King Yamm allows us great video content. How dare you question his production crew's choice of semi-relevant royalty-free inserts??? Seriously, he rides around, without incidents. Most of us don't want an incident, so we look for the inserts as his editor makes statements.
Thats a shitty motto. Just live your life as you choose to and dont bow to any agendas people might try to indoctrinate you, like this motto up above lol
CA lets people split lanes because the bike cops were tired of waiting in traffic and cant justify splitting with lights on all the time. That and the state doesnt give a shit if you die.
the federal regulation on helmets only pertains to construction of helmets sold(or what conditions manufacturers need to meet to be legal). not street legality. it's a common misinterpretation of the law by police looking to ticket riders. Unless your state has added specific laws regarding fins/spikes etc. And especially if you're ticketed for a go pro. Might be worth fighting the ticket. (don't argue with cops... odds they'll respond aggressive or abusive probably go up. don't admit to a crime just take your ticket then dispute it)
I usually wear a red LED ring on my backpack. I've had a lot of cops ask me where I got it when I'm stopped. I've seen more riders with one lately. Being visible is always good. No idea if it's illegal or not but since it's a solid red not a blinking I don't think it hurts anything.
I put a small white strobe on my R3 centre running light. It looks discreet and is not super bright, but I hope the movement is a bit more visible in mirrors, especially on dark early morning freeway commutes. It’s technically not legal here in Alberta, but I’ve passed several cops even at night with no issue. It’s not bright enough to be distracting, and being white it doesn’t impersonate ant emergency vehicle. After all, bicycles are allowed to use them...
Cops giving you a hard time about GoPro on the helmet is stupid. I heard from a cop: "it can fly off your helmet so its a potential hazard so put it on your bike".....but what if it flies off the bike? Isnt that the same thing? smh
@@chrisgraham5186 From my experience ....no. I have both. The Helmet cam is going NOWHERE. The tank mount? Thats more suspect actually. Its suction. Now are there are professional bike mounts you can put on a bike that are secure? Sure. But a helmet mount isnt as flimsy as 'lick n stick' as you put it. The point was that if any of them can fly off the bike, its the same potential danger said cop is talking about so those cops are talking out of their ass.
@@budgiecat9039 Cops often do talk out of their arses… I only wondered if that was his line of thinking and that if it's on your helmet, whether it's more likely to hit you, or distract you if it lets go. (Mounted to the bike, it just falls off.). You might know what you're doing, and will make sure it's secure… but I've met some total dipsticks in my time who don't have a scoobie (like the idiot who'd made some saddlebag supports, mounted to the top and bottom shock bolts… on a twin shock bike).
When I was working at a motorcycle dealership, I asked a cop who was getting his tires changed about LED strips on bikes. He said it's legal to have em in whatever color you want BUT you can only ride w them on if they are white or amber ONLY. This was in south Texas. So on his advice we started selling lighting kits that could change colors so customers could ride with amber or white lights n then change them to a different color when they got to where they were going n wanted to show off their bike.
About those mirror deletes. I broke the left mirror on my bmw k1600. I had to ride it home on the freeway. I refused to ride it again until the replacement mirror arrived and I installed it. Looking over your shoulder in freeway traffic is a recipe for disaster. Keep those mirrors
Same here. Sure, you get more vibration but not usually enough that you can't tell how close that Honda Civic driven by the teenage girl on her phone, is.
ironically, there's no requirement for turn signals, only 1 mirror required and only a single rear reflector in TX. there's no emissions check either, no ones checking for a fucking cat-converter ;)
One thing I didn’t hear covered in all the reasons to not do these things is that all of these factory deletes make it all that much easier for insurance companies to not pay out in the event of an accident.
Loud pipes DO save lives. I had a very loud V-Star. Nobody ever tried to change lanes on top of me. They knew I was there. I upgraded to a very quiet VMAX. People frequently change lanes on top of me, because they don't know I'm there. Hearing a motorcycle causes a driver to look for it, before changing lanes.
