fan of Chi Chi. But as I got older I realize she just want what's best for her son. Vegeta getting on Gohan for me was valid. Because it this point the planet is at risk. Gohan just defeat Cell where you would think Gohan would understand and learn to take things seriously. But instead Gohan is just playing around as well him slacking off on his training knowing good in well he needs to train to not only to stay stronger but to keep his planet safe from threats. I agree Vegeta development from the moment of his debut in DBZ to the end was the best. I was just disappointmented that his sacrifice against Buu was wasted. This is my first time hearing the Broly conspiracy. Every story is gonna have a plothole. As long as the story has more positive and negative. It all good. Writers aren't perfect. And sometimes when you try to write a story it 50/50 so there are gonna be some hit and miss. But anyway I hope you have a wonderful day. Stay safe, take care and stay amazing Lindoo.
Most fights take a day or a few and have years of peace in-between shoot the final chapters take place 10 years after Buu and there was nothing but peace and there was literally years between cell and Buu no one thought about Buu and even Vegeta stopped training for the longest time after cell defeat
In the Japanese dub of Broly, it was explained that he just felt gokus potential and it frightened him so bad that he got obsessed with him. Funny that his fear came to be true as he lost to goku in the end.
i think there was potential for a hella deep character motivation w Broly that they just totally bungled bc it was a movie plot... like, i think the idea was that he was intimidated by Goku's confidence and strong cry, despite being of low power level and low birth... meanwhile he's got all the power and higher status, but is too scared to make a peep... kinda reminds me of how a lil dog can chase a big dog away if it's just got the guts to confront it, bc the big dog isn't expecting it... idk there's so much cool commentary on class and hierarchies that could have been involved w his character, i feel like someone working on it was really tryna make it deep and it just got ruined somehow. funny how it ended up being kinda the epitome of what dbz haters thought the whole show was, all flashy form, muscles and powers, and no substance... don't get me wrong, i fuckin love that movie too, the animation is SOOOOO gorgeous, honestly peak for me. the music was tops too, i mean it's kinda butt rock nu metal stuff but you can't say it doesn't fit the content perfectly. and there's actually some good writing... Vegeta getting utterly fooled by Paragus appealing to his ego, and then just fucking collapsing into a stuttering mess when he witnesses real power, is fuckin GOLDEN, classic Vegeta getting shown up plot. and Broly had some good lines too!! like there's one part where Goku says somethin like 'hey, how about giving us a little mercy?!' in that tone where he's tryna be humorous, to deal with the fact that they're probably all about to be murdered by this psycho... and Broly responds 'is that another word for coffin?' in the most sinister voice as he just blastin them away... aaaaaahhh i don't care what anyone say, that movie was a DAMN good time
It's funny to me because that feels untrue based on how people grow in power. Like Goku has all this potential but only survives against Vegeta because of a technique he learned after dying And then surpasses Vegeta only for Vegeta to catch up to him then surpass him. Only for them to now be relatively equal.
@@mrhopadopalus a child can grow up to be a pro at something, and yes you usually get stronger when you train and learn new skills. Your point makes 0 sense.
@@KingShado69 my point is if Goku had so much potential, why did it take him dying and training harder than any Saiyan up to that point for him to even scratch the surface of an elite warrior (using Saiyan standards). It seems more like Goku doesn't have a crazy potential so much as he just did a lot of leg work (training) to be strong. Like broly was strong from the jump and his power kept rising due to his potential, while Goku who apparently has this crazy potential is fucking inching in power like a low interest housing loan.

