That looks more like a toy, than a carjack. Get a real one, bigger one that takes a lot more weight/pressure with a longer arm for more leverage. Also don't use a wood log underneath... use stone/metal so all the force gets directed upwards!

I'm surprised you folks didn't add a precious plastic sleeve between the guides/gate rails & the door (or at the very paint & fill those rails with grease to keep it from rusting solid again).... it would make it a bit more water tight though so it can really hold water during dry summers. That said, I'm glad you were able to finally get it working. Oh, also surprised you didn't use ropes to help pull out dirt & debris from the well (or make it deeper)...
The first thing that comes to my mind is a future project where you setup a hydroelectric energy plant. This could provide clean energy during the rainy seasons where sun is limited. A lot of pottential this land ! PS, The youtuber Kris Harbour has videos about similar setups !

This. People actually hire out small herds of goats here to clean up blackberry brambles on homesteads, meanwhile our local Councils still go around poisoning blackberries instead of just hiring the goats... So we end up with blackberries you can't harvest and eat, herbicides everywhere, and a bunch of hungry goats - going hungry...
Not goats, pigs... They'll eat everything goats will, plus you only need one electric wire to keep them penned in. Pigs will respect an electric fence. Goats? no... Plus, a pig doesn't stink like a goat does. And bacon tastes a hell of a lot better than goat... Side note, with pigs, you DO have to provide them with regular feed as well...
Goats and pigs for vegetation management is a no brainer. Really good suggestion. All of the acia stumps will be sprouting like crazy and the goats will happily browse off that new growth. As they eat, they will also poop and build your soil. Much better than stacking up mountains of leafy tree tops.
I really think that leak in the rock wall of the dam should be fixed. This will cause tons of erosion and make it more unstable in time. My suggestion would be to lay a clay blanket in the reservoir, this will stop the water leaking through the soil and out the wall. (Knowledge of this can be found when searching for custom pond claybed) And if you wanted to fix the leaking at the side of the gate, use silicone kit in the corner of the gate rail. Also the bottom could be fixed by using an angle grinder on the gate or make a custom concrete ridge on the outside, should also stop bowing out of the gate. Also the leaking of the plastic roof could be fixed with tar or liquid rubber. Hope this helps you in any way. :)
Seems to me you could build a second lagoon below the first, possibly adding small weirs downstream that would keep the stream full for longer next year (or the year after) but you need to clean out the top pond more so that you can hold more water but also get to the dam walls and seal them

I can tell I've become emotionally invested in Project Kamp with how excited I got to see a random well discovered and cleaned. Finally started supporting on Patreon, just as the season is wrapping. For the future, remember to clear the vegetation out before you let the lagoon area flood. Otherwise the water kill the plants and they rot. When the water level drops, and the rotting plants are exposed, the smell is horrible. Also, a lot of the soil in the lagoon area looks like dead or rotted wood. Probably be a good idea to dig that stuff up and flush it out. Also, for cleaning out that other well, take a couple saw-horses, a bar, and some rope... Lay the bar across the saw horses, toss the rope over it, and tie it to the bucket. Pull the rope to raise the bucket. Lot easier than using a person and a ladder.
Oh my word, seeing the joy on Dave’s face after fixing the floodgate and watching the lagoon fill up made my day!😂 so sad that Project Kamp S2 is ending next week😭
For your plastic roof. You can get roofing screws for metal roofs they come with a washer that seals itself so any holes you make get sealed too, they come in many lengths so they are suited to a number of jobs. With rusty items that are stuck, use old brake fluid. Pour it onto and into an gaps, leave it a day or so then take a blowtorch to it and it should break the seal. Get some underwater grease that is environmentally friendly that should help seal the gate. Cut a channel under the gate so it can sit into and next summer clean out the pond and you will find the holes. Mix some concrete and fill them and that will stop some of the leaks. If you can get teflon strips and apply them onto the gate and that will help it glide.
Yeah, seeing the rivulets washing your road away is one of those scary design things, you need to put in swales to capture more water upslope, there's bare rock above you and every rain event is washing your soil away, line of earthworks to slow the water and get it soak onto the ground will help not only you but your downslope neighbors as well.
Grease those rails mate! Also - you could calculate the volume of the reservoir and the amount of water needed to keep the creek in healthy order to do a controlled release of water every week or so.
Take a cold chisel down the gap that the door rides in on both sides spreading it open a little then remove rust with a thin grinder wheel and try beating the gate then. Also build some small channels to route the water to the well when it does rain
For safety you need to build a structure around the old well to prevent people from falling in. If you determine that the water is unfit for drinking, then it would be best to fill in the well.
You can use the old beautiful wooden stump at the water source to build a device to lower a bucket with a rope or chain in order to retrieve water a little easier. Keep up the good work. Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪
So for the metal door, instead of just slamming on it with a large hammer and in fact damaging it as you might be afraid to do, placing a board of wood on top and having someone else hold it will have an effect that allows the inertia from the hammer to travel through the wood into the metal plate below, the wood will act as a buffer between the metals as well, helping prevent damage. I do it frequently on other repairs.

