To be fair B.D. Wong had a lot of his scenes cut out and his character was much more important in the book.

CG effects are way overused today. Practical effects should be used wherever they can be, with CG there to fill in the gaps. No matter how good CG can be made to look, too often it comes across as awkward. Of course, there are some huge exceptions to that, but let's be honest, that's all Andy Serkis.

"Should be"? Why "should"? Good CG is good, bad CG is bad. Good animatronics are good, bad animatronics are bad. I don't get this huge boner people have for animatronics. Having them there for the sake of being animatronics is just for nostalgia points. Say the CG is bad in recent years, and then look at the animatronics of old Star Wars movies for example. Looked great back then, terribly hideous today.

I think practical effects are a little better, especially puppetry, like the porgs (some of their shots) in Star Wars. Come to think of it, Titanic is one of the best examples of a perfect blend between CGI and practical effects.

There's one Easter egg you missed. In The Lost World, when the Rex walks past the basketball net in San Diego, he makes a motion with his hand. It's been interpreted two ways. Rex making a dribbling motion (as per basketball) and/or right before he does that, he cocks his head to the right and scratches his ear, referencing the Rex from King Kong.

fwwaller It's NOT incredibly stupid. People have weird dreams and nightmares all the time. That was the point of including it. the special effects in the first one are somehow more convincing/entertaining than the newest one. I think the movie industries got a bit obsessed with cgi over the last 20 years, but hopefully movies like mad max and star wars can change that.

***** Actually, even in budget they are usually, it's just the ease of not having to create them is what makes studios go toward CGI nowadays. Its unfortunate that they take that route, but I guess it saves a bit on time put into pre-production if you just let the guys in post take care of it.
@Elifesound
@Elifesound 9 лет назад
Not in every way. There is no possible way an animatronic T-Rex could run across a field in harsh day light and look as smooth as a CGI one. There's just way too much articulation! Don't get me wrong tho..I love animatronics! But there are so many organic things that animatronics just can't pull off and look convincing.
@hena89

@stevesteve160
@stevesteve160 9 лет назад
***** There's a LOT that animatronics simply can't do. If you tried - even with the top experts - a lot of great scenes from modern movies would look horribly fake with animatronics. If used wisely, CGI is a great artistic tool with far more utility than animatronics. Also, animatronics are much less expensive than CGI. Putting CGI effects into a movie is extremely expensive. All of the most expensive movies of all-time (even when adjusting for inflation) are CGI-heavy ones.
@JeremyJamesPrutchick
@JeremyJamesPrutchick 9 лет назад
I think the original effects will always stand the test of time. There was a fair balance of animatronics and CG. Since they used animatronics in a lot of scenes, the actors were actually interacting with something as opposed to standing in front of a green screen, where its just not the same. Take the Raptor in the Shed scene. It was actually there and everyone knew it and it jump scared me when I first saw it! I don't mind CG if its done right, but there's something about animatronics that CG can't match. Even though the scene where we see the Brachiosaurus was CG, it looked very real as if it was there.
@SalvableRuin
@SalvableRuin 9 лет назад
Jeremy James Prutchick You realize how silly your comment is? 1. CG can't match animatronics. 2. The scene with the brachiosaurus was CG and looked very real as if it was there. So... you are saying CG CAN match animatronics...
@JeremyJamesPrutchick
@JeremyJamesPrutchick 9 лет назад
뿡뿡! ^__^ Let me rephrase that. I'm saying that CG can't always top animatronics, but CG can still come pretty close if its done right. Animatronics have that sense of interaction between actors and the animatronic. CG doesn't have that as much. When CG is done right, it can still look real as if it is there but it still doesn't top animatronics in that sense of interaction. The CG scene with the Brachiosaurus is a hell of a lot better than the CG from something ridiculous like Sharknado. The Brachio may have been CG, but the CG was done right and it felt as if it was there. When you watch Sharknado you know its CG and it looks terrible.