@ffsgdfSgDsv iyknavDdvsa Being a motorcyclist, when I hear a motorcycle, but can't see it, I look for where it is. I can't be the only one out there that does that. I can't look for a motorcycle that I can't see, if I can't hear it.
Quick tip, instead of getting a flip up plate just put clear skateboard grip tape over the numbers, it makes it not reflective and cameras can’t read it at night
Underglow Lighting in NY is a bit different. You can have any color you want, but it cannot be strobing or flashing. It has to be one color or static. If you have any flashing/strobing lights while on the road you are considered a distraction and you can be fined, towed or even arrested (Red/White/Blue).
When it comes to headlight shine, do the blue lights only look blueish to the viewer, or do they also shine blue light ahead? If they only look blue but shine white light, they should be good.
M Novo I had mine covered with blue film.. looks so nice but does cast blue light. Kind of sketchy in a dark canyon but I don’t ride much at night and my state requires daytime lights. gets a lot of attention but no cops yet 🏍 💨 👮
My bike got stolen and partially stripped in '07. I had to put it back together on the cheap and sorta forgot turn signals and a speedometer. Been running almost 14 years without either and don't really miss them. I started using hand signals and honestly feel more aware and have had less "close calls" when turning or changing lanes.
When I had my rally style Acerbis fender eliminator on my 250 Rally, the body shop told me they'd have to grab me a "Not for road use" sticker from their shop. After I paid they went to grab it...I just left. 2 years later, never had an issue with it; hand signals baby!
Loud pipes saved me 2 times in the last 2 weeks. I was in a parking lot looking for a space when an old guy was backing out of his spot,he was 5’ away, I blipped my throttle as soon as I saw him, way faster than I could reach the horn button. He stopped and continued on, a close call for sure.
I've seen some newer license plate kits that are spring loaded and set to that when airflow gets above a certain point it allows the plate to push back and up, usually around 70-80+ mph depending on the bike. Considering messing with "airflow" in that area of the bike will not slow you down at all , there really is no need to tuck it up anyways.
Although I don't condone hiding the plate, I study engineering and aerodynamics and disagree with your airflow statement. It creates substantial drag. Unfortunately motorcycles in general are have a terrible coefficient of drag (A Hayabusa- long time the most aero bike, now beat by CBR1000RRR was similar to a full size pickup in drag coefficient). So alot more than flipping the plate would be needed to make it somewhat efficient, but a 'more legal' fender eliminator kit is a start. I ride in a tuck even at legal highway speeds, and it's pretty easy to beat the manufacture's MPG rating, but not when I'm sitting up.
1. Some bikes have a TourPak/Trunk that blocks the plate from the factory. 2. Some bikes were built before mirrors were mandatory by the DOT. 3. Cobra NH series been in 30 states with these and never pulled. 4. Custom Dynamics X flasher for brake lighs. 5. Replace reflectors with LEDs in same color. 6. Remove factory lollipop and replace with Custom Dynamics Bagz. So when you going to ride a Iron Butt?
strobe light, the mod that I really hate most. didn't these people know that constant strobe light can cause seizure on epileptic person, even the epileptic person just a passenger it still cause panic for the driver. if just want to look cool then just put under glow or engine glow, the light is not direct to other people but yet the vehicle more noticeable and looks cool rather than put strobe light like a disco light.
In colorado we can have drop clutch diesel trucks, raw twostroke dirtbikes, oil burning tractors. But the second our cats go out in our 1989 Toyota FX16 commuter, all hell breaks lose.
I leave my motorcycle stock. My first motorcycle was an ‘08 Suzuki GSX 650F I bought brand new in ‘09. I kept her stock except for the seat. The front and rear turn signals were stalked. Looked fine to me everything looked fine to me. I had her for nine years. My car a 1997 Eagle Talon TSI AWD. Black, was literally rotting because I loved riding so much. I finally sold to her a kid so that she would have a good home. I traded my Suzuki in for my new bike. She was born on April 6th 2020, a Yamaha FJR 1300es. She is so beautiful. I have added a bigger touring windscreen because the original was made for small Japanese men. I may buy a custom seat but that is all. She is AWESOME. Stay safe folks and be ATGAT!
