His groove and control is exceptional. His groove has strong characterization in the best sense of the word. It’s as though each strike of hand or foot is so intentional.

Great Job! "When the Levee Breaks" was recorded in a stairwell with mics placed as high as 3 floors up. Bonham was absolutely the king but they rarely played it live not being able to reproduce that sound. Hendrix's "All along the Watchtower" fell to the same fate, because he had access to to a new 16 track in N.Y. and worked months playing most of what you hear. But 2 of the best songs ever.

Bonham’s drums were recorded in a stairwell at Headley Grange. The openness of the drums is from overhead mics places way above his kit. The “slap back” you mention is from a Binson Echorec echo device applied during the mix. Great song and even better drum intro.

The first one of these I have seen. Very good. There is a lot of trying to learn things that happen as a byproduct of what is going on here as well. I can't emphasize enough the lesson from 3.00-3.30. That is all about presence and looking like why you are there. It's drumming 101 but because it is expected, it is never really touched on. Anyone starting out should adopt that and not let any doubt, or the look of it, creep in. Move, and look like you are feeling it. If you could look up and see anyone watching, they will be doing the same. And 95% of them won't know the mess ups us drummers hear and fret over. Dude.
@TigerKoehn
@TigerKoehn 5 лет назад
Great basic lesson. So new drummers don't get the wrong info. To the commentator. The Hi-Hat technique is NOT the Moeller method. Its simply called Accented 8ths or 16th depending. The Moeller Method is how you use your wrist to get a sound, as is Gladstone, and several other methods. What he'playing is a pattern, not a wrist technique. Andy Johns, the engineer, had Bonham set up his Ludwig in a stairwell at Headley Grange, a poorhouse in Hampshire, England, which had been converted into a recording and rehearsal space. Johns then ran to the top, grabbed some cables, and set up two Beyerdynamic M160's in a stereo pair on the second-floor landing. The only signal processing done on the drums was compression and an added echo. He compressed the reverb a bit also, but ever so slightly. The rest was the 100% natural acoustics of the stairwell. Zero-acoustic treatment was used on the drums There you have it. The actual real story

@kstailey56
@kstailey56 5 лет назад
Always been a single pedal guy myself too. It's like anything else - Practice, Practice, Practice, and a huge dose of Led Zeppelin's John Bonham (among others). Then some day you'll be ready to tackle Achilles Last Stand and / or the Live Version of No Quarter where the Triplets are plentiful and oh so subtle, but intense. Just as hand playing is all in the wrist and the 'Uttering" of the fingers, Bass Pedal is all in the Ankles and the roll of the ball of your foot.

when the levy breaks DEFINITELY has a delay on it. The openness of the drums sound is natural but the delay effect is from a delay unit.

EDIT: After subbing, I watched 3 other videos. I was disappointed, the videos were unfocused and the people were awkward. It's too bad. He's such a bro! Lol. But, check out them biceps... And the guy on the drums is NOT a bro. Interesting combo. But, the lesson itself is FANTASTIC! Good to learn right foot independence. The best drummers can groove with or without a second bass pedal. I am going to subscribe.

That's an interesting thing I didn't know about that Taylor swift/ zeplin beat. My band uses a variation of that beat in one of our songs it has a few extra bass drum notes on the 4th measure and 8th measure on the uh of those measures. Then going to a polyrythem during the chorus.

Wayne Giggins : Maybe it’s to turn off his, or both headset mic’s. That would be the way to hear only the drum mic’s. Or, conversely, maybe it turns the drum mic’s on and off. Or both ... going from headset mic’s to drum mic’s. That last possibility would be the best.
