Really good results in my book. Outstanding old school bullet design. Still holding it's own. A viable elk load for 7mm Mag. I still have a box that is over 20 years old myself for 7mm I don't even own any more. Going to fix that this fall/winter. Looking at Ruger Hawkeye Hunter or Savage High Country.

Bob Hagel wriote about ballistics and sectional density and such. In tests he stated that the two cartridges that exhibited the deepest penetration was the 7mm magnum with 175 grain Nosler Partition bullets. The 338 Winchester magnum with a 250 grain Nosler Partition bullet. Over three feet through muscle and none.

With a sectional density of a 180 grain in 30 caliber, the 7mm Remington Magnum 160 grain in 284 caliber has the same sectional density. If both are Nosler Partition the results should be comparable in penetration. But less recoil than a 30 caliber magnum.

Partition always retains 60-75% and gets 24" penetration, which is plenty for any critter. It was the first true premium bullet and remains the bullet by which all others are judged. It's front section is soft and rear is a guarantee it's the perfect bullet and always has been. @AlaskanBallistics
@AlaskanBallistics 3 года назад
One is not better for hunting than the other. I went in to buy a .300 win mag and all they had was a 7mm Rem Mag left. The 7mm Rem Mag has less recoil and higher ballistic coefficients for longer range. But the .300 win mag has a slightly larger range of bullet weights and more bullets geared towards heavy game like bear, elk, bison but that doesn't mean you won't be able to hunt those things with a 7mm Rem Mag either. I think the weight retention is exactly as it should be for a partition bullet. I really want this cartridge along with a 338 win mag for Alaska I went undecided between a 7mag or a 6.5 prc but the 7mag gives me more horsepower heavier bullets more availability in ammo at the moment. @johnnorman7708
@johnnorman7708 4 года назад
In addendum to my previous comments, I neglected to mention Ken Waters wrote years ago that he considered bullets of around 160 grains to be the perfect balance point of this cartridge. Judging from the numbers with the powders he tested I don't think you could argue with this assessment really. Given the new powders and bullets these days, performance potential has actually leapt ahead significantly for whatever bullet weight we might ultimately choose, but I believe Waters was still on track for the balance point being around 160 grains. One thing is for certain, in 2020 this is no longer your Father's 1960s 7mm Remington Magnum. A lot of improved technology has come down the line since then and we don't have to accept factory ammo claims or low tech bullets as the last word on performance. The chronograph lie detector changed the industry....for the better.

The results are not surprising. The partition bullets are designed to shed 40% or so of their weights shortly after impact with the remaining 60% penetrating at a much greater distance. This will cause extensive tissue damage throughout an animal which makes it an excellent round for large game such as elk.
@johnnorman7708
@johnnorman7708 4 года назад
As for bullet preferences between really light and really heavy in cartridges of this intensity level, I tend to not like stuff that over expands and dynamites deer size critters and I would prefer higher penentration on those concrete block high density type of heavier than deer animals. That's kind of why I gravitate to mid weight bullets in nearly any cartridge. Some of those newer design bullets kinda rewrote the old rules of thumb though. A guy can get about any terminal performance he wants these days from some projectile available. And those newer homogeneous types can deliver the goods on extreme ends of the game type spectrum for sure.

I have really been looking at 7mm Rem Mag comments and opinions this week. Stumbled across a history of it. All the way from its wildcat prototype pre production days as a 280-338. All they were trying to get was energy sufficient to be a 500 yard elk rifle shooting 160 grain bullets with recoil much less than .30 cal magnums. That wildcat got some Remington people intrigued and they eventually ran with it. Obviously a very wise choice, given its marketing success. And it's been out there as the 7mm Rem Mag now for 58 years. Now I'm wondering about a custom M700 with a 26" Douglas barrel in a Boyd laminate. Two 160 grain loads of 2800 fps and 3100 fps respectively should cover 100 yard deer and 400 yard elk. Whether that's really an issue or not is up to the hunter. Almost blasphemy toward my old .270 though. But a guy has to ponder such questions. Wonder what Jack O'Connor really thought about the 7mm Rem. Mag. If he ever said, I never read it. Seriously I'm betting he would have gravitated to it had he not been winding up a career by the time it became a big thing. He did like the 7mm Mauser. But then there is always something out there that captures the imagination. Lately that's been 6.5 aka .264 bore. And that Creedmore so duplicates .270 Win. It's kinda weird. Who knows what's next?

I assume moose are not materially tougher than caribou, so a 7 mag would work fine for both, plus black bear. Is the 9.3x62mm very widely used in AK? I have long been interested in it. I suspect it would do well for almost everything in AK. It is basically a European 35 Whelen (something else in which i have long been interested). As always the partition performed as advertised. The front portion expanded rapidly going through the pork ribs which is important if you target is lightly constructed like a deer and then the second half acts as a FMJ for deep penetration for your moose or Grizzly. Other bullets maybe equal but I know of none better.

I'm beginning to believe my only real beef with the 7mm Rem Mag has always been the fact that it was one of the most over hyped cartridges of the last 50 plus years. Didn't seem quite right that it literally got promoted way beyond its reality. It's just a high performance .270 Winchester, and that isn't necessarily a bad thing as one writer put it. He really summed it up perfectly. I also think that people tend to misapply the bullet selection with this cartridge as bad or worse than many other cartridges. The 160 grain Nosler Partition Federal Premium tested in this video report may be as close to being a one size does it all load for this cartridge as could be bought or loaded. I've softened my position toward the 7mm Rem. Mag. quite a bit. Don't own one, but now I can't say that I'm not totally against the idea. Trouble is, I haven't a clue how it would replace anything I currently use.
@AlaskanBallistics

@@joshlower1 Potentially, yes. But you would be hard pressed to actually see the difference in the field and it would have to be on game heavier and tougher than deer sized game animals. @AlaskanBallistics 3 года назад
There's not a handloading manual out there that has 7mm rem mag coming out at 3400 fps with a 162gr bullet. You must be jacking up several grains over maximum. .300 win mag doesn't get 3400 by the book with a 165gr bullet

the weight retention he said wasn't too great is misleading. Please read Noslers description of how a partition is supposed to perform, it is supposed to shed some weight upon entry and retain 60% of it's mass.

This bullet was designed after John nosler was on a moose hunt in Canada . His cup and core bullets were blowing apart so he came up With a way to keep the bullets together . The best part of the partition is it’s consistency . It does what it is supposed to Do at all ranges . The front section opens fast and creates a devastating wound channel while the back end keeps driving through . It kills fast and efficiently . I’ve switched to the accubonds as they are more accurate but I still love the old partition

@thomasbrooks8112
@thomasbrooks8112 4 года назад
Nosler claims 65% or more weight retention in their Partition bullets so 70% is exactly what it's supposed to do. That front half just mushrooms out and smears off leaving the back 2/3 to continue driving through the animal. Of the 5 or 6 I've recovered over the years from both my .243 and 7mm08 all have been exactly what Nosler claims, 65 to 75 percent weight retention and I've never lost an animal hit with one. Most have been complete pass through. They're not always the easiest to work up accurate loads with, but definitely worth the effort.

Most ranges and clubs are full and it's like someone has to die for a spot to come open. I live in NC and unless you own the land and a lot of it or know someone who does it is hard and unsafe to shoot long distances. Never can be sure if some hiker or mountain biker is going to go off the beaten path and cross your line of fire or get behind your target.