This made me realize how illegal I made my bike. Tucked plate, full system, no reflectors, flush signals. Now let’s just hope my local cops don’t notice..
I think helmet makers should be installing rear view heads up camera views so all it takes is a simple head turn to scan the entire rear terrain. Got used to looking through a helmet mounted mirror when doing bicycle touring. It was so easy to adapt to the process of monitoring what was coming up behind me to where it was second nature. Having it in a rear view helmet camera with night vision would be a game changer. I added reflective tape in distincive patterns that blend with the body lines of my bikes and helmets. The patterns I made with them leave no doubt I am a motocycle rider and bike. And not near as offensive to look at as those stupid round and rectangle reflectors.
I totally agree with the exhaust loudness, however I also don’t. I think that having a louder exhaust is beneficial because when they hear you they know you’re there. It can be safer
The fact is that the helmet protuberances one is a bit of a grey area. In most US states, this rule is included in the construction and use regulations, not user regs or road use. This is dealt with in a video by the "Audit the Auditor" channel on YT. As for the rest of the world (ie; Europe); I've never heard of anyone being pulled over for having a GoPro or whatever on a bike, in some countries (Russia and places like the Philippines etc.) video recording is highly recommended to avoid insurance scammers.
With the exception of extra lights front and back, appearancewise, my FJR1300 is completely box stock: mufflers, reflectors, etc. My bike spends a lot of time on the road all over the USA and I do not want to spend extra time trip planning. The only thing I have may be technically illegal is my Sena 20. Oh, and foam earplugs.
at the 10:00 mark note that this law is for helmet manufactures and the regulation on how they are to manufacture them and not the rider them self it has been proven in court many times but is confusing to some and cops will try and site you for it but always fight it. there is no law against fitting anything to a helmet, so long as it does not corrupt the “structural integrity” of the helmet but this is also subject to be different in some states.
The helmet thing is wrong. If you read the law it states "from the factory" it only works with things mounted FROM THE FACTORY if its anything thats you put onto it without compromising the rigidity of the helmet its ok. A lawsuit about this happened a bit ago when a guy got arrested for a gopro. All charges were dropped.
While Go Pro is illegal to have on a helmet in Washington State having a SENA 10C EVO is not since the helmet was tested and approved with a blue tooth device. State Patrol is about the only one that will give a ticket for it. It is also illegal to paint modify drill or remove anything from helmet.
My state doesn't require mirrors reflectors turn signals or a tag light. And the tag only has to be visible from at least five steps behind the back after being pulled
Yep, because it's technically no longer the exact same bike as the one that was inspected, so you basically put an inspection sticker on a not fully inspected bike -> committing fraud.
@@petermuller7687 That act is not "committing fraud." While the precise legal definition varies by jurisdiction, no where would that act be defined as fraud.
Great fun! Love your approach of quips of delight. Good job Sir! I'm 69(er) and ride a Yami FJR1300. The rear fender 'liner' (with plate bracket etc) was AWOL - first thing I replaced. It was a PITA!
Check out auxiliary/accessory lighting laws in Texas my dude! I was honestly shocked when I saw what it is and now I've got full RGB kits on all my bikes
Mongkol Lee yeah, you can also download weight reduction from the internet. Seriously what kind of idiot buys a liter bike when you can just download 1000 hp and negative 300 pounds on a grom?
@@LuccianoNova sure in some cases. Noise and emissions regulations might limit power with some bikes, or the same intentional crippling as some cars have. But. Not only will the next year's model have 2--10hp more out of maybe the exact same engine it will also have proven to be reliable... Tinkering with the ignition etc could decrease reliability and be too much for the components.
