Thanks for tuning in! I have been collecting hardwoods for the past several months to make a batch of cutting boards before the holidays. However, I wanted to put a different slant (get it?) on the typical cutting board. Here are 7 things I learned along the way as well as a bunch of other tips and tricks and some things to avoid. Hope you enjoy!

Great video, but I would add another tip when using pipe clamps. I use them too and I have learned that if you put a strip of painters tape on the pipe under the project you are going to clamp up it keeps glue from getting spots all over the pipe that after it hardens it prevents you from sliding the clamp up and down the pipe. This tip has saved me lots of frustration and I don’t have to scrape the pipe off anymore.

Your Waste Strips to Avoid Snipe are great and the best of several good tips ! I've been using this technique for many years and I call them outriggers, eh !

On some of my parallel boards, I leave the center two middle boards or the two outside boards longer to take care of the snipe Works great and allows me to make my boards a little wider. I have a 13" planer too. I like most of my boards to be 12.5" finished to take care of the snipe. On end grain boards I glue scrap wood on the leading and trailing edge and run them through my planer. That protects the board from any chip out and then I cut off the scrap. I have not had any problems with the 150 + boards I have made. Great video! Nice boards! Thanks!

Very nice! Try beveling that rear edge a bit before sending it through the planer to avoid the chip out that occurred. I've had great success with that little technique.

Interesting,, and several great tips not seen in other videos. One thing struck me watching you cut the first board…I thought of leaving the one side uncut, only with the edges in a single line, that would look dramatic and the ‘toothed’ edge still practical as a finger hold. When I get around to trying a board pattern like these I’ll try that.

I think the longest ends of the board wouldn’t let me get it in the sled correctly. Like it was too big. I have since gotten a track saw which is much better for that cut.

very cool. question about the thin strips. Are they face grain? Are all your pieces face grain to face grain? I am confused about putting face grain to edge on cutting boards. is that ok over time? I know not to ever mix end grain with face or edge but I can't get a definitive answer on face to edge glue ups. both long grain so should be ok?? anyway your boards are beautiful and definitely going to try one.
@RLLWoodworks
@RLLWoodworks Год назад
Thanks so much! I tried to do mostly edge to edge but I did have a few face to edge and haven't had any issues. Especially if they are thin and you use a good glue (I used Titebond III). Good luck! They are fun to make.

Just checked your boards out on Etsy and you are way under valuing your product. You should at least be at $120 if not more. Probably more because not a lot of people are making that type of board.

Ha I think so too! I had them at $200 for a while but they weren’t getting much traction so now just trying to get rid of them. I think being able to customize is needed.
