Thanks for the great video. Your how too on spool pins helped me to conquer all my padlocks that had spools. now I find them the easiest. I've been waiting for a how too on serrated. thanks again Off to attack my American locks

Also GREAT video! I'm currently on a security pin kick, trying to push myself as you know. This video is perfect. Every night I line up about 10 American Locks, and slowly pick my way through them. Soon I will move on to even more tricky ones. This video enlightened me on an area where i've been hitting a wall. Thanks!

Rotational torque is expressed as [weight/distance from axis]. You could actually measure it with a small set of digital scales. Just position the tension wrench and use the scale to apply force instead of your finger. Then the torque would be [weight/length of wrench]. If your tension wrench is 4 cm long, very light torque might be 1 grams/4 cm (0.035 ounces/1.6 inches), and heavy tension might be 40 grams/4 cm (1.4 ounces/1.6 inches). You could then convert that into a common scale like grams per centimeter. 1 gram/4 cm would become 4 g/cm and 40 grams/4 cm would be 160 g/cm. Another way you could think about it, if you have a 1 cm long tension wrench sitting horizontal in a lock and you hang a piece of A4 paper (4.5 grams) on the very end of it, you would have 4.5 g/cm of torque. On the end of a 4 cm long wrench, that same piece of paper would give you 18 g/cm of torque.

@@bumman117 I found it challenging, but I did get to point where I could was able to pick it fairly consistently. But it would take a few attempts that would take a while, like 10 mins to do pick it sort of thing. The hardest thing I find is the tension! Light enough tension to not catch the serations but just enough tension to make one pin bind at a time and pick each pin. Most of the time I can get 3 or 4 pins picked easily, the hard part for me is the last 2 or 3 pins, as I sometimes have to loosen up the tension a bit and accidentally drop some pins 👍

Yeah, the truth that any tension between lightest tension possible* and heaviest tension possible* will work. I assume the heavier tension might be usually slightly faster method and might be helpful with some specific locks. *possible in the sense of it is possible to pick that lock with it.

I will be one happy viewer ( other videao's are also great :-) bust this is really super) one pupil in the Netherlands. I thorn apart some old wind screen wipers and this winter is the theme to start making a couple of 'picks'.

its really interesting how bill starts at the back and LPL normally starts at the front also bill tends to use BOK tension and lpl seems to prefer TOK tension

bosnianbill, If you do any training for agents, you could set-up torque transducer with digital display to show pressure level on your torque bar.

That is a neat idea. It could be done with physics or with electronics, such as a "weight" measuring device. Many times I find that whatever I am applying light pressure to, such as a file or whatever, I keep slowly increasing pressure without noticing it. A tool like this, could train me to hold consistent pressure.

New to picking and locks. Is it possible to remove standard pins and add serrated pins to a lock and keep the same key? If so it seems like a great way to upgrade a standard lock.

OmegaVestoLord key pins need to remain same length. Driver pins, not really. They do need to be roughly the right length. And yeah, it’s certainly possible to upgrade locks with security pins.

I have kind of what may be an elementary question. I've read the detail overkill and I think I understand how everything works - for the most part - but why do the pins remain springy after they've been picked into place? If the tumbler moves slightly once a pin is picked, wouldn't that make it so that that particular key-pin would no longer be able to be moved up past the shear-line? It would still be able to fall down, leaving the driver-pin to rest on the edge of the tumbler; but it shouldn't be springy anymore, right? Or am I missing something? Thanks.

Zach, the pins don't remain springy after you've picked the pin because the driver pin and spring are caught up above the shear line. The key pin tho, will fall down due to gravity. You can still feel it but can easily detect that it is not under spring pressure. Now, just because a driver and spring are trapped, doesn't guarantee they are picked to the shear. They may be stuck, or hung up on a serration or spool. You'll just have to learn what those things feel like in order to beat them.

I am picking about 20 American padlocks there are 3 that i have not yet been able to pick. 2 have really deap spools, get deep false set go for the spool next to it and the first one is lost. back and fourth i go. Help? the other one i dont seem to be geting anything to bind but #1 and i suspect its an 8 cut. but i pick on it over and over and itls the only one that binds. ?? its fun just having a hard time. thanks your channel is great !!!!!

I have a similar cutaway, however mine has cuts down the plug as well making the entire length of the pin cylinders visible. Also you can see your pick inside while working. Do you use the style you have over the style I have intentionally, or is that just the one you happened to buy?

+Joe “Shearlock” Riggs Here is a link to the Cutaway I have. It comes with Spool pins and Serrated pins, also comes master keyed with keys and extra wafers. So many repinning situations are possible out of the box. And like I said, it's cut down into the plug so you can see your pick working etc. Works really smooth too. If interested. r.ebay.com/pu4l2j

You said that springy pins might be unpicked OR picked? Can you explain me how picked pins can be still springy? How lower pins can go upward if pin is set and the sheerline set? Thanks.

+bosnianbill Hm.. the problem of the Americans? That can't happen to us Europeans. We don't pick the locks upside down. :) And.. by the way, thanks for the video.. It really helped me to sort out (at least theoretically)what am I doing wrong. I believe broght me much closer to opening those two Pacific Lock padlocks that still (I only opened one of them once) lives in my 'nasty box'.

I don’t understand how a pin can be springy if it has been set. In my experience, the key pin feels floppy. It will fall with gravity, but as the other pin is set above the shear line, the spring is decoupled and will not act upon the key pin. Is this different from other pin styles for some reason?

So with serrated pins you do the same thing as normal pins just more then once. You repeat the process as many times as there are serrations?

At 3:12, how do you know that you over-picked pin 5 if you can't see inside the lock? That is my biggest problem with lockpicking in general: not knowing if I've over-picked a pin! Any help would be EXTREMELY helpful! Thanks!!

I have a small ilco lock made in Hong Kong I guess, and I can pick it open, but I'm not sure how. see everytime I open it, it feels like I'm hittong one pin and then bam it's open. is there something im missing or am I just getting lucky? any chance you'd be interested in it?

You can FEEL the pins, and that tells you what kind they are.

It sounds like you picked it to a false set, meaning it probably contains at least 1 spool pin. CHeck out the videos I made on how to beat spool pins to see how to overcome it.

+frosty iceyhot Partial spools can be serrated. There are a variety of home-made spool hybrids that he receives in some locks. Some locks can also have serrated wafers, now those can be a little tricky.
