Walmart is our worst store. They have everything, and prevent having to make trips to different kinds of stores, but, that’s the only allure! The employees aren’t paid enough to care a whole lot. And, if you were in the south? No one hurries. Everyone just takes their time
And train stations often have bathrooms and water fountains that homeless people come to use. If they get refused? They still have to go to the bathroom and don’t get much choice in where. Restrooms are often for customers only so if you can’t afford to buy anything, your bodily functions are left to… well, disfunction

With numbers, you solve the problem of people with the same name, i.e., you don't have to give your surname, violating even more your privacy. It's perfect.
That cashier was not giving good customer service even by my American standards but it definitely is not uncommon to receive poor customer service here 😅😅😅
Walmart is pretty much slave-labor.... so workers do not go out of their way to help the customers at all. At my local Walmart stores, the workers actually seem to hate the customers. Which doesn't surprise me at all. America is dysfunctional now.
Worked at Walmart Canada for a while. Our pay was good since our minimum wage here is so high, but because of that, we were always extremely under-staffed. Your service would not be great, because the workers had so much to do already and were probably exhausted.
Lol am old lady fell asleep on my shoulder. It was so cute, but I felt horrible about having to get up. 😆 I tried to do it slowly so it wasn't so sudden but the woman dipped and suddenly woke up. 😆
Because they work 12 hours a day. So they are tired. So they sleep on the commuter trains. Which is why foreigners need to SHUT UP when they ride Japanese trains.
I always think sleeping while you commute is the largest benefit of public transit. My friends ask why I don't drive to work. I ask why they don't sleep to work?

It can smell like urine, especially during the summer months. I have quite a few stories, especially with my first visit. Lol. As far as the poop bags. I’ve seen them outside of dog parks. For example, in my neighbourhood, they have them scattered throughout. I believe it’s to encourage people to pickup after their dogs. My previous residence, there was a problem with people not picking up after the dogs. ☹️ So I’m sure you can imagine the unexpected presents people found on their shoes. But it did get better, once the bags were present and trash cans were available. Thanks for the fun/funny video. I haven’t been feeling 100% but this definitely made me feel better!!! I've been on a few AmTrac's myself, usually ok... but 1ce or 2ce the entire train car smelled like urine or barf. It was horrible. I just packed my stuff up and moved cars though, but... ugh.
In Germany, they scan your items and shove them to the side, then you pay for them and the cashier starts to scan the next customer. You now have about a minute to shove your stuff into a bag while also trying not to accidentally take the items of the next customer, since the cashier will just throw them on top of your stuff. If it takes too long, the cashier will sigh in order to make you go faster.
Yeah I wish there was a middle ground between the two. I remember that the cashier used to help bag at the same time so you would both finish fast and it would not be awkward. Now they are forced to be min max capitalist androids whilst paying customer immediately becomes an inconvenience over customer who has not paid, such irony!
I know right. cashiers in the Netherlands can also be crazy fast. Honestly I do like a little speed, but not everyone can pack as fast as these cashiers can scan.
@@blu3kawaii That's pretty typical of any culture or even person. You are almost always the most critical person about yourself/culture/etc. Which is sad, because then you tend to only see the things to complain about rather than the blessings that are there as well.
The pets inside planes may either be service or emotional support animals. Emotional support animals are on a case by case basis from airlines, but service animals are regulated by federal law much like infrastructure for people with disabilities like mobility impairments or blindness.
Oh that's very interesting! I think even in Japan, service animal may not be put in the plane with the person. But maybe the staff will take care of this person. Also, they can take train which is easier for them to!
You can take small dogs on the plan that are not service animals as long as they are in a carrier. My sister-in-law does it with her dogs occasionally. I think you may have to make special arrangements when booking though and also probably pay extra.
Yeah, they had to get stricter about that cause some people were just using the idea to avoid pet transport fees or cause they felt like it. So now everything's got to be certified and all.

WalMart is a pretty awful company who pay their workers as little as legally possible and don't treat them very well - a "graceful pace" is probably about the best you can hope for