Good vid, I'm an old fart and I would not ride without mirrors. Now on the subject of loud pipes. While I don't like obnoxiously loud pipes my Yamaha SR400 was dangerously quiet. Seriously, the only thing you could hear on it was the ticking of the valves. I had people looking at their phones stepping in front of me ten feet away. At least putting louder pipes on made them look up. Now I'll admit they don't do much doing highway speeds it certainly helped the Sr400 in the city. Oh, in my state they don't do emission checks on bikes.
Several of your mods I understand fully. One I'm not sure that I agree with whatsoever would be Is one specific helmet Mod.... I've been writing with a Troy Lee design 3rd 3rd light if you will that mounts to the back of your helmet.. I've had that since clear back in the 2000 tand I honestly think that all helmets should have an integrated light in them.. It makes a hell of a difference at night when somebody can see your head lighting up especially when you're on a smaller bike. And yes of course I run extra reflective material on my helmet as well.
I had a mishap and some mirrors got broken and some fairings got upset, long story short, rode to the gas station without mirrors and it was mildly terrifying... never again
I want my mirrors. Watching autos pull up behind at stop/red light, etc. I watch them to see if they are really stopping. already have escape route laid out to get the he** out of the way.
Calif may have a lot of bike laws but they are mostly ignored. But lights, extremely loud exhausts and license plate visibility and speed will get you everytime. Once stopped, if you get an attitude, then they will go through the book. Ps, popping wheelies in front of cops is hysterically a no no. Seen this happen several times and it's a hoot to watch the cop get out just shaking their heads from disbelief.
Cali has strict laws for exhaust on cars but does not really apply for motorcycles, as long as you have some sort of exhaust they don’t mind. You Can’t straight pipe.
I can tell you in all honesty that loud pipes DO SAVE LIVES, they have saved my life on a number of occasions. Cite any study you want, I have experienced it.
I shit you not i once got pulled over on a ZX6 by CHP and was breaking so many laws at once he let me go and told me. "im not dealing with this , but i cant say the same for the next cop that may pull you over" lol. and i never got pulled over on that bike again.
My bike doesn't have a cat. It's 100% legal for it to not have a cat, even in California. And in fact, I have to use a lead substitute because it doesn't run right without a replacement for TEL. That said, it's quieter than literally any other bike you've seen. Most of the sound you hear is either the transmission, which sounds like a turbine, but not loudly so. It's a 1988 KZ1000-P
When did they start putting cats on bikes, all of mine are 80's or older and stock (other than the occasional tree growing around it) when I got them, so I'm guessing in 2000's they started this?
No. My 1989 Gb500 had one and a Air pump, that would mean it was a oxidizing cat. . My 1982 GS1100 doesnt have one. They arent very big and they are usually hidden from view. Around 2000 more became fuel injected. Most motorcycles now have 90's vehicle technology. Struggling along. Abs and stability control surprised me!
In New Mexico you don’t have too have blinkers you have too have reflectors but I never heard of anybody getting a ticket for reflectors and you only have too have one mirror
I have been riding motorcycles for all of about 2 weeks prior to this I had never gripped the handlebars of a motorcycle before my first bike has bar end mirrors and I can tell you from a beginner's viewpoint they suck my wrists cover them up I have to physically move my arm to see behind me
as of last year in north Carolina 78 of the 100 counties do not require emissions testing only a safety inspection. so i currently have no cat. on my 15' hd 1200 sport. yaaaa
Inspections aren't a thing where I live (Arkansas) lol. You can basically do whatever you want and get away with it until a cop notices and feels like writing you up for it. That'll pretty much never happen unless it's flashing red/blue lights, or license plate stuff. I rode with no turn signals or mirrors for like 5 months and never got pulled over.
State laws will dictate reflector necessity. On bicycles, there must be reflectors at time of sale, but after that they are not required by federal law.
Cars hear load exhaust before the bikes are sometimes visible. If reflectors work then it’s crazy to think that anything alerting drivers would not work like horns, reflectors or decently not overbearing load pipes.
