In this video, i teardown my first 722.9 to do an overhaul. This car did not move when cold, found an issue with the K3 clutch which is common clutch for foward and reverse.
Awesome Video! Thank you for sharing!! If I am just doing the pump o ring do I need to remove the pan and valve body etc? I was under the impression that I could just remove the bell housing alone to get the pump out. I went this route and the bell housing and stator begin to slide out of the case then stop and it feels like something is holding it and won't let it out.
Hi Gary, does the valve body have to come first before you separate the bell housing on this 722.9 unit? All I'm doing is replacing the pump which failed on a 2008 e350 with 128k. Thanks! actually I now see you already answered that question further down in the comments (b3 tube /so yes)
There's only one hole for both drain and fill, when you drain you take a screwdriver and tap the plastic leveler pipe off only then it will drain all the fluid from the pan, and always replace it with a new one before reinstalling the oil pan, never reuse old one or you may encounter with leveling problems due to sealing problems. Don't forget there's a tiny drain plug on the Torque converter makes completely replacing the trans fluid so much easier and only use Shell ATF 134 (red fluid) for 722.9.
Very helpful sir, my 2012 s550 stopped shifting when I was driving on the freeway so I took the transmission out and disassemble it to find that the oil pump small gear ⚙️ inside was missing two small pieces. Good news I found them but the bad news is Mercedes sell the pump for 800 😑 cost more than a used transmission.
This happens to me on my 06 E500 722.9 when I get on the highway but since my new commute is 15 minutes through streets only it hasn’t done that, would I have the same problem or would it be my conductor plate
also on these transmissions never reuse the pan bolts because they are made of aluminum and are one time torque to yield. You were just using them to hold the pan in place in the video but when actually reinstalling you do not want one to shear on you... ask me how I know lol
+nicholas elias Yes, correct. I think new ones come in the overhaul kit, and i have changed conductor plates on these units as well, they come with pan and valvebody bolts. Thanks for watching. Gary
I have an infiniti Q50 2.0t with the same transmission, just plugged in my diagnostic tool despite being serviced at the dealer and i got P2783 fault code for the torque converter temperature overheating, the sad part just got my warranty out 2 months back
Hi Gary, you probably already know this by now, but if you poke a small pick up through the fill hole you can push the level spout over thus you have a drain, then it just clips back in place when you have the sump off. Also I noticed the the fluid that drained out appears to be normal red ATF, I thought these boxes were supposed to run on the expensive Mercedes blue automatic transmission fluid, can they be run on normal ATF? Great video by the way it helped me loads.
Gary, really liked the video, you clearly are an expert. I have an '08 R350 with this 7 speed transmission. MB recommends a fluid change at 39k miles and then never... The '09 on the other hand is recommended to get a change every 40k. What are your thoughts? Did anything change mechanically between different versions or model years of this transmission? I was warned by a dealer service adviser that if the fluid is changed after lots of miles it might cause the transmission to fail. Is this true and what is the failure mode? My car has 115k miles and previous owner had fluid changed (according to MB records) at 55k. What would be your advice? Thanks.
All 722.9 transmission from 2004 to 2012 have a 40k miles interval. Newer ones moved to a 70k miles interval. I think 40k miles is the perfect interval for these transmissions.
@Gary Ferraro Thanks Gary.. I have the 07 E550....Can you please describe a flare....I don't feel the car slipping, or RMP bouncing around ,but can hear a clicking when I accelerate a little better than normal. Usually in the early gears...2to3 in Comfort Mode, and sometimes very very lightly in 3to4 in Sport Mode....just had the fluid and filter changed a couple weeks ago, all OEM...was present even before the change....no more no less. Also no codes have ever popped up. 07 E550 109,000 Thank you in advance for any input from anyone out there
A flared shift is when the rpm will shoot up inbetween shifts, this happens because the clutch or band that is being applied , gets applied late, so the rpm will shoot up for a moment until the clutch or band comes on
@@GaryFerraro 👍🏼. Thanks Gary...Any idea where the subtle clicking sound comes from when I apply good acceleration ? My RPMs aren't jumping around when I get the clicking, but it does occur only when accelerating well and usually in 2nd and after shifting into 3rd (all while I'm Comfort Mode) A lot less of a sounds and for a much shorter period when in Sport Mode. In either case, I say it not a flare as described since there is no RPM jumping and doesn't feel like I'm losing any traction, but does sound like a very subtle/soft version of putting a playing card on the bike are a kid.., but only lasting a second or two depending the amount of gas I apply to the pedal. And though I get zero check lights/codes on my dash, I wish it was something I could eliminate with simply new solenoids? Wishing someone out here might be familiar with my issue. Thanks again in advance for you input! 👍🏼 👍🏼
can I email you please a pic please? Need help identifying two small square shiny metal pieces appearing to be teeth. One fell out as I separated the bellhousing, the other was stuck in the notch of the torque converter shaft. Car has no Drive or Rev and no fluid pressure and no fault codes. Update: Turns out the 2 square metal pieces were from the pump to make it spin so pump was broken
+احمد محمد I will keep that in mind for the future, at the present time the shop is so busy my customers cars are with me for almost 10 days. I am editing the video for the valvebody, should be up in a few days. Gary Thanks for watching
Gary Ferraro hey Gary how are you doing I have a nag1 from a Chrysler 300c 5.7 I wanted to ask you the car today when I was driving felt like it slipped then it started to make a loud whining noise and stoped going itbjust alowley revved up and whined. The car won’t engage in any gear not and just whines does this mean my transmission is blown? Or could it be something else what would you say since I see you know your nags
Back in the 70's. my American made cars have this similar issue. The car won't move unless I start and warm the engine for about 30 minutes. Maybe Benz copy the American made cars or this benz transmission was made by American company.
