under 10% cares enough to even click the like button. Consistently getting a masterpiece every sunday is worth both a like and a comment in my world. Appreciate you Martjin.
Recently I've noticed you a little tired. The cake and burnt bread are just a symptom of this. Perhaps a little physical rest will help put things back in their proper place. This project of yours is physically and mentally very exhausting. A rest will help keep you safer. Have a break. We will still be here waiting, don't worry. Have a Nice week Martjin! ✌️
i thought exactly the same, when he ran down to the view point and then seemed to nearly trip. The way he stands so close to the edge always makes me nervous but this time my heart nearly stopped. Please take care Martijn, u are not a bird 😉
I’ve been watching RU-vid since it’s inception way back in the day. This has easily been a top 5 ongoing “series” for me. I stumbled upon the first video I believe 3 days after it was originally uploaded, I’m not sure why I even clicked it. But I did, and here we are. What a journey it’s been brother, thank you for sharing.
I'm the same! I have no idea how it showed up on my feed as I almost exclusively use RU-vid to listen to Skyrim music 😂 yet something made me click it and I've been hooked ever since! I'm also curious what your other series on YT are, I've tried to find something that comes close to Martijn whilst I'm eagerly awaiting his next video 😊
You may have burned the cake and the bread, but the arch looks beautiful, and the finished walls are another achievement after consistent effort. Well done for plugging away when things get hard. The new valley scene at the end was beautiful. See you next week
Once again, Martijn, you have calmed my soul with gentle slow persistence, and beautiful cinematography.... Sunday mornings are spent enjoying time watching your efforts. Thank you. You have become my favorite channel...
😂😂Agree that the cowbells in Martijn's videos sound lovely....BUT...when I enjoyed a wonderful summer holiday in Interlaken the incessant cowbells were a tad trying ...as the old saying goes..."everything in moderation" 😂
Yes, the stone work is looking beautiful Martijn! You’ll have many years of enjoying the light on those walls and roof stones and timber ceilings. The time and care you have taken honours the materials and will bring you pleasure always. Well done.
I am glad you sprayed the walls for the fleas. You have to do it again in 7 days as the flea eggs hatch in that time. As a pet owner who had inside and outside cats over the years I have done battle with flea infestation and it's such a pain. If you put food grade diatomaceous earth on the floors and in the chicken coop it will prevent fleas and mites from the chickens. Put some under their nests also. It will kill the bugs naturally. I love your videos and look forward to watching them every Sunday morning. So much hard work and you have made so much progress. The walls you have built look outstanding. Thank you for sharing your journey with us.
The chickens were happy you burned the cake. And know you were excited about the first egg! Gardens are all about trial and error. What beautiful walks!😊❤
Wow! the reason you chose a peaceful mountain was to renovate with patience, time and tranquility. Rome certainly wasn't built in a day, your patience amazes me Martijn well done!! 🙂
I often wonder how much of Martijn’s time is spent on his video presentations. I appreciate both the visual and editing aspects of his presentations ~ so professional, thoughtful, and well organized.
I believe he has said that the video work has become a natural part of his work during the week, and then he usually takes a day (Saturday) to edit and upload.
I just hope that when you finish your mountain housing project, you do not stop making videos of those natural landscapes and with that music of exquisite taste. Best regards.
As always I'm impressed with the fruits of your labor that continue to manifest themselves in such beautiful ways. I was reminded today on your walk of a quote by Michelangelo "My soul can find no staircase to Heaven unless it be through Earth's loveliness. ” Every Sunday you inspire me to see my world, not just visit it. Have a wonderful week Martijn.
@Lazzeroni-NorCal, what lovely words spoken to and about Martijn. One can tell you connect with him as I feel I do, too. Martijn is unique in many ways and much is gained by watching him and “getting” his outlook on life. I loved the quote from Michelangelo, beautiful! Thank you for sharing. 💚 from Texas
About the mystery of the egg color: It is not the color of the plumage that determines the shell color, but depends on the breed and is recognizable by the color of the bare earlobe behind the corn. Hens with white earlobes lay white eggs, hens with brown earlobes lay brown eggs. 🙂
Also, chicken breeds that lay white eggs are apparently more sustainable. They need less food, live longer and produce more eggs on a yearly basis :) According to the Dutch consumer tv show "Keuringsdienst van waarde".
As my mother used to say, “Some days roast beef, some days gravy.” I look forward to your videos every Sunday. Thank you for the documentation of your peaceful struggles.
