We added a wood stove to supplement our furnace and it saved us years ago when the furnace died in December and couldn’t be replaced for three weeks. Not to mention the power outages with no electricity for a heat pump. Cost about $1000.00 installed in 1988, about 12% of hvac cost. You can do the numbers for your situation. Might as well use some of that wood that you cut. Probably get lots of advice from Guy.
It is not funny but in a way also funny. Ok so as the old saying goes when it rains it pours. I have not one but two large refrigerators' because I love to cook. Odd as it sounds I hate to eat and I eat one meal a day. No I don't snack. Well one Fridge broke down on me. I knew if I had to I could make it with just one but both Fridges were full and both freezers were also full. Meaning I had no place for the other food. Well as I decided to do my best and repack everything and try to make the other fridge hold all it can. I found out that too was not working. Ah but using towels to clean up the mess I had no choice but to wash them with my heavy duty washing machine. Yes put the towels in and filled it up with water. That was it the washing machine was broke as well. I about reached my point with that all happening and thought I need to just take my mind off things for a while. I decided to watch a few videos on my 65 inch flatscreen smart tv. Guess what? Yes Sir the tv was black and not working. I had it so I decided to watch a few videos on my computer. Yes that is right my computer was messed up. There is also another old saying. If it wasn't for bad luck I would have no luck at all. Back a few years ago I was hit with a death in the family. But that didn't stop there. Long story short I had 8 family members die all with in 3 months apart. I bought a John Deere Riding lawn mower. 16 horse power. A tire went flat so I pumped it up. Went flat again . then another went flat the next day I had not one but 3 flat tires. I let a girl use my car to take her kids to a Church gathering and a Church dinner. It was a beautiful car. When I got the car back the next day the motor was blown. My brother told me he say me driving the night before speeding racing and doing burn outs. I told him no it wasn't me I lent my car to a girl to take her two kids to a Church gathering. He said that was no girl driving. Lesson learned never ever lend anything out to anyone.
Despite some homeowner issues, looks like it is a BEAUTIFUL day in the forest. Thanks for sharing Gord. Hope all is OK with you & your family. Thinking about you all.
I cannot believe the difference in the amount of snow from your place to mine. I am about 45 miles south of the Mackinaw bridge. Good luck eating the elephant!
With 2 rain events in my forecast, I think the ice/snow base on my driveway is probably done for for the season. Not much of a winter here in southern New Brunswick for snow.
Thanks Gord, for all of the tractor and snow blowing content. It's helped inspire me to start my own snowblowing channel. Keep the great videos coming!!
Don’t eat it all at one time . Good advise, Off grid living has its challenges and sometimes it does sucks. Good you let others know that off grid living is hard at times. Been that way for twenty five years but wouldn’t want to live anywhere else ( here in Colorado)
Howdy,Gord... Bad things come in 3s or 4s or 5s!!! Hope this is the last of things for a bit! Without getting into a lot of personal business. Could you do a video on the annual maintenance cost of having a property with a long drive? Materials, fuel, time invested, equipment depreciation, equipment maintenance cost and etc. I know things vary from year to year but it might open some folks eyes to just what it takes versus paying a contractor to do all the up keep! Just thinking out loud again...Have a great day!
Hey good day Wayne. That would be a really helpful video. I think. I would have to dig deep into my file boxes to pull that stuff out again as it has been a long time. I will think on it. I think it would be helpful, but man, that will be a lot of work. Thanks for the idea. I'll add it to the list. Cheers Wayne.,:)
How's she goin'? It sure was a nice day for plowing, but then again any day is a nice day for plowing!! I hope the propane and HVAC guys can get in and out with no issues. Take 'er easy!!
Sorry about your bad luck with things. Sounds like you caught my bad luck. For 2 years i had constant bad luck with things breaking down about every month and a half and each time it was in the USD$ thousand to fix. I was really losing hope. But i made it through and things have been good for about 7 months now.
