As a retired Audio Engineer I have little experience with the equipment you renovate which is why I find your work so fascinating. I enjoy your excellent camera work and comments and attention to detail. As I am now partly disabled I get great enjoyment watching your videos so keep up the good work. It would be really good if you could spend a little time letting us hear the restored equipment actually working.
Thank you very much for your valuable comments. I try to work as clean as I can and to respect the original. I was very happy with your liking, thank you again. :)
Nice job there ! I'm more familiar with acousti phonograph restorations, but I've found a new hobby with those funky 70's players so your work helps ! I like they way you did things ; there are some people calling themselves "restorers" who just murder old stuff by scraping off everything and repainting/replating their own way, or overpolishing everything, but you did it just they right way. It looks as close as its original shape ! I know it's not always a loss, but even if an object is in "advanced" shape let's say, like was yours, and might not be irremplacable, I'm the kind to preserve things if they've made it this long in time ! Cheers ! ;)
Thank you very much for your interest and comments. I try to approach the subject of restoration just like you. I think it is very close to the original and it is necessary to deal with the object without covering the traces of the past or completely destroying it. So your comments made me very happy. Many people don't think so. Too much renewal, I think, also reduces the value of the object. Thanks again and cheers! :)
Hey RM I have had this video saved to watch one day, today was the day...haha I really enjoyed it. I will be saving it as there is an old turntable in my garage and might need some advice on it. Was nice to see Lucy😊 Take care🙂
Thank you very much dear Tim :) The turntable had a really nice design. Wait for the turntable in your garage, maybe I can take care of it one day :) Unfortunately, our cat in this video passed away. Her name was Rose. It's been two years. My eyes fill with tears every time I think of her. Greetings mate...
@@Restomaniac Oh I am so sorry to know this about Rose, I really thought she was Lucy; they sure looked alike. It would be cool to be close enough to help each other on projects. I am just guessing the turntable needs work, as it is stored with some of my sister's and my childhood stuff. I hope both you and MrsRM are doing well.
Philips still employing in 1970s the old germanium PNP transistors ( I captured the schematic image @ 1:50 to better take a look ). I have a 1964 Philips portable turntable that employs more or less the same topology with germanium transistors.
I'm impressed of what you are able to do. Keep up with posting these videos. And it brought back childhood memories seeing this record player again, we had the axact same model in my home.
Just bought one of these from eBay, looks in ok condition, waiting for it to arrive. Quite therapeutic watching this. What do you use to clean all the plastic, just good old soap and water or something special?
Yes, it would be safest to clean with soap and water. You can also do fine sanding after cleaning. If you leave white plastics in hydrogen peroxide (5%) in the sun for a few hours, they will turn whiter.
@@Restomaniac The needle looks fine and I’m hearing it’s playing. It worked before a transport and did gave a quick sound when opening it but after that just a silent humming that’s not affected by changing the volume. So don’t know what to look for 😢
We had a sanyo solid state portable record Player in the seventies and it actually charged the alkaline batteries when used on mains dont know if it was supposed to but it definately did
Sir Conkers - That would have risked the battery’s exploding/leaking - only rechargeable battery’s should be put into it if you are to power it from the mains, I assume that was before the figure-8 sockets had a switch in them to disconnect the battery’s when plugging it into the mains
hello congratulations my friend, give me a tip please .... how to recover the colored plastic parts of these devices without being with a new painting.
I haven't done it before, but I think I would have sanded the discolored top of the plastic with 200 grit sandpaper. I would then take the sanding fineness up to 600 grit. Finally, I used a colorless spray varnish to make the plastic look shiny again. I think you should try it on junk plastics first, if it works, you can try it on plastic parts of your device.
blokhet - both vinyl records and PHILIPS compact cassettes are back in fashion 😁 - their are still those and audiophiles who have vintage equipment and like to play them. Yes, in this modern world, where we tap/wave at a smart speaker and bark at Alexa to play your favourite music, then there’s us old dinosaurs who liked what we did in the past - like the record being played in this video, and an example of the vintage player being restored. It is believed that the CD and the blue-ray disks have gone the way of the dodo as you can stream music/video to a smart thing 🙁
Amazing job, I loved it, but, I believe if you have used clothes bleach, like Clorox, or, so, I'm sure it will work more than the Hydrogen Peroxide, I use it all the time.
