When I practiced a more Buddhist lifestyle, I've always had a phrase in my head, "Messy room, messy mind." Over the years it's helped me greatly reduce the amount of unnecessary things and to create that space you mentioned. I love that computer desk idea with the smaller drawers! 😊
Interesting and you don't practice said lifestyle anymore? What happened if you don't mind me asking? One my sisters is a practicing Buddhist and she finds that it helps calm her ADHD mind as she goes about her day.
@@thelifewithnate I feel like I did everything to be the "perfect" Buddhist - and that's where I went wrong, haha. Perfection is silly. There's nothing wrong with meditation, it's just that my hardcore approach to it made me lose my sense of self. While I don't have ADHD, I believe routine and a regular meditation practice would greatly help your sister. I hope she finds comfort in it like I did.
I most appreciated Tip #6, "determine the theme of your room". I realized that having too many items is the result of not having a clear theme for my life. I know what I value and what I love to do, but I keep many options open- so I hang on to many items that I don't value or don't use frequently! This video will help me create a theme based on what I enjoy now, what my "ikigai" is, and let go of items that don't fit this theme. Thank you Aki !
To quote the American statesman, Benjamin Franklin," A place for everything and everything in it's place". This is a concept that I try to live by. It is interesting that the less one has and enjoys space, the more one thinks about whether to purchase another item. I often ask myself if I really need it. Nine times out of ten I do not. I am not a minimalist though I follow a lot of their principles and having less for me is an ongoing process since I have accumulated so much over the yrs. People often comment about how peaceful my house and how organized I am and relatively speaking this is true. However, I I am still looking for and finding things all the time that I can give away. Arrigato for all the simplifying tips.
Your videos have really helped me recently. I’ve completely overhauled my room in the last week and I finally feel like I can ‘breathe’ in there. I’ve thrown out so much stuff and really lightened up my room and my mind. Thank you for the help!
I love the idea of themed rooms. I have a house with several rooms, and since I care for my family, I have different rooms for different needs. But the theme can really work - even for closets. PS I Iove the relationships to tea ceremony.
Determining the theme of the room is such a helpful idea. I’m definitely going to use that. I also really like the idea of limiting the number of items to 3 or 5. I’m also going to use this. I was at the store yesterday and they had a really good sale on shoes. There were quite a few in my size that I really liked and I do need new shoes. But I couldn’t figure out how many I needed at the store. I didn’t buy any because I just couldn’t make a decision. Having a pre set number is such a helpful tool.
It's amazing! I love japanese culture and this tips was to me so actual, understand and cool! Thank you for your work and this useful content. I was enjoying
Combining the modern need to declutter with Japanese traditions of old and ceremonies is an amazing combination. Pretty interesting since I implemented some of these tips myself!
You're always so inspiring and supportive! This video is completely unique from any other organization videos I've seen...and I've watched many! Thank you for your wonderful perspective!
Love your videos but have you thought of adding more ‘space’ in them, too? I would enjoy them even more if you kept natural pauses and some silence 🤗❤️
Good points. I never thought about cleaning room first thing in the morning. You look much more handsome without facial hair Greetings from Los Angeles
Although my room is minimal, lately I have been feeling the call to minimize even more. The Japanese simple life is beautiful and my room is also inspired by the design. ❤ Thank you for all the helpful tips Aki! 😊

Amazing video! I really "felt" what you were conveying. Your lovely persona is so nice and just surrounds me completely, making me feel light and airy! Thank you for that gift.
Very good advice on cleaning and putting things away before bed! It's like when I worked in an office, I was more organized in my work because after work I always put my tools in their places and when I came in the morning my work place was clean and tidy, so it was nice to start work, but now I work at home and at the end of the day I get tired, I leave my desk in a mess and clean it in the morning, so my day starts with unpleasant things and I can't focus on work after cleaning and I'm already tired and start thinking about lunch))) And now I see that it's a great idea to clean up right after work. Thank you!