Gary, I couldnt pick up the name of the company that repairs the conductor plates. Was it spectrum? Also, do you know if there is difference between 2007 w211 320cdi and 2007 w211 420cdi gearboxes? Both are using 7g-tronic.
About 3... my father has a torque converter company and I been rebuilding torque converters since I was 18 and recently started getting in too the transmissions and really enjoy it
Amazing video hats off to you, is this common thing with 722.9 i have used ml320 love the shape, would this be start of clutch plates slight over rev/lost on maybe gear 3rd feel, bad this 40,000 miles am on 90,000
Im not so sure a plate swap can be done with a VGS 1 I usually do a whole plate with valvebody, but when i order one, it has to be done with the vin number, i don't think just using any plate will work and it has to be programmed
Hi what about if you have a parts car and originally you have vgs1 transmission in your car and you swap out both transmission and valve body from a parts car that has vgs2-3 would that work and would you still need programming with the new set ?
Great video Gary! I have an 06 R350 with the 722.9. While driving on the highway, in D of course, it stopped transmitting power to the wheels... it felt like I was in neutral. Holding/pressing the throttle made the revs climb, but I was gradually losing speed. Towed it home and pulled code P0730 which is incorrect gear ratio. Ever run into this? Any ideas? Just did fluid flush and re set the level, but no change. I can change the transmission into D, R, N P and the individual forward gears, but it's like there's no connection. Clutches? Torque converter? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Subscribed!!!!!
Thanks for the reply Gary! When I select a gear, I hear the electric selector making a sound, however I don't feel engagement if I understand you correctly. I hear the selector for D N P and R, but if I go through the forward gears from 1 to 6 I don't hear or feel anything.
Awesomenesss Prime Hello, If this happened all of a sudden with no warning signs, something inside the transmission probably broke, as I mentioned, it's very common for the pump to go bad.
So I am in the process of reassembling mine at the moment. However, I am stuck. I can’t get the case back on because it seems like the K3 clutch drum won’t align with the B2 Drum in the back of the case. Do you have any advice?
I usually line up the clutch disc's (with a small pick or scribe) hold the planetary gear and try to set it down in place, may have to turn a little but try lining all the disc's up
Hi, I’m not sure I can get answers here but when I putting back valve body/conductor plate to transmission, should I plug B3/2 valve on transmission or valve body?
@@GaryFerraro yes, the small yellow/ish tube that related to eco/sports mode. Im putting valve body and conductor plate back, and currently that valve is plugged at transmission housing
thanks Gary for your clip and also for helpful explanation ,,,,just I want to ask you if you have any clip like that for 09D transmission or if you have any site that I can check that. thanks
Hi Gary, thanks for the video. i have a c230 with a 722.9 when i drive and when it shifts it keeps a high rev and delays to shift for about 5 to 7 sec, what might be the problem? when it shifts it forces the gear making it uncomfortable because of the high revs
@@paulmudzingwa8611 one thing you can check are the solenoid o-rings, they tend to tear, i had a flared shift once that ended up being faulty solenoids, you can swap solenoids as a test to see if anything changes, swap color for color
Hello I need some help. I've got w221 s320 cdi 2008 with gearbox 722.9 stucked in P position. On the screen famous message "vehicle not in P position" and "drive to workshop without changing gears". 3 mechanics diagnosed ISM module so I've taken it out and sent for repair. Unfortunately the module was tested and appeared it is working just fine. Have you gou got any experience with this kind of problem. Anyone can point where to look at? Thank you
@@GaryFerraro i bought this car with this problem but most likely the battery was dead and they replaced with new. Even the new wan was flat when I got it.
@@GaryFerraro pomp should be good but now just trying to inspected and having a hard time to pull out the torque converter,I pull out other converters but first time on a 722.9
722.9 transmission on MB W211, a “rough shift” when putting the car in reverse and when shifting to drive. there is no problem in shifting while driving. flex disc on both side are replaced and fine. can you please help me?