Here’s something worth thinking about regarding the “Plausibility” of Jurassic Park. But first, just a little of my backstory. While attending college, during a class of Anatomy & Physiology, I was discussing with another student how cool the movie was. Okay, I’m an old fart! : ) Moving along. Our prof heard us and said to us, “Do you know why that story couldn’t happen?” My being one of the top two in the class might have been disappointing to her when I said, “No.” She probably wept for the future. Nevertheless, she said, “It could never be because they were using DNA from blood. Red blood cells have no nucleus and therefore NO DNA!” Years later I did a little research into the percentage of white blood cells to red. The numbers are staggeringly scarce for white blood cells. (White blood cells do have a nucleus but the white blood cells are very few compared to red.) So, forget DNA degrading over time, forget mosquito digestive juices - the tiny mosquito tummy and the odds of finding a viable nucleus would be astronomical. This is not hidden information. The reason I say this is, allegedly there have been some “scientists” considering this idea as plausible. And the MOST interesting part of this story is, the scam these “scientists” considered pulling on the public while knowing the true DNA availability. Keep your eyes open. There’s some weird stuff out there! Amanda Joyce 🎀

Something doesn't qualify as a 'reboot' just because of different characters. Even the director considers it a sequel, because that's what it is, a direct sequel to the original. 'Soft reboot' is just a ridiculous Hollywood term that is trendy but doesn't actually mean anything.
@KRSsven
@KRSsven 6 лет назад
Utter bullshit. The term didn't even exist as applied to films until very recently. Predator 2 had different characters a significant amount of time later, as did the later sequel Predators. Neither are anything but direct sequels. Christoper Nolan's Batman series was a reboot. 'Soft reboot' is just Hollywood jargon for 'we want to cash in while insisting 'no, this is new!'' even when it's not. Thankfully I tend to believe a director when he says things like 'this film is a direct sequel'. But then I'm sure in today's 'all fucking opinions are valid' postmodern society even that will be interpreted as an opinion. It's not.

I don't think JP3 gets enough credit. If anything, it was a fun way to waste 90 minutes with some memorable scenes strewn about. Before you yell "BUT MUH REX", the Tyrannosaur is still the best dinosaur on either Sorna or Nublar, but the Spinosaur, (at least in the JP canon ), is the stronger predator of the two. The movie also looked really good, with set design being impeccable while giving some insight into what went into InGen's work on Sorna, (albeit fucking with us kn the island's geography). Also: ALAN.

Clever writing in making Jurassic World a direct sequel to the original movie. This would make JP3 a direct sequel to LW. The cannon lines up. Both LW and JP3 took place on Isla Sorna and JP and JW took place on Isla Nublar. Neither storylines ever have to acknowledge each other. That being said, Jurassic Park helped to update the image of the tyrannosaurus rex. In the past, every major cinematic piece dealing with T-rex often depicted it as standing upright and dragging its tail behind it; some sort of tri-pod stance. (Land Before Time, Fantasia, King Kong, even We're Back A Dinosaur's Story). In Jurassic Park, the T-rex is shown more accurately standing and moving in a purely bipedal stance. The massive legs and thighs of the t-rex helped pivot its body, while its long, heavy tail remained mid-air counter balancing its massive 5ft long head. T-rex also had binocular vision, or frontward facing eyes. This is a more subtle detail, but one that Jurassic Park captures in many of its close-ups of t-rex. One of the things they sensationalized though, is the size of t-rex. Its far too big in the movie. T-Rex's have about the same mass as an elephant, spread over a frame that's 12-15ft tall and approximately 40ft long. The specimen in the movie was closer to 20ft tall. To put this into perspective, it would've been about as big as the Spinosaurus from JP3.

The last action movie I can think of that used "old school" special effects was Underworld - which actually turned out really well. I think a lot of movie makers today underestimate just how much you can do without CG - though obviously CG has opened doors to scenes that simply would not have been possible 22 years ago.

I'm with the Nostalgia Critic on Jurassic Park 3. It didn't seem to take itself as seriously as The Lost World, so it kind of gets a free pass. It was not that great of a movie, but the Lost World kind of sucked and it expected to be good. I think the Lost World could have been a great movie, had the focus been on Pete Postletwaithe's character instead of Jeff Goldbum and Julianne Moore (both of them absolutely destroy this film) Vince Vaughn was surprisingly tolerable; although his character was the whole reason so many people died. So, if they focused on the hunters and their struggle on the island, it could have been cool. There's a deleted scene where Pete is in Mombassa, being the kickass hunter he is, when his friend comes to him to say that there's a place called Isla Sorna where dinosaurs are and he can go bag a Tyrannosaurus. During this scene, he's shown to be a tremendous badass, beating the ever living shit out of a man that can't keep his hands off a waitress (with his hand tied behind his back). If the film was about Roland Tembo, it would have been pretty cool.