The idea to determine the theme of the room is the one that I find it the most helpful :) But all the tips were really helpful! Thank you very much! :)
I was into minimilism in the past and i lived in a 10 by 16 shed. Everything had a place and space for use even w crafting. I enjoyed sewing while sitting on the floor. Then i got in a relationship, moved to another home and had a child. Now i ended up w a family living in a single room w no space, no storage, and too much stuff, toys. Now im moving into a small cabin w a loftbedroom. Hoping to only add in what we really need and use because its dysfuntional and depressing otherwise. Wish me luck😂
As our life circumstances change so do our living needs. As a single person, we make all the choices but when we get married and have children everything changes. Good luck! As children get older, they can be taught about taking care of their toys and belongings and giving some away to more needy children.
New Subscriber from California USA I am Sensei Japanese but have not travelled to Japan. Trying to learn more about the Japanese culture that I don’t know
Wow really loved how you translated the tea ceremony steps and concepts to minimalism, very insteresting. Got a lot of value out of this video 😊 thank you for sharing this with us, I will try to apply a lot of these ideas to my home, thank you 🙏🏼
Thank you for sharing these great tips. 👍🏻😃 I developed good habits last year because of your ideas. I would like to try keeping numbers of my items from now on. 💪🏻💪🏻
I love the idea of applying lessons from the philosophy of channou to something else! The most important rule I've implemented is one I took from a film, even though the lesson was meant as a joke! "Everything has its place and there is a place for everything."
Samurai Matcha, your video is so great. I live a similar lifestyle so i can totally relate to what you preach here. Minimalistic, simple & low maintenance lifestyle goes HARD ! Have a great day & cheers from France ;)
i greatly enjoy your channel... could you please do more food info? I love the Japanese way of food(s)... could you please make videos a bit longer? I appreciate your calm, intelligent way of speaking & all the ideas for improving life ... Thanks 💐
Thank you for the video. I will take baby steps as i am a pack rat. First, i need to take inventory of what i have before buying more. Having just 5 is a challenge. But i know the goal now. Thanks. I love your video.
minimalism lifestyle is close to impossible when you have kids, but I am applying a rule, if things are unused in 3to5 months anymore, that means it is unnecessary and needs to be let go. after watching this video, I guess I need another decluttering. looking forward to watching more of your videos. thanks a lot.
Thanks. Lately I actually cleaned up my room each section at a time. The closet, I got rid of half of the clothes I almost never wear anymore, and other stuff that took too much space. Then my bedding, then my drawers since those carries the most crap. I still have a bit to go completely clear my room out. The theme of my room. Well I still like anime and manga and books and figures. I tried to minimize the amount of series I buy and make sure these are the ones I want to keep, like my absolute favorite series.
"if something feels bothersome people tend not to do it" - yes. We got a battery powered vacuum cleaner as a gift. We've been using it a ton since then. Much more than the "normal" one. It's easier to get started, easier to clean the dust when it gathers in the container (container is smaller), no cables to fiddle around with when you go around the house. No need to look for a socket to turn it on. All these small things make it like 2 times more enojable to use.
"Turn around three times before entering the bathroom" better not to have any emergency 😂 By the way I love your channel. I'm already familiar with Japan and minimalism but seeing you feels more... Cozy? Relax? Well better than most other videos I've seen 👍
When you are in a big empty space like a village hall at a wedding or dance and the small children love to run around and play. It is the same feeling when you have more space in your home.
