An imminently sensible aircraft. I love watching the A380 that flies over our house every day, but there is something so much more graceful about the 747. I saw one banking hard at low altitude over the city the other day and it just looked magnificent.

The 747-8 is the most beautiful jet ever built... Airlines should be lining up for these awesome jets.. Passengers love them and they don't need updated airport facilities to handle them...to me that is a huge plus..

The reason the 747 is still the king, is because it was flying almost 40 years before the A380. So it has flown a Billion more passengers. The A380 can't come along and dethrone the 747 because it's larger (or supposedly more fuel efficient).

I've been on a 747 - once in 1976 and - once in 2001. I agree with TheMightyHartley, in my own words the 747 is a marvelous icon of the skies! The 1976 flight was to England with Wardair.The 2001 flight was from Toronto to Vancouver with Air Canada.

When they create a new aircraft, a significant amount of R&D goes into the design. They work hard to make the fuselage and wings as aerodynamic as possible within the constraints of size, materials, and time. So, why completely abandon it with an entirely new platform, like the 777? I really like the approach here of taking a very successful aircraft and making it even better. Kudos to Boeing for leveraging a proven design and improving it!

This is the generation I call "Boeing MAX". This is the era in history where we make the first steps from today to tomorrow. All the airliners are getting a makeover with the 787 type powerhouse, more fuel efficiency, more passenger appeal, tech upgrades, retrofits, etc. It started with the 747-8i, then the 777-2 and 777-9. Next it's the 737 MAX. Then I think it will be the 767s, then the last one left, the 757. I didn't say the 727 or the 717, or even the 707, I don't think they will be refit as they are really old. But some of the newer ones will be refit, after the old turning new we should get The 797 or it will be thrown in there between the rest.

its very impressive espacially the new curve designs of their wings. but the big question is will it be up against the likes of the A380. I still feel Boeing has something special to offer, something very unique but they need to be more innovative in terms of their designs, its a good step forward.
@mikaelcan441

I like how they always say "best in its class". There really isn't any other airplane in its class. The a380 is a ton larger (and sometimes difficult to fill), and the a350-1000 is even tinier compared to the smaller 77W. I guess the other 747 models are in the same class, but obviously the 748 would be better than the 744 in fuel efficiency and capacity. It's still a graceful airplane with great operating economics, and has a sweet spot for passenger and cargo capacity. I can't believe very few airlines are buying the PAX version, as the 777X still can't really replace it.

The TWA 800 incident was not caused by heat from the airconditioning unit. What happened that day was: TWA 800 spent 30+ minutes on ground with engines running. Without cool air cooling the airconditiong unit, it start to heat up the central fuel tank created a explosive air-fuel mixture (Jetfuel won't burn if you just drop a flamming match in it.) When TWA 800 climbs a faulty wire ignite the air-fuel mixture.Nowadays cylinders with fibers in there will creat and fill the tanks with Nitrogen.

Arik have purchased some already :) Remember, many airlines are to fly the 747-400 for decades yet! Such as Delta airlines, they'll likely buy some in future. I'm speaking with CEO of Virgin soon to try and talk sense into him that he needs to buy 748s as well as A380s, because A380s are too big for some routes they fly (Gatwick to Grantley Adams intl) and Dreamliners carry few passengers compared to the 748 (250 vs 467)

Well, funny you should say that. The 747 is capable of being pushed far beyond its known limits. Sure, it'd cause a lot of flutter and some damage at over mach 1, but a 747 is capable of reaching mach 1 during a dive, for example. Mach one for a short amount of time in a 747 would do little to the integrity of the airplane. It's a strong airplane. E.G has 3 wing spars. China Airlines flight 006 held together at over mach 1. I'm not taking this from a guy who thinks 350kts is overspeed in a320s.

TWA flight 800 exploded because it's fuel tanks were filled with oxygen, if you payed attention you would see that this was solved. Most accidents happened with boeing aircraft because Airbus started building planes in the early 70's and Boeing has been manufacturing airplanes since the early 20's

There's no need to replace the 747 yet. Old design or not, the 911 is a brilliant feat of engineering taking rear-engined design and making it work so well. Boeing is the Porsche of the aircraft manufacturers because they build designs that work. Unlike Airbus, look at the A340...what like 15 years cause the 777 sold so well in comparison.