I'd like to see you do a video on what video equipment and editing software (if any) you use, as well as microphone. I think that would be interesting to see. I'm also curious as to why you change your discharge chute direction so many times while blowing. Is it just for visual effect? Because it doesn't appear that the wind is changing directions to blow the snow back towards you. Just curious.
Morning Jeff. That's a good idea for the video. The chute is sometimes changed for video effect but mostly because of wind - the driveway snakes through the forest - lots of turns which causes the wind to hit me in different directions. Thanks and have a good one!
If you had a mechanic give you money back because the first two times didn't fix your problem you found a one of a kind shop there! Not sure why anyone would do that.
Thanks Brad for the comment. In this case it was obvious that his first two attempts did not work but the third did. And hey, when you find an honest mechanic, I am pretty sure I will be using him in the future,. Cheers!
GPA you just get to have all the fun oh well it’ll be boring if you didn’t have troubles just spice it up a little. I still can’t believe you sold your snowmobile.
I hope the hvac and propane trucks made it out okay. Last month I had an electrician finish wiring my pole barn. We got some snow during the day and he got stuck. I also got stuck trying to get him out.
Hope you got everyone in and things all fixed Gord. Plus no problems with the driveway and vehicles in or out. Not a fun way to spend a beautiful winter up there. Loved the scenery and tracks everywhere. Stay safe and keep up the good work and video. Fred.
Hey good afternoon Fred. 10 dehgrees today ( 50 F) but both are scheduled in now for tomorrow. Fingers crossed. :)) Thanks - be well and wish your family all the best
So how do you eat an elephant ? One bite at a time,,, take things as they come, and its done before you know,, not that its not like pulling your hair out some times, ;)
Sorry you had so many problems last week Gord. Your blower does a beautiful job. We only got 3 inches of the wettest heavy snow you can imagine. Then it warmed up and 4 days later the drive is soft and any ground is mud if you drive across it. The Great Lakes are only 12-1/2% ice covered when they are normally 57% covered at this time. This is one warm winter. Well, take care Gord, hope the family is doing well, keeping all of you in prayer.
Out of all those things you listed you have to do you forgot one. Make a video of me listing all the things I have to do. Have a good one! Enjoyed it. Also noticed you're closing hard on 100K subscribers. Well deserved!
What a different year for weather, we are in Ottawa, typically we are in a deep freeze and the snow banks should be so high you can't see past them to get of your laneway, this year. Its almost all melted, I'm 55, dont remember a winter like this, I have only plowed 4 times, 2 of them was cause I wanted to play. Crazy weather.
GP, do you put any oil or anything on the exposed metal in your snowblower around the impeller where the paint has worn away after using it to prevent rust? What about at the end of the season when you put it away? Thanks.
Good Morning Gord I know about that saying "when it rains it pours" and never in a good way. I have another one when facing multiple issues and you don't know where to start. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. You always seem to have a positive outlook on anything that comes your way. Hopefullly all the repairs will be done for awhile.
Good Gord 👍 If anyone watching has seen or knows of a video that features someone either plowing or blowing snow with a non hydrostatic tractor, I'd be interested in viewing it. Thanks in advance to anyone offering a link to one.
Life kicks us every time we're down. Sometimes all you can do is laugh at the pile it throws at you (that or cry). Handling them one at a time makes it all more manageable. Glad things are getting sorted out and kudos to the Mechanic, you have a pretty good one! 👍👍👍
I feel for you when things seem to pile up going wrong, we have had a couple similar situations but seeing your positive attitude helps put things in perspective. Haven’t had much in the way of snow in a while, was 23C yesterday! Almost felt like I should be mowing. Cheers friend
Hey thanks! Life is a bit difficult at times but just try to focus on the good things and take the challenges one at a time. My Grandma always used to tell me that no matter how difficult I felt things are getting, there is always someone else that has it more difficult. Which I think is true. Head always up! LOL! Cheers BLT!
