ABOUT PAPADAKIS RACING:
The Papadakis Racing team began drifting in 2004 and is the most winning team in Formula Drift history, earning the 2015 title with driver Fredric Aasbo, as well as backto back championship titles with driver Tanner Foust in 2007 and 2008. The Rockstar Energy Drink / Nexen Tire Toyota Corolla Hatchback is the latest competition build from the Hawthorne, California, based team.
Team owner Stephan Papadakis is a legend of sport compact racing who began building his reputation in the 1990s with the first front-wheel drive, tube-chassis drag car in the U.S. The team earned multiple records and championships in the discipline, turning in elapsed times and trap speeds previously thought unattainable in front-drive drag cars. Papadakis' successes in front-wheel drive were matched by his efforts in rear-wheel drive when he campaigned a Honda Civic that became just the fifth car to join the NHRA's Sport Compact 200 MPH club.

If you haven't been to one of these races, I recommend you go see it at least once, its an experience. And when you bring a friend that knows, and tells you not to stand behind the car when it test fires in the pits, don't wine how you almost puked when you breathed the fumes in. And if that friend tells you to put your earplugs in and you say "its not that loud" after you saw the first burnout, don't cry like a little girl that your eardrums are bleeding after the first real run. ...... so i was told..... not me that did that....... oh, and don't look up for 20 sec after they burn out, whats tossed up must come down......

The motor is mounted solid with a 1/4" steel plate [4130 chrome moly]between the engine block and titanium bellhousing that has bolts at top and bottom frame rails. The front mount uses t-clamps not hose clamps and the reason is to allow for chassis flex without breaking mounts or frame rails.

@rolandtamaccio3285
@rolandtamaccio3285 5 лет назад
... the engine plate that bolts between the bellhousing and the block is bolted in so securely that it's just about a chassis structure, and those forward clamps don't have all that much load on them .
@alexkenison
@alexkenison 5 лет назад
The rear end is bolted to the chassis. There is a hydraulic ram that applies pressure to the clutch pack on timers, that whole assembly is bolted to the rear end. The clutch bell housing is bolted to that assembly and the bell housing is bolted to the block. Essentially the engine and rear end are bolted solid together and the hose clamps just hold the engine in place while all that other stuff is out being serviced.

I've been watching drag racing for close to 40 years and I wasn't aware of the hose clamps holding the nitro engines down. I guess that's one reason why it's possible for these guys to replace an entire engine in a half hour or less. I've learned something new today. Thanks!!! For anyone who hasn't seen it, I highly recommend walking back into the pits between rounds of a national event and watching one of the nitro teams tear the engine down to the engine block, build it back up, and start it.. all in about a half hour. It is quite impressive!

He barely scratched the surface. The big names in NHRA have entire WAREHOUSES dedicated to research and development of everything on those cars. Forrest actually made a comment a year or so ago about how him and a few other guys have the technology to go even faster, but NHRA is starting to get cold feet and are slowing them down. Most tracks arnt long enough to handle the power they have mk ow so top fuel doesnt do 1/4 mile anymore, they were going to fast and running out of track.

I think they start out at a high ratio and eventually fully lock to a 1:1 ratio with the engine putting all 10,000 horses to the track, this does not happen till the end of the run. I could be wrong but i thats what i was told.
@OGDACMAN86

I watched a video on those clutches and the reason yhey rebuild everytime is because they get so hot and so much pressure they literally melt and weld themselves together. Thats a lot of power and pressure.
@AWSmith1955
@AWSmith1955 5 лет назад
I can tell you an alcohol cars wears off a total of .120 of an inch on the burnout alone. And that is a much simpler single stage triple disk pedal clutch. Top fuel cars have no clutch pedal. Its all centrifugal counterweight and a cannon that allows differing sets of weighted fingers to engage the clutch.

Good video! Btw, those rent actually hose clamps, they are aerospace clamps (I work at the place where they are made). WAY stronger than hose clamps. Notice the clamping mechanics, in a hose clamp they use screw threads engaging slots on the band. That would result in a weaker band. These are actually pulling against a trunnion that is spot welded into a loop on the band. The other side has a lug and a locknut to tighten. Pretty slick application. Ive never noticed this until your video. Thanks for sharing!

NHRA Rule Book Section 21 4:12 Wheelbase Minimum 85 inches unless OEM was less and vehicle is equipped with OEM engine and drivetrain. Maximum wheelbase variation from left to right is 1 inch unless otherwise noted in Class Requirements In the class I run very few cars run stagger because it slows down reaction times. Classes with full suspension like Pro Mod, Pro Stock and Top Sportsman they don’t always have the rear axle straight in the chassis. It’s called rear steer so they need to allow some wheelbase difference. NHRA does check wheelbase at tech inspection for some classes

I'm actually really relieved and proud that you got all the information correct. Most people really do not understand what goes on behind the scenes on these cars. Good work on researching these topics. I really hope everyone goes to at least one race in their lifetime. Nothing else like it!

If you go to large NHRA event, if you are lucky and they have a show and tell in the pits called Nitro School, make every attempt to see it. They take about an hour, they bring different crew members/tech staff up and they go over the in's and outs of TOP Fuel Racing. It is truly mind blowing. I have seen it at the U.S. Nationals, several times, and I loved it. I wish it was on video, so I could watch it over and over.

I had the pleasure of "helping" a funny car crew when I was about 16... What I remember vividly - Changing oil out through a bung in the chassis (still not sure how that works, to be honest) , being the guy with hands small enough to fish a dropped bolt out of the clutch housing, and the exhaust being really harsh.... Would love to do it again.

What a great track day! The pits are always so fun at those events. The people are awesome and everyone there loves what they do! The top fuel tech is crazy... the shrinking of the connecting rods, all the measuring done run to run..., the methodologies the use for tuning are so simple yet crazy advanced, and pro street... banging gears is amazing! There is always something to learn in the pits. Dude, I'm a yt newb for editing... your videos... top shelf! One day... I'll get there! I really enjoy the technical aspect of your channel. The tech on some of those cars... always gives me ridiculous ideas for builds!

I remember the story from John Force about the good natured ribbing from a NASCAR driver about how many miles each driver ran during a season. When John Force said, "Oh, about 25 miles." The NASCAR driver chuckled. Then Force lifts up his shirt to show massive bruising from the safety harness. 5-6G at launch-maybe more at shutdown.