By opening the gate and draining the lagoon (as you called it) you've reduced the amount of water available to recharge your aquifer. Basic rules of watershed management in arid seasons dictate storing water high so you continue to feed your aquifer. When the aquifer is recharged, the stream that dried up this summer (became seasonal) will flow year round. You've got to get that gate closed or build a new one. Get out the WD 40 or the like and saturate ALL of the rusted together surfaces. Once you get it released you need to sand and paint the gate and the tracks. The gate is a very important piece of infrastructure. It is so important it's repair can not be held back by principals. Once you've got the rusted areas saturated with a petroleum based product, start working the joints with dental picks and scrape away the iron scale. Never hammer on one side. You are further binding the gate in the opening. Always hammer in the middle and lift from the bottom with a hydraulic jack -a big one in the middle. Your farmer neighbor likely has one he can lend you. I'm thinking 10 tons to give you a sense of scale.
I was thinking instead of big plastic sheets that warp in the sun, maybe it's better to use small "plastic shingles"? Maybe for a next design. Also you want the angle of the roof to have a bit more gradient so that the water can't pool and slide in-between in case the tape doesn't hold. Good luck 🤞
If you need to fix the roof again, it might be a good idea to join the sheets via a guttering section between the flats . Water ideally needs a path to flow and typically isnt great on flat planes.... Grab a cheap winch for the well next time to spare your backs climbing up and down the ladder with heavy materials. I noticed the tree trunk could have acted as a handy place to attach a winch system!
I wouldnt use that tree trunk to lift anything. The forces applied, combined with the leverage effect could loosen the rocks in the wall and that would be bad. I would have used a rope to lift the buckets out instead of the human chain hand lifting process. In the event of a more major clean out, I would build a tripod over the top of the well and place a single pulley or perhaps a 2:1 reduction pulley system. In the event of that happening it's best to pull the rope from directly below the tripod ie; in the well, so as to not risk toppling the tripod.
@@Paul_Au Agreed- anything that could loosen the stones creates a big risk. They could use the time-tested method of building a frame above the well and attaching pulleys.
you could use the thin bramble and mimosa branches to make a wattle fence around the new well for better protection. it would be easy and a lot better than some bark strips and string.

