My family laughs at me for being so "obsessed" with sunscreen! I have 4-5 different kinds in my boat-bag as well as in my purse--they think I'm crazy that I don't want to get tanned. But my skin looks ten years younger than it really is! Thanks to YOU!
@@bodnarova05 Yes! Thank you--that's such a great point of advice! That's why I love this channel! The information shared, not just from Dr. Dray, but the amazing audience has saved my skin, my pocket book & sanity! :)
I can relate so much 😂 they laugh at me all the time...... Purchasing sunscreen that leaves white cast didn't help it 😂 (I use it only when I am at home cause I don't want to throw it into trash) But at the end of the day, I know the science behind it. Sunscreens are important.
I finally can't leave my house without SPF and I started consistently applying it to the back of my hands too! My boyfriend was recently trying to tell me I don't really need it if I'm just running errands in the car and I had to explain to him how wrong that was!
Once a month I have a lactic/glycolic peel at the office. Wow!!! Skin like velvet after third day. In addition to CE Ferulic, Tretanoin, UV umbrella, hat, glasses and sunscreen. It’s taken a year, but hyperpigmentation has lightened from brown to very light peach. Also did CO2 laser last year. I’m 61 and my skin glows thanks to your videos😘
I stopped tanning at 17 and stayed out of the sun as much as possible. I am now 67 and I can’t remember if there even was sunscreen at that time. I know there were products to help you improve getting a good tan. For me, it was just that I noticed older people who were in the sun a lot had so many wrinkles. Then at age 30, I developed Vitiligo. Started as a spot on one hand and increase drastically each year. I live in a cold climate so I would have no idea how much the vitiligo had progressed until summer. My family has had a beachfront cottage for 53 years so of course I was on the beach with my 4 kids and grandchildren every summer. Not only was I lathered in sunscreen but I wore long skirts, long sleeves, hats and everything to cover my skin. If I missed a spot where there was no pigment, I would burn within 15 minutes. It was not really fun and the vitiligo was very visible except for my face, as I am very pale naturally. So heavy makeup would help. But I lived through self tanning lotions, body make up - vitiligo is very disfiguring. I am now in end stage vitiligo and the one thing that came out of all the frustration is that my skin is still in good condition. Not the best way to avoid the sun’s damaging rays, but really no choice.
I'm so sorry that you went through that. Truly I feel for you. A friend of mine has the Vitiligo. She has a lot of support from friends and family. It must be a big help for someone with it. Good to know that you managed it well and protected yourself from sun damage.
@@LilBoPeep777 Thanks Christie. Happy to hear your friend has a lot of support. I was fortunate in that I was extremely pale, so my face was easily covered. Plus I was older when it really started to spread. My husband said he didn’t notice or care. So lots of support there. It is younger people, especially teenagers, who have a difficult time. Appearances are so important at that age. I really feel for them.
BTW, I also used lip sunscreen when it came out. You have to cover everything. It also prevents your lips from collapsing as you age. I am sure everyone knows that Michael Jackson had vitiligo. People accused him of trying to make himself “white “, but he literally was turning white.
@@LilBoPeep777 Well, it was born of vanity, lol. I used whatever I could find. But Dr. Dray’s channel gives excellent advice ( she’s a dermatologist ) so I got some chapstick. Very soothing.
@@parisinthe30sx I've tried a couple different kinds... I even bought and had to return the SkinCeuticals one that's supposed to be the best , due to them all making my hyperpigmentation worse and tanning my skin.
You have convinced me to wear sunscreen again. I stopped wearing it because living in Oregon it seemed pointless. But I damaged my skin in AZ growing up. We wore zinc on our nose but in the 80s we mainly burned until tan. I used to use baby oil to tan! My poor skin. 😞
Happy Monday Dr Dray and friends. I do my best to stay covered! I'm about to spend a week at the beach for my daughter's wedding and have a chair with a cover and a sun hat! Plus, I use sunscreen everyday under my makeup. I still ended up with skin cancer as I lived in the South Pacific in my twenties and was a sun worshipper! Shame on me. I wish I knew then what I know now!
Hey Dr, 2Qs: 1: Do blackout blinds/curtains block the full spectrum of UVA? 2: What if we have darker face compared to arm skin because of past/teen UV exposure? Would tretinoin/laser restore the face's shade to its natural colour? Thanks :)
Somehow I missed this video and I'm just now seeing it. I have sun damage on my upper chest from a burn I gave myself while driving two years. At the time I drove a Honda Element with a lot of windshield. I was also taking two meds that make me photo sensitive, and I forgot my SPF 😱 Four hours later, I had what looked like a raised rash. Working to restore the damage now. Thank you!
