Ground rules for my channel: On my RU-vid channel, I have zero tolerance for disrespect. The book community is one of the nicest, kindest, most open communities possible. Personally, I really enjoy finding people who read the same book that I read and feel the complete opposite of how I feel (maybe I missed something, maybe the other side has a valid point, maybe I can learn something). However, I am respectful. I still like people's videos that I disagree with. But anyone who is personally attacking another person, I'm out. I ban those folks from my channel. Hate has no home on my channel. (Examples of personal attacks: You are an inattentive reader, you have no imagination, you don't know how to think, making negative comments about how a person looks. This list is not all inclusive.)

One tip I would add... read it again. I appreciated it a lot more a second time, picking up on some of the foreshadowing and actions of minor characters that you don't realize are relevant the first time around.

Was just about to say this. It's funny that she mentions things like how hard it is to keep track of who is talking. I remember that being a big problem for me on first read but on rereading is not a problem at all. I almost was thinking was there something wrong with me the first time I read it what's hard? So yes, it is a book you must reread and you'll start picking up on the themes that you totally miss the first time. Also, what makes it great on the 2nd read is you understand that there are things that just aren't important to know. Herbert doesn't spell everything out and that is by design. You'll appreciate that more on subsequent reads. I remember being super annoyed the first time when he described a fight scene in the most passing words seemingly possible. Then when you read it again you realize that's be design and his style.

I haven’t finished a book in years, I always struggle with keeping characters and plot lines straight, and I especially struggle with inferring tone from text… plus, I’ve never ever read sci-fi. On paper, Dune should be my nightmare. Bought it on a whim because I’m a huge Villeneuve fan, I’m currently about 50 pages in and I’m obsessed. I actually get excited to sit down and read. I thought my imagination had long been dried up but the pages really come to life in my head. Even when I’m not reading, I’m visualizing the world in the middle of my everyday life. Thank you for sharing these tips so others and myself can get the most out of this enchanting book!

I hated reading before reading Dune... but when I started this book I ended it in no time and run to my book store to buy the rest of the saga... and when I arrived at the end of it and understood that there would be no more as the author died... I felt empty. I tried to fill this emptiness with a lot of books, hundreds of them by now, in vain, so I read Dune again and again from time to time ^^

I recommend the RU-vid channel "Quinns Ideas" This man has an excellent overview on the Dune saga. I've heard about Dune practically my whole life. The 1st book published in '65. Same as me. I carried the 1st 2 books to my 79 year old mom today for her to enjoy them. I'm right in the middle of Children, book 3. It's a story that definitely requires some digestion. For me, anyway. Happy reading!

The Dune audio books are pretty strong. I've read it many many times. Over quarantine I started hiking and listening to audio books. I knew the story and understood the nuances of Dune quite well. I thought a Dune audiobook would be a good passive entertainment while on my journey. I was wrong. I found myself buried in imagination. Some how the spoken word struck like thunderous church bell. I went back and read the physical book and it was even better. Great perspective Lisa... Only recommendation is to work on your mic audio quality.

It would also help to take notes. I know its a bit time consuming but it really helped me keep track of the characters, character motivations, events. I wrote down questions like "why is this person doing this?". It's a bit like being back in my literature class but about the half way point I just naturally picked up on the story.

Fantasy is hard for me because I am not a visual person at all. When I read LOTR, I just couldn't imagine the characters or the world which is probably one of the reasons that I found it such a chore to read. At least Dune has a movie trailer so I could see some of the characters and have more than a blank canvas to work from (and thus made the book more enjoyable to read). Thanks for watching and thanks for your video on Dune! It is such a great book!

As far as pronouncing words correctly. When all parties learned the words by reading them you will find differents schools on how to pronounce them. Some dont even like how Frank Herbert himself pronounced them. As a spanish speaker, any word I read that I dont understand how to say in english right away i will read it in spanish. It is always fun thing to talk about when discussing the books.

I love this book and re-read it every couple of years. The first copy I read I got from my Junior High library, I would have been 13 or 14, around the same age as Paul. At that young age I was used to knowing nothing so I was not surprised that I didn’t initially understand what was going on so I just kept reading confident that I would learn as the story progressed. I remember being blown away by the time scale and the richness of the story’s cultural history. It’s a fabulous series.

