7 Types of Clutter to Get Rid of Today: Decluttering Ideas
In this video, I'll be going over 7 different categories of items you can declutter today. This isn't just another list of basic decluttering ideas. Rather, these are categories of clutter that may look a little different to each person, but they fit a common trend of why we save certain belongings. Hopefully after watching, you will be able to declutter one item from each category and maybe even gain a new perspective on them!

As for photos...it astounds me at how picture crazy our society has gotten. In pioneer days if you had a photo of yourself from when you were one, a wedding photo, and maybe a 50 year anniversary photo, you had a good documentation of your life. When I was growing up, it was a roll of film, usually 24 photos, per occasion. But today....my goodness it's all day long of anything. Over kill for sure.

I loved the pseudo-sentimental items. I‘m always feeling a bit guilty when I throw away birthday cards or wedding invitations or some things like that, because society wants you to keep these things. But I don‘t want to have them in my home if there is no meaning to them for me. I love those people that are giving those to me, but that‘s only a piece of paper.

I use my Digital Journal to take a photo of what has memories. If it’s important enough to journal about it then I add a photo of item ( like a card that someone took time to write something special). Then you’ve got a photo connected a memory. Easy to let go or throw away.

I gave away a stand mixer that I just forgot about because I saw it everytime I opened my pantry but never even noticed it! It finally occurred to me I hadn't used it in so many years!

My problem is there are some items that you can not donate, sell, upcycle for different reasons and I feel guilty to toss them because they end up in a landfield. Some times you don't use something but you may need it later in life. My strategy now is to buy less.
@AbundantlyMinimal

Buying less is so important in this process!

They are either trash in the landfill or they are trash in your house. Your choice.

I’m quasi rural. I put things outside my gate for whomever to take. Put out a basket that was female oriented a few days back, make up I don’t use, excess lotions, cleaning supplies, etc., I think it was the fastest thing to go! Less than 24 hours!

As someone who tries to apply a minimal/intentional mindset with my wardrobe, I find myself getting rid of things almost as often as I do with bringing new things in because of that "been there, done that" mentality. I guess you can say that with me slowly exiting my 20's, I'm starting to become more critical and discerning of what it is I love as well as what I don't love or wear as often. These tips are so well thought out, so thank you for the inspiration, Sarah!

My antique drafting table! Haven’t used it since college and I just turned 50! It’s beautiful but it’s going. Guy put a deposit on it and is getting it this weekend. Glad it’s going to see use again!

I plan to declutter my Christmas decor I don’t put up as much as I once did where I live at it’s a senior/ disabled building and the closests aren’t really large I’m waiting for the dumpster to be placed in the parking lot ( at the end) and I’ll then throw away unwanted items we aren’t allowed to throw big bags down the garbage shoot due to it may jam up the system

Hi Sarah! I was wondering if you have any tips on how to approach decluttering and organisation in attic/basement/garage spaces. Those spaces are specifically for items that we don't use very often, such as Christmas decor, however I do find it difficult to decide on what's worth storing and what can go when used so very rarely.

Hi Sarah I bought a sweater from a second hand shop and wore it a couple of times but it really doesn't fit me that good do I decided to get rid of it. Also we have had dinner table candles for ever and we don't burn candles anymore so we got rid of them. Thanks for the 7 tips I think 2 of them fit me. ❤

I love my photo memories. I also get attached to what my granddaughter threw out as I seem to feel it connected to her or their personalities. Some have gone but I feel a tug inside it's like it attaches itself to your heart in some way. I can't understand it

Overcoming functional fixedness is one of my favorite things - drives me bonkers that they give you a paint can opener with every can you buy...I only have about 50 things at home that are capable of opening a paint can including my trusty old screwdriver, LOL :) Is there anything you like in particular that you discovered you could use in multiple ways? speaking of paint cans though...the worst part for my minimalism is all the old solvents and paints I need to get rid of...they sit in a very dusty pile in the corner of the garage because our county hasn't had a hazard waste disposal event since the pandemic started!! *sigh* I know you'll sympathize!!

The paint can opener is a great example of overcoming functional fixedness! Maybe those types of examples would be a great future video! The hazardous waste collection issue sounds very frustrating!

I would rather have billions of photos rather than tangible items around. So if I really like something I’ll take a photo or scan it before getting rid of it. It helps when parting with cards and kids drawings/school work.

Im dreadful for sentimental stuuf, always keep greeting cards or letters for a year, because as morbid as it is, you never know if its going to be the last you receive from someone, they could pass before the next occasion, and I like to keep something with their handwriting
