@@frankl34798 Yes, it's always fun to learn and at my age it keeps my brain active. Something did strike me as odd today......the fact that we spell words the British way, yet speak american. Guess it's a sign of being multicultural, eh? 😁

@@CharCanuck14 haha. well i am from britain originally, and still adopt a lot of their spelling. and i always remember as a child hearing how good it is for the brain to do the crossword. i don't actually do them very often, but i've taken the playing of trivia, and other such games, as a good enough toy. we must fight this thing called aging, and not let the old man in. haha.

How is it 71%?

There are 30 people in a room. The first person has 29 people that could share a birthday(29/365) = 7.9%, then if the first person doesn't share a birthday with anyone then the second person has 28 people they could share a birthday with(we remove the person we already tested with everyone). (28/365) = 7.6%, so on so on.

@@jackwatt8988 I was trying to use Bayesian probability on this one..

Lol. This is some terrifying misunderstanding of maths/probability.

What is the logic behind thr 71? Can someone explain
@kasciano24
@kasciano24 4 месяца назад
If you consider a normal 365 day year, the odds of you sharing a birthday with someone is 1/365 or 0.27%. Now, consider you're in a room with 30 people. You have 29 chances to share a birthday with someone in that room. Then the next person has 28 more chances. Then 27, 26, 25, etc. Calculating the factorial of 29 is a very big number, (8.84 x 10^30) And every single one of those combinations has a 0.27% chance of happening. So when you use binomial probability to calculate the likelihood that one of those combinations would hit the 0.27% chance of happening, it comes out to about 71%.

Why not use Bayesian probability for this one?
@hablo_papøl

@@kasciano24I've always seen it explained reversely. That is, we calculate the probability that none share a birthday. This is the product of the odds that each individual person doesn't share a birthday with any others. This probability is 365/365 for P1, since they may be born on any day of the year, 364/365 for P2, since they may be born on any day of the year except P1's birthday, and so on. The result of the multiplication of all these fractions is the probability that none share a birthday. Then the chance that at least two do is 1 minus this probability
