Heh... I'm almost 60, and all my life I've been hearing people say "today's music sucks"... regardless of when "today" was. I think it's just that people get attached to a certain musical style, and they don't like it when things change.
@mr.worldwide4758

I guess that's what's going to be constant in the everchanging music industry, people are always gonna say that "the music of today sucks". Things get better and things get worse, and that applies to everything in history, you can't say it just all gets worse because what "sucks" depends on your taste.

It's a known fact that modern compositions lack the sophistication and the craftsmanship that defined music in the 60's and the 70's. Music has been getting progressively lazier and more conventional since the early 80's.

As a 53 year old, I enjoy listening to Clairo, Phoebe Bridgers, Lorde, Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Jorja Smith, Arlo Parks, Orion Sun, San Cisco, Rufus Du Sol, Rich Brian, Anderson Paak. Chvrches, Spacey Jane, Lime Cordiale, Wolf Alice, Tame Impala, The Wombats, Arctic Monkeys, Hatchie, I know leopard, Lana Del Rey, The Weeknd,The Jungle Giants, Hockey Dad among others. I would say The Strokes and Daft Punk as well but both of these have been around for 20 years or more so they don't really count. There is a multitude of stuff to keep me happy. Mind you alot of these bands or artists have probably been influenced by alot of artists in the past and synthesised the music of the past to make it their own. eg. Clairo and Phoebe Bridgers is vey much early 70's based. Wolf Alice's latest release is very 70's and 90's sounding and yet it sounds fresh. Rufus Du Sol's latest release reminds me of New Order or Depesche mode or the rave music we listened to in the late 90's and yet completely fresh and new. It is all a testament to the musicianship and craftmanship of the artist.

What does it even matter if the crap is 90% or only 65% if takes the lion's share anyway? The remaining %, the good music, is not going to come to the audience from mainstream sources. I hate it when people complain about modern music without making any effort to find good modern music to their taste. What’s on the radio is only a tiny slice of what’s available. And, surprise, the pop charts aren’t tailored to the tastes of 30/40/50 year olds. They are for the youth, everything is new and amazing when you’re young, the youth are not as discerning as the older generation which is perfectly understandable.

What I love about Sour is that it has actual songs on it that would sound great irrespective of the production, and on top of that, Olivia isn't trying to be the 'next' anyone. She comes across as the unabashed, music obsessed 18 year old she probably is in real life. Also, it's surprisingly diverse. EDIT: Guys it's okay if you disagree with me, it's just an opinion. Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia Still on the Billboard charts 57 weeks later. Every song on that record could stand alone as a single (and most are). The production is great, her vocals are great, her lyrical content is diverse enough that not every song is about the same thing. There are different vibes and keys for every song. There’s enough 80s and 2000s sounding nostalgia to keep the album from sounding like it was written in a specific point in time. And after listening to it dozens of times it still sounds fresh.

In my opinion, SOPHIE's Oils Of Every Pearls Un-Insides is the greatest pop manifesto of this century. When I think of instant classics, a lot of albums come to mind, but one thing I've noticed is that most of them sound heavily inspired by the old days. And that's why the timeless SOPHIE stands out as a hero to me, because when I think of the soundtrack of my generation, when I think of something uniquely from my time... I think of her, I think of her legacy. Her album, and "Product" as well, changed the future of the industry forever.

the "good songs stick around and crap is forgotten"-thing is so obvious to me, because I am literally experiencing it with 2000s music right now, as the pool of songs from that area that are still being played on the radio or that become tik tok trends gets more and more concentrated. Problem with modern mainstream music is the overproduction especially with the overuse of autotune, the same trap beats, the same Omnisphere bells and patches, and the overemulation of real instruments. Heck, even metal is plagued with autotune and drum-triggers these days. Music theory-wise and melodic-wise, we have fresh ideas. It's the way how these songs are created now, that we are slowly stripping away the "human element" of songs. Everything is too perfect.

I always find the idea of disliking a song, an artist or modern music in general and the need to tell people about it extremely stupid. Music preference is entirely subjective, some songs may sound bad to you but good to others, there’s nothing wrong with that and you should respect people’s taste, calling them crap is just straight up disrespectful and doesn’t make you cool at all in case you think it is. Now when it comes to older music, I like many of them and I like plenty of modern songs too, it just always occurs to me that older songs or classical music in particular are harder to come across so it’s quite obvious why some people have never heard of or liked them, simple as that.

I think one of the main obstacles to new music becoming "classic" is that we no longer have the same shared experiences. 70's FM radio accelerated stations focusing more on narrower genres and now it's sub-sub-genres and sources scattered all over the internet. Everyone saw Elvis and the Beatles live all at the same time and it had huge impact and energy. The public just doesn't have that same common ground now.

Hey man, first of all, thanks for the awesome recommendations, and kudos for addressing the stupid cliché according to which if it's old it's good and if it's modern, it's crap. But... What is crap music anyway? Does crap music even exist altogether? Are there universal standards and metrics that constitute what is good music and bad music? The "test of time" argument, even though it has some merit, is a bit of an appeal to popularity. An album that has stood the test of time is an album which popularity hasn't faded over the decades, but aren't there some hidden gems? And most importantly, how can we state an album is uninteresting, or worse, uninspired? We might find it uninteresting, but how do we know it was uninspired? We don't know if the artist(s) who worked on said album didn't pour their heart and soul into their work, and who are we to assume otherwise? As a matter of fact, they probably did. Anyway, even though I have a few criticisms, I'm actually very glad to watch a video from an educated musician who sheds a bright light on modern pop music.