If you ever have the opportunity to redo the dam, I’d recommend using thick wooden planks rather than the sheet metal. Wood does not rust and swells when wet, giving it a better seal. When it dries out it shrinks, making it easier to remove. Yes, it will rot but wood is sustainable and can be reasonably replaced.
Any idea if olive oil might work to waterproof such a gate and also keep it sliding well? I suppose any oil/grease but oilve oil would be a local renewwable resource...
If at some point better water tightness is needed on the dam gate, swap the rails for a larger c-channel and add a HDPE rail set inside of the c-channel. Plastic will seal better.
Pro tip on the containers. The only part that need support is usually (provided the floor is in good shape) is the corners. Just eve the 4 corners and leave the bushes under it to die off. Easier to clear it later when is dried and dead anyways.
You could make another damn under this one, just build a wall similar in shape like the first one, then the extra water that will overflow from first dam will be collected into second reservoir, and unused water will flow in previous natural path. you could get 2 awesome ponds where to cool off on hot days and more water storage. also, can you cover the well so the animals do not fall and drown. also also, idea for episode, make bird nest boxes, you have so many trees and not only are birds singing amazing, they will mask highway sounds and are beneficial to nature! overall loved the episode, loved the people and loved the editing!
For the lagoon/ dam I have one suggestion that will help one with the leaking problem and increasing the capacity of the lagoon aswell, dig up some of the dirt in the lagoon untill you get to a more rocky or solid base instead of just mud and dirt. After that if it is rocky fill it in using concrete or some other alternative, if it’s mud underneath, I would either recommend putting down rocks with concrete or for a more environmentally friendly version use mud and wood ( make sure the wood has been dry out fully before use) to create a bed on the bottom to keep it from leaking aswell as keeping it solid . Love the vids keep it up 👍
Glad you got the gate open. The only other thing I could think of to try would have been a hydraulic tire jack from below and see if you could break it free by lifting up on it. If you've never tried a hydraulic ram pump you should check it out, they're great for moving water uphill with out needing electricity too!
This video was amazing! Your video making skills are so much better and you have covered so much more content in this video. By the way, you have enough water to build dams and use it for hydroelectric. It's much easier than you might think! Also I would reinforce the wall for the dam, it's pretty easy but you can't do it when it's wet as you know, cement needs time to cure. You can reinforce it with stainless steel drilled directly onto the stone (On the inner side would be fine, as it won't look so pretty). It will take some preparation and you might need a bit of help from an engineer and a landscaper/brickie. But you can get this online! There's so many people willing to help on youtube. Good luck lads/lasses! I'll miss you through the winter. There's also compounds you can use to seal the roof! Look into sealants, I know harsh chemicals aren't ideal but it's better than using wayyyy more recycled stuff that has taken energy to produce. It's a small amount of sealant vs massive amounts of energy potentially.
I will add my vote to the bandwagon suggesting Hydroelectric. Good steady and clean energy during the coldest season for heat and hot water would go a long way toward making the kamp more livable.
The ketchup, I'm sure it would work. You just need to build a watertight box around the whole gate, all of it. Then pour in like 100 to 200 litres of ketchup. Let it soak for an hour. Then attach a couple of sanders to the large plate and run them for an hour straight (the vibration breaks the rust up over time), then try lifting the gate with that carjack again (which would require storing all the ketchup). If that doesn't work, repeat the prior steps until the gate is unstuck. I'd be surprised if it didn't work after about a week, maybe just a few days! Of course, taking the easy way out that you did also works. But you'll never be able to say you used ketchup to fix your gate, sadly.
Your waterfall area looks pretty all around. The yellow is a good color for the gate stuff. But I would maybe follow the creek and define the path you want the water to take, more. Find all the paths it current takes, maybe clean out anything in it's way so it can't get catch branches and dam up.
It's amazing to see the lagoon being full of water. Let's see if you can keep it full during summer so you can cool down in it. Also I hope you've found the other Gopro 😉
You should dig out the mud and debris from the top reservoir there looks like a lot of stuff, it could hold a lot more water and be a better pool for summer when it comes back around and also To find the leaks in the wall cut some squares out of blue tarp and put them under the water near where you think they will be, the tarp should get sucked into the crack and be easy to see
Great content Thank you .... try keeping the gate mechanism well greased / lubricated ... also try a rubber seal along the bottom of the gate or even cut a deeper channel for the door to sit in .
Another great video! Id suggest greasing the rails to aid opening and closing the gate. It would also be worth using the angle grinder with a brick cutter attachment to create a groove for the gate to sit into. Might help with the loss underneath. Also an screw type hydro would work well here and provide power in the winter
Suggest you build a series of downstream stone weirs from the lagoon to capture the lost water from the lagoon - the lagoon now becomes your dam feeding new down stream smaller lagoons. Just follow the natural fall and swales of the land to create a series of smaller ponds to irrigate the fields along the creek path and bring the water closer to your camp.
And for next dry season, if the lagoon walls hold I suggest that you fix the leaks and holes in the lagoon walls and deepen the lagoon by removing the silt to enlarge the water holding capacity of the lagoon all the best you are so positive and encouraging and bit by bit fixing up the land

Although it's already too late, always be aware of methane or other gases, which are heavier than the air!!! I am often working in such shafts and we always use a ventilation system built by our own to make sure that we have enough air to breath! We just built a system with a 20cm diameter fan on which we mounted a hose with the same diameter which we hang into the bottom of the shaft. We start the fan, wait for some minutes to bring in fresh air and then we climb down... low costs and much effect
i really hope you properly rebuild the lagoon and scrape out all the mud and repair all the walls and make it super nice to swim in again, would like to see that x

In the future, you may consider installing a rampomp at the reservoir, which you can make from pipe fittings and 2 non-return valves. These works on water hammer, without electricity.