It’s such an honour to be a part of this process and I couldn’t be more excited to watch each week! Sometimes I even watch twice just to help the channel. It’s relaxing and so wonderful to see things moving forward nice and slowly and with such love and care!
Awesome drone and landscaping footage on all your videos...really enjoy them. I finally caught up to the last one. Those cabins are going to be worth a fortune when you're done. I can envision old style outdoor lanterns hanging from the cabin stone walls soon. It's going to look amazing. Thank you for the time you put into editing the videos. The view from up there is priceless. It has become a relaxation therapy for me to watch them. Looking forward to more.
Such an honest portrayal between your struggles and successes in the midst of your sharing all the beauty surrounding you. You are a superb artist in so many ways!
Chickens like a perch in front of the nesting box. Its best to have one that folds up during the day then it is put down in the evening to encourage them to lay in the box in the evening. They also like the color red. It attracts them the same way the cocks comb does. In commercial egg operations you will often see a red curtain in front.of the nesting box. They like the color and privacy it provides.
The the arch and walls are definitely a work of art! We never miss an episode. Please protect your eyes when chipping away at those stones. A friend lost an eye that way. So preventable.
A polytunnel is very cost-efficient. But ugly as hell. My guess is Martijn would opt for a geodesic dome greenhouse. I can' t imagine he would go for an ordinary polytunnel.
King Alfred burnt the cakes too Martijn - not to worry. Your cottage looks like it is going to be very cozy this Winter - it is an amazing achievement. Your process is so mindful of your surroundings and the history and natural geography of your chosen location - it is beautiful to watch.
A big hello from Australia 🇦🇺.The thing I have enjoyed since the beginning is how meticulous you are. Keep up the excellent work as it is and will pay huge dividends for your future. It is an absolute joy watching your work.
Martijn, I really enjoy the chickens. My grandmother kept me a lot when I was very young, and she always had chickens. I used to wake up early, and I could hear them talking under my window. Your videos showing the chickens make me remember that and smile.
Congratulations on placing the last stone in the wall. We're glad you're taking some relaxing time for yourself and enjoying whatever calls you. Happy Sunday to you and everyone! 😊
While thunder and lightning hits here in the Achterhoek of the Netherlands, the distant cowbells and scenic mountains calm me as always. This was another great episode. Thank you Martijn. Well appreciated. thank you for showing and till next week.
Bravo for the last stone!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 It’s been a journey!🫶🏻 Your dedication to the integrity of this project is outstanding!😎 Your chickens are producing eggs! Nice to have for breakfast!🐓🍳 Thanks for sharing Journey!❤🥰🫶🏻
we get the early blight and late blight here on our Tomatoes/potatoes. gather all the dead stuff and bag it, to keep it from living over in the soil. You can harvest the green tomatoes, put in box in a dark place and they will ripen slowly.
Love my Sunday evenings, watching such gorgeous craftsmanship, patience and the very few cooking fails 😝 The scenery’s stunning, and hope your flea market has moved on ❤
Martijn, you are an inspiration. Your hard work is most certainly paying off, particularly with the stone work, it looks like it has been there as long as the house. Great to see your lawn is growing so well. I look forward to all your videos, seeing your outstanding hard work and the beautiful scenery. Thank you for sharing your journey.
Dank je wel, Martijn, prachtig wederom. Also, your honesty in showing the 'failures' (baking) really add to the quality and value of your content. Truly appreciated.
It must leave you with a tremendous sense of achievement Martijn, when you look at what you have done of late … the digging out of the ground to take the sewerage pipes etc was such a physical task, given that you had to deal with huge slabs of stone in the trench and then there seemed to be continuous rain which really made the whole project that much more challenging. In all the time that you have baked bread this time is the only time it didn’t work … so I wouldn’t worry about that 😉 The painstakingly slow pace on finalizing the stone walls in the cabin just speaks of your commitment to your standard of workmanship… well done 👍 Durban SA🇿🇦
Lime mortar on the wall would make the cabin brighter. You apply it by throwing it at the wall. Then you can smooth it out with a coarse brush. The lime mortar also fills up any voids. It is also faster than trying to fill every cavity by hand.
I love these Sunday videos. When you were on the big rock overlook, i couldn't see a single cell tower or wind turbine. Gorgeous. I love the studied pace of your improvements. Best to you❤.