Thank you Dr. Dray! You deliver your expertise knowledge perfectly and love your review of these products. Also, thank you for reviewing in-office treatments!
Azelaic acid (20%) every night works the best for me. I didn't put it on last night and have blocked pores already (especially on my nose and a pimple!). Just about to apply azelaic now....Ego brand Azclear Medicated Lotion. I don't use it under makeup/sunscreen as it pills. (Use a retinol at night too e.g. Retin-A). 👱♀️❤
Update: I tried Paula's Choice AHA/BHA peel. It made an immediate difference in one 10 minute use. I avoided AHAs since using stronger retinoids because they stung, but this peel stings slightly and briefly. I will continue using it once a week as recommended. Thanks, Dr. Dray!
I've been using the Nip and Fab exfoliant glycolic scrub which has the AHA/BHAs every 7-10 days. It's been really helping the texture and my pores. My forehead is a little behind because it got way too much sun in Florida last summer!
These facial treatments sound amazing. Would you also be comfortable in suggesting to try the BBL Forever Young laser? Looks very evicence based and effective.
This was a bad summer for me….I almost never wore sunscreen and exposed my skin to ALOT of sun, plus I went to the Caribbean for a week and literally baked on the beach…I had beautiful peach skin now it’s a yucky brown tan….I can’t even begin to imagine the sun damage I did…I was goi g through a bout of depression and skincare wasn’t a priority… now I am making sure this never happens again
Dr. Dray, thank you for these informative videos. I stopped using feminine wash after watching your video and it changed my life! Can you please make a video about mandelic acid? I’m not sure if it’s a thing in the states but it’s so big in Taiwan. We started sheltering in place last month and so many people are using mandelic acid to treat pores at home now.
I am having a happy Tuesday so far. 'Accidentally' woke up around 2am again (Australian time), so had to watch Dr Dray's latest installment and read/reply to comments. Just as well that I now have Tuesdays off work! Enjoy everyone! 👱♀️❤
Could you do a video comparing the two CeraVe retinols you mentioned? I use the blue one, but I'm not really sure what the difference is in benefits between them.
not necessarily - physical exfoliaters just remove the dead skin cells from the surface of the skin but don't actively help produce newer skin cells or support cell turnover - some chemical exfoliaters do tho so I believe there lies the difference
Think of it that way: skin cell turnover is the natural rate of your skin renewing itself from the inside. Exfoliation is the act of removing dead skin cells by chemical or mechanical means. Neglecting the latter, might result in dull skin or blemishes (for some people, not everyone, obviously). Overdoing it will result in raw, irritated, sensitive skin and a compromised skin barrier.
Very informative! Hey, Dr. Dray, I have mature, normal to combination skin. I never get breakouts anymore, but do have t-zone, clogged pores. Would it be acceptable to apply Differin all over the face to fade sun damage even though I don't have breakouts? As always, thank you for your efforts to help us who live too far away to see you in your office! You are generous!
Greetings Dr. Dray hope u r well n 🖐Hello Every1 n Happy Monday😀n what a Wonderful Vid.... thanks n This is Gonna B Good🔥👍n Continued Blessings to All💜.....
I got a lot of spots in my face and people look at me like I'm a druggie it's just the way my family skin has been for ages 🥺😩 this video helps me a lot I have never done sunscreen and I'm always like I can go without it . I never give it to much prop I will start immediately and let you know how it helps me I do vitamin c it stings a little it's that ok?
@@Crystal-Marie Yes. Dr Dray has said that fragrance in products with actives is just asking for possible irritation. A good way to check especially if using a "natural/clean beauty" product is to copy/paste the ingredient list to incidecoder. It'll say if an ingredient is "perfuming." They also will list if an ingredient is a possible irritant.
@@tisthedamnphd1244 I agree, dr.dray and I started around the same time growing our hair out.I probably have had a few more trims than her, but mine is close to her length. No hot tools or blow dryer, it makes a big difference
Excited for this! I have my routine that hasn’t changed in much in past year or so, have had success but have been interested in any updates/products you recommend. Gracias Por todo!
The “laser king” dermatologist here in Houston, told me to start using Skinceuticals Discoloration Defense..$$$..to get a jump start on any in office procedure for sun discoloration. Even with years of sunscreen use, damage happens! I’m currently looking for a dupe bec it’s very pricey.
I have the discoloration defense by Skinceuticals and my daughter purchased The Ordinary, niacinamide + zinc, since it was so much cheaper for her. We have both tried them both to compare, and we can honestly say the Ordinary is worth the buy. In fact, the discoloration defense would often cause irritation(redness) to our skin the next day. So for something similar, I would start there, but I don't believe the Ordinary has the Kojic acid in it like the Skinceuticals, other than that they are meant to do similar things. Hope that helps you.