The thing about gohan not training, I think it’s caused by people constantly telling him you have so much potential that it might have went around and made him cocky and lazy. At least that’s what happened to me and basketball
The broly one I heard that it was destiny and Broly sensed as a baby that Goku would be his end that's why he hated him the crying was an act of defiance

Dragon Ball is a feel good anime at the end of the day. I’m someone who loves the crap out of both super And GT. I love the whole damn franchise. First anime along with Naruto. I think there are too many people arguing about could “Goku beat ..” or the “Super vs GT”. They are just missing the point. It’s those we cherish at the end of the day that make us strong. It’s why I think the message of the final arc of each section after Piccolo Jr was showing that being the strongest means nothing with out those around you. It’s why I think Kid Buu, Omega Shenron, and Anime Jiren are some of the best versions of that message. Cause no matter how much I can bench press my family and friends is what’s giving me strength to stay in the fight(life).
yoooo i grew up with dragon ball z too and had a lot of the same feelings growing up. you still hear the "dbz has no plot" thing a lot nowadays and i think it can be such a disservice to all the cool shit the series actually does. i can go on forever about all the lore it has and not even touch the big stuff like saiyans because there is just so much there to take in and absorb, and my appreciation for dragon ball has deepened over time because of that. like yeah the canon gets overwritten and there are plot holes and shit doesn't make sense sometimes but at the end of the day it doesn't stop it from being a landmark series and it does a very good job of what it sets out to do
I still don't like Chi-chi. In regards to Yamcha, Toriyama threw him under the bus. At no point before the android saga is Yamcha shown or even implied to be a cheater (Bulma's past accusations of this were originally meant to be her simply being irrational). If anything, Bulma was consistently shown be a lot hornier than Yamcha. Seriously, if you told me one of these people cheated on the other, I would have to assume it was Bulma, always lusting over other men and barely keeping it in her pants. Then, she would have the nerve to get all bitchy when another woman paid Yamcha the slightest bit of attention. Yamcha is only the alleged cheater because Bulma was a major player in the android saga and you need the audience to like her. Even the dude's Japanese VA called Toriyama out on this.
Bulma was an active cheater to Yamcha and it's a disgrace that she called him a cheater. My boy literally oofed himself when he heard she did it with vegeta in the Trunk's timeline, that's how bad he gets treated.
Nah. Those theories for broly never maid sense to me because at the end of the day broly getting stabbed has everything to do with vegeta and his father but he’s more focused on goku being cry and even if you try to say the crying reminds him of that day the fact that the guy who looks exactly like the man that stabbed him doesn’t trigger him is some BS
broly was a newborn. newborns eyes are very undeveloped. on top of this, he can naturally sense ki. King Vegeta is dead, and not only that, our Vegeta doesn't have the same ki as his father did. You know who isn't dead? Goku. That's why Goku's ki is a trigger for Broly.
Awesome vid. You nailed it. Dbz hits a lot different after growing up and facing adversity. The buu saga was more about reprising the original sayain saga. Vegeta turning back to evil crushed me. His fight there woth goku was just brutal and so deep. His atonement and then finally accepting goku as a true friend and working together to defeat buu is sayain pride redefined. That thumbs up they share is just everything. Vegeta being too proud and angry to admit defeat against buu when goku was charging the spirit bomb was incredible. I feel that would have been a perfect time for him to go ssj3. I always got mad at gohan haters. His power comes when he needs it the most. He doesn't want to be a fighter, but when he's pushed too far, his power just explodes. Sure, he could and probably should train more, but his power can always just jump to where it needs to be. I could go on and on about all your other points but like i said you totally nailed it. Thank you.
About hercule your so right about this idk if this was said in the anime cause im a manga reader but piccolo says that despite Hercule being he still deserves the title champion of earth because of how he kept fighting cell and the role he played fighting buu
6:28 Bulma cheated on Yamcha first. Well, she tried to cheat, but General Blue wasn't wanting her. She was pretty irrational and was wanting other men out of her own insecurities about Yamcha having girl fans. That's probably one of the reasons Toriyama said he didn't like her in one of Q&As he did with fans in between chapters of the earlier manga volumes.
@@sonnywoods6846 Hell, and this may have been an anime or even DUB only thing, but I distinctly remember her lamenting that she didn't get with Goku while she was taking a bath on Namek.