Lets be honest. The reason walmart is cool is because you can go there at 3am, in a group, with everyone wearing pajamas, and still be better dressed than the rest of the customers.
The dog airplane thing really depends on the airline. Some airlines will require you to put the dog underneath in a cage in the cargo hold, and others are more lenient, and let you carry them on board in the cabin.
I wish we upgraded all our trains and railroads to be like in Japan. Then I may actually use them for distance traveling instead of my car. Of course then the cost would be 10x what it is now for a ticket. Looking forward to the Q/A for patreon subscribers! Tracks here in the state of Victoria of Australia are ridiculasly smooth. The amount of times I forgot that we were actually moving is off the charts. 😂
lol I was on the Amtrak and was chatting with an employee and he casually said "oh yeah we can't go faster than like 40 mph when it's hot outside or something will catch on fire"
If your Uber driver is tired, talking to them is actually a very good idea. Conversation helps a fatigued driver stay alert and not feel sleepy. As a former professional driver, I've experienced this first-hand.
Remember K-Mart? Near their end, there were two to four people working checkout lines. A total of up to four more worked everywhere else, and often switched positions. It was awful. IMO, K-Mart > Wal-Mart.
She does have a good voice for it, I hear it's really competitive in Japan(well everywhere I guess), but maybe an audio book on anything Japanese! Her English is perfect so I think it would be a good match!
You would be shocked by hungarian trains even more. :D The trains are old, not so confortable, slow, realy slow, late, late more, late even more. Some say our trains are slow to keep up the illusion of a "big country". (That's a historical joke.) :D We had Uber taxi until our taxi lobby earned to uber be banned.

My Grandpa is from Hungary, so I’m often there and I can confirm: Hungarian trains are very slowly, but german ones always try to do their best to be delay. 😅 And sorry for my bad English. @@noraaaaa1111 Sounds like a problem a lot of old train countries have. Apparently Shinkansen began in the 1960s, so they got all that nice new 60s tech from scratch, rather than uh... trying to, uh... retrofit new trains to an old system.

I’ve been watching a lot of vids on the topic of cultural differences between Japan and America and your vids are by far my favorite. Your energy is appealing and you have a fantastic sense of humor. I would watch your vids on subjects besides cultural differences.
When I go to Starbucks, I cycle through iconic names. Depending on my mood, I use names like: James T. Kirk, Flash Gordon, Luke Skywalker, Ming the Merciless, Darth Vader, Harry Potter, etc, etc, etc, etc.

Friend and I were brand new in Japan, decided to go to a restaurant. Went in. A couple of tough-looking guys (cooks) with big knives yelled at us. We hastily left. We later learned that they were saying "Irasshaimase" (Welcome) but we did not, at that time, associate yelling with welcoming.

(Spray cheese is definitely a weird thing) Also. I want a soy sauce spray bottle! Every time I pour soy sauce too much comes out. Pouring is fine for cooking, but to flavor my meal a nice quick spray would be ideal.

I’m really sorry you had to be in that Uber car, it must have been very scary! Amtrak is awful in a lot of ways. It's almost always very late and that's because most of the tracks are owned by private companies. Those companies will always prioritize trains moving products over Amtrak, so Amtrak is constantly delayed.
Oh yes! That's a great point! I watch a video of a man who take Amtrak from New Orleans to Texas. In on his trip, he said his train had to stop because cargo train was passing by. If that happened in Japan, people would freak out! But one time, I was on the train, and it had to stop because train hit a deer!
That explains why it took me 6 hours to arrive in Orlando from Miami years ago. I could have driven there in half the time. Haven't taken a train since then. This country desperately needs high speed rail
@@MrsEats By law, freight trains in America are supposed to give right of way to Amtrak passenger trains, but this isn't the first time I've heard complaints of freight trains refusing to comply. I'd rather take the train then fly within the US, personally. There's more room inside the train and the passengers are treated a little better, I think.
Regarding slow cashiers, I used to work at Target, and I don't know whether Target still does this, but cashiers at Target were graded on their speed on each transaction. Thankfully, the were really good at training their cashiers to scan and bag stuff efficiently. When I go to Safeway now, I prefer to use a self-checkout lane if I don't have much stuff to buy, but I'll usually at least help out by bagging my own groceries when I go through the regular checkout lanes if there isn't already a dedicated bagger. Regarding pee on the train platforms, honestly, the escalators at the BART station I used to use regularly in San Francisco were regularly "out of order" because of people peeing/pooping on them. Really disgusting, though you'll encounter pee and poop on the sidewalks in San Francisco regularly, anyway. I really don't like going into the city because of it. Regarding dogs on planes, I don't believe you're usually allowed to take dogs on planes, unless they're service animals. Unfortunately, many people lie about this to get their dogs on planes, and I'm unsure as to whether you need to provide any sort of proof to do so. I actually found your video footage of the woman on the plane kind of funny, as she almost looks nervous about being discovered or questioned, but maybe I'm reading too much into it.
Lol just commented on San Francisco /BART’s unique pee and poop problem. Homeless people just don’t care and people aren’t paid enough to care (plus just the culture in general is so different). Worst is during hot summers for sure.
@@GneissShorts A lot of people experiencing homelessness don't have very many choices when it comes to where they can do their business. Many (most?) passenger train stations in the US keep their bathrooms inside the gates so that you have to pay to get inside in order to use them. So it's not that they don't care, it's just that they don't have a lot of options. If the alternative is to drop trou in the street where everyone can see, it makes sense to pick some corner of a semi-public space that has at least a modicum of privacy.
@@SpaghettyLuvsU in relative privacy yes…but on the stairs leading up to the train, or ON the train?! It’s the homeless druggies (which I should have specified) that do that stuff. Homeless people that actually want to better their situation don’t do that stuff; they at least make an attempt to do it out of the way and in relative privacy. And the drug problem is what makes public bathrooms the double-edged sword in the US; just had a convo with a friend who talked with one of the waitresses at the Denny’s that used to be next to the local drug den (which burned and is now being put back together into a more decent hotel) that every 30 minutes she had to go check the bathrooms to make sure no one OD on heroin in the bathrooms.