My 2010 E350 has almost like a supercharger whine under acceleration and deceleration does this have anything to do with the transmission. (It is not the Power Steering I checked)
My 2007 E350 made a similar noise. Turned out to be a work bushing in the trans pump. Replaced that bushing (which requires pulling the trans), and it was silent. I know later models replaced the bushing with a needle bearing, but not sure when that change happened.
@@GaryFerraro I have a Mercedes Benz ml350 2006. At first I had a faulty VGS. My VGS happens to be VGS 3. First VGS2 was programmed and vehicle was stucked in gear2 signal not available for actual and target gears. I kept getting different codes on two of the vGS2 installed. Installed a VGS3 now and I had a brake solenoid failure issue. Do you have an idea of what's wrong. See no reason why I should have different codes from what I initially had (VGS faulty and output speed signal is implausible compared to wheel rpm).
Gary Ferraro I would like to. I am a software engineer with a little bit of mechanics background. I spend week ends working on cars trying to get as much experience/skills as possible. I have a 722.9 and I was wondering where I could find parts in order to rebuild it. By the way, I find it very difficult here in France to find someone with big knowledge that would be willing to help me to learn, so thank you very much for all your videos !
May have to go to the internet for parts, my supplier for parts is a company called Transtar. There web address is WWW.Transtar1.com Any questions, just let me know, if you wanted to send pictures also, i can give you my e-mail as well
Question. I am about to a total swap with a new 722.9 transmission in my 2006 c230. I will be keeping same valve body and same conductor plate I won't need any software update or relearn correct?
@@GaryFerraro I have a scanner but not sure it will read transmission feature on the MB. I have a basic scanner and an advance but for another model. Where do you look at the model in a scanner? Thanks.
@@GaryFerraro thanks! Great videos. Rich in details and tricks that are really useful to know. Would you have video on how to remove the 722.9 btw? I'm looking for info specially the torique converter to replace its fluid and such.
You could have just taken the case off after taking the too nut off and everything would have still been stacked up. The reason you couldn't fit the gear on is because you need to line up the hole on the side with the hole on the gear it sits on. No more training. Don't want to give all the secrets away lol
where do you live? you look like transmission god lol, i have a 2010 e350 goes into drive and reverse moves like an anchor tow but then thats it you can hear something from the transmission. where about are you and what did it cost to do an overhaul on this transmission?
Gary Ferraro no im in Ontario Canada. What would it cost if I brought the transmission to you for you to rebuild it. Let me know at Harman.mezgin@gmail.com
Do you have any codes present for the trans,? the only problem here if the conductor plate has to be changed, the new one has to be programmed and then shift adapts may have to be reset, i have to make a phone call to see if the plate can be programmed without it being installed in the car
Gary Ferraro I can hook it up to the obd reeder and give you the codes. Is there any way I can get in touch with you through a phone call or something? While I do the scan.
The computer is inside the trans, not sure if a code reader will work but try it, is your check engine light on, if the trans is moving off heavy it may be in failsafe mode
Hi, I have 2009 SL63 AMG with 722.9 transmission, car starts and idles fine but when i put it in R or D the engine stalls, could you please provide your expert advise on this situation, thanks in advance
Ronald Ramos: I don’t know what is the problem with this, I am still struggling to figure it out, if you have any ideas please reply back, any help will be appreciated
Sounds like convertor could be locked up causing car to stall, possible your TCU went bad (famous 13 pin connector leaks and shorts TCU sometimes) this happened on my C63 ended up needing new wet clutch and valvebody which updated me to VGS3 so got all new stuff and ultimately back to new. Fair warning it’s a pricey job as parts are $$$ and not all shops can get the parts from benz so I’d talk to your dealer or good Indy shop by you. - FWIW if you’re handy you can attempt job yourself and find cheap parts on eBay and other sites, but getting it programmed may not be possible as you need special scan tools to get going as TCU ties to the VIN - that’s why I had a shop do it and used all OEM new parts of course - better safe than sorry and get it done right first time. - circuitboardmedics.com/mercedes-benz-722-9-conductor-plate-tcm-repair/
All 722.9 transmission are the same as far as gear ratios. The difference will be in the amount of clutches per clutch packs and if you have the wet clutch system, those do change in some of the hardware (B1 and k2 assemblies are completely different).
sir thanks for makeing these video for us i learn lot of thinks but i want understand section clutches like K1 K2 B2 B3 Do you have any digram i am dubai
If you are in Dubai you are lucky, get in touch with Tasos Moschatos on his channel and check out his videos. He is a great Mechanic. If he was here in N.Y. I would use him! Let me know how it goes. Thank you.
Rofl this guy doesn't know what he doing -_- if anyone needs a Mercedes or BMW/range rover transmissions rebuilt at wholesale price and you're in southern California, look up and contact Mercedes Benz transmissions in San Gabriel California. My dad owns the shops and wholesales to tons of other shops and I rebuild all of his Mercedes for him.
