BR '8P' 71000 4-6-2 'Duke of Gloucester' was an occasional performer on the Sunday 'Torbay Express' runs between 2010 and 2012 and here are seven that I managed to capture with my trusted Camcorder.
Starting at Bristol Temple Meads station on August 21st 2011 ‘she’ has Brush Type ‘4’ 47815 (D1748) 'Great Western' idling behind her tender whilst making a spirited start for the Devon coast. About 13 miles down the line just north of Yatton station we catch her speeding across the fields and over the Middle Rhyne Bridge on September 4th 2011. Moving to the station now on June 5th 2011 when footbridge repairs have treated us to a temporary structure for a lucky shot with 47815 again in place and again we mustn’t blink, then a little further south to a farm crossing, still in sight of the station, we get a longer look without a ‘47’ present on August 5th 2012.
Next we are down at Worle Junction where the loop line to Weston Super Mare branches off. Again in sole charge the Duke makes light work of this manoeuvre on July 18th 2010, and we follow her round to Weston Super Mare station where she is seen arriving beside an HST that preceded her down from Bristol and is now waiting to return on September 19th 2010, a stirring start is made, but I have to apologise for some poor panning. Finally, we find ourselves at Uphill Junction on July 25th 2010 getting a great view of the ensemble from the lovely high Brunel Bristol and Exeter arch north of the site of Bleadon and Uphill station.
As the passage of the Middle Rhyne Bridge was so swift I have included a slow motion sequence of this which I think is worth a watch.
Here’s hoping we get the Duke back on the main line again soon.

It’s good to know that after someone bothered to give her the modifications she needed, she can finally make Riddles proud, god bless him.

Baffle-plate upside down. 'Official' sabotage or an accident we'll never know.

@@paulcaswell2813 Sabotage. You don't give an express engine the blastpipe of a Dean Goods, for God's sake.

Yes. Its remarkable how a team of enthusiasts have turned an originally poor performer into one of the best locos out there. The BR workshops with all their decades of experience should have been hard to beat.
@GayCheesetuber
@GayCheesetuber Год назад
@@AndyM_323YYY it wasn't poor craftsmanship that hurt DoG. It was the BR management and Swindon Drawing Office who changed the design without Riddles' approval or even knowledge

@@GayCheesetuber My apologies if I have directed the blame in the wrong direction. I would be interested to know more about what happened if you have the details.

I remember seeing her at Didcot a number of years ago. She was in she’d and not in steam but looked a magnificent loco even then. Fabulous that it has been brought back from the dead and even more outstanding that enthusiasts found the reason original crews hated her and brought her to the performance Riddles wanted. Well done to all and a great vid

The Duchess locomotives have always been a favourite of mine. But this loco is tremendously impressive, really good looking and now finally has the perfomance to match. Great video 👍

Wow what speed and Power. The Duke shows that a Fleet of 8P Pacific's [ in the Dukes Current mold ] as Riddles would have wanted would have Completed both the Duchesses and East Coast Pacifics. Pity it Never Happened.

One this that’s nice about England’s steam railroads is that they let them open up and go to their operating speeds. They often don’t do that in America. For example UP 844 used to run upwards of 100mph in service, but they haven’t brought it above 80 in a long time.
@johnkeepin7527
@johnkeepin7527 Год назад
Not quite. Most of them are limited to 75, and some 60 mph. In the early days, when it became possible for them to operate again, they were all “officially” limited to 60 - but I’ve been on one or two that were a bit more flexible, as it were.

Britain’s finest ever steam locomotive. Four hundred of these could have set back the dieselisation program by at least eight years. No need for Westerns, Hymeks, Brush Type 4s or English Electric Type 4s, or Sulzer Type 4s. A direct transition to 25kv electric power could have taken place on all the principle main lines barring the Southern 3rd Rail system. Ah well, it’s nice to dream

Knowing how free-steaming other Riddles boilers were makes me think that the baffle-plate being upside-down wasn't carelessness originally, but official sabotage. Riddles himself couldn't understand the poor steaming of the loco.

@@paulcaswell2813 The corrupt board of BR didn't want the viability of the 8P class becoming public knowledge. Hell, she was more powerful than the diesels that were meant to replace her!

I have often wondered if the backup diesel loco is powered to assist the steam loco, or is the motor switched off, there fore a dead weight to the steamer.