Here's one I had as an adult now (currently at namek arch) when the last time i watched this was like 20 years ago. In the first episode, they explain that Goku hit his head, and that before that he was all angry and agressive, and afterward he forgot his brainwashing and became kind. As a kid I probably didnt understand what this ment. IRL there was a guy called phinius gage, (not sure on spelling) he got hit with a railway spike that went into his brain. After this happened his personality completely changed. What happened was his frontal lobe was damaged, which can cause changes to personality. This explains Goku mistaking king king kai and bubbles the monkey. It explains him slapping crotches in the orginal. He has TBI
4:12 The reason why android 16 was able to get Gohan to fight Cell wasn't because he died. But because Gohan and Him could relate to both of them preferring to be pacifists, 16 had to let him know that fighting for what's right is okay.
For East Asians (AKA target audiance for OG Dragonball) ChiChi really is just the stereotypical mom. She's the most real and relatable character of the bunch, the source of familiarity. But obviously she was perceived very differently from the Western audiance.
Another good thing about Hercule/Mr. Satan taking all the credit is that it keeps the attention away from Goku and the others. It is impressive how he's able to fool everyone, but then again it does seem like a lot of people (with some notable exceptions) seem to have forgotten when shooting Kamehameha Waves, Dodon Rays, and Spirit Balls were a thing back then. Though now that I think about it, were those tournaments televised? I kind of side of with the first theory about Broly. IIRC, he had his eyes shut and all he could hear was Goku crying. Then he gets picked up by his tail, which is extremely painful for saiyans, stabbed, then tossed aside to die with Paragus. I think he associates the pain he experienced with the crying. I do wonder alongside that power, is why he became so unstable. Considering Toriyama was writing and drawing Dragon Ball weekly for 11 years, I'd be honestly surprised if there wasn't any plot holes. Same goes for most mangaka who had to work in similar conditions. The manga industry is brutal. What we got from Toriyama, while not perfect, is still a fantastic series and I'm glad I grew up watching the series.
I just read a Q and A with Toriyama yesterday in the back pages of the manga where he said the story is simple, and that he came up with it all as he went! Without extensive planning, its really impressive he managed to nail a character arc like Vegeta's pride! While the story is simplistic, it does what it sets out to do, which is entertain people with humour, adventure, and martial arts action.
When I was younger, Ithought Chi Chi was just annoyingly angry, as I grew older and watched Dragonball, I realized that she was a stalker who was angry because the boy she arbitrarily fell in love with didn't conform to what she thought she could turn him into. At least she tried to train Goten once... until she gets freaks out when he went Super Saiyan. Tbh, the Ox King must've warped that woman. She made her bed and it's good when she finally accepts the "sleeping" conditions. In Vegeta's case, his rival received a seven-year all-expenses paid trip to the divine training camp, something had to level it out. Even then, the MF'er keeps on managing to bruteforce his way into new transformations without any "Power of Friendship" magic. He already had SS2 by the time Babadi got to him. It's almost like he secretly hid from Toriyama so he could make progress on the down-low. Hercules a human without the usual masters with a 180 power level, nuff said. Agree with the rest.
aight now in defense of the Yamcha thing, he cant talk to women. He is physically incapable of cheating on Bulma and it was always a weird reason for Bulma to leave him. And Broly's reason was never actually stated in the movie. No one says that the reason for hhis rage was Goku crying
Didn’t they wish his fear away ? After that he was fine talking to girls. Also they definitely did make it seem like it was because of the crying so of course people think that.