use a hydraulic car jack on each corner to free up then switch to other side and do the same then put jack in middle and begin to lift whole thing. use pipe/wood to make the height up. with a hammer tap sides as you are doing this it will free up. if by chance it still stubborn use a grinder and go down the sides cutting a channel on both sides.(do this both sides of guide x4. I have done this before and its a hard process but with patience and time it will come out. once it is out use grinder and clean up the channels on both sides and the metal panel edges also to remove rust build up. (grease and replace. Good vibes from all of us at the "dome project" NZ.
Excellent results all around! The floodgate I'd wait until end of summer next year and maybe grind to fit the bottom of the gate to the floor? But it's a great result all the same, and the leaks may be able to be fixed (if you can find the apertures inside the lagoon) with drizzling some sealing cement and concrete slurry down there? You could maybe pump some water backwards up those spaces to see where they come up. Sorry you lost one of the gopros, it'll probably turn up in the next year and still be perfectly fine after charging. Tough little things they are. Also loved the new well, it'll be useful for agriculture. And stoked that the recycled plastic roof is now dry - and you also have one of the ruins livable. You've achieved so much in a few years!
Maybe consider lashing together some ladders out of those mimosas - keep them stationed in strategic spots around the property (like the wells) so you guys don't have to lug them across the countryside from base.
the water barrier sheet is being compressed by the two walls leaning towards the base of the water channel. when you grinded the middle you took out the equivalent of the grinding disk. the sheet seals itself against the rail or a gasket on the rail just by the water pressure. there's potencial in there to build a hidro turbine. check out kris harbour would be a great way to offset the propane dependency (even higher during winter). all the excess energy would go to an electric water heater

An Overshot Waterwheel can generate energy with an 80 - 90% efficiency. Not only could you generate electricity but also mechanically run a sawmill or turn a stone to grind grains for flour.
My husband cleaned all his flooded metal tools after the flood with vinegar. They wiped clean no problem. But he had to soak them in vinegar. You’re just pouring it on. You need to find a way to soak it in vinegar. Maybe make a. Peel with that cement stuff y’all made for the shower. Narrow strips that only enclose the sides of the metal. Get the door off bring it back to base camp and soak that in vinegar. Then treat them when all vinegar is off with flood petrol paint.

My advise to you people is to buy a slachtblad a 3 point star for your buschwacker, this is made from metal and it is more easy to cut down the busches and bramen. It also does not use plastic string as I saw you guys using a grass cutter attachment to cut things. Perhaps I am saying something you already know 😁 but i just try to help.
Great Stuff Pond and stone would be an easy way to fix holes and cracks throughout the dam wall. Would also help and aid in some off the tough to get to leaks as it's an expanding eco friendly foam
Nice to see you found another Well. You referred to using the more modern one for drinking water; Please properly seal the lid on this Well as you left big gaps after you had removed the cover & this is very unsafe, especially for drinking water! With open gaps around the side, critters & animals can fall in & drown & contaminate your water supply. Lovely videos though, thankyou for uploading them 👍😁
In the next summer time when you want to elaborate on the watergate it would probably be helpfull to install an (only in german eine Gummilippe) a rubberseal. For cheap a bicicletire but there are some for that kind of application. So it is not sooo important to have a level floor of the watergate. And for more (hebel) and less force a metalbar to stick in the circular turn thing so u can use less force for thw same movement. Enjoy the rain
Nice episode! Let's hope the lagoon walls don't break. Please place some thin tree trunks with sone branches in the new well for animals to be able to climb out. Also use some rope to tie go pro's to a tree when filming mini floods ;-)
If I were there... I think I would have left the steel gate in two pieces. Overlap them with new steel and secure them with bolts. You're going to have the same problem again... maybe in 5 or 10 years... and those years will go by a LOT faster than you think! Still, I'm sure it's very satisfying to have it operational again. Keep LOTS of grease in the gap, maybe you can delay the inevitable that way. 10 or 12 grease fittings on the channel iron might help, but with all the water around, there probably is no way to prevent rust apart from operating the gate once per month. I know you get endless unsolicited building advice, so first let me say that I don't really know anything! But I do think I would have probably gone for much stronger screws on the plastic panels first (to ensure secure mechanical connection), THEN sealed up the gaps with a caulking gun and roofing silicon. Never the less, it's very interesting to see your efforts an results :)
Naval jelly. I used to watch the old timers get rid of bad rust in vehicles with it. No clue if it will help, but it's a rust dissolver. Make sure to follow the instructions.
I would clean the track with a wire wheel or a thin grinder blade to widen the track a little . I would then put a car jack under the gate and try carefully to unjam it . I believe it needs to travel evenly or it will jam at an angle . best of luck from USA