Thanks for showing me how to open the player, got one of these from my mother. Just what i needed to fix the turn off mechanism in it, the steel rod wasn't able to push the other steel rod which was the trigger far enough, so had to use whatever i found useful to stiffen it up a little. Kinda weird, found a match laying around inside it.
perhaps the yellowed white chassis could be uv retrobrighted... I've got a device like this someone gave me years ago but the missing shell stopped me to restore. maybe I should search but they're not cheap as I remember.
I doesn't think, this would be from the 1970's. In this times a pickup with switchable stylus between micro and normal groove was unusual and every pickup has to be compatible to stereo records, real mono pickups destroy stereo records, can move only sideways, not vertically, as required by stereo records.
How did you repair the pickup? In these times it was a crystal pickup, salt crystal what ages, later they replaced it by ceramic piezoelectric pickups. I heard about using the speaker of a greeting card with sound or some transducer from a guitar pickup
I've go the red one of these in absalootley mint condition never bin played and still in original packaging my nan bought it in the 70s and never unboxed it she gave it to me when she dide and I haven't unboxed it so it is still as it was when she baught it in a factory sealed box
A great restoration you made piece to piece. I like your videos and learn new tricks for give new life for my old TVs,Radios and electronic laboratory equipment mostly with tubes (oscilloscopes, signal generators, etc). Congratulations and thanks so much!!
I'm actually impressed thought that plastic was dried out beyond repair... I like the fact there is still old school turntable lovers out there as well...
Geweldig gedaan mooi wou dat ik kon mooi om weer te zien werken nostalgie is mooi groetjes yolanda uit Limburg oud spul is mooier dan dat nieuwe uit Holland ga door er mee
Have you actually got any idea of what you did to me? I owned the very same record player about 50 years ago! Then later on I moved to stereo sound but I never forgot about this “briefcase” record player . Thanks so much for the trip down memory lane.
Merhaba aynı üründen bende var ancak plak yerini siz kaldırdığınızda direkt açılıyor Ben çektiğimde yukarı gelmiyor alttan bir şey tutuyor yardımcı olur musunuz
Merhaba. Muhtemelen pas, kir benzeri bir şeyden dolayı üzerine oturduğu mile yapışmıştır. Hatırladığım kadarıyla üzerinde delik olması lazım. O delikten birkaç damla yağ damlatın. On onbeş dakika sonra yavaş yavaş zorlamaya çalışın, çıkacaktır. Alttan tutan bir şey yok çünkü. Plastik örtüsünü çıkarın. Alttaki metalde iki delik göreceksiniz. Parmaklarınızı o deliklere yerleştirerek yukarı doğru çekmeye zorlamak daha iyi olur.
I've a set of very old Phillip record player. I think it need a total restoration. Is there still a workshop of it ? Where ? (Sumpyuh, Banyumas, Central Java))
I have one of theese, the record spins fine but there is no sound from the speaker. Do you know what could be wrong with it? I can hear a faint sound if i listen close to the needle. Do I need to use both batteries and power cable at the same time? I have only tried to use power cable. All the internal cables look fine. Cant see any leaking condensators.
@@Restomaniac Thank you! Also, it is a very good renovation you have made!! Well done! I had a lot of help from your video when taking my turntable apart. Thank you!
All that grubby stuff all spread out on a fresh white tablecloth? My nan would turn in her grave, what a sweet little model that is tho huh, imagine feeling right at home anywhere with your little nest of 7's and pics stuck up in the back, good job
I had this too, in my version the platter included the 45 rpm adapter, what was pressed down by a record with 1/4" hole. My version was made to be connected with a radio or amplifier.

Hi, You did a great job. I have the same model which I am planning to sell but would like to see if it works first. I don't have a power lead. Can you tell me please if it can be connected directly to the mains through the power socket or if a transformer is required?
Hello, thank you. The European version will work with 220 volts. You should pay attention to this. To test directly without cables, you need to turn on the device and connect. I wouldn't recommend it if you don't have experience in electricity.
good job..!