Hi Martijn. I look forward to every Sunday morning, (here in Florida,USA) to see your wonderful journey full of construction, everyday life and beautiful Italian landscaping. I get so excited every Saturday night knowing that in the morning I will be able to watch your journey. Your videos bring me peace. You are so easy going and that gives me a sense of calmness. And for that I also want to say Thank You!! Continue the great job you do in everything and i wish you many, many blessings. Until next Sunday. 😔 😊❤🙏
Impeccable work as usual, Martijn. Even chickens have their off days. I love how they are comfortably attached to you and the gentle clucking brings back good childhood memories.
I really admire the way that you are building; not only in your level of skill - which is very impressive, but also in your approach of not wanting to impose yourself on the house and landscape, but respect what is there, and preserve what you love about it. Without sacrificing your own human needs for warmth, safety and comfort. So often in design programmes you see people falling in love with an old building, but you just see the old soul of the building dissapearing behind the modern renovations. So I really admire your way. You really embody the ideal of 'craftsmanship'
Doing super well Martijn!!! Better use a dry method (compressed air) to remove the loose morter. You built this wonderful roof to keep the water out .....
It's always a pleasure to watch you do all of these beautiful things. The ceiling in the cabin is gorgeous with the beams and the window, of course the walls too. Your look of satisfaction was great! It must be so gratifying to accomplish what you have done, not just here but in your travels as well. Then the look of frustration with the bread; oh well these things happen. The time goes fast while watching these videos. See you next week. Take care
Learn to observe the birds:) ❤️ this sign as I observe avian species quite alot as you do with your feathered friends. Sorry about the cake and bread...we've all done it but im sure the chickens enjoyed it.. Congrats on completion of the walls....home very soon. Bless bless Martjin.
I imagine living at the top of the mountain away from the energies of a larger city bring a quietness and sharper awareness of the birds and wind and the chickens and the sound of utter quietness… being able to be alone without being lonely is rare.. I enjoy the gentleness of you in your videos . Thank you for sharing
Thank you for your time and labors to record your work. I got my piers dug for my cottage. Using honeycomb limestone rip-rap and Jacobsville brownstone for the veneer. Like the Temples of Malta. Doing a post and beam square saddle notched timber frame. Post and lintel old world style kitchen with masonry stove/oven/heater. I hope to build a broch in a flat stone style close to yours one day. Maybe find a high altitude heirloom tomato like Sasha's Altai or Aurora. Both are a 60 day tomato.
As always, the time I spend with you is restful. I can sympathize with you on the tomatoes. My garden was pretty much a failure this year. There is always next year. I am not familiar with raising chickens. Will the chicken coop be alright for them during the winter? It is so open. Can’t wait for next week’s installment. Have a good week Martijn.
I live in Ireland and my hen's preferred to roost in one particular apple tree, all year round. They each had their own branch, with Russell the rooster on top 😊
What a testament your carefully placed stonework Martijn. I know you were so looking forward to those tomatoes. I know you'll make a splendid greenhouse. Those hens need a rooster. Looking at your terrace where you have the sprinkler, I thought of a small patch of grapes 🍇 and maybe some olive trees 🌳 Bread is your thing.....I know you'll make another soon and it'll be delicious. Such beautiful scenes and I know the inside will be cozy and full this winter of friends and family visiting.
I would like to say how much I appreciate the videos you make. I've recently watched a Netherlands couple in Portugal doing something similar off grid, but there is a quality to your videos which is exceptional. You have such a good eye for photography and there is soul in your videos and a wonderful feel for the landscape and life. And the Alps are a special place.
Martijn i have no idea where or how you get your motivation to continue placing stones etc. I have an 1890 house with a rock basement and those kind of basement needs love once in a while. Watching you and other videos how to apply motar has helped me a lot. It's the motivation to get down there and do it that I find the most difficult. Thumbs up to you for your patience, your will power can make us see the finish line. Congratulations! Ÿour cabin looks really good. Sorry for your baking this week, hope it will be better for you next week, have a good one and thank you for the walk it's always so beautiful.
I bet you're glad you can move on from building up the stone. It looks beautiful. I hope the pesticide helped the flea problem. Beautiful scenery/views as usual. Thank you for sharing.
anyone remember starting to watch this series, i found it at 14 i think and binged all the previous parts, I constantly did skip soke parts or didn't watch them all fully but what a relaxing journey to watch
It might not have been a "great"gardening year but it has been a great "learning"year in the garden and that's what gardens are! You've "grown" a beautiful house, chickens and your editing just gets better and better!
