Hong Kong-based Malaysian Toh Hong-keng is living proof that you’re never too old to learn. After retiring from his sales executive job at age 65, he decided to go back to school to pursue a medical degree from Southwestern University in the Philippines. Five years later, the 70-year-old attended his white coat ceremony on July 20, 2024, graduating alongside classmates over half his age.

If he attends medical school in US, he will be taking up a spot from a younger person who can serve the community as a doctor for a much longer time. But thanks goodness he is not in US, so kudos to him for the accomplishment.

congraduate to him and his aspiration, it is a great milestone for his accomplishment even though the philippines medical education is accessible for anyone who has money for tuition with an average IQ, but by no mean to degrade his intelligence.

Are you out of your mind? Many doctors and health care workers in the US are from Philippines. So sad that because Americans always treat Philippines as a colony they don't ven show a single Filipino healthcare in their movies. I finished my medical studies in Europe, but I tell you, Philippines' medical education is way harder.

4:45 - Let me explain... he is a Malaysian... in Malaysia, in order to be able to practice medicine/recognized as a medical doctor... one has to obtained a medical degree recognized by the Malaysian Medical Council and then be provisionally registered with the Malaysian Medical Council upon entering the profession and MUST complete 2 years of housemanship in Malaysian Government Hospitals... once that completed, only then a FULL medical license (full registration) is granted by the Medical Council and only then one is considered a full-fledged medical doctor in Malaysia... Unfortunately for him... he graduated from from a university that is not recognized by the Malaysian Medical Council (as a matter of fact NO medical degree from the Philippines is recognized in Malaysia, you can find this out yourself in their website)... as a result, he CANNOT register as a medical doctor in Malaysia to even start his housemanship UNLESS he passed the Exam for Provisional Registration (EPR) conducted by the Malaysian Medical Council for graduates from unrecognized medical schools/colleges/universities... then again... as he said... he just wanted to venture into other paths... housemanship can very brutal for someone his age... Congratulations on graduating med school~

As someone who entered back housemanship at 30+ years of age, I also sometimes doubted myself whether I'm doing the right thing.. housemanship really is tiring and it seems my age is catching up to me abit compared to my half a decade younger peers. This story is inspiring, I hope he will try to become a fully qualified doctor, be it in Malaysia or the Philippines.

Congratulations! If you are asking people whether you can do something at a certain age, whether it’s too late etc., you are basically asking for permission. Why do you need to ask for permission to do something that you want to do? Just do it like this doctor! We are all going to die anyway so just go experience and do what you want to do.

After all the effort, his medical degree is only valid in the Philippines. He might as well buy a degree off a degree mill. It is a worthless degree practically. I doubt he will practice in the Philippines. They may not even allow him if he wants to. If he just want to prove himself, he should enrol in the Uni of HK or NUS etc