Your tips are well thought out. You have compassion for the reader and appreciate the effort it takes to enjoy/read the book. My tip is to reduce the plot to its lowest terms so no one is lost. Imagine most of the people on Earth are addicted to a drug only found in the Sahara and all nations are fighting for their share. Desert guerrillas control it and in the middle of this struggle a genetically-engineered messiah shows up early and tips over everything. Ta-da. (Expand this to the size of the galaxy and you see why multiple books are needed._ Enjoy)

Hi ! Just a question that's bothering me.. Should we read all 6 books to get the whole plot. Is it like we should read all Harry Potter's 8 books to complete the series? And is the movie released in 2020 gonna adapt all 6 books? Idk anything about the book and I'm really excited to read it. But this question is bothering me a lot and I just wanted to know some thoughts about it. Would be great if shed some light on it! Thank you!!

One of the things that I have noticed is that I have an extremely difficult time imagining the things that the author describes. If you put out 3 dominos and ask me to memorize their location and I study the dominos for a few minutes and remove them, I could not tell you where to put the dominos - I have a very difficult time with visualizing space. A few pictures or video clips go a very long way with me!

That first chapter can really be brutal... but it's actually what drew me in. That first chapter conveys this idea of a completely fleshed out world with eons of history behind it's religions, politics, planets, languages... and that idea always excites me. And Dune did not disappoint in that regard at all. It has long been tied with Lord of the Rings for my favorite series of books. They are both considered the grandfathers of their genres. And both excel at world building. Dune just chucks you into the deep end and laughs at you while you try to learn how to swim. :Dz As to the prequel... there are 3 trilogies that make up the prequel... so 9 books there, plus the 6 of dune. Plus there are a book each for the schools of dune. Plus there are more books. :D

@@dharunbharathis3597 So, movie 1 covers about the 1st half of book 1. Movie 2 will cover the 2nd half. And movie 3 will cover book 2 (it's a pretty short book). There is an underlying theme to those 2 books (3 films) that ties up nicely. However, the story does continue on past book 2 in a very fluid and connected way. All 6 books are incredible reads and by the end you feel like you've lived in this universe for thousands of years. Countless worlds, peoples, cultures, customs, religions, etc. All tied together beautifully. I always recommend reading them. And after that you can read the books written by Brian Herbert from Frank's notes. Details going back that show the start of the feud between the houses, the start of the great schools (Navigators, Mentats, Sisterhood). You get Duncan's backstory and so much more. I promise, they are all great reads.

First time readers should accept that it could be an awkward read for them. That’s to be expected. It’s a fantasy story set 20,000 years in a space-faring future. They shouldn’t be to hard on themselves. Some of the words and concepts introduced early will be explained overtime… some concepts aren’t explained at all… Dune has a lot of supplementary history that isn’t explained in the story, but is discussed in the appendices that follow the novel. I can definitely see why some people think A Song of Ice and Fire was inspired by this book.

Tip #4 is the one that helped me tremendously! If you're copy of Dune doesn't have the appendixes or doesn't have the terminology, Google it and keep that tab open at all times. Refer to it immediately when you come across a new term. This will save you time and frustration because you will know what is going on and you will enjoy the read because you will be enlightened by the purpose and depth.

The reunion between the Baron, his cousin, and Piter IS the responsible for making a lot of people drop it, I'm sure I remember I read the epub, and the first time I run through all that politicial drama on this reunion, I HAD to look for a picture of the planets and universe. It’s important to note, voice actors don’t always know how to pronounce the words either. Roy Dotrice mispronounced Brienne’s name all through A Song of Ice and Fire (GoT) and it bothered me every time.
@alesslessless
@alesslessless Год назад
Also pro tip: if you like a particular pronunciation for smth, but you’re worried it’s “wrong” or ppl will feel you’re silly for it, you really don’t need to worry about that tbh. While there are the ways that Frank Herbert “officially” pronounced them, he didn’t really care, and also basically every Dune Fan has their own preference about it. If anything, that’s kinda part of the fun about talking to other Dune Fans honestly. Also whatever you do, do not read any of the books that aren’t written by Frank Herbert. The Brian Herbert prequels/sequels/miscellanea are so much worse
@alesslessless
@alesslessless Год назад
Oh and less a tip but more a warning: God Emperor of Dune, like. Definitely read it if you think you can get through it but understand that like. If you’re at the level where reading the first book has become manageable for you, God Emperor will be as overwhelming and confusing as your first readthrough of Dune was. And if you’re not at that level yet… it’s going to be tough. It is basically hundreds of pages of an omniscient worm god person just talking about philosophy and human nature and history nonstop but in an extremely “Dune Way”. There is also essentially none of the action or pacing that kept the earlier ones moving. Also some weird homophobia in one section, and a woman literally straight up nuts just from seeing a guy climb a cliff. Extremely worth it tho
