Kalash women wear distinctive colorful attire, and the community values music, dance, and nature worship. Each culture is different. Men provide security, build houses, maintain those houses, assist in raising children, putting in the crops, raising animals, sacrificing those animals. Amazing how in the West women say they don't need men but when western woman go to Eastern countries they want to ask what do the men do!

When I visited the Kalash valley /region (more than 30 years ago) there were no hotels etc at all. We had to camp out. My friends and I hiked through Rumbor, Birir and Bimburet. You could walk all day and not see any vehicle , and only a few locals . Really serene times. (A number of Afghans moved over this side of the Hindu Kush mountains during the Afghan-Soviet War and some came later to escape the Taliban ; however, the earliest immigrants were ethnic Kalash people from the Afghan side, back in the 19th century, there they were forcibly converted by the forces of the Afghan Emir/King and their area taken over and renamed 'Nuristan', that side they previously used to call it 'Kafiristan' , in a derogatory sense of infidels. The history of the Kalasha is really sad to read particularly over the last 200 years . You should read the early accounts by English explorers like Biddulph and all . Though the Kalasha do still face some discrimination and prejudice today from mullahs and ultra -conservative Muslims in Chitral, they're lucky to be still holding out against these pressures and the challenges of modernity itself, to their ways. How many of them are still left ? 4000? 5000? Maybe 6000? How long will they continue with the ancient ways that they've carried into the 21st century? I wonder )