@@GiveMeAReason2 He eventually got over it yeah but even in Z (idk about Super) he's hesitant to fight or talk with women outside of the Z fighter friend group and its really hard for me to see him as a ladies man. At most a man who gets a lot of attention but not someone who reciprocates

Is the man not alowed to move on? Anyway the only time we hear about some woman its mentioned he has a gf in the cell saga (we never see her let alone know if its the so called Mistress that caused the break up, if hes such a womanizer... he has ony 1 gf) and when gohan apologized to yamcha about the necklace wish Yamcha goes on to say he was joking. If his joke was to hide he was cheating why in earth would he say he needed a neckalce for a gf in the first palce (plus no one responded negatively about his new gf). Then theres the interview Toriyama has i think during Super's early run where he states Yamcha is actually *still* afraid of girls, yes still. Not that the fear resurfaced, he aways still had the fear. its so bad he can't keep a job. And then just randomly brings up that Yamcha goes to visit Tien everytime he gets fired or something which like.... Aight... If Yamcha cheated i dont think it was a Mistress. To add to that going by how DB tends to work with couples, if Yamcha was such a womanizer and ladies man there'd be... tons of proof if you know what I mean. my issue with the yamcha cheating shit is the flip flop of it, either commit to the character assination or don't (and even if its not character assassination for Yamcha, it definitely is for Vegeta. theres a reason All 3 VAs were confused about this not just Furuya)
Whoever hated the buu saga has no reasonable taste it really expelled development from the villains the plot may have been the same compared to the last two sagas but their was a variety of arguable moments that can take anyone by storm.
9:38 theres another theory for brolys hatred that i like. Broly had an insane power level and gave off like a haki where all things weaker would be oppressed, like when frieza walks into a room. But goku having a low power level and lower pressure still cried out fighting against it unwavering. In his entire life of being oppressed by his people and his father the only one to not fear him was kakarot. Saiyans have perfect memories, the only reason why an infant goku wasnt evil was because he had a brain injury, so broly remembers everyone and the only one to consistently stand up to him and make him cry was kakarot. He is the legendary super saiyan the pinnacle of what it means to be a saiyan, the jesus of saiyans, a mythical being embodying all the pride and strength of a mighty warrior race that even the god of destruction didnt want around, and kakarot made him cry.
Saiyans were a power cult, they had might makes right engraved into their DNA, broly scared the king on a bloodline level. Vegeta, raditz, and nappa had a clear hierarchy vegeta and nappa didn't even care when raditz died and nappa followed what vegeta said. When nappa was useless vegeta threw him away. Vegeta was a high class warrior and kakarot was a pitiful low class wretch, he didn't deserve his respect and it was inconceivable that he could best him. When vegeta saw broly he gave up immediately feeling the same fear that his father felt. As any saiyan should in that situation. But not kakarot, not goku.
Funny thing abt the broly one, is that diehard og broly fans get on people's head in og vs new broly for not thinking that broly's anger is deeper than that and that he's a complex character, and that maybe could be the case, but the movie doesn't really help out with the portrayal of that lol.
On the note of Gohan and Chi chi, I feel like a lot of people who complain about their writing forget the fact that *Gohan* wants to be a scholar. Yes, it can be interpreted that he's just parroting Chi chi's words in the beginning of the show, but you can so clearly see his passion for his studies later on. And the entirety of the Android saga was centered around Gohan not wanting to fight. In the terrible apocalyptic future the Androids created, Gohan is a fighter because he has no other choice. In the peaceful world created by Cell and the Android's defeat, Gohan becomes a scholar as he always wanted from the very beginning. Chi Chi is just supporting Gohan in pursuing his dreams to the best of her ability, and rightfully gets mad at Goku for constantly trying to derail that. And on that note, this is also why Gohan seems like such a terrible father in Super Hero. He *does* have Goku's passion, it's just focused on his studies rather than training. He treats his studies the exact same way that Goku treats his training. It's kind of crazy how little the fandom actually tries to understand the show and its characters. So many people say they did Gohan dirty, but they really just want Gohan to be Goku, and we already have Goku.
You make a good point. Vegeta really is the only character in the Buu saga (aside from the Champ) coming out looking good. Goku holds back SSJ3, Gohan toys with Super Buu instead of killing him, Piccolo just stands around being scared, the human Z fighters are just set dressing. Well, Goten and Trunks also end up doing well, even despite their fumbling. But they’re literal children, so it’s still impressive what they accomplish.