I love your videos! Always quality and entertaining. Though your experiences in America are much different than mine, it goes to show how diverse the country is. Where I live in the midwest is always pretty chill, but then I don't pay attention to news either. Most dogs you see in public are probably service dogs. I would like to give a public announcement that if you see a service dog with their owner, DON'T interact with them. The dog is there for their owner's safety. For example maybe someone is prone to seizures so they have a trained service dog, if you interacted with them and distracted them the dog could miss a sign for a seizure. However, if you see a service dog alone and it approaches you it's probably looking for help for their owner and they want you to follow them.
I hope you both had a chance to visit other Walmart stores and saw that not everyone is that slow. Ok, so now I share with you, 8 amazing things at a Japanese market in the US! 1. You can get ice in a bag for free! Great for putting on top of you pr meat purchases, especially when you have to drive far from the market. 2. Bonito flakes! The Liquid Smoke (American brand name) of Japan. Ok, it’s not liquid, but it has a smoky flavor,...but there’s a hint of fish too. The first time you try it it’s weird, later you become addicted. You were warned! 3. Too much high fructose corn syrup in drinks. For some reason I thought Japan would be more health conscious, with its focus on offering quality products. I have to read labels on drinks and check sugar content. But there are still many great drink to buy! 4. Roasted tea drinks. I didn’t want to like them, but I like them more now. Am I turning Japanese?! 😊 5. Miso paste is great for making a fast soup base that is so delicious! 6. Cashiers are not slow! 7. Travel cups and bento lunch boxes! They are great for keeping you drinks and food hot/warm. Those magic cups are wonderful and I love the sections in my bento lunch box that separates the soup, main hot dish, and cold dish. 8. Rice, lots of rice! Ok we Americans might think that there is just to much rice, to many brands and what’s the big deal, but trust me that there is a reason for it. Too much to list here, but a big thank you to my Japanese language teacher. She taught me how to cook it, the best brand (so delicious), and what “”New Crop” means. I am now graduating to the huge sack! I don’t eat rice that much, but the small sack is always empty. 😁
Wow thank you for sharing your exciting things in Asian grocery store! Actually, I'm surprised at #1! In Japan, grocery store has free ice for customer to use to keep meat cold. You get a bag and get ice by yourself! But there is a sign that says "Do not put this ice in drinks"! Of course, Japanese don't do it, but it's scary to think what is in the water! Also you like rice very much!! Yes, rice is very delicious, especially new harvested rice! In Japan, you can find bag of rice that says 新米. It taste very good!! I recommend you try Japanese new harvest rice!

Pee smell, especially in the harsh summer heat, is one of the principal reason why I stopped taking the Montreal subway to go to work. That boomer who took it out and pissed in a corner definitely didn't help either...
Yes! I don't understand why many places in New York smell like pee! Maybe it's hard to find public toilet? In Japan it's very easy to find public toilet, even in big cities. Most of the time they are pretty clean, too! Is it the same in Canada?
@@MrsEats yes unfortunately. Outside of shopping centers and restaurants, punlic restrooms are hard to come by. Sadly I think it's motivated by the cost of employing people to clean them. Even some restaurants and bars won't allow non-clients to use their restrooms.
Ooo, that sounds as bad as Netherlands. When shops and restaurants were closed i didn't go to a larger city for months. Most cities got 3 options, restaurants, certain shop chains like Hema and trainstations.
@@rapthor666 obviously I can't talk for the entirety of Canada of course, but I know in Montreal it's like that. Then again, after hearing horror stories from friends working in restaurants you can sympathize with the staff. My best friend was night manager in a poorer neighborhood's Tim Horton for a couple of years and it sounded like clients almost aimed outside the toilet... I don't know why some people are so terrible in public restrooms over here... I try to do my business in private bathrooms unless I'm really desperate because of it...