That said, Jurassic Park was done so beautifully that I really wish people making films now would pay closer attention to details. A lot of catch you off guard scenes...... a See it twice twist to make sure you conceived it right.... Great Character build up till the last breath.... Makes you Laugh Scream Cry and pee yourself.... equally balanced, making sure there wasn't too much of this or too much of that... Great scene Orchestration as well as Audio and Visual enhancement, If you thought you seen a Jurassic Park Movie, than you are mistaken... because you have only seen the tip of the ice burg...... That's not true. Behind the Scenes feature on the DVD shows that Steven Spielberg personally made storyboards for each & every shot that he worked from. You can see drawings of the shot before it was ever filmed. Also, while there was a hurricane on Hawaii while they filmed, it lasted about a day and they didn't do any filming that day. The rain in the movie was created on a sound stage.

Dillon Smith Personally, I haven't seen it. But being closer to the source material doesn't mean it's instantly good. Some books don't work well as movies; maybe the plot wasn't as good in the book, etc. The book/source material isn't always better than the adaptation.

hmm, I do see your point (hunger games taken as an example here), but I think that both the book and the movie had an excellent plot, along with a great sense of suspense present in the series as a whole. I think that lost world was a fantastic squeal, but 90% of the community disagrees here.
@batman88891

@JLDReactions 6 лет назад
@TheFlash Not to sound arrogant but that's because you're probably young and can't make the distinction. Younger people are so used to seeing overused CGI that it has warped their brains. They have a harder time making a distinction. The dinosaurs in Jurassic Park were much better because they mixed in animatronics to trick the brain. When there is too much CGI, the brain recognizes it as fake.
@abrahamnovelo3413
@abrahamnovelo3413 6 лет назад
@Joshua You do realize that most movies use CGI nowadays, right? Not even for just the action but for shots of cars and streets and pretty much everything in the background. CGI has gotten way better than most people, including you, realize. It's hard to create a dinosaur on a computer and make it look completely authentic. Even in Jurassic Park you can tell which shots are CGI. The only reason it doesn't look bad to you is because you're immersed in the movie. The CGI still looks good but, just like the CGI for every other movie, you could see it if you really wanted to. And by the way, it does sound arrogant to say that "younger people" can't see "the distinction". Also, I don't understand what you mean by "they mixed in animatronics to trick the brain". If you could explain what exactly you mean by them mixing them.

Why did every one hate JP3 so much? It put Spino in the Publics eye.......EXACTLY WHAT ARCHEOLOGIST (Shromer?)WHO FOUND THE BONES WANTED! But the only known complete bones were destroyed in a bombing run during WW2. Only recently was a semi complete Spino was discovered! Guess what, it was HUGE, probably spent most of it's time on 4 legs, and was most likely a river specialist fish eater! Look up PBS's Special, Bigger the T-Rex. Looking at Shromer's (?) dreams, how WW2 not only destroyed all his discoveries AND killed 2 of his 3 sons(he was anti Nazi and paid for it) you can't help but feel bad for him. It was his dream for Spino to overtake T-Rex in terms of being a house hold name. Steven Spielberg for filled that decease paleontologists dreams thru JP3. When Steven passes away, I bet Shromer(?) will be there at the pearly gates waiting to give him a giant hug of thanks. Heck, when they discovered the recent set of Spino bones I bet Shromer's (?) spirit was there crying tears of joy. His biggest discovery, lost, was found again. And it was bigger then the T-Rex. RIP Shromer (?). You lost so much during WW2. All your discoveries, even your own children. You almost faded into oblivian. But now, everyone knows what a Spinosaurous is. Just what you wanted!

I am surprised that a certain fact did not make it into this list. So I don't know if you decided to not put it in for some reason, or simply didn't know about it but here it is; There are no Velociraptors in ANY of the Jurassic Park movies. Now before you say "You idiot of course there are." Let me explain, the raptors in the Jurassic Park are actually based off of Utahraptors which hold the title: Biggest raptor in the world. They can grow almost as long as a fully grown Carnotaurus while Velociraptors are actually 2 foot tall itty bitty little things that weigh less than most dogs, and would probably get their butts whooped by one.