Thank you so much for sharing this with us all. I nearly died a year ago, and as I've healed and gained my strength, I have really been trying to focus on minimalism. I truly have too much stuff. Some things I didn't even remember I had them 🙈 I greatly appreciate your videos. I don't always comment, but what you share is making a difference 😊
I have been emptying my house of many things one spot at a time. Kitchen already feels much better and stuff there gets put away Quickly now. The dishes get done quickly and put away quickly also. My bedroom has been cleared of my excessive clothing and I keep hangers backwards until the clothes gets put back cleaned and I can see what I’ve worn. In drawers I use Marie Kondo method and I rotate after worn and it’s easy to know if clothes is damaged or stained when I put it back on. And I now have limited the space allowed for clothes. So i can buy one if I get rid of one or more. I now have to go through top of closet and shoes in my closet so that’s a work in progress. But they are placed. Bathroom is placed and hallway closet is all seperated by type of stuff and I’m now using up stock in there like air sprays and cleaners !!! We buy way too much stuff. I’ll be doing basement in the fall as I’ll be going camping this summer.
Very useful video sir can you share easy reading and writing tricks for children without stress and easy and enjoyable memory trick for school children. It's will very use ful for working mothers and school going children .how can handle them
I just trying to learn things, and find some golden middle road with my items. I'm not minimalist, and I dont know is it ever possible in my case, I love items too much to put them away. 😅 But I understand that smaller drawer thing throughout backpacking and size of a backpack. With a large backpack without noticing you take too much stuff and end up sweating under heavy pack. Smaller backpack force to think items twice, do I really need this? What happens if I dont have this? Can I replace or have double use to some item. Lot of thinking for weekend or week hiking trip, but on the trail climbing top to the hill I can enjoy the surroundings and nature, instead of sweating under too heavy backpack.
おhしょうございまづ I do the same every morning, open the windows to let in fresh air, sweep every room, move my Japanese shiki butan back out of the way to make floor space then make green tea or matcha 🍵🌱💚
I found out (the hard way!) that the more stuff I have, the longer cleaning will take. I have recently started taking everything out of a room, except large, and necessary furniture, and plants. You're supposed to live with the space for 24 hours, then just bring back in what you really need and love. I like the uncluttered look so much, I live with it all week! I also take the chance to give things a good clean. Living without the stuff in my living space helps me to let go of it, too.
1 0:28 Start your day by cleaning up in the morning 2 1:08 Put things back to where they were before going to bed 3 1:55 Assign address to items 4 3:52 Make the storage space small 5 5:00 Leave some empty space in the storage 6 6:13 Determine the theme of your room 7 7:35 Determine the number of items
Your timing is perfect. Cleaning and decluttering right now in this moment, just paused to eat something. Thank you so much and now Im gonna enjoy your video and learn something new. And I noticed that your video editing gets better and better every time. Keep up your great work! I hope to see you in the future again in germany so I can say hello Edit: The tipp with the theme is pretty awesome since you limit yourself and dont add unnecessary stuff.
I loved everything about this. Thank you. It comforts me a bit because I love the feeling of empty spaces. It’s just peaceful…and easier to maintain and clean.
I have always found the Japanese way of living respect worthy and fascinating. Personally I feel the more one grows spiritually the more one gets drawn towards minimalist lifestyle. Once you start decluttering your mind and soul you naturally want to declutter your physical environment.....!
Thank you for yet another exceptional video. Since I started following your content, I've noticed a positive transformation in my life. While I may not embrace minimalism to the extent you do, I've made a conscious effort to incorporate many of your insightful tips into my daily routine. I've stopped impulsively buying unnecessary things, gotten rid of some unnecessary items, but most importantly, you've awakened motivation in me to clean up. I used to dread cleaning at home, but your videos have changed my attitude towards this task. I no longer see cleaning as an unpleasant duty but as a way to relieve stress and bring order not only to my surroundings but also to my life. Greetings from Slovakia.
The concept of a clean room is one that cannot be overestimated! I find that when my home or surroundings are dirty, it creates a ton of additional unconscious stress for me as I try to go about my day. Like when I go to my normal day job and the apartment is a mess, all I think about is "dang, I need to clean everything up today!" and I run out of time! I got to implement some of these tips just to breathe more normally. Arigato, Aki!
