Question 7 :Antibiotics first then cultures ?really thought it was the other way around

Hello, the part that made this question emergent is that the patient has Cystic Fibrosis. Based on the severity of the symptoms and the patient's history, clinicians may decide that the benefits of starting antibiotics immediately outweigh the risks of waiting for culture results. The decision to prioritize antibiotic administration reflects a common clinical approach to managing severe infections. It emphasizes the urgency of addressing the infection to prevent complications and stabilize the patient. In summary, while obtaining a sputum culture before starting antibiotics is the ideal approach, the immediate administration of antibiotics may be necessary in severe cases to quickly manage the infection and prevent further deterioration. This reflects a balance between the need for accurate diagnosis and the urgency of treating a potentially life-threatening infection. The sources support the clinical reasoning that while obtaining sputum cultures is critical for targeted therapy, the immediate administration of antibiotics in the face of severe symptoms is often necessary to prevent further complications and stabilize the patient. This being said, if the patient is stable and had a fever with green sputum, that being said, Yes, you would want to get sputum cultures first. This patient has shortness of breath with a dx of Cystic Fibrosis and is not stable. I hope this helps. Excellant Question that you posed.

Antibiotics can be given before C&S test result if the physician knows the bacterium that mostly causes CF. Is that empirical therapy?
