Julie's farm is nothing new. We hear of these terms: regenerative, organic, no till; but the reality is that these methods have been around for a very long time. Using these methods, Julie has been able to operate the longest continuous CSA in the country, starting in 1992. While farming is Julie's chosen hobby, her heart and soul desire to feed her community and not just with food. She loves to bring people together, share a meal, and help each other.

For a small back yard garden you can soak woodchips in a 55 gallon barrel of compost tea for a month. This well inoculate the chips and they will get saturated with the tea and release it when laying on top of your garden bed.

That's not how it works, Most beneficial microbes are aerobic, meaning like us they will die with a lack of oxygen. Compost Tea will breed pathogenic microbes if left un aerated for that long as well. If you soak Chips that long you are Loading them with Anaerobic loving bacteria(the bad guys). eventually if the chips drain, microbes from garden bed will Reinoculated the chips but soaking for a month is not helping speed anything along.

Oh yes!! I felt terrible as I pulled up the driveway and saw she was on all fours out in the garden with other workers pulling weeds 😅 and as soon as I was finished up she hugged me goodbye and went back to work! Absolutely loved meeting her! ❤️

I’ve often thought about a community getting together to produce what they can without spending too much time with growing different crops. Especially if they have busy lives/careers. Like one person grows potatoes one year then leeks the next then carrots the next. Another grows garlic then corn then potatoes the next year. Another grows spring brassicas then garlic. Rotating throughout the community. Rotating nets and row covers too. Or rotate a milk cow and calf through a community of 1 + acres of lawn/pasture. Others supplying grass clippings or autumn leaves to make compost for whoever needs the mulch that year.

That would be so great!! I’m sure community’s like this exist somewhere. We have found general sharing throughout some communities. For example, in our farm tour with True Grit in North Carolina, we talked about this and how they give away extra produce to neighbors and the same happens to them.

Great interview. We used to allow someone to cut hay on our field, however, neither they nor we ever put nutrients on the field, and now the soil is poor. Lesson learned.

A CSA is an acronym for “Community Supported Agriculture”. The way it typically works is a customer pays a price up front to a farmer in exchange for a “box” or a “bag” of food, usually whatever vegetables or fruit or sometimes meat that is in season at that moment, and is typically delivered weekly. Many farms put their own spin on it for frequency or produce type. It’s a way that the customer can help the farmer with spring expenses and then receive the benefits of that investment throughout the season.