Amazing progress! So nice to see a patient one with the stones, including carefully moving the heavy ones on your own. You are blessed with an athleticism, work ethic, and artistry very seldom seen. In a metaphorical sense, all this work has taken you to a “point” of breakthrough, marking a “cornerstone” amongst the many “milestones”. Admiration and respect for all your achievements.
I also want to say that you are a role model for me in how you handle mistakes, failures and disappointments. You just learn what you did wrong and try again. It has really been a help to me in my daily life to watch the way you do that. I hope next week is easier on you!
For the tomatoes try sticking some electrical copper wire through the base of the stems(sand it if it's lackquered). Supposedly it provides the tomatoes with copper necessary to fight off these sicknesses. No need to spray with anything, ever. My tomatoes have definitely benefitted from this method- quite healthy in this neverending rain all summer long in near Austria, at 900m.
I so feel for you with the charcoaled bread. I have had the same happen to me with a dutch oven using coals from a wood fire. A perfect dough went in, charcoal out. The pain of being deprived of awaited fresh bread can be pretty intense.
Another wonderful sharing of your existence there that is loved by those of us around the world! The cabin just looks fantastic. What a gift you give us all each week! Thank you for sharing your story with us!
Each week so many people from far flung places with such diverse experiences come together to enjoy Martijn's beautiful corner of the world - I wonder if there are other channels that have a similar positive impact on a global community.
ALL the talk about fleas, buy a Citronella candle, the bucket size. Put it inside the room ,& burn it. Not only fleas will leave. Your videos inspire me to try to come to Italy, just to enjoy, a scenic drives and enjoy that area.
Weer prachtige muziek! Fijn!😊
Those long stacks of wood in the village tell you what is coming. In Umbria we see them in September. Short seasons require good planning. Lovely video as always. I hope the increase in ads will get you the snow removal equipment you need to avoid last years disaster. Chickens need only food and water, but you will need to access them. Generator sponsors. Stock your fuel. Get your wood delivered and moved closer. Now is when you should be planning for the winter. Always two seasons ahead. Prepare the back up plan for your back up plan. We are all pulling for you. You can live with pests but not without heat.
What joys! (as ever,) and a birdwatchers paradise too. What a bummer re-toms, its always a big thing for toms and pots to survive and thrive without succumbing to the wretched blight. Next time look out for blight resistant varieties, they do exist. Great job on the stone work, you are a natural stone mason with the hammer flick. Big thank you for this vid , happy days...
Watching you place these stones in a tetras like manner is absolutely incredible. You are not doing just what is required by the Italian Government, you are going above and beyond. It has been such a pleasure watching this transformation thus far. I cannot wait to see more.
That happened to our tomatoes too as a beginner hobby farmer they don't like the wet dutch sommers so much.. The year after we bought a little greenhouse and we ended up with so much tomatoes that i had to can them for 4 days straight. Bell peppers (paprika) and cucumbers are also permanent residents in there. You'll learn what the best is for your vegetable garden eventually.
Like. Good morning from Brazil. The tomato must be irrigated only on the stem. Only on earth. I saw you irrigating with the hose along with the other vegetables. Crop rotation should also be done.
Just adding my voice to the many here who watch every week. First off I am always encouraged and uplifted by Martin's work ethic and sticktoitiveness (if such a word even exists). This week was a bit of a downer with two burned meals (butter cake and sour dough bread) along with the mold on the tomatoes. Yikes! Yet our friend keeps a stiff upper lip and marches onward and upward. The first brown egg was a hit. Too bad it ended up on the burnt butter cake. At least the chickens enjoyed it. There was some excellent drone work this week with both some driving footage and walking too. I did spend some time on Google maps this week trying to find Martijn's place near Val Pellice but couldn't locate it. I did find a couple of locations that might be older views of his place, and I even found one location with what looked like a round tent like his but the rest of the lay of the land wasn't right. Still looking. Things are also shaping up nicely for the transition to living in the cabin this winter. The jury is still out on whether Martijn can get everything necessary done in time. The next two months (8 weeks) will allow us all to better gauge the odds of his success. I'm still at 80%. There are always surprises with projects like this. As Martijn himself has told us he can only plan in general terms because some steps in the process only emerge as he arrives at that place in the process. So far he has done a masterful job of seeing the future and planning accordingly. Time will tell if he is able to keep things moving along at a pace that will allow the heating and cooking stove/oven and chimney to get done in time. I wonder how the pesticide worked at eliminating the fleas? Again...time will tell. God bless you Martijn. See you next week.
