Melissa, I do a lot of chipping here in my woods with "Shreddie Kruger" my chipper and in order to save fuel and steps I always pre-stage and stack the "to be chipped" wood and branches before starting the chipper. Just like how you prestack wood to be split. It makes the job faster, safer and much more energy-efficient too. Gotta love a chipper it is my fave forest maintenance tool. You go girl! You are a woodswoman after my own heart.

If you set up the tractor where you feed directly into it (generally at the base of the tree), it's easier to handle the pieces and feed fat end first. You set up at the opposite end (toward the top of the tree) and had to invert each piece prior to feeding it .

I need one of them! I mulch all of my gardens and paths with chips, but I buy them by the truck load, kinda like Mike buys rocks! I've been burning all the brush, keeping 38 acres of woods clean is a full weekend job, and we have wind/winter damage all the time. Maybe I should be chipping them, now that I'm retired and have more time! Who says us women can't do those jobs....with the right tools, of course! Go Melissa!

NICE WORK Melissa! New toy!! Ann and I have a modest 10 HP Chipper/Grinder, which can handle branches up to three inches in diameter; it works faster than I do, so before I turn it on I take the time to arrange the pile with the buts facing the machine. To be more efficient I stack the branches as I remove them from the main limb and keep them two to three steps from the chipper's intake. I'm always amazed at the amount of wood chips that I get from just a few branches. Great video, thumbs up. Oh I wouldn't let Mike see how much fun you are having...he might want to charge you money.

Chief Chipper - Love the work and I have a great idea for you. You likely have nice plants you are trying to grow. If you make a mound of this chipper somewhere and then start adding Coffee Grounds to the top - Keep doing it and add all the time. The worms will come and start to convert the stack into fertilizer and lots of worms that feed trees. So after several months - try to take a shovel of the bottom - and see what you get. If decomposing with worms - dress that about your plants. We had a mound of just coffee grounds and always had fishing worms. Take car CC with the Morgans!

Great video. After one deposits the limb in the chipper, it is safest to twist one's body toward the chipper. In Melissa's case, in a counterclockwise direction. That way, if a branch hooks onto one's sleeve or other part of clothing, one will be helping to release it as one twists.

Melissa, Thank you for expressing yourself properly. You sounded like a careful and well trained operator for the saw and chipper. Some of your earlier narration lack the confidence to match your competence. You were a Novice with the splitter etc, but a smart and careful one. I'd rather have a careful Novice than a careless " Expert " . You are a fine example for anyone tackling similar tasks, especially the Ladies. You are a very impressive woman. Please remember you are opening up areas other ladies may not imagine themselves exploring.. There is a great difference between expressing due caution and unwarranted doubt. In this video you got everything right. It is clear the job did not challenge the chipper or its lovely operator. You can add a mulch line to the firewood and lumber. God Bless you.

Great job Melissa. I sure could have used one of those years ago. Could I make a suggestion. Unless you want a pile of chips at a certain location for some reason I would suggest you move the tractor occasionally and also move the direction of the chute so all the chips are not all in one pile. In other words, spread the compost around the forest. That way more trees benefit from the decaying wood and also if the chips are too deep it also inhibits growth in that area.
@95SLE
@95SLE 4 года назад
That is one nice chipper. If you keep chipping all the paths back into the wooded areas will be covered with chips. I have found that chips do well in the woods but in open areas the rains tend to wash them into piles.

A suggestion I'd like to offer: I don't know the time lapse between when the trees were felled and when Melissa delimbed and chipped them, but during the winter months until spring green-up, I would recommend leaving them on the ground for a week or so before chipping. If you have wintering deer on your property, give them a crack at the buds; particularly the maples which are favored winter browse. Same for hares and/or rabbits. I notice a general lack of understory on your woodlot which is where deer's natural forage comes from. Tops from felled trees are often a nutritional boost (depending on species) for wintering deer giving them access to forage not otherwise available. Up in Maine, the sound of a chainsaw often acts like a magnet that draws deer in; especially during hard, prolonged winters (if the snows aren't too deep). On the other hand, I'm guessing there may be a lot of supplemental feeding in your area which may detract deer from natural foods (not necessarily a good thing). Cheers!

Good morning, Mike and Melissa. Just gotta confess. When I'm working like that, I don't have a nice smile on. I'm one of those guys who has his tongue stuck out in some goofy contortion or his mouth gaped open. Never realize it until I have finished and then it is too late to correct yourself. Anne used to be my cheerful reminder when she would look at me and try to mimic my facial expression. LOL I would concentrate on keeping my mouth closed for a few minutes and then forget. Had great times working together. Melissa, I couldn't help but smile as I watched you working with a big smile on your face. Good job. Others have commented that there won't be a twig left in the woods. Yeah, I know when you have a new tool like that, you just keep looking for another excuse to use it. And when the pile of limbs is gone, your scanning the area to find just one more.

Put your chips to work up there in PA. I have been using our chips now for several years to cultivate mushrooms (no, not the magic ones) and since I can produce custom chips, i.e. poplar, beech, maple, oak etc. I have a few varieties going. Grey Oysters (they like poplar) Shiitake (they prefer white oak) and Blue Oysters (they like a little mixture of hardwoods) Lion's Mane etc etc Anyway, Melissa can start her own farm and enjoy the chips over and over again. Nice work on the trails by the way.

Someone was loving that chipper! You are going to have the property looking like a park. I like the fact that chaps are open on the back. lol

Love seeing Melissa smile while working. It's only mildly disturbing that a chipper is the source of her amusement. I just started following a couple days ago and enjoying the videos. Many thanks.