Well in piccolo defense he was the only z fighter left that had to watch over trunks and gotten making sure they got their shit together. Everyone got their shit rocked by buu so there's no point for piccolo to throw his life as well
I didn't like how SSJ3 wasn't built up to either... I might sound picky, But when a transformation in Anime is introduced, I hope there's at least some build up to it (Sounds like too much huh? You can feel free to fry me however you want) Like SSJ Goku was built up throughout the Saiyan and Namek Sagas where the words "Legendary Super Saiyan" "The Legend" and "The Super Saiyan" keeps getting thrown around. Same with SSJ2 Gohan, Where the Saiyan, Namek, and Android/Cell sagas keeps hinting and stating about Gohan's true potential and also the word "A form BEYOND Super Saiyan" is mentioned. However, We don't get this build up for SSJ3...
Rewatching dbz rn after a few years and its crazy how different my perspective is now, Especially realizing how crazy the cell saga really was in writing, glad someone else had this same feeling.
Vegeta is a great character whose growth is amazing, but I don't really like the whole, "goodie goodie" Vegeta. I miss the old ruthless Vegeta. The guy who would have done anything to win and would just merk people. The guy who had at least some great feats like how he stole the Dragon Balls from Frieza right under his nose, and throwing sand in Zarbon's eyes and ripping off Android 19's arms and coercing Android 20/Dr. Gero into a retreat, things like that. I miss that Vegeta.
Bulma wasn’t wrong to leave Yamcha. She is an adult and should be with whoever wants to be with her, but it was a little shitty to do it when he was literally dead.
Chi-Chi threw hands with garlic junior's gang, pulled out the straps to fight the Saiyans, and even stepped to super Buu of all the villains to get turned into and egg and cracked. She the Goat
I think a lot of people are missing the point between Goku and Gohan’s relationship during the Cell Saga. Goku’s whole character arc in the Cell Saga was realizing that Gohan isn’t like him. Think about it, people complain that Gohan had a dangerous childhood but so did Goku. Goku fought an army, a trained assassin, watched his childhood best friend die, was forced to kill a demon king, and was left on his own after his only paternal figure died. People don’t seem to notice that Goku’s Super Saiyan transformation is literally a PTSD response from when he saw Krillin’s corpse in OG Dragon Ball. Goku had believed that Gohan could handle that same kind of life, the same way Goku did. Goku had believed that Gohan had the same love for fighting as he did and even believed that Gohan was going to be his successor. It wasn’t until the Cell fight that Goku realized that Gohan didn’t want the same things that he wanted.
I'm 34 and I recently rewatched DBZ. These are my considerations: -Although I understand Chichi's anger, she is too over the top. In several moments she just couldn't understand the urgency of the situation. Like, the world ending and she was like "I don't care". I still don't like her. -When I was younger, I hated that Gohan stopped training, but now as an adult I understand his motivations and it makes sense. He was 4 years old when he was thrown into the responsibility of saving the world. He only chose to go to Namek because he felt guilty Piccolo died for him. He only fought Cell because his father forced him to. He actually liked and preferred to study instead. Also, I appreciate him a lot more now that I'm older. -I've always been crazy for VegetaXBulma, but it really was an insane move on her part. Like, he was genocide! She was afraid of him for a long time and suddenly she is like "yeah, whatever, he is hot". -I actually still like the plot, although it's simple it has a lot of smart plot twists that makes the show interesting.
