I understand the struggle going into making this video more heartfelt and...sung with more feeling. They aren't together. They must record it in time or else it wouldn't sound good at all. If they were together I bet their performance would blow us out of the water. At this time, without being able to be together as a group and having to record by oneself and try onesbest to sing precisely is difficult to do with a lot of emotion.

I disagree. Each singer shows their own feelings towards this piece while they're singing. Some are happy, others are really just felling it, and the bass guy in the bottom right is near tears bye the end of the piece. This way we get to see the different reactions to this song...

My high school choir did this and it turned out great! The only problem was we had a 25 person chamber choir with 2 basses and some over-eager tenors. Any other basses or altos I'm sure can relate to me here. Lucky me and the other bass are pretty good. Still we had to stand close to the mic.
@djeggy6916
@djeggy6916 5 лет назад
James Bond i feel you homie. only 3 of my high school choir basses could project and actually hit bass notes so we were fuuuuucked. only one tenor sang out loud, and it was our female tenor too...so yeah that was cool. (by the end of the year we got our shit together and sounded incredible tho so that was a nice way to wrap up hs :])

Yes, that's definitely relatable. My high school got this in very top shape, even with me as the only bass and another baritone, the dynamics were soooo good (I noticed on this studio version that they didn't do the dynamics very well) but we had to cancel the day of the concert because covid restrictions. I am still very mad about that because this was my favorite song that I've ever done in choir.

Very precise, all good voices; my only constructive criticism is that you let go of the mechanical timing and bring out the beauty of this song with the feeling it deserves via more tempo and dynamics variation as well as more expressiveness in the lead voice. Yes it's harder than keeping a metronome in your head but that's the difference IMHO between a good and great a cappella group. I recently heard this sung with such delicacy and feeling I can't help feeling disappointed with all these other versions.

Leslie V I agree with Leslie. You have a great group with great timing, pitch, blend, etc but it feels a bit rushed. I performed this last semester and when I listened to this it made me feel anxious. A big part of what make this song feel so good (to listen to and sing) are some of the chords on the longer notes, and when it is this fast the listener doesn't have enough time to really feel the effect and connect with the music as much. I also agree with what she said about the dynamics. You have some really nice dynamics within each line, but as a whole it is pretty much at the same volume for most of the song. It helps a lot with the immersion in the song if there is contrast. For instance the middle part around 1:50 the ha de yahs are a sort of climactic part so right before that on the lullaby we did a decrescendo through that line and then the men's line would be perfect at the volume you have it but then make the women's line come in forte. I hope that makes sense. I just mean if you make certain parts quieter (but with intensity) and then bring out other lines it makes the whole thing much more interesting. For our group we sat down together with our music and went through looking at each line and discussing whose line was most important at that part (can be no one but usually there is some moving line that can be brought out slightly to great effect). It is important to do this together so everyone is on the same page. While you do that you can also decide where you feel the climaxes are (this is a stylistic choice, listen to several different versions and use parts that you like from each or use theirs to decide what you don't want/like and create your own unique interpretation). Above all, try to connect more with the music, when a singer really connects it is a completely different experience for the listener. You can't expect someone to enjoy it if you aren't. Sometimes slowing it down is the only way to do this. I would recommend slowing it down for a while more than you want to for the final recording just to practice dynamics and feeling every note, and then when you feel more comfortable with everything then speed it back up a bit. I really do think this tempo is too fast though (this is just my opinion, obviously if you like it stick to it, but you might want to just try slowing it down in practice and see what happens, you can always go back). I hope something in this helped, feel free to use whatever advice helps and discard the rest. Anyways, sorry for the rant. All that being said, this was a great recording, props on doing it at that tempo so cleanly. Please don't be offended by anything I said, it is intended as constructive criticism. You guys are awesome and clearly have a lot of potential so keep it up!!! -Phoebe

Phoebe Zajac p.s. I am wondering if our versions of the sheet music are slightly different, in ours on the ha de yah part the alto line is ha de ya da da n da deh yah (that's not the exact spelling, I can't seem to find my music). I could be wrong but it sounds like you are all saying ha de ya ha de ya ha de ya? Are there different versions of it? I was just listening to a few different recordings and there seem to be slight variations but I can't tell if they are just changes people made on their own or if they are official versions. @Leslie V do you know? Thanks!
@eggy60

+Leslie V I think it would be difficult because they seem to be not singing at the same time. The recordings were made separately I think..

Heavy on the pitch correction, and overall a bit too artificial sounding. But, apart from that, this could be better than the original!

I Agree, I'd rather a slightly rawer sounding take than an overly corrected one. Still very well done despite.

The original? The original is a score, which is completely open to interpretation. I don't particularly like this version, but still.

What do you mean? The song was originally released by the group Rajaton from Finland.