You say it’s weird to be asked for your name at Starbucks, but other people I see who moved japan are shocked by how often a company will ask for allll your details for some one time use thing (like plastic wrapper at airport, they want your name, phone, address)
My first job after graduating in a university was in a japanese joint venture manufacturing plant. I learned a lot in regards to high regard with customer quality experience and efficiently running the operations. No wonder why in Japan many establishments are serving well their customers. Amtrak in the U.S. is kind of thought of as a last resort method for travel, behind flying or driving. I do wish we had a better passenger rail system, but it just hasn't made much sense financially for us to invest in one. And yes, the dog love is real! On hot summer days in Chicago, some local businesses even leave bowls of fresh water outside for passing dogs to drink from!
The train platforms smell like pee because people pee on them. Amtrack is terrible. I have an uncle who absolutely will not fly on a plane so when my parents went with him and his wife on a vacation from Texas to California they took Amtrack and said it was really slow (like they were always late), extremely expensive, the food ran out, and the toilets were overflowing. Greyhound busses are even worse though, last time I rode one some woman tried to start a fight with the driver and got arrested. Also she was with her kid who must have been 3 or 4 years old, great example to set haha. And then at a stop before that half the bus started shouting down the guy manning the station because Greyhound screwed up scheduling the next leg of the trip and they were acting like it was his fault. In the US you either want to fly or rent a car for travel. Train and bus both suck here. At Walmart I always use the self-checkout machines because the regular lines are so under staffed. They have like 18 registers at my local Walmart but only 2 of them will have a cashier working. But the self-checkouts move quickly. I'm rarely in line more than a couple of minutes even when the place is really busy.
Mrs. Eats you always entertain me. In my younger days in college I actually got a long quite well with all the foreign exchange students especially those from Japan and Korea. The cultures have always interested me, the exchange student from Japan was always nice to me, actually affectionate and gave me hugs when I showed I actually had sincere interest in his culture. It always meant a lot to me.
The beauty in America is the organized chaos lmao. In some weird way I love how unusual our behavior and mannerisms are even if at times it can be scary. It's like getting a rambunctious puppy. It's a different type of stress
I'm from the UK, went to New York a few years back, absolutely crazy place. The city literally never slows down or sleeps. 2PM, 2AM - same amount of traffic and people around..!
Bruh one time I got so high that I cried for four hours that my country didn’t have high speed rail.😭🤡🇺🇸 EDIT: As someone who traveled on Amtrak, I recommend to get bottled drinks for everything. If you go to sleeper class (private room) you can get mini champagne with plastic cups.

Your mindset when visiting the United States will make all the difference in terms of evaluating what you experience. For example, when going to Walmart, consider it like a Safari Park where you get close and personal to all sorts of strange and unusual animals in their natural habits. Passenger trains ought to be seen as relics from a by-gone age; distances are so great in America that trains stopped being viable means of transportation eighty years ago. Between the national highway system and cheap air travel, trains are like the human appendix; organs that serve no useful function any more. And as for American fascination for dogs; all I can say is that at least we are not as bad as the British... ;-)
Oh thank you! That is good way to think about it! Yes, I felt like trains in America were very old style. Japanese train is very advanced, so I felt like a little bit go back in time! But I enjoyed it very much! Also is Britain super dog friendly country? I love it!
@@MrsEats There have been efforts to introduce 新幹線 style trains in the USA, but cost, logistics, and culture make it, in my opinion, unfeasible on a large scale. Then again, I've heard that there is a line being built between Dallas and Houston. Will be interesting to see how it works out.
Trains actually still serve a purpose. They're mostly for cargo instead of passengers now. It's much quicker to get massive amounts of items from one point to another across land that way (say if you were to receive shipping crates from a cargo ship and they were to be transported elsewhere instead of unloaded immediately. They use the railway system). For trains that still carry passengers, I like to see it as mobile tourism across states. There's a whole thing for train tours with some lines where you get off at scheduled stops along the route, take pictures, get food etc. meet back up at a specified time and continue on. Like a land cruise.
@@kyokoyumi I grew up near a cargo train depot (I think? It had a turntable, etc.) in Georgia, USA. As a side effect, distant train noises can actually put me to sleep lol We would very occasionally see an extremely short (2-3 cars) Amtrak train roll through, but the rest were all cargo transport. It's an older area that hasn't been updated much, so the tracks mostly run parallel to the main thoroughfare and there are very few under- or overpasses. This meant that if there was a long train going by and you needed to cross the tracks, you had no choice but to wait, sometimes 10 minutes or more. Every once in a while, some idiot would try to beat the train across the tracks and get their shit ruined. The most spectacular one was a truck carrying big panes of plate glass. They cleaned up what they could, but there was a section of track that would sparkle in the sun for years afterward.