To go through the points in this and sorry for the essay lol. . 1. Chi-Chis was just a stronger personality than Goku within their household because they were both parenting Gohan, it's just that Ch-Chi moulded Gohan into a scholar and why not? Goku was the strongest man on earth and there was peace. They didn't know about any aliens. Goku was still technically stronger than Piccolo too (without the special beam canon). Which leads to 2. Gohan ALWAYS wanted to be a scholar. It's the first thing we learn about him, it's what Goku uses to get him to fight Cell and it's what he ended up becoming. Suffice ot say, that's his character. Every fight wasn't his doing, it was a necessity thing. He thought he was peacefully going to get the DBs on Namek and they happen to run into (at the time) the strongest beings in the universe. They had to fight to survive. Goku was the one that got Gohan to train for the androids AND the one that got him to go to the RoSaT. None of these were Gohans choices and he didn't even go to the Cell Games to fight. He thought Goku would have had it. Boo, he was recruited by Kaioshin and Kibito and then the planet was in danger so he had no choice. People that are salty the guy wants to live a normal life when there's peace don't understand his character. 3. Mr Satan is a fraud for taking credit for things but yep, he helped save the earth 3 times; Cell, getting Boo to stop killing and with the genki dama/moving Vegeta. Goku even said that he couldn't reach Gohan and the others in time so it was save Mr Satan and Dende or no one. 4. We actually never got confirmation from Bulma herself that Yamcha cheated. All she says in Z chapter 2 is "not after what HE did to me." So it's entirely possible she told Trunks that to make her seem like an angel lol. In OG DB Bulma actually started pushing Yamcha away very early just because girls liked him when she brought him to the city. Then she tried to cheat with anything under 30 constantly while they were still officially together. It might be that he took revenge or he just got tired of her constantly accusing him of something he didn't do. We never see Yamcha even remotely act disloyal in the manga but we see Bulma do it constantly. 5. Vegeta's pride is understandable. Is a prince, then has his entire race killed by the man that enslaves him, only has his strength to rely on and yet is constantly mocked by Dodoria, Zarbon and Freeza, despite doing the bulk of their work for them. It's like a nerd in the office who is the smartest one and people take advantage of them. One day they'll snap. Him eventually turning it around is great development like you said. His previous actions aren't excusable but his pride is. Especially after he regained the top spot....for a few days lol. 6. Genuinely....I think it was just the crying lol. Imagine you having a memory of the first person that ever hurt you. I guess it's semi plausible he equated the rest of what happened with the crying but he only SAW Goku. He clearly recognised him and that's what kicked it off so it's more than likely he just doesn't like Goku lol. Plus, like you said, it's extremely unclear if it's one of the theories and DB is one of the most streamlined, easy to understand animes and mangas of all time. It's all simple. 7. People saying DB has no plot when many big manga (the big 3 in particular) all take cues from DB is hilarious.
i hated Gohan being a nerd up until the newest movie where he discovered "Super Saiyants" and it was so stupid and funny to me that it immediately made me love Nerd Gohan
As a kid i fell off of dbz when i got caught up in high school and uni. But rewatching everything has given me q new appreciation and love for the db series.
Bruv. Soon as I saw the title of the video I Immediately thought of how bad we misunderstood Chi Chi as a fanbase. As an adult especially after watching the uncut Japanese Dub, I feel so bad for both Gohan and Chi Chi. The part that hurt the most to watch was seeing Gohan having to dig graves for several Adult and Children Namekians after Vegeta killed them. No 5 year old should be doing that. Not even gonna talk about all the other crap he went through that even war hardened military veterans wouldnt be able to handle. I'm glad Chi Chi was the first on your list.
My biggest realization as an adult is that goku isn’t a hero. He just likes to fight. The world saving is an after thought. The American dub overhypes his heroic deeds
My dad and I used to watch dragon ball together early in the mornings when I was a young child in the mid 90s. When dbz came out no matter where I was when it came time I'd go right home just to watch it. I could not miss an episode.
12:05 Goku’s blank expression and the awkward silence as he’s using 100% of his brain power to decide what to call Piccolo after his fusion with Kami kills me
My personal take on the Broly situation: Here is Broly, strongest at birth, follower to nobody, threat to the royalty of Planet Vegeta. Yet when Kakarott started to cry, he broke Broly's legendary will and made him cry as well. This is the trauma that broke Broly. The fact that he was influenced by another without even trying was devastating. Then to find out it was a low-level warrior on top of that. Hearing Goten's cry was a PTSD flashback and Broly feared the idea of it happening again. I'm also sure that Broly felt that his crying was the final reason he was murdered what led him down the road he went. So anything that reminded him of that triggered his anger and dominating personality.
When I work out I either listen to music or watch DBZ clips while doing cardio. And last night I came to the realization that I never felt “hype” or “hyped up” as a child before watching DBZ.
Now that I hear Chi Chi’s perspective, I see her as a much more relatable character. Thank you! Shit, better late than never for an adult realization for me!
