For nervous flyers and non-aviation peeps: Landing with a shredded tyre is not usually a problem for the plane involved, but it can cause delays at a busy airport because the runway may have to be closed while it's checked for chunks of tyre debris.

Here at ORD, I've seen plenty of flat tires on arrivals. I've seen the tire changes happen ON the runways or taxiways. The fire department will bring out their own airstair truck, and the city will send out their own buses. The passengers will be deplaned on the runway or taxiway, and the tire change is done right there.

@gordonbryan8381 maybe not a blown tire, but many modern airliners are equipped with tire pressure sensors. The aircraft that are equipped will also get some sort of advisory message if the pressure drops below a certain threshold. Sometimes there is a message if there is a large enough difference between tires on the same axle.
@chrisschack9716
@chrisschack9716 3 месяца назад
I don't know about V1, but they were well into the high-speed regime. A blown tire isn't exactly good, but it's not the sort of thing that would firmly tell you "not today" ... and a landing is likely to be easier on the ones left than an RTO.

Taking off with, and landing with, one failed tyre is perfectly acceptable. Boeing actually endorses it and recommends continuing to your destination in order to reduce weight and plan for your landing. Absolutely no reason, beyond a total absence of engineering at your destination, not to continue, especially above 80kts.

The avro could just have kept the rudder in rather than letting it off. Just sticking in a fixed amount of rudder and leaving it is better than fiddling. Also the a320 is being a bit overcontrolled. Many airline pilots could benefit from more practice with small aircraft.

My understanding is that you’re commanding roll rate not control surface deflection. The computer takes care of that. So you can achieve the same response with much smaller inputs. So the amount of deflection shown is unnecessary. That’s my understanding at least.
@rtbrtb_dutchy4183
@rtbrtb_dutchy4183 3 месяца назад
@@MeppyMan yes, you are 100% correct. You really don’t have to make a lot of inputs. As a matter of fact, once you start “stirring” like that or if the airplane moves around a lot, they tell you to take your hands off the stick completely. This will stabilize the airplane. But even with a none fly by wire aircraft, you really don’t have to make such extreme movements. Just like flying your helicopter, tiny corrections works best.

Q: if that Atlas 744 would not have landed ‚forced‘ - would it have stayed in the air for eternity? Seriously. Your click bait titles are getting out of hand. And that 767 crew unbelievably ‚decided‘ to continue, even though a tyre burst on the main boogey? How dare they? Maybe because it was AFTER V1 and effing simultaneously with ROTATE? AV Herald: A Delta Airlines Boeing 767-300, registration N195DN performing flight DL-257 from Detroit,MI (USA) to Sao Paulo Guarulhos,SP (Brazil), blew the aft inboard right hand main gear tyre on takeoff from Detroit's runway 21L while rotating for takeoff, the crew retracted the gear normally, continued to Sao Paulo, declared emergency on approach due to a possibly blown tyre and landed safely. The return flight DL-256 was cancelled. Delta Airlines said the crew was aware of tyre debris being found on the runway following their departure, Delta technicians however were unable to positively identify from photos whether the debris belonged to a Delta aircraft or not. The crew therefore declared emergency on approach to Sao Paulo as a precaution. Now, CRM: F O R D E C For R: they had to land regardless, with a blown tyre! All was considered, including Delta maintenance. And the decision was made to continue to GRU.

Fun fact, in the 1970s, a Concorde tire exploded damaging the wing of the aircraft and causing a fuel leak that could have crashed the aircraft if it wasn't for an observant passenger. The FAA recommended airlines and manufacturers put "runflat" tires on all their aircraft. To this day only a few companies do so.

Not sure how wise it is to continue with a blown tire. Nigeria Airways Flight 2120, a DC-8 blown tire caught fire and landing gear was retracted catching the plane on fire. Wouldn't a low altitude go-around with the landing gear down, land, repair tire and inspect the plane be a safer option?