"All aircraft can be taken to higher speeds than recommended" Well, unless the beluga whale A380 is in question, that thing started breaking apart during flutter testing BEFORE it reached its recommended speed. I know they had to make modifications and it barely ended up certified in that aspect, which is why it's allowed to fly, but to think of taking an A380 past its suggested maximum speed is ludicrous and would end incatastrophe. Unlike a 747 which would hold fine. We all know this.

Boeing made plans to make a 747-500 and a 747-600. However, the -500 design became the 747-400ER and the -600 design was scrapped. This airplane is named "747-8" because it has been upgraded with technology from the 787.

Lufthansa, one of the few airlines which fly both A380 and 747-8i -- say that A380 has 747-8i beat in fuel consumption per seat. Not to forget how spacious it is in an A380 and a lot quieter inside. Just replacing the wing and engines won't get you much.
@StratMatt777
@StratMatt777 10 лет назад
"Just replacing the wing and engines won't get you much." Okay, in that case the A330 is no better than the A300 and the A340-500 is no better than the A340-300 and the 737-700 is no better than the 737-300. Reduced drag and reduced fuel consumption won't get you much? Re-winging an airplane makes it a new airplane. Re-engining with 787 engines creates a massive fuel consumption reduction. The only "economic" flaw the 747 fuselage has is that - in the aft part of the fuselage- there is a bunch of excess fuselage structure (weight) above the passengers caused by the 747 being designed to haul cargo containers. Looking at the A380 aft fuselage and massive tail and horizontal stabilizer I see a lot of dead weight there too (unlike the back end of the 747). Due to the high mass of the airframe and the short (in comparison) moment arm to the tail, the A380 is probably carrying a lot more "dead weight" than the 747 is in the upper lobe of the fuselage. Look at it! The A380 is a pig. Look at that tail! I wonder what it weighs? The superior aircraft is whichever one is most cost-effective for the route that a particular airline needs it to address. Whichever one has the lowest seat-mile costs, highest dispatch reliability and the lowest maintenance costs is going to be the best airplane. The QANTAS representative who bought the A380 did it only because he said that Airbus was essentially "giving them away" and he couldn't turn that cost savings down because he's "have to answer to his board" (investors)- and would probably be fired. QANTAS has always been Boeing loyal, but businesses exist to make a profit- and Airbus likes to give airplanes away.
@jeromedelacour5692
@jeromedelacour5692 10 лет назад
StratMatt777 All right, you wanna get technical? 1. The A380 air-frame is made of composites. Especially the tail structure you think is "dead weight". Thus, in fact the tail structure of the A380 is larger, and LIGHTER compared to 747-8i. You can even see it in this video that that the tail section is painted green with a non-corrosive paint; meaning it's made of aluminium. So you can keep wondering how much it weighs. 2. If A380 looks like a pig, 747 looks like humped buffoon. 747 design is flawed -- cockpit is placed on the upper deck and the lower deck protrudes under it! How is the polite supposed to see the runway?? There aren't even cameras at the nose-gear like A380 has! 3. As I've already pointed out the only carrier, Lufthansa say A380 is cost effecient compared to the 747-8i (supposedly the model expressly to built to compete against A380's superior technology) 4."Airbus likes to give airplanes away." Yeah right, they are very generous.
@StratMatt777
@StratMatt777 10 лет назад
Jérôme Delacour said "2. If A380 looks like a pig, 747 looks like humped buffoon. 747 design is flawed -- cockpit is placed on the upper deck and the lower deck protrudes under it! How is the polite supposed to see the runway??" Actually, an Airbus spokesman concedes that the A380 is not very pretty. He says that they had a certain dimension to work with and this is the result. Obviously any attempt to streamline the look of the A380 to make the front end more sleek would have been at the cost of seats and efficiency. So that wouldn't make any sense. Airliners exist to make airlines money. it doesn't really matter that there are enthusiasts like us who get all caught up in "which one looks better" and then get all pissy about which manufacturer is better (all based entirely on the nationalism that is the result of the country we just happened to be born in). I don't care that the A380 is ugly. In fact, I think that the Wings and engines look fantastic. The fuselage looks okay to me in Korean Air and British Airways colors... but looks really don't matter. 