My dermatologist recently added RF microneedling to their cosmetic services. The esthetician said it is painful and similar to laser. I really want to do it, but that is extremely discouraging. Are the brands of devices really that different, where one is painful and the other is not? How do we know which ones are best?
Seconded. I used to think toner was unnecessary unless it exfoliated. EA’s toners rock, though. They make my skin more even toned. I’m not sure the capsules are doing much.
I use all of the topical items you’ve mentioned. I’ve also had BBL for years and 6 months ago had my first Halo tx and now I’m questioning weather or not they were a good choice as I’ve now noticed Melasma pop up on my forehead and cheeks. It’s really frustrating!
@@user-cd6xp5lk4c i don’t know if it was directly related. I will say i liked the results within a month or two but 6 months later i have more pigmentation and Melasma than before.
Had BBL and it freaked me out bc one spot got darker while it helped others. Lasers are tricky you really have to have the proper dermatologist that understands lasers too
There are many Drs now recommending 5, 10, 15 min sun exposure BEFORE sunscreen application in order to get vit D INTO the mitochondria of the cell (vast immunity benefits) whereas oral vit D only works in pineal gland, not nearly as beneficial
Such an Important Subject Dr. Dray!! I Have Learned Sooo Very Much from You!! You're Totally Amazing!! Thank You for a Perfect Video!!! Love and Hugs!! Always!! Xoxoxo
I recently started using a retinol night serum and there were so many to choose from. I have been using the L’Oréal Revitalift. Any thoughts on this product?
Hi Dr Dray! In Germany we have sunscreen that protects against UVA, UVB and long UVA and against the effects of infrared! Maybe it's not available in the US...
@@Flarui thanks for replying :) I'll check again but when I checked Garnier Ambre, I think it only had a UVA 4 star or PA 3 star insteaf of UVA 5 or PA 4.
This I felt was more preventive and to be honest, I didn't watch it all the way through yet. . What about getting rid of sun burns from 8 years ago? I have a black sub burn patch on my face that looks so ugly. Can you please let us know how to get rid of it?
Hi Dr Dray, there was some suggestion that resveratrol (such as in The Ordinary serum) becomes unstable in sunlight, and should not be used during the day. Would love to get your take on this.
I use paulas choice each morning and was not thinking last week and took my grand son to the park and during so I walked around the track twice. noticed the next morning before applying again that my face tone is darker, looks scaly in areas, dry etc. what can I do? please like my question before answering, that's the only way I get RU-vid notifications. if you just answer, I will not get it.
Hi! I recently purchased the Resveratrol + Ferulic Acid from The Ordinary and I have also been really liking the Marine Hyaluronics (The Ordinary). Is this a good nighttime routine (mature 65 yr old, fair, dry, sensitive, sun damaged) - - Cleanse > Marine Hyaluronics > Resveratrol + Ferulic > moisturizer. (Some nights starting with a gentle AHA first and some nights using the No.7 retinol serum before moisturizer)? Thoughts? Thanks thanks thanks!
Any sunscreen that doesn't smell like sunscreen? Preferably fragrance free? I get migraines so easily esp from fragrance that it makes it hard to find a sunscreen. I use Neutrogena 110 when I'm feeling ok but if I feel off I end up foregoing it in fear of a full on debilitating migraine.
I went to purchase the antioxidant from The Ordinary, but when reading the details it said it wasn’t suitable for sensitive skin. Any other antioxidants that you can recommend for those of us with sensitive skin? TIA!
I use Cerave’s Vit C serum and it has been very helpful in brightening my skin. I have no redness anymore besides a few post acne marks. I just started it 2 months ago and have had no irritation. I have chronic hives and dermatographism (skin writing) so I react to a lot of things. This one has been great for me!
Can you use retinol on the body over healed and settled tattoos ( 1-5 year old tattoos) ? Really want to use my differin gel on my shoulders and chest but don’t want to fade my tattoos at all .
Yes, you can. Tattoos are far deeper in the skin than a retinoid is going to reach. But as you probably already know, the sun WILL fade your tatts (especially the colours,) so protect that art with plenty of broad spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen 🧴😊👍🏼 Chaq x
I am fair skin colored but when i put on sunscreen specifically i use laroche posay 50 plus but whenever i wear it i become darker even with makeup.what do u recommend me?
Could retinols help to fade moles? I had several checkups with a dermatologist, because I'm constantly worried about having new moles. They are not off the surface, so they cannot be removed with a laser. I was wondering if retinol could help to fade moles or at least prevent them from expanding bigger? I know that Dr.Dray has said that retinoic acid helps to exfoliate bad skin cells. I wouldn't feel so stressed every day if I could just apply retinols on areas where moles are, but I don't know if that is safe to do.
