747-SP Startup - Checks - Departure from Orly

A remarkable amateur film of time in the cockpit of a 747 'classic' aircraft during "Start up, checks and take-off" from Orly, Paris. Note the third position of Flight Engineer - something we will never see in these days of 'two man' cockpit control on modern aircraft.
This is a 747-SP (short body-special performance) - only a handful are still flying and airworthy in 2015. Qantas Australia was fortunate to have two in it's 747 fleet until retired to the Arizona desert in the early 1990's.
I found this clip on the internet years ago and saved it. Now that these planes are history, it is only fair that I upload it for others to enjoy. I beg the indulgence of the original up loader (who ever you were), but thank you for this insight into something we probably will never see again.

What an outstanding video. Great plane as well, Believe the design was aimed at added distance with a lighter payload. Ran into competition with the 1011 and DC-10 tri-bodies. Lots of gadgets and gauges on the old flight decks. Add the old engineer's panels as well. Thanks for sharing...one of the best cockpit videos on this site I've seen.

Just gotta love the drone of those engines! Quite noticeable in the early cockpits but really muted today with the advent of more modern and efficient insulation.

Years ago I went with my grandparents back to Virginia the desert with my cousins and my aunt and uncle we flew into Salt Lake and had to change planes when we got on there was another little boy that said Mommy I can't see out my window his mom said that's because there's a really big airplane next to us so my grandparents and I got seated of course I grab the window seat in one of these 747s we're literally right next to us and we were in a 707 I've always wanted to fly in one of these but I've never been lucky enough wow what a plane

Sound engine take off ...great on my hears...🎵🎶👍👌 It reminds me of the F.-GTOM of corsair (747-SP44) withdrawn from the airline in September 2002

I flew on a QF SP from YMML to WADD in June or July 1998, so retirement to Arizona was later than early '90s.

This aircraft is certainly Saudi Royal flight. I believe the plane is still in service and fully maintained. One of the last 747-SP aircraft still airworthy!

The Qantas SP’s were not retired in the early 90’s because I flew on one out of Seoul in late 1996. And I think it was sold on , not retired to the desert .
@Parker6432
@Parker6432 6 лет назад
Both QF 747-SP's were retired to the Arizona desert and broken up for parts- the parts being worth more than a sale of an airframe. Word has it that Qantas resale price was so outrageous nobody was interested. MORE rumour says that John Travolta was interested in one of the SP's but QF was totally ridiculous with their sale price. Thus two magnificently maintained air frames were "scrapped" with many miles still available to them.

Thar's not Orly it's De Gaulle! You can clearly see the ground chart of LFPG/CDG with the co-pilot and when they depart you can see the runway 27R from the window, which doesn't exist in LFPO. Nice video though, thanks for posting!

Question to 747 pilots, is it usual to handle the yoke with both hands versus right hand on the throttle below cruising altitude?
@SyafiqFly
@SyafiqFly 6 лет назад
Brian Cheung nope. Usually we fly with one hand on thttle and the other on contrl column. Never use both hand on control colomn unless really2 necessary. Like all hydraulic failure or commencing a steep turn

+Fares It is one of my favourites. It was posted by a Saudi pilot about six years ago and I recorded it. He removed it but I was able to reproduce it for those who enjoy it! I have another in my library on the same crew doing a descent into an American airport in the same 747-SP

SC Plays. Qantas SP's had RR RB211-524D4's engines, this has RB-211-524C2's. I was lucky enough to work on both Qantas SP's VH-EAA and EAB as back in the 90's

@Parker6432

+Richard - I never had the chance to fly a 747SP. Qantas had two of them, and when they were retired, John Travolta wanted one of them. Qantas decided they were more valuable for scrap prices, so they ended their lives in the Arizona desert... chopped up! :( SAA retired one of their SP's (Maluti) to Rand Airport museum. There are clips on YT of the final flight into Rand airport