747 pilots have never had any trouble seeing the runway, though I'm sure it took some getting used to at first! Apparently you aren't aware that when Juan Trippe and Boeing came up with the concept of the 747 they were certain that supersonic flight was the future and that every single 747 they were going to produce in the early 1970s was going to be turned into a freighter- and that all airlines would fly supersonic airliners. The cockpit is on the upper deck so that the nose can open to load cargo containers. That is the only reason it has an upper deck. I respect your opinion on the looks of these two airplanes, but I don't really believe that you can find anyone who thinks that the A380 nose or fuselage looks better than the 747... if you can find them they are Airbus fans who are lying because they think that admitting that the 747 looks better in some way is an attack on the A380 (it isn't an attack on the A380). It's just a fact. Boeing knows that the 777X is going to DESTROY the 747-8i in terms of seat-mile costs, but it will remain a fantastic freighter (which is probably the real reason they designed the 747-8). It's not a problem that the fuselage is made of aluminum. If aluminum fuselages were terribly inefficient the 777X wouldn't have one. "Airbus likes to give airplanes away." Yeah right, they are very generous." What I said about Airbus and QANTAS was a fact. You don't have to like it. It's not that big of a deal. They are just airplane manufacturers... the fact of the A380 being ugly does NOT mean that U.S. is #1 and Europe is #2! It just means that it is ugly. Have a good day~
@jeromedelacour5692
@jeromedelacour5692 10 лет назад
StratMatt777 Mais quoi ça cette connerie???! So, long last you agree that whether the A380 looks elegant or not is YOUR opinion? Lolzz! In fact most would opine that the Korean Air and South China liveries are quite ugly. A380 looks the best in Air France, Lufthansa, Qantas, Emirates liveries. Anyway, thanks for not challenging the key factual points, i.e., (1) and (3), which means they are true and you have no answer to them. I don't give a rat's fart about opinions. **All who have travelled in an A380 agree that it is much quieter, spacious and luxurious. Even economy class seats. **Pilots are delighted the way it responds, the fly-by-wire, glass cockpit, advanced avionics. Slow landing speed, for a graceful landing and needs shorter runway. **Airlines are happy with fuel savings and satisfied customers. **Airports are happy to see one aeroplane take-off/land instead of 2 to 3. Complies with ICAO standard 80 metre box. These are the facts which make A380 much better than 747, even 747-8i. So by not refuting the facts your opinionated long comment is meaningless. I couldn’t care less who designed the 747, even I could say -- Did you know Jean Roeder and Charles Champion, at Airbus, were the creators of the A380? What difference does it make if you don’t know who they are? You agree with the obvious misplacement of the cockpit on 747; stating that pilots would need getting used to. And funny enough the even on freighter aeroplanes the cockpit could still have come at the tip -- just like all other freighters. And about the companies; when Airbus introduced fly-by-wire, glass cockpit, composites, Boeing dismissed it as cheap innovations. Now they are humming the same tune, so much so that they are promising a host of improvements of an aeroplane (777X) which is not even built yet. Heck! They haven’t even built factories to manufacture the composite wings. And please provide proof for your remark about the Airbus Spokesperson and Qantas.

In my opinion 747 is better than a380 because it's safe and more fancy

But the 747 is definitely the better looking of the two.

You're right! Why? Because they are not in the same category! You missed the memo that states they don't carry nearly the same passengers. They don't compete. They compliment each other. Ask Lufthansa and Korean. They have both and have no interest on dumping either one.

Of course M1+ is well above normal limits but a DC8 was deliberately dived to M1.012, maintained for 16s (and later sold to Qantas). The Taiwanese 747 that is calculated to have reached M1 during it's uncommanded roll, steep inverted 30000ft dive a high-g pull-out (a half loop), suffered significant damage - although a lot of this is consistent with it's high g pull-out (wings permanently bent 2" up, parts of tail missing, inboard main gear dangling, etc). It was repaired & re-entered service.