I have always ignored the “modern music is crap” sentiments because I tend to deep-dive into Spotify on a weekly basis and there are so many beautiful songs out there that so many people will never hear. It’s almost sad to know that the best song you’ve ever heard may pass you by without you even having the chance to listen to it! Even the “big” artists have songs that aren’t singles that some will never hear. Liability by Lorde is my favourite song of all time and it certainly wasn’t a popular one from her Melodrama album 👌🏼 People form stronger connections to “smaller” songs though because there’s a sense that more thought has been put into a song that isn’t designed to be chart topping. I think that fits for a lot of classics too that weren’t written to top charts, they just happened to resonate with a wider audience than expected. Bohemian Rhapsody is an obvious example

And yes, there'll be a minority of crap, and that'll get forgotten. And there's no point comparing music from different eras, it's apples vs oranges. Also, I recommend the last 3 King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard albums: KG, LW and Butterfly 3000. Then again, all their albums are brilliant and their first album, 12 Bar Bruise, was released back in 2012. Since then, they've explored almost every genre there is.

would 100% recommend Moral Panic (2020) by Nothing But Thieves and their older albums called Broken Machine (2017) and Nothing But Thieves (2015). They're a british band that combines rock with a bit of techno and classical instruments from time to time (alternative). Just went to see them and out of all the gigs I've been to, I had the best experience ever :))

The issue I have with todays music is not the artist or the song but the way it is recorded. The EQ is flat, every instrument and vocals are maxed out. I find it an assault on the ears.

Although I do agree with the premise of this video, I feel like you have tried to highlight songs which are more sound on music theory, or 'unique', or complex, or NOT simple. It is a probable factor, that might breed a 'classic', but if you look back at some of the old hits which are relevant even today, you would notice that musical complexity is only one of the the deciders of 'classic' status. I mean wonderful tonight is one of Clapton's least complex songs, and I hear it being played everywhere even today. Its classic! I agree that modern music isn't all crap, but a song necessarily doesn't have be completely and exclusively 'unique' or complex, just for it to be accepted by people as something that they want to preserve.

underscores's album "fishmonger" released just this year and I've been obsessed ever since, it has some really deep meaningful lore to it too once you start looking into the origins of the album cover (its of a smiley faced water tower that has been renamed on google maps after the album) and the symbol of the golden bangus fish on the track "the fish song" which will surely make you cry over a fish. theres also the wonderful dj mixes that have been released by them on youtube and soundcloud celebrating the songs that influenced certain tracks on the album and offers some humor + insight into more lore. great stuff, anyone reading this should def look into it as its been deeply touching for me to have an album that I resonate with so much. i will say, ive never cried so many tears while listening to a song than i have for the track "del mar county fair." incredibly memorable song about coming of age.

I think you are being way too fair on the industry... Whilst I'm in total agreement that there is plenty of amazing music out there today, the problem is that most of it isn't given a chance, especially in the digital age where a lot of money needs to be spent on marketing to be heard/seen. If by chance something good becomes mainstream such as Olivia Rodrigo - it's because it was the product of a major corporation - in this case Disney. There are plenty of talents like Olivia Rodrigo out there, but it's highly unlikely you'll ever hear them. The pop world especially prefers safe and bland to make money with artists they can easily control, not the wild rock stars of old. Unfortunately aside from her, the rest of your list is still not mainstream, even though most people who follow music will know the artists.
@PitchWheel

@Anne Day this is completely wrong. Experimental music in the seventies was mainstream and many artists had the chance to experiment and grow without getting blocked by a label

That's the point I think Rick Beato was trying to make, especially in his video about the "Y2K Curse" of rock bands popular in the 1990s not retaining their status in the decades that have since followed. It's a valid one. Labels aren't willing to develop artists anymore for the most part nor risk supporting artists with controversial views, so it's on artists themselves to get their music out if they're not already mainstream.
@RobertoVernina

Exactly: the problem with today's music industry is that the crap music is, most likely, the one that takes all the money and it gets "pumped" everywhere. It becomes the best-selling, the chart-topping and the heard-everywhere, and it's less likely to fade away. Whereas the good music is, most of the times, hardly get noticed and, I'm afraid, very few people it's going to be remembering it in the future. On the other hand, the "classic" pop music from other eras had also a lot of success back in those days; and we don't need to go too far: lots of great stuff in the nineties or the noughties was as chart-topper and ubiquitous as it's the "crap" music today.

Voicenotes by charlie puth , i havent heard such a cohesive and vinyl, airy retro, r and b, new edition feeling album ever, it has such great cohesion between all songs that i havent seen in last 15 to 17 years. include after hours by weeknd too i havent heard SUCH a retro album in ages, such good use of good sounds, gated drums, juno and prophet synth sounds etc... its SO exciting ,cohesive, story bounded (i havent seen any album which has an appealing enogh story, this was the 1st album) and its adventorous, i could listen to that album for AGES, i listen to the audio tracks more than the singles on that. I dont like future nostalgia as its a bit electronic techno stuff mixed with disco(i like disco A LOT) but electronic sonic influence of that album RUINED IT FOR ME sounds like cheap copy version of 80's.
