My how things change. My 72-hour pack was an ALICE, large - 1 each and the packing list didn’t stray much regardless of the mission set. Maybe more 7.62 for the MG or mortar rounds, but otherwise pretty much the same. Such is the life of an Airborne Infantryman

I like the poncho liner idea, specially with a small unit where you're at 50% watch most the time, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who carries a sewing tape measure.

If you are taking photos of something or someone for Intel purposes, it's good to have a unit of measure in the photo. It assists people looking at the photo to see the scale of something.

Generally if you ever made a video about sleeping in the field in "non-permissive" conditions I'd really enjoy it. Cheers!

when i was AF security forces we had to have a 72 hour bag ready to respond if an aircraft went down somewhere (think mechanical problems forcing it to land immediately, think ospreys which have lots of mechanical problems.) and were called on to provide security around the aircraft. unfortunately i only got to do it once. since i was a GS they had to pay me overtime and so they usually picked an active duty member to go if they had the choice.

@PreparedAirman Год назад
I tether them into the pack or helmet when not in use. Personally, I have never keep them on me. Realistically, during an actual "24-hour" Op you have the potential to use them 50% of the time. The other 50% s waisted weight and space. I don't like having a dedicated 2lbs pouch filled with something that's useless during the day. They stay in my pack until evening.

For a shell extractor, use a paint can opener. Keep it paracorded or bungied to your kit. Seconds matter and if we are worried about it being "fatal", having to dig it out your pack or falling back to where you doffed it can be even more so fatal

What is your typical ammo loadout? As a SAW gunner in the Rangers, I carried nothing less than 1,000 rounds on me, and another 1,000 rounds on my ruck, and everyone in my squad each carried 500 rounds for the SAW. You might think it’s excessive, but it’s better to have it and not need it, than it is to need it and not have it. As we both know, things can go sideways really fast.

Nice loadout PA as always well thought out and gives us good pointers to set up our own. But as for the bag itself I actually picked one up but was less than impressed. Nice features and layout, but mine came with severe fraying on the mesh even though I bought it new with tags. Hitting it with a lighter didn't alleviate the issue. Despite Eagle's "Lifetime warranty", they said since I bought it from a dealer (I wasn't going to pay 3x as much buying it from Eagle's website) I would get charged for the repairs. They did offer to cover shipping on their end at least. I'll post a video on it sometime. My bag is a sample of one, could be the bag is durable as hell, but from talking with them it doesn't seem like they were surprised by my issue.

Yes, it would change. This is a very specific kit designed for what I do, and with this kit, I have resupply abilities brought forth by the logistics system of the military. If I was not a part of the military, this pack would unfortunately get heavier with food and water procurement equipment.

How much does it weigh? You’re running this with a belt and plate carrier? How much does the total Loadout weigh?
@PreparedAirman
@PreparedAirman 7 месяцев назад
My Plate carrier fully loaded is 24lbs. My pack weights 25 lbs without water and my rifle weights about 8 lbs. Total weight being about 60lbs I don't run a belt setup if I am mechanized which is majority of the time. Also my pack will not dismount the vehicle if I am assaulting or maneuvering. So, total realistic operational weight is 36lbs of baseline gear.

No hate just responing based on eIxperance, lots of good and interesting ideas, I'm pretty old school UK ex military guy. So bombs bullets batteries and essentials only. I See a lot of redundant kit taking up space and adding weight. My experance of airborne ops is probably different but we could not mount anything on the outside of our bags. I ike the two poncho liners and one tarp but for the same weight you could use a jungle sleeping bag and a tarp add your cold weather kit and you would have a good level of thermal insulation. Water if you are able to resupply locally then one filter and a means of chemical decontamination purification is all you need. No team kit, I assume you work in a small team and with mostly the same guys. Share the load. Very little space for all the extra crap the squad needs bombs bullets and batteries observation and targeting kit etc. One team weapons cleaning kit, one repair kit one posable kit. Frees up space for vital kit bombs bullets and batteries! I didn't see a first / self aid kit. Blisters and small cuts headaches from dehydration all suck. You talk about working from a FOB but there was nothing in your kit to help build or camouflage it. There was nothing in your kit to help camouflage yourself. Your respirator is no use in your backpack I don't know what you policy is but we had to be able to put our masks on with in 9 seconds. Regardles of what you may think it sucks to be a chemical casualty and it impacts the mission. The battle board nice for vehicleborne operations but its just weight and space for infantry or airborne ops nice but as you say not nessassery. Food, calories are a rubbish way to determine what food to take on an operation a calorie is just a measurement of the heat generated when a certain weight of food is burnt. Your food is arguably the second most important factor in determing how well you function physically and mentally on ops. Warm drinks hot food and the pure joy derived from them is without doubt one of the key elements when working in a cold or cold wet environments. Never underestimate the benifit of hot sweet drinks like chocolate or English tea. You were carrying survival rations I would almost double the size of that ration pack and the divide it to day 1 snack meal day 1 main meal and hot drinks. Day 2 breakfast meal etc... day three breakfast and snack. I like the trail mix we add a lot of chocolate and dried fruit and call it gorp. In some cases it's all I've eaten for a week or so. Always have a means to heat your food and drink mre frh are OK but honestly for a few quid you can do much better with a gas burner and a metal mug. Kit organisation managment if that setup works. Cool but I would recomend realy think about packing your kit so what you need is available at the time you need it. When mentoring new guys, who had all the nice civilian purchase gear. I would remind them that if you are out on ops and you lose your gear for whatever reason. The QM is only going to replace the issued items. I've seen guys with garbage sacks with their kit in because all their expensive kit didn't fit into the pack given to them as a replacement when their civilian bag failed. I know it feels and looks cool but the reality is if it breaks, fails or gets lost its your problem and if deployed you don't always get it replaced.

I understand we're your coming from but I left the video vague on purpose. I can't get into the exact reasons or METTTC but alot is locally and Mission specific. I also purposely left out my mission specific gear. We do have team kits fill with alot of goodies. I understand the gas mask concern but it's based off of our environment and potential threat rating. Lastly, it all comes down to cost vs what I actually issued. I could dump 5k of personal funds into this bag just to have it removed because it's not SOP.

Any recommendations on a portable range finder?
@PreparedAirman
@PreparedAirman Год назад
I don't have any particular brands that I would recommend, but I would recommend a unit that is rated for 3000+ meters. Pretty much the rule is whatever the device says it can do" Half the distance". The manufacturer rates the distance on the best case seneiro, not the normal or average. So if you buy a 1000m range finder 90% of the time it will only work out to 500m. That's been my experience with MANY different types.
